I've had massive dime-sized canker sores for years and had tried just about everything by the time I had finally found this website. I tried the recommended L-Lysine tablets 2 times a day (morning and evening) and have been doing so for about 6 months now. I am happy to say I have finally found the cure for canker sores, trust me, L-Lysine works! I never get canker sores anymore.

For years, my teenage grandchildren suffered through excruciatingly painful episodes of canker sores. After trying & failing with many remedies suggested by their mother & others, including their M.D., they finally tried the old-fashioned home-remedy that their great-grandmother used! L-lysine, a simple, low cost cure. They now are tried & true users of L-lysine, and have almost become heroes with their college friends. The treatment is: Immediately upon the beginning of an out-break, take two 500 mg. tablets. Continue taking one 500 mg. tablet each day until 2 or 3 days past the day the canker sore appears to be healed. "L-lysine is an essential amino acid needed in our diet. It is found in animal protein, such as milk protein. It is recommended that young adults need approximately 23 mg of L-lysine per day per kilogram (10 mg per lb) of body weight. The proteins of cereals; wheat gluten, for example, do not provide enough L-lysine (Columbia University Press Encyclopedia)". Little do the young believe that Grandmother's could be so smart - until they try the "old- fashioned home remedies!

My daughter and I would get canker scores often, until a friend told me about Lysine. We both take one a day, and if ever one starts to appear, then take 2 pills and the scores are gone. I told a great friend who had very dry lips and the lysine has worked for her as well! Love it! The pain is gone!

My 5 year old daughter came down with a horribly serious case of canker sores. Her mouth had several sores on her tongue, cheek, and gums. Her gums were so red and swollen you could barely see her little teeth. Her breath was absolutely terrible and she barely ate or drank a thing. Finally after a week of different attempts, we had her gargle with 6 drops of tea tree oil in 4 oz. of water three times a day, gave her half an adult dose of L-lysine crushed up into water once a day, gave her a homeopathic every hour and had her drink 16 oz. of water with acidophilus/FOS throughout the day. We kept her completely off of sugar, dairy and meat and mostly she ate cottage cheese and plain yogurt. Within one day she was so much better and finally eating and within 3 days totally better!

My nurse practitioner recommended L-Lysine for my debilitating canker sores. They would last for weeks and were so bad that the pain extended to my neck and lymph nodes. I couldn't even eat without excruciating pain. When I feel a canker sore coming on, I take 1 gram 3 times a day and the sore is gone within a day or two.

Lemon Juice for Mouth Ulcers:

I've recently had a bit of a fight with ulcers on the back of my throat and roof of my mouth. They are so painful and yet again the doctor can describe nothing to cure them, only a paste to numb them....which in my eyes (as a singer) is not going to do me much help!! I've tried ACV and ginger with no luck, but the last time Cayenne Pepper in Hot water seemed to do the trick but this time neither could help me and they would not budge! I decided to squeeze the juice of a fresh lemon into a cup and gargle with it...BLOW ME DOWN!!!! IT STUNG LIKE HELL and my eyes watered, however I could feel them burning on the roof of my felt like they wanted to grow legs and run out of there!!! So 24hours after the lemon juice gargle, the redness has calmed down and they are totally on the time I am going to add salt to this mixture and burn them right out!! But for now the lemon juice has worked wonders!!

For a canker sore combine equal parts Maalox (or generic equivalent) and Benadryl liquid (or generic equivalent).Shake well and swish around mouth. Do not rinse. After eating brush teeth and repeat this.

Regarding mouth & tongue ulcers, the round white ones that hurt and take some time to resolve:

I am not used to having such ulcers but a change in diet, and an unforeseen minor setback in health status, and I experienced mouth pain bad enough from one of these ulcers to cause me complete physical discomfort including headache. I tried numerous remedies that have worked for others, got minor temporary relief-- but the ulcers remained unscathed, and the pain came back intense as before. Then I held a QTip coated with magnesium citrate powder directly onto the ulcer for about 2 or 3 minutes. Ulcer went away within 24 hours.

A month later, on the other side of my mouth, another ulcer, smaller, and with the exact same result when I dipped my finger in the Mg citrate and then rubbed it on the ulcer: No pain within a day.

This may be useful for others.

I sometimes get very painful mouth ulcers. I simply put a bit of manuka honey on it and they disappear within a day or two.

Thanks for the information Corinna. If I should ever get one again (hope I never do), I will try the Manuka Honey on it. Mine wasn't so painful, just large, ugly and embarrassing! It was on the front part of my bottom lip for everyone to see. Thanks again!

Mouth Sore Solution is proven effective for treatment of mouth sore and recurrent aphthous ulcer which cures in just a few seconds. It is cheap and available in the Philippine drugstores specifically in Cebu City. I don't know if it is available in other countries. Each bottle contains 4mL solution - Potassium Alum, Sodium Chloride, and Acetic Acid. Directions: Soak a piece of cotton bud into the solution and apply to the affected area. Let it stay for 20 seconds, and then gargle with water. That's it! the pain is gone in just seconds not days or weeks. Though it stings in the process of application but it's worth it than suffering in several days or weeks

My dentist sold me a $40 teeny tiny bottle of solution and gave me a pack of little cotton applicators. He told me to be sure that the bottle is stored standing because it will eat through the plastic cap if left on its side!! Not very reassuring! Anyway, it truly does work like magic. Just as described, you put it directly on the sore for 20 or 30 seconds, rinse and the pain starts to recede immediately. A day or two and the sore is totally gone. My husband uses it with the same results.

I do also think my diet has a great deal to do with cankers, though. Too much peanut butter (more than once every three or four days) will for sure give me one. I recently also switched toothpaste and I have had only one sore since doing so. I think it was aggrevated by my teeth whitening procedure.

This does work wonders. I used it in Cebu, and have been trying to find it in other countries, but with no luck. I tried to take a bottle home to the USA with me, but it had spilled out in my bag. I guess your dentist was right about it eating through the plastic. I get a sore every time I bite my lip. This is the only thing that is a real cure. Everything else just tries to numb the pain. If the makers of this could distribute it, they would make millions.

Multiple Remedies

After testing many things for canker sores, it seems that for me what does work to an extent is: lysine, low gluten ingestion, and now I've just discovered that dabbing a bit of coconut oil (in my desperation!!) on a sore reduces the pain quite a bit for me!

Lisa, thanks for your kind words!

My daughter used to get canker sores almost every week. We tried all different remedies, but I finally found something that has worked for us so well that I don't remember the last time she got one. She takes a multivitamin for older women it says on the label for women over 50, it has alot of extra b vitamins. She also takes a probiotic that has 20 billion live cultures in it. The kind we get is shelf stable, doesent have to be refrigerated and has 10 different strains. That's it! We take these two pills every night and that has resolved her painful problem.

I hope it can help someone else out there!!

I have always had Canker sores. All of my life I have been dealing with having and getting rid of Canker sores. Finally I have found a solution, and I am very happy for it. All I have to do now is make sure I take a multi-vitamin every three days and I am totally fine. If I start to get one, I know I have missed my dose and take a vitamin and soon, it goes away. I am not sure what it is in the vitamin, I goggled vitamin and Canker on the web and found that it might be Vitamin B, B-12, Iron, Folate or Vitamin C. Either way, I have been deficient and now I will be sure that I have all my vitamins. Give thanks. And thanks Earth clinic and everyone who writes in, the posts here with ACV helped me get over my sore throats and stay healthy!
