"A cough, also known as tussis is a sudden, often repetitive, spasmodic contraction of the thoracic cavity, resulting in violent release of air from the lungs, and usually accompanied by a distinctive sound.

Coughing is an action the body takes to get rid of substances that are irritating the breathing passages. A cough is usually initiated to clear a buildup of phlegm in the trachea. Coughing can also be triggered by a bolus of food entering the trachea rather than the esophagus due to a failure of the epiglottis. Frequent or chronic coughing usually indicates the presence of a disease. Provided the patient is a non-smoker and has a normal chest X-ray, the cause of chronic cough in 93% of all patients is due to asthma, heartburn or post-nasal drip. Other causes of chronic cough include chronic bronchitis and medications such as ACE inhibitors. Coughing can happen voluntarily as well as involuntarily." (Wikipedia)

Lots of garlic, thyme tea, ivy thyme complex (vogel) half and other half echinacea, high dose vitamin c, zinc 3 times a day, vicks on your chest, steaming with eucylyptus, and if no impovement in a few days go to see a herbalist.

Skip the alomond, the butters, the honey on it's own (manuka with lemon fine), any sugars (like syrups) or these will be very mucous producing and lower immunity..."

[YEA]  07/31/2009: Alicia Martines from Asheville, NC writes: "Red Onion.

I am from Mexico, and my mother recommended me a red onion home made syrup for nagging coughs.

My first son had a times a cough that would never really go away. My second son was an extremely premature baby and therefore with "weak" immature lungs. I used this homemade syrup after trying everything, including various homeopathic formulas.

The original syrup calls for sugar but I have replaced it with honey or stevia. The onion has to be RED onion and I give it to my children either as lung strengthener or as medicine qwhen they do have a cough or cold.

Ingredients
1 big red onion washed and peeled.
sweetener (brown sugar, stevia, honey)

Cut the onion HORIZONTALLY in slices. Start at the base of the onion. Lay the newly cut base and place base in a bowl. Add a layer of the stevia or honey in here. GO easy as you have many layers to go and the sweetener from the top layers will eventually sip through the bottom layers
Repeat until the whole onion has been cut and reconstructed on the bowl.

Let it rest for at least 15 hrs at room temperature. I do it overnight.
Next day I have a bowl with about half a glass of "syrup". Children like the sweet taste. It doesn't taste like onion at all.

I hope you find this remedy as "miraculous" as I have!"

To start with it was phlegmy and then turned to a non producing spasmic cough. I have had a course of antibiotics. I was getting fed up with all and then I tried some remedies recommended in EC. Took almond butter with honey, turmeric and honey in warm milk, ginger and honey in warm water, pulped ginger in hot water, thyme leaves in hot water, sugar and honey in layered red onion slices and drinking the juice and finally leaving sliced onion at the bedside table. Now my cough turned into green phlegmy cough. What is the best way to get rid of it? some suggestions, please. Many Thanks, SILVER NISSAN"

05/05/2011: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "Re the crackling breath... Garlic and cayenne should clear it up in a couple of days. You will cough some stuff up and that should be that."
05/06/2011: Terese from Terranora, Nsw Australia replies: "Hi Gavin,

Thanks for the info, how much of the cayenne and garlic do you take? I find that raw garlic gives me indigestion."

05/06/2011: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "Ive been chopping up three cloves of garlic. Same amount of ginger and giving it a fry in the wok just briefly in virgin olive oil.. Then frying a slice of bread then an egg... Then press about a third of a teaspoon of cayenne into the fried bread on a corner.. and putting some egg yoke over it straight away and eating. The ginger has nothing to do with the crackily throut issue but.. The ginger really does act like a cortico steroid without any side effects for stopping back pain... (The actual recipe for backpain is ginger tumeric and cayenne) and need a full week to clear up any pain... but as far as the Throat and lung issue goes The cayenne alone will do it in no time."
01/17/2012: Martian from Ventura, Ca.usa replies: "500ml regular coke plus small handful of fresh ginger peeled with potato peeler, put together in aa saucepan, bring to a boil and simmer fo 10 minutes, strain off ginger and drink as hot as you can. Magic, this recipe came from China, and works for me. I think it is the zinc in ginger."

ANISE SEED TINCTURE FOR NONPRODUCTIVE COUGH

[YEA]  01/11/2008: Brigitte from Houston, Texas writes: "re: anise seed tincture for treatment of nonproductive coughs. A nonproductive cough is another name for a dry cough which does nothing to move phlem from the throat and lumgs. This is often a precursor to a more serious ailment like pneumonia. It is of the utmost importance that you remove the excessive phlem from your system. I have found that the best expectorant that I can find is made by placing five tablespoons anise seeds into 1 cup of rum. I take no more than 2 teaspoons of this as needed to induce a cough which allows for the mucus to be removed from the body. A note to nursing mothers who have problems with milk production; a good side affect of anise is that it increases milk production in lactating mothers. I know this for a fact as my last child was born when I was 40 and I had problems producing milk sufficient to meet my child's needs. Be cognisant of the fact that you do not want to over do it with alcohol if you are nursing as this would be counter productive to the health and well being of the child who depends on you for nourishment. I used an anise tea when I was nursing it works well for increasing milk production."

My question is, do I let the anise soak in the rum for a certain amt of time before then taking the 2 tsp of it as needed? If you could be more specific I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you."

A lot of non productive coughing, wheezing and rattling. At times leaving me short of breath. I was looking for natural treatments for persistant cough and came accross this site. I immediately made a tall glass of AVC and honey with warm water. It tastes good to me so no problem. I didn't really think it was going to work on such a bad cough I was even beginning to wonder if I had developed some bad lung disease but within a few minutes after drinking the mixture the coughing subsided. It's been about two hours and still there's no coughing, no wheezing, no rattle. I'll do it again in the morning and through the day tomorrow. Thank you so much for all the great posts."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  10/20/2011: Maypeacebewithall from Singapore writes: "I was coughing real badly until to the point of nearly vomitting. I couldn't sleep at night as the cough kept me awake. I am coughing almost the whole day with maybe around half an hour break in between or less. It's like almost non-stop coughing. I cough till my stomach muscles ache. I was desparate for relief and tried many remedies including those mentioned in Earthclinc like cayenne pepper, putting menthol rub on my soles, etc but all these yield only temporary relief. Yesterday night, I prayed for help in desperation and I suddenly thought of the apple cider vinegar mentioned in Earthclinic. I took 2 teaspoons mixed with water and went to bed and I did not even cough once in the night. I slept through the night soundly! There was still some coughing when I woke up this morning but I am at least 50% better. Thank you, Earthclinic and to the readers who contributed to their experiences!"

Study the effects of the mixture. The effects could stay longer with natural oils like palm oils, olive oil, fish oils, etc. Know the required weight of the mixture your body needs to defend itself. The overdose side effect is mostly "drunkenness". Sometimes strange feelings. Thanks."

Fresh out of ACV, had no choice but to try using regular vinegar bought from organic store. Mixed 1cup boiling water, ~1 generous tsp organic honey, ~3tsp vinegar, and drank it like a hot tea. The relief was instantaneous. It made the cough go away. Look forward to drinking more to help my recovery.

P.S. Then I read about the difference between ACV and regular vinegar @

08/04/2011: Kay from In The Valley, Ca replies: "Amanda from Los Angeles, I just came accross your post while I was trying to decide what to do for my bronchitis. I'd like to offer an opinion on your condition. It sounds to me like you have post-nasal-drip. It is usually caused from allergies. Dairy would be the first thing I would look at, because I think that is a pretty common sympton. But, it could be just about anything. The list is a mile long, it could be something you are injesting or something in your home, workplace, or in your yard. How about seeing a allergist? You might want to look under Allergies on Earth Clinic to see what others have tried. I wish you luck, and I hope you get my feedback. Ksy"
10/25/2011: Ruth from Stavanger, Norway (american, Working In Norway) replies: "A further comment on the post-nasal-drip. I have a lot of sinus and throat problems, which I am convinced are caused by Candida. I recently discovered a pleasant and extremely cheap remedy. I make my own version of Xlear nasal spray. I use 1/4 tsp. Xylitol, 1/8 tsp salt, one drop peroxide and one drop grapefruit seed extract. I spray it in my nose and also inhale it as often as I think of it--the more the better. For the first time in as long as I can remember, I can sleep breathing through my nose, and have had much less sinus problems. It is so easy, so effective, and best of all, so cheap!!! I also gargle with salt water often (helps clear the mucus in your throat) and inhale 3% peroxide using a nasal spray bottle (the food grade is best, but the drug store variety is better than nothing).

As for the red onion recipe, I make something like that--boil an onion and 1/4" fresh ginger root, then crush several cloves of garlic and add after the onion/ginger is cooked. Then I mix it with enough honey to get it down and take as often as I can stand it. I give it to the kids 1 tsp. Every couple hours (maybe 1/2 tsp. for babies) until they start having loose bowels, then give them less. They will probably smell like onion and garlic for a while :)

By the way, I am on this site because I have had a dry cough all day and finally got so fed up, I checked this site. I started using each remedy I had on hand, as I would read about it, and am now coughing up lots of mucus. Thanks everyone, for your comments! God bless you!"

12/27/2011: Carly from Duluth, Mn Usa replies: "Urgent: Remember not to give honey to babies under one year because of botulism spores possibly in the honey. Sounds like a great cough remedy combination you came up with though. :)"

03/30/2011: Emilyr from Portland, Or, United States replies: "I was really hoping ACV could be a simple cure for the horrible cough I've had for over 2 weeks following a sinus infection, but it has not helped. I am 36 and pregnant, saw my doctor last week, he thinks it is a random virus and not a flu, cold, or anything bacterial. I tried Robetussin at his suggestion but that did not help a bit. I alternate between mucousy coughs, and dry spasm-like coughs and feel like it is moving into my lungs...

For the last 2 days I have taken 2T raw organic ACV w/ 1T honey and a wedge of lemon in 8oz hot water, 2 doses during the day, with very little temporary relief. Before that I was taking just one daily mug that I would sip slowly of 2T ACV with 12oz hot water with the honey and lemon, I had also tried adding cayenne, raw garlic, ginger - anything I could think of that might help, again very little/temporary relief. I am wondering how long people have used the ACV remedy before seeing results? I've also noticed some people have been taking honey and vinegar without any water, perhaps this works better but I've read that is hard on your enamel.

The Vick's on my feet remedy DID however work to provide me with a blissful 8 hour break from coughing - enough relief to finally get a good night's rest. Still searching for a cure though. I have a sensitivity to Aspergillus Niger mold and suspect that might be the cause, it is prime mold season here in Portland, OR. Working up the courage to try inhaling hydrogen peroxide... Any advice is welcomed. Thanks, emily"

03/30/2011: Blanche from Iberia Parish, Louisiana Usa replies: "Someone posted a remedy for cough that was very simple and worked for me when I had a persistent bronchitis cough. It was an onion slice or two covered by honey, taken as often as necessary. I was amazed how well it worked."
03/30/2011: Granny Laura from Waco, Tx, Usa replies: "The cough response is usually from sinus dripping down your throat and you need to clear your breathing passage.

One teaspoon of salt for canning and baking or pure sea salt in a quart of distilled water is the recipe for relief! You can sniff it up your nose over the sink, use a neti pot, or an eye dropper to get it to the targeted area, sinuses.

This usually stops a bad cough in its tracks, and can actually cure a sinus infection faster and better than antibiotics, without the nasty side effects of antibiotics.

This would be the number one remedy for coughs and colds in the world if it was fun to do! But, it has zero side effects and the only thing that could possibly go wrong is if you accidentally drowned yourself! Lol For you and the baby, give this a try.

When I tell a doctor that is what I use for my sinus and cough problems, they always get a smile on their faces and tell me how good it is for the problem, my lung specialist for my asthma was genuinely enthusiastic! They are always surprised at patients that don't want a quick fix antibiotic for the sniffles and hangnails, or worse yet (if possible), steroids. They don't take that stuff themselves but they didn't know they had a patient somewhere that was as smart as they are about safe cures for common problems!"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  06/29/2011: Ro from Denver, Co replies: "I got bronchitis almost 3 weeks ago, just finished a round of antibiotics and the cough went away. On the last day of my antibiotics, the cough came back from a virus my son had, I assume, and it hasn't stopped in 3 days (and nights! There hasn't been much sleep in my house). I have tried every cough syrup and cough drop imaginable, combined with a humidifier and herbal tea but the relief is short term.

I just read through this thread and immediately rushed to the grocery to buy this concoction (2 tbsp. of apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp. of honey, 1 tbsp. of lemon juice and 1/2 c ginger juice ( 1 tbsp. Ground ginger 1/2 c boiling water). My cough is subsiding a lot - from coughing nonstop to only once in a while now. I am just so grateful to have some relief from this and I plan to try it again and with my son tonight. Pretty miraculous."

11/17/2011: Linda from Pueblo, Colorado replies: "Ginger juice, is not ground ginger. You use raw ginger root, mince up a tablespoon, boil in one half cup of water (5 min. should do) and strain."

[YEA]  03/14/2010: Adriana from Sofia, Bulgaria writes: "I did not see any postings on ACV's ability to cure cough. It works as a cough syrup. I had terrible cough and flu this winter. So I searched online and found out that equal amounts of ACV and honey in a cup of water work miracles. I tried it and felt instant relief. It has anti-viral properties and helps fight the flu.

Here in Bulgaria it is also traditionally used to lower fever. The way it's done is to wet a cloth with the vinegar and cover the forehead and temples. The vinegar and the cooling effect of the wet cloth work together."

I tried treating it with honey, chest rub (on chest and feet), diluted apple juice, bananas (he got tired of those after only one) and cough drops. Well let me tell you, after reading your remedy of 1/2 honey, 1/2 vinegar and 1/4 cup of water, and trying it - he was 50% better after the first dosage.

I used Manuka Honey and unfiltered ACV with warmed water from the stove, he said it was strong, but he actually drank it. I was so pleased with the results that I had to reply and tell you and EC - THANKS!!! It was really worth the research and has solidified my faith in natural products."

Tonight I mixed 3 tab acv with 1 tab honey, 1 cup of water and microwaved for 1 1/2 minutes. I sipped the mixture and immediately noticed the tickle and scratchy throat diminshed. I drank another cup and and haven't felt the urge to cough after several hours. This really works!"

Then I tried something else that REALLY worked - Vicks Vapor Rub on the soles of his feet, covered by socks gave him almost instant relief for 8 hours of night-time sleeping!"

[NAY]  03/22/2009: Jeannelle from Joplin, Missouri writes: "I have had this nagging cough for about 3 months now and it is driving me crazy!! Last week I found this website and tried the ACV method, so far it has not worked like everyone else. I have taken it with natural honey and have taken the mixture up to 4 times aday! I am also doing the hydrogen peroxide method/with no results! When I cough I am coughing up thick white mucus. Am I jumping the gun or do I need to keep on taking this longer? I am at my wits end! It tickles like crazy!"

04/14/2009: Teresa from Bay City, MI replies: "Just wanted to ask Jeannelle from Joplin Missouri if you started taking blood pressure medicine recently. If so this could be the cause of your chronic cough. My father had a cough he couldn't get rid of and I told him to mention it to his Doctor and he did. It was one of the side effects of his medicine. When the Doctor switched his medicine to another type his cough went away within a week!"
04/15/2009: Caren from Johannesburg, South Africa replies: "My mother had the same for about 3 years. This was caused by her teeth. She had a bridge for 30 years and had a bad tooth. She had it pulled and no more problems. She also changed her blood pressure tablets. Read the side effects of the medication. Oil Pulling will be a good idea."
04/17/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn. replies: "Hello Jeanelle, Luckily you have already stumbled onto something that works for that 3 months cough. I wish I had known about H202 inhalation when I caught pertussis (whooping cough) several years ago. The cough sounds awful and like a chest cough, but as I told someone who told me I needed to see a lung man, "no, it's all in my head. When I use a lot of normal saline to stop it, it works, but what is making me cough feels like someone is pouring Elmer's glue over my trachea, and my body is apparently doing a good job of keeping it out of my lungs". My usual 50/50 ACV and honey didn't help despite the fact that I must have drank a couple of pints of. Or if it did help, I would hate to think what it would have been like without it, because there was a couple of times that I came close to dialing 911 for help. So all of you who may catch this confounded cough, don't count on the ACV/honey to do it all. If the H202 inhalation doesn't do the job alone you might want to do both if necessary. If it seems to be your head pouring nasal drainage over your trachea, try the H202 first."

The past 2 weeks it has gotten so bad that he can't eat or talk because this triggers horrible spasms. Has anyone else had this and how did you deal with it? I'm going to try vinegar but his thoat is so raw from coughing that I'm almost afraid to try it. He needs something to soothe his thoat."

[YEA]  01/22/2009: Maria from Carrollon, TX USA writes: "I was desparate after a nagging cough kept me up most of the night and was relentless during the day. My head/neck area still hurt but at least the coughing has stopped. I took 2 cups of the concoction (1TB ACV; 1TB honey in 1 Cup of hot water). and at first it didn't do much. After my 3rd/4rth cup I realized that I had stopped coughing and that nagging tickle was no longer in my throat. My chest felt heavy before and having asthma, I was wheezing so much that i was taking my inhaler 3-4 times per day! I am hoping that this ACV trick really worked. I have also been taking a natural cough medicine which never worked before, so I'm convinced the ACV was the healer."
