If you are looking for a natural way to soothe a raspy voice or persistent throat irritation, you might consider an unusual but effective remedy: black bean soup. On Earth Clinic, contributors have shared that this specific preparation is a traditional secret used by Japanese singers to support vocal performance and speed up recovery from laryngitis.

Why This Remedy Works

  • Black Soybeans: Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may reduce vocal cord swelling.
  • Ginger: A powerful natural anti-inflammatory to soothe throat tissue.
  • Miso: Provides beneficial probiotics and a gentle, savory warmth that stays in the throat.

Recipe: Black Bean Miso Soup

This savory, mineral-rich soup is designed to be gentle on the digestive system while providing maximum relief for the throat.

What You Need

  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 15 ounces Organic Black Soybeans (1 can, drained; reserve the liquid)
  • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger root, minced
  • 1/2 cup carrots, trimmed and sliced into rounds
  • 2 tsp Wakame flakes
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Miso (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Boil and Simmer: Bring the water to a boil. Add the minced ginger and sliced carrots. Return to a boil, then cover and simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. Add Texture: Add the wakame flakes and the black soybeans. Cook uncovered at a gentle boil for 1 additional minute.
  3. Prep the Miso: Meanwhile, ladle about 1/8 cup of the hot soup liquid into a separate cup or bowl. Stir in the miso until it is completely dissolved.
  4. Final Simmer: Just before serving, turn the heat to low. Add the dissolved miso to the pot. Stir and simmer without boiling for 2 to 3 minutes. (Boiling miso can destroy its beneficial enzymes).
  5. Season: Taste and add more miso if desired.

Traditional Use for Singers

In Japanese culture, the "tea" or broth made from black beans is often consumed specifically for its cooling and throat-clearing properties. Singers often drink this warm broth before a performance to ensure the vocal folds are hydrated and free of excess mucus. When combined with miso and ginger, it becomes a powerful recovery meal for anyone struggling with a lost voice.

Re getting your voice back -- After hearing that Japanese opera singers eat black bean soup before performing I tried it for severe laryngitis. I'm a soprano and was singing bass. After trying the black bean soup I was up to alto in one day and back to soprano in two.
