Be careful. My Mom didn't want her doctor to know she had gained weight so took Epsom salts regularly before her appointments. This made her blood pressure go down temporarily and she appeared pink and healthy. But she died of a heart attack due to high blood pressure that no one knew she had.

Some people for over a decade have used Citro-Mag instead of Epsom salts, since it tastes better. It's in some sites' instructions. 1 10-oz bottle will easily do for an adult. It is magnesium citrate.

It is in fact used medically as a purgative before colonoscopies, etc.

Moi...Thanks for your comment but I think, perhaps that you are mistaken. Here is the very last paragraph of Janice's post again:

"I am concerned because I truly LOVE the taste, but I've also been unable to digest food almost from eating way too much and drinking (which I never do) on New Years Day.....and I don't have aches and pains myself but I have a lot of waste I am trying to get rid of, and I went to the bathroom every day at least once until drinking the Epsom Salts.....WHY?"

She is implying that the Epsom salts is causing the constipation which is very unlikely. Also in Janice's post she says that she takes "a few flakes of Epsom Salts in your tea or room temperature water". How much is a few flakes?

As Ted says, Epsom salts can be used in two ways. You can take 1/8 to 1/4 of a teaspoon of Epsom salts in a glass of water frequently to replace electrolytic balance or you can take 1 to 2 teaspoons in half a glass of water, at a much higher concentration, to act as a laxative.

I suspect that Janice was not taking enough Epsom Salts to act as a laxative, which is why I tried to help her by giving the proper laxative amounts.

Bill,

If you read her post again, she does not state that she wanted the Epsom salts to be a laxative, she was enjoying a few flakes of it in water, but it was causing constipation. She was taking it for aches and pains and whilst that seemed to be working it was also causing constipation which she found confusing.

Hi Janice...On my pack of Epsom Salts which is pure and organic, the laxative dosage is:

"For Adults, 12 yrs and older: 1 to 2 teaspoons in 1/2 glass of water.

For children under 12 yrs: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon in 1/2 glass of water."

Hope this helps.

Hi Janice...I take Epsom Salts also, but I take it as a supplement to support the magnesium requirements in my body and not as a laxative. I take about 1/4 teaspoon Epsom Salts occasionally in a glass of water. This amount in solution will NOT act as a laxative. You would have to increase your dosage from a couple of flakes to considerably more in solution to act as a laxative. Unfortunately I can't tell you the exact dose for Epsom Salt to be used as a laxative, since I use it in a different way.

Why not just buy some Milk of Magnesia (without aluminum) and use that as a laxative?

this is weird because at higher doses epsom salt actually relieves constipation!

i would suggest that you take a higher dose - look on the back of the package - it has directions - and that should help a lot.

also make sure you are drinking water also. it could be that the small amount of the epsom salts have a dehydrating effect.

Epsom Salts and Constipation

I read on Earthclinic about adding a few flakes of Epsom Salts in your tea or room temperture water to relieve aches and pains.....and sent to a friend who's mother and her are in a great deal of pain.....

However as much as I loved the taste of a few flakes of Epsom Salts in room temperature water and drank a few times a day.....I loved the taste and the warmth or sensation it gave me (like a inside body bath)...but I found it quite odd that I didn't go to the bathroom that day, and I believe it may have hindered the working department down there or something. Does it ever do that?

I am concerned because I truly LOVE the taste, but I've also been unable to digest food almost from eating way too much and drinking (which I never do) on New Years Day.....and I don't have aches and pains myself but I have a lot of waste I am trying to get rid of, and I went to the bathroom every day at least once until drinking the Epsom Salts.....WHY??

It stings for a bit, but within a short period of time the pain is down, a few hours I know its already on the mend, and the next day its usually about 1/2 to 2/3 cleared up. It only needs to be done once.

There is a grocery store in town that sells ground beef containing that mystery "flavor"... That's just creepy. Why are they suddenly adding "flavor" to the ground beef? Ground beef is ground beef. When you buy ground beef that's what you expect to get. JUST GROUND BEEF. You buy it because you want to flavor it YOURSELF. Who asked them, "This ground beef isn't flavory enough, would you mind flavoring it for me?" Who expects to find that in their meat??!!!! Is the meat so terrible that they actually had to add more cow flavor? Are we some day going to be buying lamb flavored pork chops?

My son just arrived last week from San Diego with my 3 yrs old grandson who is in a terrible state with eczema. They are spending a fortune on Dr. and Ointments. I took my little grandson and put him into Epsom Salts baths for the past four days and the bleeding has stopped he is not scratching and it is drying out. I remembered that people came from all over the world to Israel for the salts baths at the dead sea so I applied what I learned from living in Israel and it is working. At first it hurt him but after a minute he was fine with the salt water. Try it. Esther Golden Pavek.

Epsom Salts Worked for Sciatica!

My mother came down with sciatica last week. Immediately she went to see my brother, who is a chiropractor. That helped her a lot but the pain and discomfort was still there for her. Since then she was resting her leg as often as she could and taking pain killers when needing to walk on it for any extended period of time. When I heard about it, I had a look on this site and noticed the epsom salts testimonials. I suggested that she try having an epsom salt bath and to drink a couple of teaspoons of it with a glass of water also.

Well, I called her this morning and my mother was so excited! She said that she had a bath for about 30 minutes (and read a magazine!) with 2 cups of epsom salts on Wednesday night before going to bed. She also drank a glass of water with 2 teaspoons of epsom salts with some honey to improve the taste. She said that she slept so peacefully that night and woke up in the morning with NO PAIN! She was over the moon!

On Thursday, she drank a couple more glasses of water, epsom salts and honey and she plans to have another bath tonight (Friday). There has been no sciatica pain since waking up Thursday morning.

Thank you to Jean and Gwen for posting your results, the good news has now spread to our family too and we are passing it on to others. God Bless.

I have found over the years that I will experience severe sciatica when I am severely constipated. When this happens I pull out the "big guns", Epsom salts. 2-4 teaspoons dissolved in water. Small amount of water followed by as much water as possible after wards. I'll use a straw to drink solution. Put straw to back of tongue beyond taste buds & suck. Taste terrible, but when I am in that much pain I'll do anything to relieve it! You can also add lemon or lime juice to lessen the taste. Pain starts to diminish after first trip to the pot. Works every time & I'm over it in less than 24 hour. Good luck & God/Goddess Bless!

I find that trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup is challenging, but avoiding MSG is almost impossible, because it can be hidden. Perhaps Earthclinic could start a page that lists products that are MSG free?

EC: We do already have a page for MSG. It may be easier to list the ingredients that contain msg rather than finding the ones that don't!

Seizure Control

To Dianna & Viola,

Epsom salts' chemical name is magnesium sulfate and yes your doctor should know that because that is what they give pre-eclamptic and eclamptic mothers IV to keep them from seizing or stroking out with high blood pressure. But don't be too harsh on your poor doctor because the AMA is the strongest union in the country and they don't like any doctor recommending anything they don't have control over. They dislike it so much they will try to put him out of business or even revoke his license to practice medicine. The newer anti-siezure medications are basically magnesium in one form or another. I suspect this is mostly because magnesium competes with monosodium glutamate for sites in the brain and monosodium glutamate is known for causing seizures, among many other problems.

This is why I urge everyone to wise up and stop thinking you only get MSG when you eat Asian or stir-fried foods. To really get a good idea of how much MSG & aspartame you are poisoning yourself & your family with, google "excitotoxins" & write down the names they hide MSG under and go into your kitchen. That tomato ketchup that your kids love so much - have fun trying to find one that isn't loaded with MSG. Those tasty pizzas we all like so well - again have fun trying to find one without the sauce being loaded with it. If You tube hasn't taken it off already, they had an excellent l hour interview with Dr. Russell Blaylock who wrote the book
"Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills".

Don't forget to check the raw meats ingredients list also and don't be surprised when you find one of the bogus names for MSG on the labels.

i have had gran mal seizures since i was in my teens. the doctors could never find anything wrong and i took dilantin for years. somehow along the way i also found that if i took cal-mag (calcium magnesium liquid) it helped. well it took me years to realize that soaking in epsom salts help too. recently i have started having seizures again and realized that i had not been taking my epsom salt baths for a while. i even rub the salts on my body to exfoliate... so i started taking a little bit orally mixed with VCO too - just to get it back in my system. it really makes me mad that doctors do not tell people about this. they have to know that epsom salts have magnesium in them... a doctor had told me about cal-mag in the first place... but no one ever mentioned epsom salts. i guess they are too cheap!

btw - soaking in epsom salt baths also helps bi-polar people feel better.

My journey into nutrition started in the 70's with Adelle Davis' books. She recommended magnesium (epsom salts) for Epilepsy. I have told this to various people over the years and offered them the books to read, amazingly they didn't want to do the research, preferring the allopathic methods of treatment. Ms Davis was also a strong proponent of folic acid to prevent spina biffida! This has only recently been taken seriously..but her evidence could have saved much untold misery for unfortunate families during these intervening years.

In one of her books Ms Davis referred to another nutritionist from the 40's who opined that unless magnesium levels in the diet were improved, within a generation we would't be able to tell from the backview the difference between boys and girls!!! Well girls used to have waists (18" to 22") and boys always had physiques, maybe lack of magnesium affects the hormones somehow.

Prepare a bath as directed on the epsom salt container. Do not use ANY soap, bubble bath, etc in this bath. Soak in it for a couple minutes. Then, using a washcloth, scrub the skin for a minute or so. Soak the area in the bath for 20 minutes. Towel dry. Do this daily or every other day.

I found this out accidentally and I was pleasantly surprised to see it had an effect on my rear-end acne. I've been trying to get rid of it for 2 months! Soap and exfoliators seemed to make matters so much worse. After the first two soaks, the skin appeared softer and no longer red and inflamed. The cyst like formations were going away! I've been doing this for a week now and my skin looks and feels so much nicer now. I still have a few bumps but I bet they will be gone in another week. I hope this works as well for others as it did for me!

For decades my wife has taken 5 or 6 400iu Vitamin E tablets before doing unaccustomed exercise, moving, extra gardening, etc. with no stiffness or aches after. If she forgets to take them she has all the normal problems that follow these actions. She then has to take two to three times the dosage several time to get rid of the aches. For some reason I am one of the lucky ones and rarely have any aches following an unaccustomed exercise but the vitamin E works well for her.

Aches and Pains

If you have menstrual cramps, charley horses, eye twitches or any other kind of muscle cramps or just general aches and pains, try epsom salts baths. Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) is an excellent source of magnesium, much more bio-available and less expensive than supplements. You can soak in it in the tub, or make a spray from 4oz by weight of epsom salts dissolved in 32 fluid oz of distilled water. Put the epsom salt/water mix in a spray bottle and spray it on after your shower (rub it in like lotion all over). This is a home made version of "magnesium oil" (magnesium chloride), only made with epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) instead. Magnesium from epsom salts is very well absorbed throught the skin and doesn't loosen the bowels like oral magnesium supplements do. If you want to use magnesium chloride to make homemade "magnesium oil", get some unscented magnesium chloride bath salts and proceed as for "magnesium oil" made from epsom salts. Since I started using epsom salts, my skin is no longer dry...due, I think, to the sulfer content of epsom salts. If you feel up-tight, tense, anxious, nervous, crampy, etc., take an epsom salt soak. Exercise, and stress of all kinds, depleats magnesium, which is why an epsom salt soak after a work out or a stressful day is so good for you.

Gallbladder Stones

★★★★☆

RE Dr. Hulda Clark's gallbladder/liver flush: While many would like to say that the gallstones obtained from a gallbladder flush are simply the products of the flush ingredients, that does not explain a few things I have experienced in performing the flush.

While fresh, more recently formed gallstones are the pea-green characteristic of new bile and might be supposed to be related to the olive oil used in the flush, there are several types of stones obtained in a flush. Tan, granular stones are also observed, as are dark-colored "pigmented" stones (pigmented by bilirubin) as well as yellow, fatty chaff.

Further, the olive-oil-stone theory does not in any way explain the presence of bile-duct flukes unseated by the cleanse. These were identified as Opisthorchis sinensis -- apparently my sushi-eating years left some souvenirs behind.

You can "explain away" stones all you want, but it's pretty hard to make olive oil into flukes complete with visible proboscis.

Gallbladder Stones
Posted by Dan (Largo, FL) on 09/17/2006
★☆☆☆☆

I've done about 20 liver & gallbladder flushes over the last 23 years. I agree about the confusion on "soap stones", which of course are not gall stones. I've never agreed to such claims, as there are just too many that come out even if you do liver flushes a week apart. If that's all that is expelled, there's a good chance that there are missing steps that look "optional", but actually are vital to the procedure. I say "vital" because the lack of these steps could actually prove dangerous. I learned how to do a liver flush from my brother who cave me a copy of the procedure developed by Dr.Kelley.

The big difference is he uses apple juice with Phosfood drops for several days to a week before the flush. The malic acid in the apple juice and the phosphoric acid in the Phosfood drops act to soften the stones. If the stones aren't softened, they may not pass, and you've just wasted a lot of your time and half a cup of perfectly good olive oil. etc.

Also, if the stones aren't softened, they may get stuck, and I'd guess if you check around you'll find cases where people had to get emergency medical treatment because of a flush gone bad. Another missing step that I've seen is the Epsom salts. I've seen procedures where this step was called "optional". I beg to differ. The Epsom salts is a necessary part of the procedure. The magnesium sulfate serves three purposes.

First, it causes an evacuation of your gut by relacing all of the sphincter muscles. This is important, because if your intestines are full of food, the oil won't have as big a reaction. What we're trying to accomplish here is a huge spasm of the gall bladder to as completely evacuate it as possible. That's why we take so much oil. But this does no good if the intestines are still of food, as the sensing of oil in the duodenum is what causes the gall bladder to contract. (I've also assisted the contractions with gall bladder massage, but that's another story.)

Secondly, the Epsom salts magnesium causes the bile ducts to relax and dilate. This allows any larger stones (if present) to pass without getting stuck. And once again, we don't want half measures on this, as you look kind of silly when you have to call 911.

So, these two steps are vital. You might as well not do a flush if you're going to skip these two steps. Yes, the Epsom salts tastes bitter. No, that's not a good reason not to take it. Thirdly, the magnesium helps to relax you so you can actually sleep with an otherwise uncomfortable feeling in the abdomen. So, these two steps (apple juice phosfood and Epsom salts) are not optional. They are important to the procedure and may help debug any lack of success that one may have had when omitting them.
