03/13/2012: Barb from San Jose, Ca: "I had a headache and nausea at work. A coworker (who used to work in a chiropractor's office) gave me a massage. He said I had a dowager's hump- probably due to my being hunched over while working on my computer. I can feel the hump and was wondering how if there was a natural remedy to get rid of it.
I am going to be taking vitamin D3 daily and add calcium and magnesium as well. I had been diagnosed with osteopenia a couple of years ago. But my doctor never really explained anything about it to me. I just had an annual exam and she just reviewed my lab results and that's it. I need to find a new doctor, but in the mean time I want to get rid of this hump at the base of my neck.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

03/14/2012: Carly from Seattle, Wa - Usa replies: "Humped, hunched over upper backs tend to be inherited in my family. I also have slight scoliosis of my upper spine which doesn't help matters much.
Below are the things that I have found to be of help for it, and for the spine in general.
Things to research using:
- 1) Inversion table
- 2) Foam roller
- Both are great for stretching out the spine.
- 3) Orthotic inserts for your shoes.
- RE: Back brace. I asked my Dr. if a back brace might be of help when they found the scoliosis, but he said at *my* age it would not. sigh. Braces are for the younger crowd. ;)
- Supplements to Research:
- 1) Magnesium Citrate 400 mg day
- 2) Boron 3 to 6 mg a day
- 3) D3 - 5,000 iu minimum a day
- 4) Zinc - 15mg day
- 5) Calcium - not daily, perhaps every other day at 600 mg. This is only if you do not eat vegetables or dairy. If you eat a lot of either, no calcium supplement. See Teds thoughts on Calcium on Earth Clinic. Supplements are usually NOT needed.
- 6) Vitamin C - 1,000mg x 4 a day or to bowel tolerance (as with Magnesium, you WILL know if you have had too much! Start with less, work up to more).
I am 51 now, and my hump doesn't seem to have progressed in the past decade, it is holding at a slight outward curve.
When I see elderly women very hunched over, it just looks so painful. Julia Child had a pronounced back hump also. Running off subject here, so will close by saying....

Adelle Davis ascribed bent over posture in older people caused by b12 deficiencies. Happens to vegetarians as they don't eat red meat. 03/21/2012: Rob from Manhattan, Ny replies: "Similarily I suffer from poor posture from over 20 years of hunched over computer work. The solution is unfortunately not a quick fix but steps can be taken to improve the condition over time with lifestyle changes. In addition to the above recommendations I would add yoga to your weekly practice.. If you can't find a local class there are online programs and videos to help you, but a skilled yoga practitioner could give you some corrective poses. (be cautious however as many yoga poses are in fact too extreme & unnecessary) Simply placing a yoga mat near your work area (I work out of home) and taking frequent breaks by just lying on your back and doing some simple exercises and breathing can help break your routine of hunching over at the computer. Making something routine is key in correcting this... I purchased a simple chin up bar... Placing near or on the bathroom door.. And ever time I use the bathroom I give myself a body stretch... Not necessary to do a chinup but just to grab onto it and release my weight enough to stretch my spine.. In addition to the above nutrition tips I would add Natto.. (if you can enjoy its unusual consitency) In Japan it is often eaten for breakfast... (I have it with eggs when I eat them)..

03/31/2010: Phil from Dearing, Ga replies: "Hello Oly, You stated you have seen chiropractors for your condition. Well in my opinion there is only one type of chiropractor that actually works... The practice you will be looking for is called the GONSTEAD.
Ask your chiropractor what method he or she uses. Find one that does the Gonstead method. The older the chiropractor usally the better.
You can research it yourself using Google, But there is a big difference in the Gonstead method and other chiropractor treatments. If a Gonstead practicing chiropractor can't fix you, then it may be DDD.
There is also some stuff on here already under the Ailments section but one thing that comes to mind is magnesium. I believe Ted, somewhere on here recommended magnesium for back related issues. The key in the magnesium seems to be its ability to make the muscles stregthen add hold the bones in thier proper places.
Stretches and stregthen the Ab muscle will also help.
My chiropractor told me the Key to a healthy back, Is a strong core ( Midsection of a person )

I hope you DO NOT have degenerative disc disease, because my mother had sciatica problems and found out she had DDD. She had to have surgery and has never fully recovered. Her bones never fused back together. It has been two years now."

My father always believed in heat, But again My chiropractor always told me to never use HEAT. Heat can temporally paralyze you. Make your condition worse... You want to Ice for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off, repeated for maybe say an hour."

In the book he talks about how when you finally call the bluff of a health issue and ignore it, it moves to symptoms in another part of the body.... how weird!

05/01/2013: Joy from Battleground , Wash replies: "Yes, I have had shingles at least 5 times, and one episode set off the nerves on my left rib and couldn't wear anything tight on it for over two years. As I wrote in my post... Pick your illness... to help others because John Sarno called his illness bluff and overcame by perseverance and study.
I have found my answers and overcome all but two huge liver cysts (autoimmune), the teeth need made NEW. I read a LOT. 5-8 hours a day and I don't feel very intelligent but I am determined. Nerve pain is excruciating...
I encourage you to read the work of Dr. Batmanghelidj. Watercure.com... and Carolyn Dean, the miracle of magnesium, and read about coconut oil, since I have come to believe it heals the body teeth to rectum.... Get a good multi mineral and milti vitamin and some omegas and GO SLOW VERY SLOW. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN AGONY. You can overcome too. I found one of my answers after much search and trial on 4-27-13.. YAY :)
The body will heal given the right ingredients at the right time and I am proof.
- 1-2 cups water 1/2 hour before food
- Eat normal meal with coconut oil in food with supplements of magnesium citrate plus multi mineral and mutli vitamins and omegas and folic acid, betafood, sea salt in diet every meal
- 1-2 cups water 1/2 hour before next meal,
- Eat normal with magnesium citrate and multi mineral and betafood, coffee is a weakness so I drink some water between meals
- 1-2 cups water 1/2 hour before next meal
- Eat normal with betafood, some coffee
I also add yogurt, cranberry and garlic for intestinal health... May your JOY BE FULL"

I used to wonder if I had imposed my illness on me somehow - subconsiously, or otherwise; I think it's one of the phases some people with a serious health problem go through. As much as I would love to get rid of my condition, which is atypical trigeminal neuralgia (constant facial pain), or trade it off for more "smaller" issues, I find that there is little I can do. Ignoring the disease is impossible, if there is pain as a constant reminder. So even when people tell me not to think about the pain and I'll be okay, they don't know what they're talking about. Nerves are a part of the autonomous nerve system -- no matter how hard I try, wish or pray or try to ignore them -- I cannot stop them from hurting. Maybe I just did a bad job picking my illness:)"
05/01/2013: Kathy from the USA replies: "Oldriska--I don't know if this will help but pain comes from inflammation. I had been informed over twenty years ago that magnesium provides some protection against the stimulating effects of hidden sources of MSG, which has permeated our food supply. I've had multiple injuries but have not had the pain I used to have before I started taking it every day. I thought eating more spinach was giving me the calcium I needed after a hysterectomy. Prior to that I had been eating spinach to keep my eyes from drying out so I could tolerate contacts. Long story shortened: spinach and chocolate contain oxalic acid that prevents the absorption of magnesium that is required so calcium can do its job. Believe me I learned the hard way due to the grinding bone-on-bone pain after neck and back injuries."
05/01/2013: Kathy from the USA replies: "Hello again Oldriska--I had to stop posting earlier and couldn't finish... I sent it without proof reading. You might want to try taking 1/4-1/2 tsp of turmeric in warm water when you are in pain. Hidden sources of manufactured glutamic acid (MSG) are hard to stay away from. "MSG" is a nerve stimulant. Turmeric and ginger reduce inflammation. I use them both on my vegetables and eggs. Just make sure there are no fillers in the ingredients. Beware of the flowing/anti-caking agent in your salt. Try using "Real Salt"."

05/04/2013: Joy from Battleground, Wash replies: "AF betafood is a lot of things in one supplement, for gallbladder support. Root of beet, carrot, oat flour , dried beet leaf, defatted wheat germ, cal mag bovine liver nutritional yeast bovine kidney alfalfa flour ect.. Etc.. Worth the big expense if your digestion is faulty. I took ten a day for a month a felt much better able to digest my food.
One thing Dr. Batman didn't go into a lot of detail about that I was missing was that magnesium in a raito of 1 cal 1 mag is best because our food is high calcium and that also affects our bodies water systems.
I'm not losing any weight but using coconut oil and was using the meat trying to get digestive tract free of yeast and trying to heal liver cysts. One problem at a time.... Hope you find yourself feeling better and eating more variety."

I find this very interesting after years of knocking out health issues and having a new one crop up out of nowhere.
It feels like I am always having to do research to find new answers. Maybe I'll get one that is not so awful and just stop there..........???
How many books does it take to solve the dis-ease? I have a full library now and those are the best of the best of the best after years of research. I am thankful not to have the stomach aches, the ear aches, the knee problems, the hip pain, (my sockets are too big for the balls on my legs to stay in )the blurry vision ( explained to me that I was allergic and my eyes were shedding cells blurring my sight), the dandruff that would fall off and leave an open wound under it, that scabbed over. The depression... The shoulder, neck, and back pain... The ringing in my ears.... The allergy to my hormones each month producing the lump under my arm, the fear and panics, and body tremors, wrist problems, nightmares for years on end, snoring. (we are talking BUZZ SAW, the kids thought it was their dad) LOL :- () Oh and the burps and gas and inability to digest and eliminate food. Liver cysts, pelvic prolapse and top that all off with the dreaded CANDIDA. Head trauma, short and long term memory loss, ADHD and dyslexia..... I was the healthiest sick person at the doctors office.
This doesn't include all the drama at the dentist.
A chiropractor treated me for LYME disease with frequencies. He said I had the worst case they had ever seen and were surprised that I had walked in. It felt that way to me. I didn't know I had it. He charged me very little.
Whitmire Chiropractic, Vanc. Wash. He is the only person who has this treatment, I asked.
He did spinal adjustments and treated some allergies with frequencies... Seemed to help a lot. He also uses a light to desensitize.
My husband loves me but thinks I am a gullible NUT JOB. I just want to be well and done with it.
Now pelvic and hormone and liver and thyroid and teeth.... LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS OH MY! Where does it end..... The book is interesting. I bought the second one.... The divided mind!

( 1st let me tell you about him, he is old school, he is 75 yrs young...lol) Any way he took ex-rays, on my lower back an legs an show me on my legs, he put a ruler on the ex-rays an showed me that one leg was almost 1/4 inch shorter than the other, an wrote a script to go to the leather shop an make me a lift out of leather. (about the middle of the foot to the heal, an slipped in under my shoe liner) Well that day I ask him, how come other doc's did not know this an he said......O Mitch they did know, that it would put them out of business, he said that the doc would send you home, WITH DRUGS, an come back next week, for a check up. (PAID HIM TWICE). Also he said that the Chiropractor would like me to keep coming back all the time so they could make alot of money. So then I ask him how is it that one leg is shorter than the other, an he told me that most people have that problem, cause as you are growing, you most of the time carry everything on one side. (exsample If you are RIGHT HANDED that the right leg would be shorter.......now this made sense to me cause I am LEFT HANDED an my left leg WAS shorter than the other. PRETTY SMART HUH well it made sense to me. Needless to say my back was much better, an has been for yrs, hardly ever any pain unless I over do it. An o did i tell you that I was in terrible pain for 11 yrs, an I seen all kind of doctors, also 4 chiroprators. My doc told me no offence to you but I would just like to see you only twice a year for your check ups. Great doctor huh! Well I hope this info my help some one out, it worked for me. I really like this site."
EC: I heard the same thing from my friend, an Osteopath in NYC. The heel lift apparently helps right away!
11/22/2011: Jasonmchicago from Chicago, Il Usa replies: "My body has been totally out of balance. I went to a Neuromuscular Osteopath and they noticed my hips were off... Which I knew but never mentioned anything about leg length. I had broken my leg over a decade ago and I kept saying that my legs don't feel the same size throughout the years. I thought it was all in my head and becuase I didn't exercise or do the right PT to heal the muscles/liagments/tendons. I told people here and there but never go a real "test" to what was going on. Anyway I had lower back pain for years, couldn't sleep well, and had knee pain. I just felt like a marionette doll!!! Shoulder pain, neck pain, back pain, facial pain, everything was out of whack.
Anyway I read Earthclinic all the time and said maybe it is REAL. I saw the heel lift comment and ordered one immediately. Actually I ordered two version waiting to get them in the mail. Then I thought I'd just use what I have around the house. So I got a couple of kitchen sponges put them in my shoes and BOOM! By the next days things settled down a little. I cannot wait until I get my heel lifts.... I think they will really help realign things along with yoga, etc. Geez!!!! To think that ALL THESE years I had been walking weird and things were so bad for no reason.

QUESTION: What is the best doctor to get an official diagnosis so I know how many mm my legs are off and that can help me monitor the realignment of things? Osteopath? Chiro? MD? I hate the endless search for "specialist" who don't know much about anything! :)

Under Ayurveda treatment, she had recovered about 60%, when unfortunately, she took a homeopathy medicine called symphytum for about 10 days. An area on her spine became inflamed and is now causing her burning, pricking pain. She also experiences shooting pain down her legs, now and then. Apart from the spine, the buring sensation is felt also in the middle of her palms and soles. She is under allopathic treatment, now. The MRI shows compression of nerve due to the scoliosis and the slipped disc. She has just started the allopathy tablets now and though there is some relief, she is still in pain. I decided to try a while ago so I bought myself a little, inexpensive child's hoop but no way I was able to do anything with it except pick it up from the ground, try again, let it fall and pick it up again. Then I read that hula hoops for adults have to be a lot bigger and heavier so I ordered one from Amazon, a padded one and yes... Now I can hoop! Like most people I hoop better to one side than to the other but I learnt quite easily. To avoid bruising I bought myself a sweat band you tie around your waist and have therefore had hardly any bruising at all. The interesting thing is that since I have been doing it (and I haven't had a lot of time) my lower back pain seems to be a lot better. My reason for buying it was actually to get a slimmer waist but if it helps against back pain all the better. Anybody have any experience with this? Not easy to find the right hoop though as they are not sold in the shops here so you can't try them out. I would like to try doing some fun tricks but I am under the impression that this fitness hoop are not the right ones. Lots of videos online if you want to learn..."

My lower back has not been the same for 7 years, I have disc problems, etc. I read about Hyaluronic Acid and I had to try it. I ordered it from Vitacost. It has been a Godsend. I thought I was going to have to have surgery on my back, as I have been in that much pain. I have been to Orthopedic Physicians and given pain medication, which I do not like to take, next step was to have injections, and if that didn't work, surgery. 07/13/2013: Jenny from Brisbane, Australia: "To the lady with disc degeneration and others considering surgery. Try hydrotherapy and all conservative methods as if you have surgery there will be other side effects. I had a disc bulge at L4/5 and a cyst grew in the fluid that accumulated which grew onto my nerve roots which resulted in excruciating pain down the right side of my body.
My GP said the it would be a relatively minor operation to remove the cyst and referred me to a surgeon. By the time I went to see the surgeon I had to go in by ambulance on a stretcher as walking and sitting were too painful.
I told the surgeon to just remove the cyst but he said it would come back and scared me into doing a more major operation, I. E. removal of the discs and replacement with a cage. My facet joints above and below the implant are now deteriorating because of the implant - this is proven by the before and after MRI. I believe his motivation was not my future welfare but money, the major operation being much more expensive. There are not many Drs who take the hypocratic oath any more and mean it - I. E. first do no harm... its big business.
I am now going to try strenghten the muscles in my back by doing specific exercises and do water walking in a heated pool. As well as this I will try ACV and take Boron and anything else that has worked for other people because I have now realised I must take responsbility for my own health and not rely on a Dr to do the right thing.
Surgery should be a last resort. I also have a failed left total knee replacement - doesn't bend properly because the surgeon cut through my quadriceps muscle and I couldn't do the physio afterwards due to the pain of the severed muscle.
I have only had the two surgeries at age 65, both in the last 7 years and both with problems. I will never go under the knife again if I can help it.
Try everything else, and as a very last resort only, consider surgery, and if you do so find a surgeon who treats the patient, not his bank balance.
Inversion Table Therapy
[YEA] 09/07/2010: Deirdre from Earth Clinic: "Ok, I've written on Earth Clinic before about the absolute wonders of an inversion table for neck and shoulder pain. Now I am here to tell you it's my #1 remedy to also get rid of low back pain.
I started to have chronic low back pain in August, which appeared to get worse with each new day. We had folded up the inversion table in the guest room a while back and I had basically forgotten about it for a number of months. I tried a number of remedies listed on the site, as well as massage and acupuncture. Nothing helped! Finally I remembered our inversion board (d'uh!) and took it out. I hung upside for about 3 minutes and 12 hours later, about 7 minutes more. The second time my back "popped" in 3 places as soon as I went to 90 degrees. The next day, I kid you not, my excruciating back pain was gone, my posture much improved, and my brain clearer & sharper than ever. I can't believe it was this easy. Chronic back pain gone in 10 minutes. I continue to hang upside at least once a day on the inversion board for 3 - 10 minutes and... yippee! no back pain. 09/08/2010: Phil from Dearing, Ga/usa replies: "Hi Deirdre. What type of inversion board do you have? I have read reviews on the net and alot of people complain and say the straps really hurt thier ankles. Does your hurt your ankles? It is my understanding that you strap the straps around your ankles and hang upside down. I know that my chiropractor, who is now deceased used to joke with me and tell me not to grab certain handles on his table or it would turn me upside down and do all kinds of wonderful. So I believe the inversion would be great, just questions about the ankles."

I have the Ironman 1000. It doesn't use straps, it uses a spring-loaded ankle locking system. The trick is to wear sneakers or even timberland boots if the clamps hurt your ankles. I usually go barefoot without any issues as my ankle are fairly flexible, but I wouldn't suggest that for other people starting off. I also suggest you start slowly and not go into full inversion right away as there's a lot of pressure that builds up in the head. A friend of my husband's, a very healthy and flexible guy, pulled a hamstring the first time he tried it at our house when he was visiting! So yep, go slowly. Please let me know if you try it!"
09/09/2010: Lisa from Lafayette, La replies: "Just passing on something that my chiropractor told me last week. I told him I was doing the inversion table for neck pain. He told me I didn't need it, because it really only helps lower back pain. He also warned me that head pressure due to the inversion can cause strokes, high blood pressure, etc. He said, "I won't tell you NOT to do it, but I will warn you, don't invert more than 30 degrees. This is plenty for anyone and will avoid the hbp feeling in the head." Something to keep in mind."

(it was so easy to do! ) anyway, after having a bad flare up of my upper back I went back to using it, and it really is amazing how good it will make your back feel. [NAY] 12/07/2012: Joann from Tallahassee, Fl. replies: "Inverson table, I have chronic back pain. I bought this table and was using it for the pain. One day after using it for 3 or 4 min. I got a terrible headache, this went on for a week or so. My Dr. was doing routine exams and found I had a brain anurisum, I went to a Dr for that it was at level 3. At that time I did nothing, 8 months later he re-checked and it had gone to 9. At this level I was in the danger zone so I had to have it coiled. I do not suggest this table for anyone, I know that is what did the damage and I was thinking it was sinus. Had my Dr. not caught it and sent me to have it checked out I would most likely not be here today."
[YEA] 05/25/2012: Swhit from Los Angeles, Ca, Usa: "I have suffered from a bad back for at least 20 yrs. I have tried everything and not until recently has anything worked as well as Magnesium Oil. You spray it on you, anywhere you like, not even the hurting parts and instantly works. If you take Calcium you have to take Magnesium as one contracts and the other expands (forget which is which) but without the other you can feel pain, headaches etc. , They put Calcium in everything these days, OJ, Milk, etc. , so it is important to take either topically or orally extra Magnesium."
