[WARNING!] 11/27/2007: Sherry from Jacksonville, North Carolina: "re: Side Effects of MSM -- I am so greatful to God for this forum. I can totally relate to DL from CA, that posting is almost a total duplicate of what I just recently experienced. I had been having constant pain in my legs and feet for over a year and had, had my fill. I did some research and came across the MSM. I was also diagnosed with asteopenia about the same time, so I decided to try it. Two night ago I had my son take me to the ER, I was having a lot of what's been discribed here concerning the heart beating weird, anxiety(I quess) because I don't know how else to expain how I was feeling, shaollow breathing, heaviness of chest etc. All this had been going on for sometime and I normally could meditate on scriptures and it would go away, this night was different. My jaunt to the ER, showed irregular heatbeat, palputaions to be exact. However, all of my blood work came back normal, showing no previous heart attacks or heart desease. I have been refered for a stress test. I am going to discontinue my use of MSM and see what happens. I will keep you posted as to what happens after I am no longer taking this product. Oh yeah, one of the other effects is headaches. I also started getting headaches that wouldn't go away. I sorta fluffed that off figuring it was a sinus thing, however these aren't sinus area specific. So, I'm thinking this is all related. Time will tell. I am very happy for those folks that this works for. Of course, every bodies matabolism is differnt, so what works for others may not work for someone else. I am very happy for those folks that this works for. Of course, every bodies matabolism is differnt, so what works for others may not work for someone else. Anyone else that may have related info. that would be helpful to my situation please feel free to e-mail me. God Bless"

[WARNING!] 10/25/2007: Joanna from New York, New York: "I started taking 2 grams of MSM per day for about 9 days (NOW Foods brand in capsule form). As soon as I swallowed a capsule, I became excessively thirsty. I'd even wake up in the middle of the night to drink 2 full glasses of water. I perspired much more (perhaps from all the water I drank), which didn't bother me because I liked sweating more in the sauna. I got pains in my body, especially in my arms and hands - I felt like I was getting arthritis/tendonitis, which was weird because I thought MSM was supposed to help if you have that. My bowel movements increased from 1 per day to 4. At night I'd notice my heart was beating fast. I can usually walk for miles but I got really scared when I found I had trouble walking fast and breathing well on a fairly short walk. I was searching the web for allergic reactions to MSM but couldn't find any. The only other supplement I was taking at that time was 50mg of Ubiquinol (CoQ10). So I stopped taking both. The thirst and breathing/heart problems went away fairly fast, but the pains in my arms lasted a few weeks. Since the time I stopped taking it (probably 1.5 months now), I've been getting sharp pains in my upper abdomen (left and right sides), which have been slowly getting better."
Replies07/30/2011: Robyn from New Plymouth, New Zealand replies: "Re: side effects to MSM, it must be taken with a 1/3 Vitamin C, I make capsules up with Vit C powder or make sure I have at least 1000 C every time I take MSM. This may help those who get a reaction to it."
03/26/2012: Angel from Brooklyn, Newyork Newyork replies: "Let me let all of you know that some pills or capsules have added stuff to them like fills and floaters (not to say its only in pills or capsules) things like that in them so I advise everyone to try taking opti-msm flake its pure its in a crystal form and which is its original form but crushed into a powder form so you could drink it. My only side effect with it is sleepiness which now I found out from reading someone's post that you shouldn't take it after 2 pm or you will experience sleepiness but I still do cause it's not much of a problem. To test if the powder is real with no fillers or floaters all you have to do is take a glass cup (a clear one of course) and put (WARM WATER) into the cup and put 1/2 teaspoon of msm(or two 1/2 teaspoons if you want to be sure) into the cup and stir with a clean spoon after it dissolves in the glass cup of water it should be clear as if you never put anything into the glass cup (NOTE:give the water a little time to settle after you stir) if you happen to notice a fog or floaters in it (DON'T TAKE IT call and get your money back cause your not getting it from professionals that actually want you to have the real thing they only care about money jerks) I advise you to get it from another supplier that knows about msm."

[WARNING!] 10/20/2007: Tanya from New Orleans, LA: "MSM caused anxiety-- I'm glad to see i'm not the only one. I took some organic MSM and that stuff made me sooooo nervous, rapid heart beat and my nerves felt "fried". OMG this stuff grabbed a hold of me and wouldnt let go. I remembered I took this stuff and stopped. This happened twice. Now i know it was the MSM. I even took some prescription anti anxiety med and the feeling would not go away."
Replies04/26/2010: Troy from Dublin, Va, Usa replies: "Folks, you have got to understand what detox is. A detox can do all sorts of strange things, until it runs its course. The best thing may be to go slow in the beginning. I highly doubt there could be a true allergic reaction to pure MSM. Because, it is in pretty much every cell in your body, and in pretty much every living thing on the planet. It is a very important nutrient. If you are allergic to it, you would be allergic to your own body."
[SIDE EFFECTS] 09/27/2010: Lisa from Lafayette, La replies: "Troy, I am sure everyone understands what detox is. But when your 48 yr old husband whom you love more than life itself wakes up in the middle of the night with a heart jumping out of control after taking msm for 2 days, detox is the last thing on your mind!!! My hubby had already made 2 trips to the ER with rapid heartbeat a couple years ago. These symptoms decreased to almost zero with the addition of magnesium, co-q-10 and L-carnitine to his daily diet, but is now truly down to zero after adding d-3, k-2, quercetin and milk thistle. Yay!! Then last night, he had another episode thing with the heart pounding. I also had severe head pain and EXCESSIVE thirst, even though I drink tons of water. We are stopping this msm after only 2 days. He doesn't need it bad enough to experience heart problems, and try to work through a "detox". I need HIM around more than he needs msm! To encourage someone to stay on something that is causing serious side effects is simply dangerous advise in my opinion! Arthritic and joint pain can be treated with Hyaluronic Acid, which is what we are doing. Husband just wanted to add the msm to see if the results would be even greater, so that's why we added it to our mix. Not anymore, though! I'm throwing out that big bag of white powder today!"
09/04/2011: Ds from Us, Usa replies: "It's interesting that you mentioned D3, because as I was reading over all these warnings, I was thinking how they're saying now that the majority of us are deficient in Vitamin D. And it makes sense, given the fear that's been instilled in us about the sun, how we wear all this sunscreen crap, always under the cover of a house, workplace or vehicle. And all these years drinking pasteurized milk that was supposed to be covering a chunk of our Vitamin D needs, and it's not even the right type of D. And then telling us that 400 I. U. Was all we needed.
NOW they're finally admitting that we need a lot more than that. And that the lack of this vitamin is likely the cause of many of our major ills. Vitamin D, our bodies need it for so many things--calcium. Imagine all the calcium running around in our bodies with no place to go 'cause the body can't use it without proper amounts of Vitamin D3.
So I'm now wondering how many of our freaky reactions and allergies and ill-health conditions will be alleviated once we toss the sunscreen and start taking large doses of Vitamin D3. I was watching a naturopath's youtube and she was saying she routinely starts her patients out on 5000 I. U. Daily without even testing because she's seen that most people are deficient. If someone is dealing with health issues (who isn't?) supplementing with less than that is likely going to have an insignificant effect. She says with those who have very low levels (probably a big percentage of us), she starts them out on 10,000 I.U. For a few months, then lowers that amount. Sunshine, hmm, we actually need it. Go figure ;)"

[WARNING!] 05/04/2006: DL from BH, CA: "I recently bought powdered MSM for a sports knee injury. The pain in my knee literally went away overnight after the first dose on MSM. I got excited and doubled the dose for the next 5 days. At that same time, I started to have anxiety attacks when I lay down to sleep. It felt as though my lungs weren't getting enough oxygen and I started to get paranoid that I was going to stop breathing during the night! My chest felt as though it had an enormous amount of pressure on it. After a few days of this, I realized it had to be the MSM and stopped taking it. My breathing issues went away 48 hours after stopping the MSM. In the future I will take much less of this!"

[WARNING!] 04/21/2006: Steve from NM: "I started to take MSM recently and started to have anxiety late at night before sleeping. Funny -- you don't hear anything about the side effects of MSM, yet clearly I was having a reaction."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 03/10/2009: Jodie from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia: "I have used msm for 8 months for pigmentation. At first I had many symptoms of an adverse reaction such as lethargy, headaches, diarrhea and felt dizzy constantly. I also had gradually increased the dose over a couple of weeks. After a couple of months I could no longer stand it and stopped taking it. I eventually started taking it again after I stopped drinking Alcohol and coffee for a couple of months and began eating a lot of fresh veges and fruit. I also changed the brand of msm to a pure crystal form (100% crown msm). To my surprise I have had absolutely no reaction this time and am taking up to 12 mgs daily. My pigmentation is slowly breaking up and fading slightly. It has reduced my pigmentation by approximately 30% (It covered most of my face)."
Replies01/04/2010: Merryanne from Orange City, Florida, USA replies: "Hello Jodie,,I have a question about the amount of MSM you are taking?? Are you taking 12mgs or 12grams??
Merryanne in Florida, USA"
[NAY] 01/09/2011: Tina from Washington, D.c. replies: "PLEASE LISTEN TO ME!! I HAVE BEEN WALKING AROUND WITH A VERY ARTHRITIC ("sick") KNEE. I DID NOT KNOW THAT I HAD GOUT IN MY KNEE. I STARTED TAKING MSM AND ENZYMES AND MY KNEE GOT STIFFER AND HEAVIER AND STIFFER AND HEAVIER UNTIL IT LOOKED LIKE A SWOLLEN PUMPKIN. IT FELT LIKE SOMEONE STUCK A KNIFE IN MY KNEE AND I COULD NOT WALK! I AM RELATIVELY A HEALTHY PERSON. I'M IN MY FORTIES EXCEPT IF HAVE THIS KNEE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE BEEN WALKING AROUND WITH FOR YEARS BECAUSE I WAS TOO SCARED TO GO TO THE DOCTOR IN FEAR HE WAS GOING TO SAY I NEEDED A KNEE REPLACEMENT. WELL I FOUND OUT I HAVE GOUT IN MY KNEE AND I DO NOT NEED A KNEE REPLACEMENT.WHEN MY KNEE TOOK THAT TERRIBLE TURN FOR THE WORSE WHEN I WAS TAKING MSM FREQUENTLY (PLUS ENZYME PILLS), I LOOKED UP WHAT THIS MSM WAS THAT I WAS TAKING FOR MY KNEE. MSM IS SULFUR/ANTICEPTIC AND MSM WAS EXTREMELY DRYING TO MY "GOUT" ARTHRITIC KNEE. I THINK THAT MSM IS A HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE THING TO TAKE. IT DRIED MY KNEE OUT AND I THINK THE ENZYMES (ACIDIC) DIDN'T HELP MY SENSITIVE KNEE EITHER. I AM TELLING YOU THE TRUTH. MY KNEE REACTS TO STUFF THAT IT FEELS IS BAD AND NO I WAS NOT AT ALL ALLERGIC TO MSM. THIS WORD NEEDS TO GET OUT. MY OTHER HEALTHY JOINTS WEREN'T AFFECTED BUT IN TIME I THINK THAT MSM WOULD DRY OUT A PERSON'S JOINTS. I CANNOT STRESS HOW TERRIBLE THAT MSM WAS FOR ME.
IF IT WASN'T FOR THE COD LIVER OIL THAT I HAD TO TAKE FAITHFULLY THREE TIMES A DAY, I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD ANY RELIEF. IT TOOK ALMOST A MONTH JUST TO GET BACK TO WHERE MY KNEE WAS BEFORE THIS HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I STILL HAVE A BAD KNEE AND I HAVE TO GO TO THE DOCTOR AND GET TREATED FOR THE GOUT IN MY KNEE. AT LEAST I CAN SAY THAT AFTER TAKING THE MSM PRODUCT, IT FORCED ME TO SEE THE DOCTOR FOR MY KNEE PROBLEM AND NOW I CAN HAVE MY KNEE TREATED TO GET RID OF THE GOUT. MSM WAS THE WORST PRODUCTS THAT I TOOK FOR MY ARTHRITIC KNEE."

TENNIS ELBOW

[YEA] 04/28/2009: Mark from Albany, NY: "I just read about MSM for tennis elbow. My freaking elbow has been killing me for like 3 days. Cracking, snapping, just all around pain like you wouldn't believe. I don't play tennis or golf, I'm a plumber so I use my hands all day. I think it's from sitting at the computer with my elbow hanging off as I use the mouse. Anyways, I was ready to cut my freaking arm off with a sawzall until I read about this MSM and decided to give it a shot. I went to the local Health store and they had come 15% pure MSM cream. Cost like $8.00 for a small bottle. Got home, still in freaking pain and rubbed it on. Okay, so no bullshit....within like 1 minute...pain gone. I am not freaking kidding, this shit really works! So whatever is in it totally works and I'm a believer. Magic bullet...pain gone! Still a little soreness but the aching, snapping is gone! Thanks Earth Clinic and your posts people! Love this site !!! Keep posting !!!!!"

TOPICAL
04/17/2011: Sara from Sacramento, Ca: "Hello, I am just wondering is it safe to apply MSM cream on face. If someone has some experince or thoughts please share it with me here. Thanks, sara"
Replies10/15/2011: Dreamerbob from Las Vegas, Nv replies: "We use a saturated solution of MSM and distilled water and spray on our faces, hands, arms, elbows, feet etc. It has cured up various skin ailments that nothing else has been able to resolve. We also take a couple teaspoons of MSM in water each day. We have noticed good effects from it and nothing negative."

URINARY INCONTINENCE

[YEA] 05/04/2010: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand: "To Ted: Early this year I had a very bad UTI and ended up in hospital. Afterwards I had trouble with extreme urgency and thought that I would now have to rely on pads for the rest of my life. I had already been taking ACV regularly, so no obvious help there...However, a couple of weeks ago I started regularly taking MSM (500mg x 2 times daily).I was suprised on the second day after starting that I no longer had the "before and after" dripping problem. On the third day I was amazed at being able to hold on for 10 minutes instead of the usual 10 seconds. Since then I have had no real problems and no longer need to wear pads. I have an idea about why this worked for me but of course I have no proof, but perhaps the infection weakened my bladder (or kidneys) sufficiently to allow some opportunistic parasites to invade and the MSM killed them off. I would be interested in your thoughts on this. As ever Earth Clinic is a wonderful source of information and support."
Replies11/27/2011: Vandy from Auckland, Newzealand replies: "Hi there,I am facing hair loss from awhile after my long research. I feel like trying msm. I am in new zealand and if somebody could suggest me where I could get good quality MSM not china make."

WHERE TO BUY

08/03/2010: Peter from Chicago, Il: "Joyce from Joelton, Tn,
Can you let us know where (phone #) do you buy your MSM powder from? Most of the MSM in the market is from China. Thanks!"
Replies08/06/2010: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hi Peter from Chicago,Happy to share with you where I purchase my MSM. Hope they have a farmer's co-op near you because that is where I purchase mine. Just go to the co-op and head for the animal medicine section. The container will be labeled "not for human consumption". If you can't find a co-op there, I used to order mine from ProFormula Labs in Davies, Fla. If you do get at the co-op, just make sure that it is packaged well and is l00% pure MSM. Lots of luck on getting rid of that problem. Another possibility you might call AHC Products in Winchester, Ky. 859-737-3441. This is the brand I have been getting at the present co-op and I know that they put it out in 2 1/2 lb & 6 lb containers. Don't be afraid to use the large end of the scoop once or twice a day - allegedly Dr. Jacob's has had no unwanted side effects from taking the race horse dose for years and neither have I."

[QUESTION] 02/19/2009: Melody from Bangkok, Thailand: "Hi to Ted! I wanted to know where I can buy msm supplements here in Bangkok? I have problems with melasma. I heard msm is good and effective for melasma problem. thanks."
Replies02/23/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "MSM helps melasma if sufficient quantity is taken. However, MSM is not sold in Thailand. Although a common acne medication such as azelaic acid and retinoic acid may reduce some of those issues. It is said that excessive production of estrogen and progesterone brings about melasma, although I believe that vitamin E 400 i.u. also tends to normalize some of these hormone imbalances as this is one of remedies used to alleviate menopause, which is a hormonal imbalance."
05/30/2009: Digger from Tagbileran, Phillipines replies: "Hi to Ted...hi mate im Australian and i use MSM and DMSO...I buy these products in australia when i visit there.. But i also visit thailand a lot..Is there anywhere that i can BUY DMSO in Thailand..or if not, can you tell me where you buy your DMSO from. Thanks. Digger"
05/04/2010: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "MELASMA: From what I have read on this site it seems to me that melasma might be another name for pregnancy cap. This is what (in the "old" days) we called the brownish grey pigmentation that covered the faces of some pregnant women. I have seen the same thing on a niece of mine when she was going through fertility treatment and it is still in evidence some years after. What I do know is that Adelle Davis indicated this to indicate a deficiency in folic acid..perhaps this should be investigated.. Adelle also warned all those years ago about spina bifida and folic acid deficiency. Such a tragedy her information was neglected by the medical profession until now."
