Mini-Seizures
08/10/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington: "I am 39 and I have been having strange symptoms. It has happened at the store two times, usually when I am very stressed. I get up to the counter and my body goes into what I can only equate as having a mini seizure. My head starts to shake, my body starts to jerk around, and I have a hard time walking. It is to say the least humiliating. If anyone knows what can cause this I would be so grateful. I am an outgoing person and am now leary about going anywhere out of fear that this will happen again. Many thanks."
RepliesEC: To rule out a serious medical condition, it would be wise to see your physician as soon as possible.
08/11/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "Thank you.I know I need to see a doctor, but we have been severely hit by the recession and at this point, going to a doctor would mean not having food for the week.We have no insurance and you have to pay in advance just to have an office visit. I was just hoping someone in the earth clinic community has experienced this and could give me some insight into what I am dealing with. This has never happened at home. If anyone can help me, please email me and be sure to put in the subject line that you are part of earth clinic so I don't accidentally delete the email. Once again, thank you."
08/11/2009: Ratgirldjh from Austin, Tx replies: "try taking about a teaspoon of epsom salts a day. also try taking epsom salt baths - 1 to 2 cups in a bath of warm or hot water. sounds like you are very deficient in magnesium and this is an easy way to get some quick."
08/11/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "Thank you for your insight!I was just talking to my husband about the magnesium also. I will start that today and update soon. Thank you again."
08/12/2009: Tricia from Ireland replies: "Hi tara, considering that this doesn't happen at home, i reckon you could possibly have the same neck artritis that my freind has in her neck. She gets very waek everytime she looks up for any lenght of time and the inflammation causes blood vessels to the brain to become blocked and therefore causes the dizziness and palpatations. The other places where she can also have problems is at the washing line and at the hardressers when her hair is being washed. She was told that the only cure is not to look upwards but I'm sure some of the arthritis remedies would be of benefit. BTW she doesn't feel any arthritis pain in her neck although she is riddled with pain elswhere."
08/12/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "Okay, day two of epson salts and magnesium supplements. I really thought I was fine to go to the store, but in the middle of check out it happened again.I had to tell the lady I forgot something, so that I could go hide in the bathroom for awhile. I just had to leave the store after that. It might take longer then two days to get the magnesium back into my body I suppose. I will keep trying.Wish me luck"
08/12/2009: Moi from V Ville, Ca replies: "Yes, it really does seem like your are uber stressed out and your body is just reacting to it. Still go to a dr. if you can. It is very easy to forget to nourish yourself when your head is constantly freaking out, so........
1. Drink lots of water- clean with no chemicals (sometimes we forget to drink and it has very immediate and alarming effects on the body and mind).
2. Magnesium & potassium
3. Chamomile tea
4. Take baths with Epson Salts -very cheap-
5. take a walk alone -with no chores along the way- with music
good luck"
08/13/2009: T from Baltimore, Md, Usa replies: "Hi Tara,
I have to second the suggestion about seeing a doctor, but I also understand the financial restrictions. I do hope you'll have the means to see one soon so you can rule out anything overtly physical.
You say this has happened at a checkout, 3 times now? Have you ever had these symptoms at any other time/place? Was it always the same store? If it's always in just the same place, I wonder if there's something there that you are sensitive to. What is your diet like? Are there any underlying conditions?
On the nutrition front, make sure you have adequate iron intake. Getting a ferritin blood test would be good, and you can order one yourself online far cheaper than going through the doctor. Whether you get iron through diet or supplements, taking some vitamin C when you ingest iron will assist your body in assimilating it. I do want to caution that too much iron can be a very bad thing, so be reasonably sure you're deficient before supplementing. Magnesium is great but you should be balancing that with calcium, and you should read up on zinc/copper balance as well as that could be playing a role. In addition, a good B-complex could assist with the stress reactions and provide numerous other benefits.
Sending out a prayer that you get the answers you need and become free of this. Please do keep us posted!"
08/14/2009: Huck from San Jose, Ca replies: "You might have epilepsy you need to go see a doctor a neurologist - Do any of your family members have epilepsy on your fathers side or mothers side?
Don't take baths because if you have a seizure you can drown.
If you have epilepsy it can be controlled with medication just go see a doctor.
No worries"
08/14/2009: Jen from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "Hi...I also think you may have a form of seizure (Sz) disorder.
I use to work in a grocery store and we had a few people have seizures in the store. The fluorescent lights can induce a Sz.
I now work in the field of sleep disorders and use to do EEG (brain studies to rule out (R/O) Sz disorder and other anomalies) studies and we would have the patients come in slep deprived and flash lights at varying speeds to try and induce/produce some type of epileptiform (AKA a Sz) activity.
Make sure you also get plenty of good sleep and that you do not have a sleep disorder. If you are otherwise in good health ie., you wake-up well rested without headaches or any other unwanted symptoms/complaints and are able to sleep throughout the night, then you are likely fine in that department.
All of the other comments on this thread are great!
Be safe. Be well and do get to the doctor as soon as you can for an evaluation."
08/15/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "I have no family history on either side. My diet is pretty decent, I'm an organic gardener and love love my veggies. Do you think that a seizure can be caused by stress, and if so where do I go from here. I plan on seeing a doctor on Monday, the only problem is that I will have to go to minor care and they never do any kind of testing and they will see what my symptoms are and medicate from there. I really need to have a cat scan or something I would think, but for the uninsured it costs a bunch.Thank you all for your posts, it's nice to know that even tho you don't know me, you have taken time to give me advice. God bless you for being caring people, it's a gift."
08/16/2009: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca replies: "Why don't you find a good acupuncturist. It will be less expensive than Western medicine and probably get to the root of it. The body is treated very differently in this approach and finds a way to balance it rather than hide it with meds."
08/18/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "I've been doing some research on stress and seizures. There is a type of seizure that is not epilepsy and is brought on by stress.I also think I have an ear infection that is throwing my balance way off and making me feel disoriented. So first thing is first, quit smoking after 26 years, get my vitamins back into my body, get the h2o2 into my ears and pray that this works.I don't think a doctor could do any better. The stress might be a little harder to get under control, but I am trying. Oh yah, drink lots of water. Thank you all for your posts. Now let's see if doctor me is right."
08/19/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "Update. My mother in law, bless her heart was really worried and said, now honey you really need to see a doctor just to be sure it's not serious. Okay, so I went to the ER, sat around for three hours just for them to tell me that yes in fact the stress is having an impact on me.And yes there is pressure behind your ears.So doctor brilliant prescribes me an antihistamine(sp?)It's been three days and this overglorified junk is not helping at all. Not to mention the side effects include being dizzy.Great, that'll cost me over 400.00. I am at the end of my rope here.I will need to go somewhere else, someone has got to take me seriously. I am continuing my regular routine of vitamins etc. I'll update when something happens."
08/20/2009: Talia from Redondo Beach, California replies: "Symptoms of an overactive thyroid include shaking and tremors, one possibility. A hypoglycemic attack can cause shaking. Seizures can also be caused by an allergic reaction to medication. Also, don't discount an allergic reaction to a food or drink you recently added to your diet. Any artificial sweeteners or msg in your diet? Think about starting a food diary and rack your brain for anything you started around the same time as your seizures. Video games can cause seizures.
Vitamin or Mineral Deficiency
Hypoglycemia
Allergic reaction to medication or food
Video games or cartoons that flash a lot of images at once (read up on the Japanese children that suffered seizures after watching a certain cartoon show years ago)
Hope the seizures stop asap. Keep us updated!Wishing you the best of health,
Talia"
08/22/2009: Frank from NY, NY replies: "Interesting causes of seizures on this thread. Another condition that can cause seizures is cysticercosis, an infection from ingestion of tapeworm larvae. From the CDC website:
"Neurocysticercosis (cysticerci in the brain, spinal cord):Symptoms of neurocysticercosis depend upon where and how many cysticerci (often called lesions) are found in the brain. Seizures, and headaches are the most common symptoms. However, confusion, lack of attention to people and surroundings, difficulty with balance, swelling of the brain (called hydrocephalus) may also occur. Death can occur suddenly with heavy infections.

08/22/2009: Magdowser from Hendersonville, Nc replies: "Tara, overnight after a MRI in Jan of '87 to rule out MS (it didn't), I started having movements that felt like seizures and looked like body quakes. Took me a while, but finally realized I was sensitive to electromagnetic fields (EMF) and even somebody getting close to me (aura) would set me off. Even fall down over power lines, water streams, etc. Your note about being near the cashier is what made me write you. So pay attention to lighting, refrigeration boxes in stores, etc. and take notes as to what you feel, muscle tightness, seizures, etc. Who knows, it could be the neurocysticercosis, heavy metals, gluten ramifications, etc. Determined not to die dumb, I hit the alternative field, and am 90% less sensitive with thanks to evening primrose oil, cranio sacral therapy, removing amalgams, earthclinic, low dose naltrexone, oil pulling, going off gluten, dowsing what is good for me (supplement-wise). Keep up your healing quest! MAG"
08/25/2009: Tara from Clarkston, Washington replies: "Mag, that is fascinating. I am really ready for anything that might be helpful. I went to yet another doctor that prescribed a low dose blood pressure med although my bp is 122/80 and that was in an office, so would probably be lower in a normal (for me) setting. It is a beta blocker, and although is has stopped the adrenaline rush from making my body freak out, it is just covering up the symptom and not getting to the cause. Today I had accupressure, which was awesome, but that too is more money than I can afford. But, the guy that did it told me that it might be that my liver is not processing this certain hormone quickly enough and that may be causing my blood vessels to squeeze and that in effect causes me to have the trembling and such. Because my body is needing, I guess, to pump more blood at these times. Although I am glad that the beta blockers are working in the short term, traditional medicine always puts a smiley face on a problem that needs fixing. Can you tell me more about what you have done.I am not real familiar with some of the terminology you use but am willing and able to learn.Thank you for your insight. If it's not creepy to you, please email me at walburn8@msn.com and put on the subject line earthclinic or mini seizures so I can fish you out of my spam folder. Good night and God bless you and yours. Tara"
09/29/2010: Rachael from Naples, Fl replies: "Have you considered panic attacks? I've had very similar symptoms caused by anxiety which is induced by stress."
09/05/2011: K. M. from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "A friend started having seizures as an adult and couldn't understand why. All the scans and tests came up negative. He was put on medication but it just gave him bad side effects and didn't really help so he stopped taking them. Then he was sitting in a theatre eating thick taffy candies when he felt something happen on one of his back teeth but it was so fast he swallowed it. Turns out a candy had stuck to a loose mercury filling and pulled it off his tooth. He figures he pooped it out because after that all his seizures and mental issues went away.So you might want to consider removing any mercury fillings and detox the heavy metals in your body to be sure they're not short circuiting your brain."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 06/26/2012: Babyangel from Sinton, Texas, Usa: "Hello, my name is Katie. I had mild epilepsy since 11/12/2004 when I had my first grandmal it was induced by stress from seeing my mother stay in hospital 1 month (shes ok now) I took phenytoin 500mg for 11 months, the side affects were HORRIBLE! I was fine for years I knew to avoid foul stong odors such as from nail polish and hair coloring that made me feel I may have a seizure if I was around that odor long. I had a few close calls I drank herbal tea called chamomile to relieve the "yucky" feeling I may have a seizure. I let the tea bag sit in the coffee cup of water I put in microwave 2 mins sit in the water 15mins to make it stronger, if it was an emergency I would get the chamomile tea stems and chew on it like gum, I had 1-3 mild nocturnal seizures each year I knew it was about to happen when I felt the extreme "deja vu" feeling. I started to take a herbal vitamin called valerian root since I had trouble sleeping.. This worked very well 2-3 each night and I had no more nocturnal seizures
I started getting older so, like many other young adults drinking became common for me. My finst few yrs I was fine having 6-8 beers. Then around oct 2011 I started to binge drink 10-12 beers at a time 2-3 times a week until I had a simple partial seizure feb 15 2012 from the bad hangover that triggered it. I did not see a doctor right away I just stopped drinking and smoking tobacco. I still did not feel well I had "close calls" daily and had 2 more simple partial seizures. I finally saw a doctor march 16 2012, I explained to the doctor I never want to take dilantin again. It was so horrible, so the doctor gave me something thats helped ALOT, .50 mg alprazolam (generic xanax) I feel relaxed now, I havent had anymore seizures or closecalls. I break the pill 1/2 so I take only .25mg of xanax at time. I still drink chamomile tea. I also like to drink either cinnamon tea or take 2 cinnamon capsules in the morning that HELPS ALOT the cinnamon, I also take 1 Vitamin E tablet, and 1 omega3 daily.
Whats helped me most is exercising or staying busy on feet!! I havent drank or smoked in over 4 months now . And if you're taking a medication make sure you read online of warnings what may contradict that medicine thats very important.. and if you believe in god, keep something holy closeby. I personally carry a ring rosary always in my pocket with me and next to my bed when im asleep..
I hope I can help someone that reads this.. I wanted to post here hoping to help someone.. God bless you"

[WARNING!] 02/22/2009: Debra from High Point, North Carolina USA: "I have used natural health remedies for a long time. I have not used a lot that I have seen here on this site and will love to try them.
What someone tries for a natural health remedy that effects only them and their body is their own business.
There are certain conditions, such as seizures, diabetes, or anything that can effect your concious state of mind, that everyone needs to be very careful about.
When a person with seizures goes off meds, they open themselves up to having massive seizures. Brian injuries can not be cured overnight.
My son and I were almost killed by someone who had simply reduced their seizure medication. That choice was not fair to us, or anyone else who may have been hurt.
We had a car accident. It only effected three people in the car, myself, my son and my husband who had the seizure. He has gone often for months and weeks without a seizure with low or no medication. Eventually it is going to happen again.
With his medication at full theraputic levels it never happens.
This highway accident could have resulted in dozens of people hurt or dead. So please I beg you, as I sit here with broken bones and torn muscles, do not stop taking seizure medications and drive or do anything dangerous if you were to have a seizure. It is grossly irresponsible to everyone else in society. That is not a natural way to be."
08/01/2012: Johnnyboy from Melbourne, Australia replies: "People who suffer from epilepsy are legally banned from driving a car, if they do so, sadly they are putting the public at risk, the same way an intoxicated driver will."
11/08/2012: Susan from New York, Ny replies: "Everything from the pharmacutical industry helps one thing but damages 5 other things in your body. My only questions is why was he driving so soon? Why didn't he wait till he was free of seizures for a year when he was trying something new."

12/31/2012: Alexis from Lithonia, Ga: "Greetings. At the age of 4, I had a head trauma, and shortly after started having petite mals regurlarly until about the age of 11 or 12. During this period I took phenabarbartol, depakote, etc. At 12, my seizures seemed to stop, my parents and doctors agreed to stop my meds. Fast forward to when I'm 22 years old, I started showing signs of intense petite mals, being paralyzed for minutes on end. But then when I got pregnant at 24, I started having grand mal seizures. However, now I only seize when I am asleep, or during sleep, or when I am about to wake up. I need advice or help, my meds are harmful to my body and mind, they make me feel awful. Two years ago, I almost had a deadly reaction to lamictil, and am now taking topamax. Thanks in advance."
Replies12/31/2012: Dianna from Austin, Tx replies: "I have had help from taking magnesium. especially epsom salts. Taking about 1/2 teaspoon a day works very well.
I wouldn't stop all meds but you could just start adding it to your diet and slowly taper off the meds and keep some around just in case.I keep klonopin in case I feel a seizure coming on. Hope this helps!"
01/01/2013: Timh from Louisville, Ky, Usa replies: "Alexis: Try taking a supplement of Magnesium Malate as it will help the neurology, metabolism, and detoxification. 12/27/2012: Karen from Allenstown, New Hampshire, United States: "Hi Ted, Do you think you could honestly help me? These doctors that put me on medicine all my life and tell me that I can't do things I enjoy doing and yet, I just end up ignoring them because they have NO clue to enjoy life. Except for the part that I was 13 years old to tell me don't get your hopes up to have a kid anytime soon. I can't ever have the chance to drive because.. When I see those cop cars, disco lights, anything that flashes too fast and colorful I just stare, stand there, and than fall down. Sometimes I get mad for no apparent reason and after I throw a fit, I forget why I was mad. Than I consistantly sleep let's say, 20 hours. Sometimes more. I was born with them, I honestly think.. These won't ever go away.
I don't drink soda anymore, stopped a good 2 almost 3 years ago. Junk food is pretty much gone for me, until I feel like wanting some. I have the petite seizures and this doctor thinks I have monthly seizures, becuase I usually get one when I'm around my monthly. Stress also brings them on. If I'm really worried about something, let's say homework, I have 3 papers due, 1 due on Friday, next due on like tomorrow and the other due on Wednesday. I'll start getting myself worked up plus like other things on my mind. I take topiramate 8 25 MG Capsules and their sprinkles because I can't swallow pills. I tried, everytime I do, end up getting choked. I'm turning twenty next year and I'm really sick of all this. I would really appreciate you if you could help me please and Thank you."
Replies12/27/2012: Ed2010 from Oakville, Canada replies: "In India or at least in my province, what we do is whenever a person is suddenly getting an epilepsy attack. We give a nice iron rod or atleast 6 inch door key made of iron and make the person hold it for some time till the epilepsy gets under control. This works to control the episode of epilepsy attack. What I recommend is, wear a thick chain made of cast iron, or a thick bracelet made of iron. This will definitely control the frequency of epilepsy. And along with this you can try other natural medicines. good health"
12/27/2012: Citygirl27 from Richardson, Tx, Usa replies: "I am not Ted but I outgrew childhood epilepsy and here's how.Remove the stimulus that is causing seizures (MSG in vaccines and food, aspartame, and whatever you know bothers you). For some, it is even food coloring!
Consider supplementing magnesium. I didn't do this until mine was well under control, but read it is of great assistance for that.
Get your doc to taper down your meds one increment at a time. At one point I was on high doses 3x a day of at least 6 different anticonvulsants. Doc gradually lowered dose of one at a time and monitored behaviors and levels, successfully, til finally I had nothing left to take. This took about 10 years, it is not an overnight process. Prior to doing this, I spent A LOT of time in the hospital, believe me. Many of the meds I took are available as generics now.
Consider a ketogenic diet. My mom said it didn't work for me but I believe they didn't try it for long enough.
Strangely enough, mine completely stopped with head trauma (dont do this on purpose!! ) in a car accident. It is well known in the field of neurology that trauma instigates repair. I also cracked my pelvis in that accident, and was told I wouldn't ever have kids, or live past 21. I am double that age now, with kids. When I first got old enough to drive, I had to have "support", in other words just could not drive alone, like a permit driver had to have someone with me. Then that restriction fell off my license with no comotion.
I drive, have a graduate degree, and two KIDS! with no known defects. I waited til 5 years off the meds to have my kids. If I can do it, you can *hugs*.
I just thank my mom, and thank god, for insisting surgery was not necesary, because it is not."
12/17/2012: Luke from London, Uk: "My mother has epilepsy and has done for about 30 years. She is on medication but it has a negative effect on her short term memory. Her Doctor has confirmed that this is due to the medication. I am looking around to see if there are any herbal or holistic alternatives. Thanks, Luke"

10/21/2012: Gricell from Orange, Nj: "Pls what can I give my 4 year old.. He has drop seizures but no meds are working for him and doctors dont care to find what is causing it.... I need help.. he is on lamictal and depakote and still falling every day ....."
Replies10/22/2012: Waysoon from Motown, Ca/ Usa replies: "Hi! When a full battery of doctors can't figure out a problem, the journey begins. Incurable means it's an inside job, done by you and God, together. After asking to be led whether to say anything here, I opened up Dr. Levy's Curing the Incurable, on arsenic poisoning. It mentions that:"Chronic exposure to an arsenical will commonly cause variable degrees of muscle weakness in the extremities, sometimes progressing to an objective wasting of the muscle mass. A degenerative condition of the brain can result as well. Characteristic rashes occur, and many other nonspecific signs and symptoms...."
The first thing that occurred to me on reading your post was plaque on the brain, with falling. This is pure instinct, but what I so often now suggest could "first do no harm", and that is a lypospheric form of Vit. C that can cross the blood-brain barrier. This form of Vit. C can remove plaque or other toxins, and counteract the toxicity, nullifying its effect. This info might be worthwhile for others, like myself, who have suffered leg and arm pains, numbness, and muscle wasting. This seems like a strangely large number of people experiencing similar symptoms. Ask yourself, is your boy experiencing any other symptoms? Any like these?
I believe that coconut oil can also remove plaque from the brain, as it works on alzheimers.
I believe it is possible that arsenic could make its way into a water system, etc. It took place in India. It is also being found in food sources. Just some ideas to begin to chew on. --T."

10/09/2012: Sleepless21 from Staten Island, Ny: "Hi Everyone. This looks like a great website. I was wondering if anyone had info on the following. About three years ago I had lithotripsy (electrical blast to rid kidney stones). Upon waking I was admitted into the ICU because their were noted heart changes after the procedure and my heart rate bounced from 30 to over 200. I ended up having to have a cardiac ablation and am still left with cardiac arrhythmias. After this time my sleep quality significantly changed. I mentioned it to the doctors (my primary and cardiologist) and it was ignored.
After waking up every hour to 20 minutes each night and being totally sleep deprived I had a sleep study. The 1st study revealed that I had sleep apnea. I was not satisfied for many reasons so I went to new doctor and had another. The second said I did not have apnea and dx me with neurological issue. I followed up with a neurologist and they said that I am having seizures while sleeping. I am thinking that if lithotripsy affected my electric of my heart it prob is the cause of the electric of my brain. I am going to see a sleep/seizure specialist in NYC in 2 weeks for 2nd opinion. I do not want to take medication but I can not be waking every 1/2 - 1 hour each night. Any thoughts? Thx!"
Replies10/10/2012: Timh from Louisville, Ky, Usa replies: "Sleepless21, there is a Dr Tennant that is finding how exactly cell voltage and cell PH (acid / alkaline) affects the entire body in health or disease. Here is a link to his w-site: http://tennantinstitute.us/In short, for immediate remediation of your symptoms supplement Ionic Trace Minerals; this will bring balance back into your body. Dr Tennant also expresses how important Thyroid function is in relation to Voltage, so it is advised to have your Thyroid checked.
Hope this helps and good luck."
10/10/2012: Citygirl27 from Richardson, Tx, Usa replies: "Try supplementing tyrosine. It helps with both sleep and brain health. It is a precursor to dopamine, norepinepherine, and epinepherine. First try taking 500mg just at bedtime. And after 1-2 weeks or so, start taking the same amount in the mid- afternoon as well (between meals). Try that for 2 weeks. If that's proving unsettling, switch back to just at bedtime. Bedtime is best for aminos, as sleep is when you produce the most growth hormone, but some have daytime benefits as well."
10/01/2012: Elizabeth from Lancaster, Ny: "I have been on anti seizure medication since age 13, I am now 30. I was on tegretol, it was controlled, my dr then tried to take me off the drug and the seizures came back. I then was put on keppra, they are controlled outside 1 episode in 2 years and only during the night. I am wondering if its ever too late to consider using alternative methods vs drugs with the possibility of coming off the drugs. Keppra is starting to give me crazy anxiety and it would be my dream to find a cure for this."
Replies10/01/2012: Ed2010 from Oakville, Canada replies: "Seizures are caused due to Ascaris larve in brain and other toxins. And this ascaris carries the bacteria Bacteroides fragilis and other virus. These bacteria and viruses don't need oxygen to survive that means more oxygen to the brain will kill it.As Ted recommended you have to take alkalazing formula which inturn increases oxygen in the blood level.
You may have to do a extensive internal para cleanse.
And my favourite take HOME MADE MILK KEFIR - the reason it has Trillions of Probiotic Bacteria and Yeast and very rich in Serotonin which keeps you calm and good neuro transmitter. It assist in the proper transmission of brain signals which can minimize the seizures.
hope this helps, thanks"
09/02/2012: Hm from Pune, Mh, India: "I have a sister, 49 soon, who stays with her older sister at Hayward, CA. The younger sister presently has a very bright 13 yr. old son and was widowed about 10 yrs ago. She's had epilepsy since she was about 20 and that has devastated her self-esteem. She's been on regular medication for many years now incl. six in the USA. Her grand seizures are largely absent but I'm told petit ones can be frequent. She's quite scattered and would be unable earn her own living.
I understand that remissions do occur quite often and somehow suspect that she is being over- or mis-medicated and this has been on for years now. Could you perhaps recommend a physician in the Hayward / Fremont areas in CA who is positive about natural supplements and adjuncts alongside conventional medications. An MD would be best as the older sister would otherwise very likely balk at the idea. Any useful leads would be most appreciated..."

07/16/2012: Mozhgan from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malaysia: "Dear Sir Ted, My sister is 45 years old. She got a high fever when she was 5 and was kept under Oxygen Bag at hospital. Using too much oxygen damaged her brain cells and resulted in Epilepsy Seizures since she was 7 years old. She has been under many medical treatments so far but no success. Her seizure occurs now milder than in her 20s and 30s but still exist. She should not have sodium because it intensifies her seizures. Please kindly give me some advice if there is still a way to help her.
Earth Clinic, I am so proud of you for your work and dedication on. I myself have been under treatment through Apple Cider Vinegar, Coconut Oil, and Hyaluronic Acid for my ankle problem since last 2 weeks and have worked very well. I was about to have a surgery with no guarantee for improvement in ankle last month (This luckily did not happen! )
May God bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hands to."
Replies07/17/2012: Muslim from Oslo, Norway replies: "Hi Mozghan, you should read the post from Rsw from Uniontown, Oh 07/16/2012. The ketogen may be e temporary relief for her. Read about it on wikipedia found something interesting about MCT (medium chain triglycerides) which coconut oil is totally or mostly part of.MCT diet
In the 1960s, it was discovered that medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) produce more ketones per unit of energy than normal dietary fats (which are mostly long-chain triglycerides). MCTs are more efficiently absorbed and are rapidly transported to the liver via the hepatic portal system rather than the lymphatic system. The severe carbohydrate restrictions of the classic ketogenic diet made it difficult for parents to produce palatable meals that their children would tolerate. In 1971, Peter Huttenlocher devised a ketogenic diet where about 60% of the calories came from the MCT oil, and this allowed more protein and up to three times as much carbohydrate as the classic ketogenic diet. The oil was mixed with at least twice its volume of skimmed milk, chilled, and sipped during the meal or incorporated into food. He tested it on twelve children and adolescents with intractable seizures. Most children improved in both seizure control and alertness, results that were similar to the classic ketogenic diet. Gastrointestinal upset was a problem, which led one patient to abandon the diet, but meals were easier to prepare and better accepted by the children. The MCT diet replaced the classic ketogenic diet in many hospitals, though some devised diets that were a combination of the two.-Wikipedia"
12/27/2012: Citygirl27 from Richardson, Tx, Usa replies: "Coconut oil is ~65% MCT's and offers may more benefits over plain MCT oil, such as the antiviral properties of monolaurin in the coconut. And, it tastes far superior and has many cooking uses beyond just "drinking" it. Try virgin coconut oil for all your cooking oil needs, and add it to tea or hot choc - yum! MCT's work because they generate ketones, and ketones are much more efficient as fuel for your brain than glucose. It takes a lot more glucose to get the same results as a smaller amount of MCT's/ketones. The reason is brain cells' mitochondria dont need as much ketones to make ATP."
05/10/2012: 8children from Dayton, Ohio, United States: "My daughter presented with this two weeks ago and Atavan knocked out the seizures. Upon returned home she had 3 seizures a day. That continued for 1 week. On day 11 after 1st seizure and taking 312 mg. Twice a day of depacote she had 11 seizures. day 12 - 14 seizures. day 13 - 16 seizures. day 14, admitted for eeg study and given the depacote and kepra. Seizures continue to increase and now on day 16 she is having clusters of 2, 3, 4 or five seizures all in a close span of 5-10 minutes and all 20-45 sec in length. I plan on no sugar tomorrow as just feel the hospital food is worse than her diet at home.
What is your thoughts on the ketogenic diet and have you seen success with that in a child? She had a uti and strep with the initial seizure episode that took us to the hospital. Before that, healthy child, happy, smart and loving life. Now sweet as can be just hard to see her go through seizures."

07/23/2012: Johnnyboy from Melbourne replies: "Your prob sounds like many trials on numerous medications that I endured. The side effects were worse than the seizures. I eventually ended up on 2meds, tegretol and keppra. Now, after many years I am aging and I'm tired of living with both seizures and side effects. Recently I began a Japanese water diet and I am pleased with my improvement in health. Why not look it up, you have nothing to lose."

It was telling the story about how coconut oil decrease seizures, it went on to say many other things affected by the brain disfuctioning were also helped. Lecithin is also another very interesting thing rich in omega 3 and 6 and ALA which are also good for the brain. Both certainly worth researching. Have you tried posting on the Facebook page for earth clinic, Asking for tried and tested remedies and results. Good Luck.:)"

06/12/2012: Citygirl27 from Richardson, Tx, Usa replies: "I had seizures/was diagnosed with epilepsy at 18 months. With my recent reseach (I'm 40 now), I am starting to see that it might have been mercury or MSG in a vaccine - that is prime vaccination period in life and this was 1971-73, or MSG in baby food. Hard to put a finger on it. My mom said the ketogenic diet didn't work for me. Don't know how long she tried it. They stopped when I got run over by a car when I was 10 (Dr Blaylock says that head trauma can instigate repair often but do not hurt yourself, this was a car accident). I still was on (dangerous) meds - every one you can think of - til I was about 18. In my teenage years, my Bangor, Maine doctor (Dr Kittredge, who died in the late 90's but his partners still practice) weaned me gradually off of the diff meds. As this happened, my reading and musical comprehension improved dramatically. When I went to college in '89 I met a neurologist in Bloomington, IN who just said 'great, if you need something, give me a call'. I never did have any problems after that. I was down to 1 tegretol a day by Dr K. , and forgot it enough times with no problems that I never ordered more. For a little while, I would get occasional headaches (finals week! ) that Tegretol would be the only thing that would work (wierd! ), then that stopped. I was told with the pelvic fracture I got then - age 10 - and the drugs I was on then, that I would never have kids. I have two healthy boys! There is hope. I am 30 years seizure free, but have spent a long time since then controlling flinches I would get after eating certain foods. Discovered a big target = MSG. My email is veryvanilla27 at yahoo dot com if you have any questions."
07/17/2012: Citygirl27 from Richardson, Tx, Usa replies: "I also want to add that I have been on no meds for 22 years, and siezure free for 31. I have been driving since age 16 (I was discontinued off 2 of my anti convulsants that year). Presently, I am no more of a risk to anyone than any given person that may have an asthma/epileptic/diabetic/MS/glaucoma/heart/etc attack in or out of a car I. E. These can happen to anyone. Driving is by nature more dangerous than other modes of travel, that is why we have insurance. Nothing is 100 percent preventable in anyone, and the population is not going to all take dangerous zombie medication (like the government would like! ) for the off-chance a biological fallacy may occur in an individual. Everyone is unique. All you can do is monitor and protect those of concern closest to you, we can't expect to control everyone. Anyone should be able to take full confidence in any medication reductions prescribed. Besides, put it in perspective - the chance of getting injured or worse by a drunk driver is higher than all these biological anomalies put together."

01/05/2012: Francisca from Zug, Zug, Switzerland replies: "Peggy, I was just about to post a few comments about a book I am reading which might help quite a few people on this site when I saw your question. The book is called Transdermal Magnesium therapy by Mark Sircus (I believe that it has been mentioned on this site before! ). There is not much about epilepsy, at least not in the half I have read so far but maybe enough to help you!I will also advise this book to anyone suffering from cancer and with children with ADD and ADHD, as I saw quite a few questions about those problems recently! One thing, read also the references sections. Usually I don't read those but he includes as lot of information in them, including useful links to sites that might be of help! As I said I haven't finished reading this book yet but, despite the many repetitions I think that it is very much worth reading!"
01/05/2012: Louwrence from Rustenburg, North West South Africa replies: "Hi Peggy, Apart from the mms try to get the child off of all sugars starches candies, soda pops, soya, cereals in other words all forms of starch. Maybe magnesium & iodine will also help."
01/05/2012: Peggy from To, Ca replies: "Thank you guys!!! She takes 500mg magnesium, haven't tried iodine. 3 seizure since last night, help me help me help me!"
01/05/2012: Linda from San Francisco, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Peggy, Have blood sugar seizures been ruled out? According to what I have read, not only here, but in other places, seizures happening for other reasons can be mistaken for epilepsy. At the link below, Bangkok Ted talks about this briefly:http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/pH.html
This was also written up in the research of Dr. Carey Reams, IIRC not only Diabetes, but Hypoglycemia can produce seizures.
There are also certain intestinal parasites that can cause seizures.
There is also a Millipede or Centipede (I do not recall which) whose bite can produce them, this actually happened to a friend of mine in Arizona. She had seizures from it for years before the docs found out what it was.
I hope this may give you some ideas for further research.
Linda"
01/05/2012: Rsw from Uniontown, Oh replies: "The Ketogenic Diet from Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, MD has helped many young children with epileptic seizures with no side effects. It is supposedly also effective with adults. Jim Abraham made a movie about his discovery of the diet while his son was suffering with anti-convulsive drugs. Meryl Streep is in it and it is titled "First, Do No Harm" or something like that."
01/05/2012: Zorro from Milwaukee, Wisconsin replies: "Hello, This 15 year old with seizures is not drinking anything with aspartame are they? It has been known to cause seizures.Zorro"
01/06/2012: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "I also think you need to rule out aspartame use. Diet drinks, chewing gum, anything "sugar free" could be suspect. Caffeine sports drinks... The list goes on. What is her diet like?"
01/20/2012: Shari from Rockville, Md, Usa replies: "I am a natural health practitioner and my daughter, 4 years old has epilepsy.I have tried various herbal and nutritional remedies because I believe chemical drugs has lots of side effects specially for kids.
Recently, I have done lots of research and study abour her epilepsy ( mostly happens in the morning), I found that I need to improve alkaline. I found out that fat allergy can be the cause of her epilepsy ( she is allergic to meat fat, milk fat, ... since her metabolism and absorption has issues). I studied a book that says sulfur deficiency can cause fat allergy. Food sources of sulfur such as onion, radishes, turnip, horseradish, cranberries, mustard, dill, spinach and eggs can help to reduce fat allergy and epilepsy caused by fat allergy.
More fruits ( apple, carrot, cranberry, grape, ... ) and vegetables help to keep the blood alkaline and reduce epilepsy seizure."
02/27/2012: Mom2nj from Mahwah, New Jersey, USA replies: "My son (9 years) recently started having night seizures. After doing some research and watching him at night I found out that he sleeps with his mouth open. Also while doing the EEG the nurse asked him to breath out thru his mouth- or HYPERVENTILATE - to induce a seizure. That got me doing research into the connection between seizures and hyperventilation. Then I found the following website. http://www.normalbreathing.com/d-seizure-threshold.phpAfter starting the Buteyko breathing method and taping his mouth at night to enable nose-breathing, his seizures stopped completely. So please check it out. You dont need to buy anything to do this. More info is available on Youtube and other sites.
I have used this "Buteyko breathing method" for my older son to stop his Asthma. After being on several medications and 2 inhalers daily for 4 years, he was able to go medicine free with in a week of starting Buteyko breathing method. This method is explained in a book by Teresa Hale called " Breathing Free". Try to get it from a library. It is very easy to follow.
This may sound too simple. But please try. IT WORKS.
Good luck."
