"Capillaries are the smallest of a body's blood vessels, measuring 5-10 [micrometers] in diameter, which connect arterioles and venules, and enable the interchange of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and many other nutrient and waste chemical substances between blood and surrounding tissues.

When you get cold and come inside, it feels hot because your capillaries are constricting due to the overwhelming change in external temperature. The osmotic pressure is trying to increase, but the arteriole venule will not let this process to develop, and so pain and heat become evident.

The walls of capillaries are composed of only a single layer of cells, the endothelium. This layer is so thin that molecules such as oxygen, water and lipids can pass through them by diffusion and enter the tissues. Waste products such as carbon dioxide and urea can diffuse back into the blood to be carried away for removal from the body. Capillaries are so small the red blood cells need to partially fold into bullet-like shapes in order to pass through them in single file." (Wikipedia)

I am not going to continue on this treatment. I am disappointed that it didn't work since a couple others had posted positive results."

I have suffered with rosacea for almost 20 years and have several broken blood vessels across my nose and cheeks - I have had laser surgery to get rid of them, but they always come back. I was actually going to schedule another expensive laser appointment, but decided to check Earth Clinic first. I have started the Pauling Therapy and have been taking sodium ascorbate vit c and lysine for about two weeks and amazingly the diffuse redness is fading and the broken cappilaries are going away! My fiance has noticed too! I am just thrilled to have found this treatment. I started by taking 4grams Vit C and 3grams Lysine once a day during the first week and the second week I started taking it in the morning and evening. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I did skim it enough to read that the recommended doseage should be broken up in divided doses throughout the day. Hope this helps many people. :)"

I've had a few broken capillaries since childhood - around the nose from excessive nose blowing due to hay fever, a small one under an eye, and one on a finger. For about 2 years I was taking 1-2 grams of vitamin C per day as a general health booster and one standard lysine pill (can't remember the dose) per day to prevent cold sores. I didn't notice any change in the broken capillaries. My doses were a lot lower than yours, but I took them for such a long time that you'd think there'd be some improvement. Oddly, the broken capillary on my finger disappeared spontaneously a few years after that. Lysine and vitamin C are both cheap though, so it's worth a shot. But if you try it, I'd recommend taking the huge doses described."

Hello Jay,

I looked up Linus Pauling by searching for Linus Pauling Institute and found that the recommended dosage for cardiovascular health was 3-6 grams of each daily but I usually take 8 grams of each daily for colds, flu, herpes simplex without any adverse reactions. Linus Pauling's theory is that cardiovascular problems are caused by a deficiency of vitamin C which is necessary for building collagen. Vitamin C (specifically ascorbic acid) works as an enzyme to convert proline and lysine to hydroxyproline and hydroxylsine which are building blocks of collagen. You will find much interesting information on studies that proved his theory, and other studies that found men who were low on vitamin C had many more heart problems (including infarcts) and that many patients with chronic heart disease and atherosclerosis regained normal cardiac function with his therapy. Two other vitamins (E & A) were also recommended for cardiac health. Other studies proving his therapy cleared the arteries in a few months time are discussed. The fact that orthodox medicine (pharmaceuticals, hospitals, AMA have managed to keep this from being widely circulated, IMHO it probably works so well that the entire medical field would have suffered economic distress due to a drastic decrease in patients having CAB's and other surgeries and expensive procedures related to heart disease.

In view of current reports of everyone being low on magnesium and knowing that magnesium has a lot to do with heart rhythm and blood pressure, a good magnesium supplement probably is in order also

Now I have a question for you. Can you give me your reference to lysine causing liver damage because the only thing I could find is that both C & lysine are known to be safe at least up to 4 grams each per day and 2 others that said no adverse reactions to lysine are known and lysine reactions are not very well reported. My personal experience is that both are safe up to 8 grams of each per day. You will find that most literature states that GI irritation occurs above l0 grams of Vit. C per day orally but much larger dosages have been given IV without adverse reactions . "


04/08/2009: Jay from Selangor, Malaysia replies: "Thanks so much for doing the research for me...from what i search in the net, it says damage liver and kidney if taken in high dosages and said that 1g a day is the proper dosage..so i wasnt sure whether taking 3g is safe. Thanks for enlightening that 3 g is still safe. I will continue with my 3g L-lysine , 4 g Vit C a day regime then. However i will be glad if you could point to me which website your were getting these helpful info..it will be great help...thanks"


[SIDE EFFECTS]  05/05/2009: Jay from Selangor, Malaysia replies: "After taking 3 g of L-Lysine and 4g of vit C a day for consecutively 5 days, my bladder is painful when urinating. Then I stopped for 2 weeks, the pain stops. I continued taking the same dosage again and on 7th day, i got the same pain again...is this a side effect? I think this will lead me to develop kidney stones as mentioned in some website."

Recently I read that broken capillaries anywhere on the body could be a sign of heart disease as they show that smaller capillaries in the body are under stress and possibly blocked with plaque. Since I have a family history of heart disease (mother, grandmother, grandfather and two great aunts) I started taking 6 grams of vitamin c and 3 grams of lysine daily. This is the basic Pauling protocol for the prevention of arteriosclerosis. It has been three weeks since I started taking this and the thread veins on my face and down near my ankles have nearly disappeared. Also my feet are warmer. Both of these supplements can be bought cheaply in bulk powder form, so for anyone who has a family history of heart disease or broken capillaries this may well be worth trying. For the record, I have taken large doses of vitamin c, complete with biovflavanoids and rutin, for years. The vitamin c by itself has never helped. It was only after I added the lysine that they virtually disappeared."

I search, and get pages that have some information re the problem, the posts from other people about how the cure worked for them, but the actual amounts to take - where do I find that. For example, a cure for broken capillaries is Vit C and lysine - how much should I take of each? I see that Louise from Ocean Grove, Australia suggest amounts, but does Earth Clinic have recommendations, are all recommendations from people like Louise? Looking forward to your reply. [YEA]  09/02/2009: Lisa from Phoenix, Az writes: "i have broken capillaries on my face- i heard vitamin k cream would help, but even after 2 months constant application had no results- however when applied daily with vitamin c cream i am seeing NOTICABLE improvement in only 10 days!!! Apply vitamin c cream generously, which absorbs into skin then apply vitamin k cream thickly on top and let dry--leave on as LONG as possssible."



09/03/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "You might also want to take Vit-K and bioflavanoids internally, too, because what is happening to your face is also happening internally. I had broken capillaries on my face, too, and although I was taking 3,000mg of Vit-C daily, I saw no improvement until I added a lemon/orange peel concoction I made, but the real improvement came when I added a Vit-K supplement to my regime. Bye-bye broken capillaries! Bioflavanoids and Vit-K are also important for healthy bones and periodontal ligaments. The recipe for the Bioflavanoid Brew is as follows:

-3 or 4 organic oranges or a mix of organic oranges and lemons to equal the amount of oranges in the recipe (it is important that they be organic because you are using the peels)
-1 tablespoon sea salt or pink salt
-1/4 cup whey (not whey powder...drain a quart of plain whole-milk yogurt with active cultures to obtain whey for this recipe)
-1/2 cup filtered water or other kind of non-chlorinated water
-1/4 cup of dried sugarcane juice or honey

Proceedure: cut the fruit into quarters the long way and then cut the quarters into very thin slices the short way (a food processor works great for this...use the thinest slicing blade you have)
-Place sliced fruit into a widemouth quart canning jar and press down lightly with a wooden spoon or some other sort of non-reactive implement.
-Combine the rest of the ingredients well and pour over the fruit in the jar. The fruit/liquid needs to be at least one inch below the top of the jar.
-Cover tightly and keep at room tempurature for 3 days before transfering to the refrigerator. You read that right...this is a fermented product and needs to sit at room tempurature so that the lactic acid bacteria in the whey can grow and preserve the product*

Eat about a tablespoon full per day. I fish it out of the liquid with a fork. It has a unique flavor...bitter but still kind of sweet/sour/ salty. It is something of an aquiried taste, but it works wonders and is much cheaper and more effective than bioflavanoid capsules. It also has the benefit of being a live-food/raw-food product and is also very good for the digestion because of the lacto-bacteria from the whey.

*If the product developes a little bit of white mold, just remove the mold with the tip of a spoon.

p.s. I don't remember where I got this recipe, but I would like to give my sincere thanks to whoever invented it...hats off to you, whoever you are!"

I'm pretty new to all this so could you explain exactly how to make your whey e.g Is this just the liquis that forms in natural yoghurt and also is sugarcane juice the same as blackstrap molasses. Sorry if I sound stupid. Also, when I was looking for vitamin k supplements all I could find was vit K2. Is this the right vitamin? Thank you."


09/06/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "To obtain whey with active cultures, just buy a quart of plain, old-fashioned regular-fat yogurt with active cultures. Line a strainer with a coffee filter or paper towel or a very clean hankerchiet set it over a catch basin of some kind, like a bowl or small non-reactive pot, and fill the coffee filter-lined strainer with the yogurt. Cover the whole rig with plastic wrap and set it in the 'fridge for several hours or over-night. The whey will drain from the yogurt and collect in the catch basin. That yellowish liquid that is in the catch basin in the morning is your whey. A quart of yogurt will yield about a pint of whey, and the whey will keep for a very long time. The strained yogurt is wonderful with fruit.

Dried sugar-cane juice is not the same as molasses, but you could probably use molasses, although the taste of the finished bioflavanoid brew would be very different. I cannot give you another name for the dried cane juice because it is a brand-name, but if you put "dried sugar cane juice" into a search engine, it might give it to you. You could also use honey, but if you do use less, because honey is very sweet. I like your idea of using Black Strap Molasses, though. I thing I will give BSM a whirl the next time I make the recipe.

There are two different kinds of K2 (that I know of), one, MK-7 from a fermented soy source such as Natto, and MK-4, from animal products such as grass fed butter, fish eggs, egg yolks, etc. They are supposed to work differently. May I ask what is the source of the K2 you use? Thank you very much."

09/09/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "I looked up Vit K-2 and Vit MK-7 and they appear to be the same thing to me, except that the site I went to claims that MK-7 is more "bioavailable" than regular K-2 and that it is "derived from" natto. My question is: why bother with the extra steps of fermenting soy beans into natto and then "deriving" MK-7 from them? At nearly $40.00 a bottle for MK-7 compared to $9.00 a bottle for plain old K-2, it hardly seems a cost effective way to get Vitamin K, even if it is a little more bioavailable. Or why not just eat natto instead of buying a really expensive derivative? Boy, talk about a "value added" product! Then, too, someone who is very soy-sensative might not do well with a product "derived" from natto.

And just as a side note, be sure to take Vitamin K, in what ever form you choose to use, with some fat, because "K" is a fat-soluable vitamin."

09/16/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "I usually take one 200 mcg capsule per day, but you have to find your own correct dosage. If you have alot of spider veins, broken capillaries, easy bruising, etc, you might want to start on a higher dosage and then cut back as you get better. Or you might want to start with a small dosage and add more if you don't see any results. One of the ways the drug industry casts a bad light on vitamins and minerals in their studies is to give too small or too high a dosage and then say, "See, vits and mins either don't work or cause harm".

p.s. Vitamin E is a Vitamin K antagonist, and balances the effect of Vitamin K in the body. In other words, Vitamin K promotes blood clotting, Vitamin E inhibits blood clotting. So you have to take your Vitamin E status into account, too, and if you take Vit E, you might want to take it several hours before or after you take the Vit K.

p.p.s. Vitamin and mineral status even varies from day to day. I can tell by how I look and feel that sometimes I might need more Vitamin K or Magnesium or whatever for some reason. I have gotten to know my body and its language pretty well, and am always working to get to know it better and listen to what it is saying to me. Our bodies talk to us all the time, we just have to learn how to listen."

09/16/2009: Gean from Salina, Ks replies: "That answers my question, thank you so much. Menaquinone is MK-7 (natural), as opposed to Menatetrenone or MK-4, which is synthetic. If I may share briefly my experience with this, maybe it will help someone. Yesterday I got the natural MK-7 (menaquinone), and took 200mcg. I felt absolutely awful, horrible food cravings and groggy, unmotivated and semi-confused. Today I took half that amount, 100mcg, along with 1 tsp. high vitamin cod liver oil (I had read that the K-2 and cod oil work well together), and lo and behold, felt more wonderful than I have in a long time, full of energy, motivation, and not hungry for 7 hours after breakfast. Not real hungry then either. Very unusual for me. Obviously the synergy provided the nutrients I needed, whereas the day before it depleted me of nutrients (food cravings). I'll let you know if it helps with the bruising."

With Ted's remedy for rosacea I noticed a huge difference in the first few days and then it slowed right down. Still working but slow."


09/17/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "I can't be sure exactly how long, but its gotta be about a year now, or maybe a little longer. One thing I noticed when I started using it is that the texture of my skin became finer...by which I mean my pores got smaller, especially in the T-zone...and also firmer. Also, the crepeyness around my eyes went way down. It just seemed to improve the over-all condition of my skin in a big way. But like you said...LOTS of improvement in the very first few days to a week, but then reached a plateau. But that is to be expected, I guess, as I was about 52 when I started using it, and so I am bound to have some damage that it is too late for me to undo. Damn...mortality sure bites, doesn't it?!"

And what you write about food cravings being part of the body's language, and finding a combination (synergy) that gives you the nurtients you need, is so very, very true. And it may be a synergy that is unique to you. To me, that is why the idea that a doctor can write a "prescription" is absurd. What helped you may not help somebody else, even though the symptoms are the same, and treating someone STATISTICALLY, like doctors do, guarantees that more and more people are not really helped at all, because all the statistical way of medicine does is suppress symptoms, NOT cure disease. Biochemical individuality is real, and of the utmost importance in the treatment of disease. And yes, do let us know how it goes.

And Kathy's advice for the spider veins has reduced remaining redness drastically. A friend whom I hadn't seen for a while kept asking me if I was feeling alright cos I'm looking so pale. I still have broken veins and some redness so I know she means paler than normal. For the capillaries I had been taking Vit c 1000mg, Vit k 100mcg. Also using Vit c and K (separate products) skin cream. Then I added the flavenoid recipe and bingo within 2 weeks there was a marked improvement. Between the two regimes I can see freckles that hadn't been noticable for nearly ten years. With basic make-up I can make them disappear altogether. And also my skin has become much firmer.

So thank you too, Kathy. A big yea for your recipe."
