What Causes Back Pain?
Back or lower back pain is a common affliction affecting both men and women, and can have a number of different origins and hurt in different ways: muscles, bones, and joints are commonly afflicted and back pain can spread into the arms, hands, and legs. Sometimes back pain can cause weakness, numbness, or tingling. That being said, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain without an invasive approach, as there are so many different tissues of the back, and 98% of back pain patients are diagnosed with nonspecific back pain.
The onset of back pain can be sudden and pass within days to weeks; but chronic back pain lasting for more than 12 weeks can be debilitating, and medication can be habit-forming and still not treat the issue. Severe back pain accompanied by other illness, such as fever or sudden weight-loss, may be indicative of another medical condition.

10/24/2011: Cateye from Melbourne, Vic., Australia: "My mother, aunt, great-aunt, sister and I have this issue. My mother calls it her witches hump.
I thought I was stuck with it, I always stood and sat with my neck jutting forward as if unable to straighten. It looked gross, 'slovenly' in photos.
I suspect it is a physiological problem caused by injury, fluoride/excess calcium-on-a-genetic-pattern combo and other damage compounded by psychology.
For the last ten years I've been trying to manage and cure my back pain, and I've recently made huge *HUGE* leaps towards cure. I've never felt so strong or so pain-free (and mentally calm) as the last six months or so since I had my atlas aligned. I wrote the speil under the 'scoliosis' heading too, because it seems to have corrected the twist between my shoulders.
But the hump has disappeared altogether. I'm 38 and really thought I'd turn in to the classic, brittle, wisp of a British Lady Crone figure by 55-60yrs... And was well on the way. Now I see myself as a staunch old lady with an imposing presence. : )
The most dramatic change was having my atlas aligned. SUCH a dramatic thing I can't stress it enough. The other is to find a genuine 'Rolfer', also known as 'structural integration' practioner, who essentially looks at where your body is going wrong and irons out the issues over ten sessions. I heard it was called 'The Rolls Royce of Massage' before I'd tried it, and I certainly agree now. I can't go back to budget massage. Too annoying realising these people don't know what they're doing and you're paying them to do it.
Anyhoo, my two cents. Atlas alignment is brilliant. So is Rolfing.

- Water soaks in Epsom salt and drinking 16 oz. water and eating an apple with salt on it in the tub. Stay in tub as long as you can.
- Take mineral and vitamin supplements, drink glass of water half an hour before any eating.
- Use an inversion table to open the spine up. Don't go all the way back, just till you feel the pull on the spine
- Ice packs on the spine 10 minutes then heat 30 minutes... Repeat a few times."

Back Pain Remedies During Pregnancy
[YEA] 11/06/2007: Amanda from Philadelphia, PA: "I'm in my 9th month of pregnancy and my baby is sitting on my sciatica nerve. I can barely walk somedays but this helps alot! I take a pretty hot bath with Epsom Salt, A bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil in the bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. It helps alleviate the pain a great deal. You can also get on your hands and knees (all fours) and tilt your pelvis and this relieves pressure. I hope this helps."Replies

[YEA] 06/16/2009: Redou from New Orleans, Louisiana: "I'm not a doctor, THIS IS NOT MEDICAL ADVICE, I'm only telling you what happened to me. Consult you doctor before you try anything. If you get hurt, don't waste your time suing me, you won't get much.
This post will probably be too long for most readers, but if you have LOWER BACK PAIN, I want you to know that I understand what you're going through.
I fixed my LOWER BACK PAIN with a BALL POINT PEN - no, I didn't write a check. First some background and then I'll get to the point. I had back pain for 28 years - from age 17 to age 45. I'm 53 now and except for a couple of 'twinges' NO PAIN IN 8 YEARS. I spent an average of 3 days a month on my back. I had pain 75% of the time. I used to pee in a jar because it hurt too bad to get up and go to the bathroom.
My wife had to put on my shoes and tie them for me. To pick up something, I had to get down, slowly, on my knees and only if it wasn't heavy. I used to pay $80 for a hotel room just to get out of the car. I never slept in the hotel bed. I slept on the hard floor.
I couldn't do a lot of things like camping or hiking or dancing. I thought of myself as a cripple. I lived in fear of that pain, like a knife in my lower back, making me go to the ground. I never knew when it was going to hit.
I went to doctors and chiropractors and spent a lot of money. Had a lot of X-Rays done. I'll probably die of cancer. I was told that: - one leg was longer than the other (chiropractor) - I needed special shoes or lifts in my shoes (chiropractor) - I had a herniated disc (doctor) - I had soft tissue damage (doctor) - I had cracked vertebrae (doctor) - I needed surgery (at least 3 doctors)
- heating pads (temporary relief)
- popping my own back (sometimes temporary relief, sometimes made it worse)
- bed rest - or on the floor rest (sometimes back to work the next day, sometimes 3 days to a week on my back)
- stretching exercizes prescribed by doctors (useless)
- very hot baths (temporary relief often followed by worse pain)
- TENS unit - electric stimulation - I bought one (temporary relief)
- heat, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)followed with 'manupulation' (back popping) by chiropractors (temporary relief, usually followed by pain shortly thereafter or the next day
- hard mattresses, soft mattresses, hard chairs, soft chairs (hard chairs worked better for me)
I never ate any pills except over-the-counter muscle relaxors. I won't eat a pain pill. Too easy to get addicted.
Ok. I'm getting to the point:
One day I'm lying on the floor, missing work. My girlfriend is looking at the computer and trying to help me. She is reading about a home remedy for back pain. I'm telling her don't waste yourtime, go in the bedroom, there's a stack of books in there about back pain. Some by a girl named Zimmerman, if memory serves. I think it was a British physical therapist that told me about this cure, but with the pain, and not thinking clearly I really can't remember. Whoever it was, they have my eternal gratitude.
What the person on the net was recommending:
- wait until your pain gets better, don't start fixing it while you're having a lower back pain episode.
- Once your back gets back to 'normal' (for me that meant I was able to work around the pain, go to work, go somewhere)- Then
get a ball point pen.
- Drop your drawers, bend over until you just start to feel scared. (most back sufferers don't like to bend over, that's often when the pain hits you)
- Place your fingers on your thighs, flat in the front, and make a mark with the pen where your middle finger touches your thighs one mark on each leg. Don't bend below where you feel comfortable (meaning don't go below the mark)
- DON'T Wash the marks off.
- For the next week, BENDING ONLY AT THE HIPS, KEEPING YOUR
LOWER BACK STRAIGHT - TOUCH THOSE TWO MARKS 100 TIMES EVERY DAY.
- Don't do it all at once, ten here, twenty there, and only if you feel safe doing it.
- After a week , if you feel comfortable with it, make a mark 1/2 inch (THAT'S ONE HALF OF AN INCH) below the first marks and now
spend a week touching those new marks 100 times a day.
- You can see where this is going - All the way down to your toes.
- I took three months to do it.
- If you do it at 1/2 inch at a time it will probably take you a year, (I think the person who invented this was being overly cautious and trying to make sure no one got hurt)
Anyway, after 3 months of touching the slowly descending marks 100 times a day, I could touch my toes. Without fear. (But I would kind of work my way down each day) I had not bent over and touched my toes for 28 years. Now I could do it every day. And I still do it now. The lower back pain was (and is) GONE.
1) My theory - the reason this works - is that I had babied my back for years and the right muscles, the ones that are supposed to hold you up and aid in flexing and extending a person's back - were WEAK. I realized that all the treatments I had tried only treated the SYMPTOMS and did not solve the PROBLEM - my WEAK back. Also, I was able to function for many years with a bad back, but I believe I was using the WRONG MUSCLES. When my back was locked up, my spine was crooked, the wrong muscles were trying to do a job they were not intended for. Also, and this is important, I don't believe I had any real DAMAGE to my back, nothing broken or torn, that is why I think anyone who wants to try this should go to their doctor and make sure nothing is broken first.
I still touch my toes 100 times a day, twenty here, ten there. I keep a concrete block outside my back door and every now and then I bend down and lift it WITH MY BACK, not with my knees like the doctors say. DON'T TRY THIS YOURSELF. Now my back is strong, my muscles are flexible, and circulation in that area is good. Weak muscles are TENSE and have poor circulation. STRONG muscles are flexible and have good circulation.
Another thing I believe is that many back sufferers are stressed out people, their stress shows up in muscle tension. I don't think that is the only reason for back problems, but I believe stress is a major contributor.

I apologize but I don't have a picture of this technique. Actually, I'm not sure a picture would help because all it would be is a person bending over and straightening up -again and again.
However, it's not complicated. My back pain was concentrated in my lower back so that's the area this exercize focuses on. If you bend over, your upper body is heavy. Raising and lowering your upper body will work your lower back. When people stand, they generally have a natural curve to their lower spine.
This curve points to the front, the way they are facing. (I have seen people who have poor posture have a backwards curve to the spine). Anyway, when you bend over, your body should bend like a folding knife, two straight lines at an angle to each other, and the natural curve of your lower back should now point downward.
Your legs should be straight and, when you bend, you should feela stretching all the way down the backs of your legs. When you lower your upper body (start to bend) you should feel it pull the muscles in your lower back which was a scary feeling - at the time - for a chronic back sufferer like me. That is why you only bend over just a little bit at a time.
Do not use the middle of your back to bend and do not round your back. Keep your back straight all the way from your butt to your neck. As you lower your upper body to touch the marks on your legs, you will feel the muscles in your LOWER BACK stretch as you move downward to the marks. This means you are using only your lower back muscles to lower your entire upper body.
Then as you raise your upper body back to an upright, erect posture, you will feel the muscles in your lower back contract. If you keep your entire back straight - all the work is being done by the muscles in your lower back. This felt strange to me when I first tried it and I realized that I had been avoiding using these muscles for years. In my case, when I used to have back problems, these muscles were constantly tense and I used the muscles in my middle back or sides to bend - if I did any bending at all.
The 'ball point pen method' is pretty much exactly what the doctors tell you not to do when they advise 'pick up something by bending your knees and not your knees - not your back'. Well, I agree with them that if you are picking up something really heavy then you don't want to overload your back but, excuse me, your upper body is definately supposed to be lifted by healthy strong and flexible lower back muscles.
One more way of looking at the exercize is this: Think of the natural curve of your lower back pointing downward as
you bend. You will feel this curve increase as you raise your upper body. You will feel this curve flatten as you lower your upper body. You will feel your lower back muscles expand and contract. You should not feel the muscles in your middle or upper back doing anything.

That works, but is not what he's talking about I think. YES your back muscles would so get stronger doing this - if you do as he said, just a little bit a time, small measurements in high quantity, a very good and conscious way to build the 'erector spinae' muscles. It's similar to an exercise called "Good Mornings" which you can do without weights (until you're strong enough to.)"

Chronic Back Pain Remedies
04/02/2013: Maggie from Calgary, Alberta, Canada: "Hi. My husband has been suffering chronic back pain for over a year and a half. He is in pain every single day and has to stop and rest every day when we walk the dog. Sometimes he is walking and stoops over to try and minimize the pain. When he stands too long in the kitchen he has to go sit down and rest. The closest description I have been able to get from him through reading types of pain is sciatica. He injured his back at work a year and a half ago and has not had a day without pain since. He refuses to go and see a doctor so I try what I can but am not sure if any supplements can help what he has. Not sure if it has anything to do with foods he eats. He does not sleep well, is tired all the time and usually needs a restful period every afternoon. I do not know what type of injury he has without a proper diagnosis. He also suffers from excess mucus after eating which I doubt has anything to do with his back pain. He actually had that problem before the injury. I have tried him on several things but he gets impatient if he does not experience immediate relief. The best he feels is if he has a bath with epsom salts and then rests on the bed. I have recently added magnesium citrate pills at doses of 500 mg but as yet he has not seen any improvement. I also increased his vitamin D since he has several symptoms of vitamin D deficiency, he has dark skin, suffers SAD in the winter time. Are any of these things related? Is there anything else I can do to help without a doctor or chiropractor's visit? I tried to get him to do the castor oil packs but he had no patience with that. I tried candied ginger slices which he tried for 1-2 days and then found them useless. Like I said, if he doesn't feel immediate relief it is hard to try natural remedies with him. However, there was a recent article by Dr. Mercola (http://fitness.mercola.com/sites/fitness/archive/2013/03/29/back-pain-treatment.aspx) that might give you some ideas. The comments at the end (just click on it it takes awhile to load) are usually very good. People offer suggestions on what worked for their particular back problem.
For temporary relief, you may want to look into an infrared heating pad. I can't list any brand names (although a popular one - used with horses as well as humans - begins with T and ends with X) but you can call Shoppers Drug Mart Home Health and they should be able to discuss various types with you.

04/03/2013: Timh from Louisville, Ky, Usa replies: "Maggie: You should try some kind of Back Brace so that one area of injury isn't stressed so badly. Medical supply stores like Dr Leonard's have several kinds. I once used a leather weight lifters belt on my lower back with very good results. Magnet therapy will help; but you will need a rather strong magnet like what is used in a music speaker to penetrate deep. Someone posted good results from the light infrared or fared therapy purchased for private use (as opposed to the very high prices chiropractors charge). Any kind of massage therapy should also help."

Also take a bath and the water will trick the body into believing the pain is coming from a larger area and diminish the signals of pain. Drink water and eat a proper dose of salt to keep the water in your cells, and take a good multi mineral supplement to get rehydrated. It helps to cushion your joints.
MAKE CHANGES SLOWLY, to prevent distress to your system
Magnesium is the mineral for muscle and an epson salt soak in the foot bath or tub does wonders for pain and helps regulate heart muscle."
04/04/2013: Kathy from the USA replies: "Sometimes, taking the time to have a good bowel movement helps my lower back pain and sciatica. Taking 1/2 tsp of dry mustard in 1/2 C cool water on an empty stomach first thing in the morning before breakfast helped me so much I sometimes took it a couple hours after dinner, before I went to bed until I resumed more regularity. I had a spine/back injury about five decades ago. Could be why both of my babies were breech? Only one was caesarean. Just trying to offer another possibility due to my experience. Turmeric in some warm water reduces inflammation. Ginger reduces inflammation too and destroys salmonella. I sprinkle both on my eggs and vegetables with sea salt. The commercial salt that is in everything contains a flowing/anti-caking agent that causes inflammation and is the culprit for many ailments and I know for a fact the severe sciatica I used to have was caused by this."

04/05/2013: Kathy from the USA replies: "Hi Maggie, Neglected to address the mucous issue. What happened to me is I discovered my bowels had telescoped inside themselves. This is called intussusception and can occur from the stomach to the rectum. I believe this is what constipation really is. When this happens it is my opinion that impacted stool can begin to ferment if it is not evacuated and can become malignant. If I get adequate Vit A mucous seems to be produced in the colon attempting to remove impacted stool. I had been so impacted I vomited because my food could not be digested---there was no room for it to move through. I was so full of this matter it was difficult to keep my weight down
It was reported to me that my gradmother died from colon cancer. I was told she had some of her colon removed, had a colostomy then went back for more surgery to reattach the colon that has been left. Twenty-twenty hindsight suggests to me that intussusception had been her problem but this was back in the 50's and maybe not known how to treat. I do not want to live the reat of my life with a colostomy.
I don't know if it is too late for me to correct because I did have cancer dianosed in 1989. I can massage my abdomen and feel stool move and sometimes I feel a "squishing" and if you look up intussusception online you can pull up a picture of what is happening. Some will say it's hereditary but I believe eating habits are hereditary. I'm trying to use food as my medicine instead of pleasure. Even though our food is being engineered to last longer and the longer you cook it, it creates more MSG I still feel it makes it easier to assimilate. You just have to weigh the pros and cons for yourself and reduce portions. I hope this has offered some help and not caused more confusion. It's difficult for me to sit here long periods and sometimes I lose my train of thought.

04/06/2013: Ky Mama from Clinton, Ky replies: "Hi! I am so sorry about his pain. I have had trouble with sciatica on and off over the years. One thing that is easy to do and works well is Peppermint Essential Oil. I get organic since peppermint may be heavily sprayed. I was in a car for 13 hours today and my sciatica flared up. I rubbed peppermint oil onto my hand and over my lower back. (I think the inflammation there presses on the nerves causing the pain down my legs. ) It wasn't long before I was feeling better.
Plenty of water (not city water) is good for everything, including inflammation. Blackstrap molasses is also high in lots of things that may also be helpful. One Tablespoon a day, or when symptoms are bad is helpful. It can be taken straight or in warm milk.

I posted information here on Earth Clinic about Pai-da (pat/slap) and La-jin (stretch tendons) which is Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM) that has been forgotten about even by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners. Lajin is a simple stretch that you do laying down on a bench or two chairs side by side. It is especially good for lower back and knee pain as the person doing the stretch will feel some relief from pain after just 5 minutes of stretching.
