[YEA] 05/23/2009: Seven from Neosho, Missouri, USA writes: "I have adult acne (I'm 34f) due to hormonal imbalance and problems with my digestion. They tend to bother me a great deal causing me to pick at them and otherwise make them worse. I tried a lot of different expensive commercial products without success. The ingredients usually burned and inflamed my skin and didn't do anything for the acne.
Finally I came across an "acne cure" that people were paying up to sixty-dollars per ounce on the Internet. I found out that it was simply Chamomile lotion and witch hazel and I already had that in my medicine cabinet. I tried it out and it works great.
I wash my face good in the evening, use witch hazel as a toner then apply the Chamomile lotion. (I am going to see if ACV works better then Witch Hazel after reading about it here on this site.) The Chamomile dries up the acne usually overnight and has always made it better including really deep hard nodule type of acne.
Chamomile lotion doesn't prevent or otherwise cure acne but it does dry up outbreaks extremely rapidly, keeps the acne from itching and being irritated and doesn't burn, sting or otherwise have side effects that I have experienced. I wish I had known about this as a teen."

[YEA] 11/07/2011: Cb from S, Sc writes: "I have started using Coconut oil for acne and I have always had OILY skin.... I was very reluctant to try it but had several (non-acne) spots I wanted to see what the coconut oil would do for my skin after looking up effects of coconut oil. I slowly expanded the areas I treated with coconut oil and eventually (after about a week) I was using it on my entire face after I washed it. I now use it every morning and night after I wash my face and I have NOT had any acne since I started using it. I did have several areas that seemed to be like clogged pores around my nose but they never got real red like before I used coconut oil taking at least 7-10 days to get rid of instead I was able to squeeze the stuff out of the pores very easily (not to mention I was quite surprised). I'm sure not everyone will have the same experience but I'm quite pleased and will continue to use it on my skin as long as I can get it."

[YEA] 05/11/2010: Jessica from Oshkosh, Wi Usa writes: "I have suffered from extreme acne for over four years. I am very anti-medication and always look for alternative medicine (ie. natural oils, silver water, ect). I finally was fed up enough that I made an appointment to see a dermatologist. My body was covered in huge, painful pimples. Mostly my back and some on my face. It was by word of mouth, from a friend equally as commited to alternative medicine, that I heard about Coconut Oil. I saw immediate results. Some go through a detox stage, as I did from taking internally, but saw clearing of my back acne within 24 hours of topical use. AMAZING!!! It also got rid of my candida (an over production of yeast in the digestive system that makes you extremely bloated after meals) - This stuff is a God-Sent!"
Replies07/24/2010: Vanilla from New York, Ny replies: "Response to:Jessica from Oshkosh, Wi Usa: I have also been suffering from back acne for years. Currently, I have back acne plus blemishes/scars all over my back (mostly the top area near the shoulders)from previous acne that hasn't perhaps healed properly. I just wanted to know in detail how you apply the coconut oil (i.e. topically? internally?) and how often (only after shower? 2-3 times a day?), and how long you leave it on (i.e. Overnight? 15mins?) and in what quantity (1 teaspoon?). I have decided to give coconut oil a try with my back acne. Yesterday, I applied an ample amount (well, just enough to cover the area in a thin filament) of coconut oil on my top back area after a shower and left it on. Today, I haven't noticed much change except my shoulder area feels a bit bumpier (whiteheads?) and no signs of clearing of the blemishes(maybe too early to tell?). I don't know if the appearance of an increase in bumps is a good thing (pulling toxins out?) or a bad thing (bad reaction?)
I will continue to apply coconut oil on my back everyday after each shower for at least 2-3 weeks to give it a fair shot. Any suggestions or comments or helpful tips/techniques are always welcome! :)"
[YEA] 12/05/2010: Caitlin from Austin, Tx replies: "I had back acne with dark spots. After using coconut oil (having my husband rub it into my back most nights), in 3 months, my back became totally clear of all blemishes.. Coconut oil is also clearing dark spots & long-term acne scars on my face and legs. Takes a good year but, it does work. For example: I've had a keloid scar on my leg from a deep gash I got while climbing a fence when I was a 13 year old tomboy. I'm 50ish now and with continued use of coconut oil, the keloid scar has flatened, lightened, and is barely noticeable. In fact, most of the scars on my legs are disappearing. My husband said my skin is getting flawless. My face is not quite there yet because I have not totally eliminated my worst allergy/candida foods: milk, wheat, & sugar. These products ravage my skin. But... Work is in progress. (:"

[YEA] 12/03/2008: Adele from New York, New York writes: "I had acne for over 15 years and tried everything from alcohol witch hazel, neutrogena, and even a doctor had prescribed glycolic acid, all of which worked slightly but then stopped. I had dermatologists suggest using dial soap to kill bacteria but what was I to moisturize with. I think within those 15 years I have spent about $1200-$3000 in skin/acne wash and moisturizers.
The simplest solution for me, only realized after hyperpigmentation and awful bumps in centralied areas:
1. daily jog/use trampoline and drink green smoothie (kale, apple, carrot) in the mornings
2. wash face with Dr Bronners peppermint soap
3. moisturize with COCONUT OIL.
That's it!! and this works regardless of stage in life (puberty, older age)...very simple and effective."

I keep a big pot available at all times and slather it on at night. You think your skin could never absorb this amount of oil,but it does and you dont smell like a coconut. It is amazing stuff and is part of my acne treatment, as its also antibacterial. Personally i think acne has more to do with overstressed liver organ, and working on that as well as skin is a good plan."

[YEA] 10/08/2008: Lavonne from Sydney, Australia writes: "I have had acne all my l life and have tried everything. AFter getting very frustrated I decided to do what my grandma always suggested. I started using coconut oil on my face, as a moisturiser, a couple of months ago and I am loving it. When using it you may get put off in the first week or so as the initial couple of weeks you will break out (some bad some very bad). Basically it's the coconut oil detoxoing your skin. That happened to me and I had to just keep up with it so as to see the long term results. Now my skin is clearer and scars are lighter. Remember that pure coconut oil is antibacterial, antiviral and best of all it's not bad fat.I have started taking the EVCO (3 tbsps per day) and am noticing the difference internally as well. I have a very low immune system and I am noticing that I don't catch colds easily, I am more active, clearer mentally and overall wonderful.I am glad I gave it a go and now am seeing the results. It is also great used in the oil cleansing method used by a lot of people (including me). I am so happy that I don't use chemicals any more.. It feels so much better. My grandma was right and I owe this to her.
PS: you have to have a healthy diet. I experiented with my foods as well and noticed what made me break out.... sweets (all kinds), fried foods, caffeine, alcohol and dairy products especially cheese. I now know if I have any of these foods i will break out."
Replies[SIDE EFFECTS] 05/23/2010: Sheila from London, England replies: "HiI would like to know from any body if bad skin breakouts is normal when using coconut oil.I started using coconut oil & for the first week my skin was great. But the next week my skin just flared up so bad, spots everywhere even on places that I never had spots before. So for fear I stopped. If I continue will it get better? If so how long must I use it to see a result or how long does the flare ups last? I would like to continue if there is light at the end of my dark tunnel. Thanks"
06/23/2010: Cat from Austin, Tx replies: "I had the same experience and was not sure if it was ACV or CO. I quit both for about 2 months as the rash seemed to get worse. I still used the coconut oil (CO) on my body, but not my face. Finally the rash cleared up but my face was left a mess. Then, I went back to using it; just a dab to moisturize instead of a slather and it worked fine. As Now and finally, I use CO alone to cleanse my face and I tolerate it very well; which lets me know that I was going through a detox/cleanse. Now I put a small glob on a large cotton round and clean my face with it before I cold shower in the morning and the last thing at night before bed. I'll never wash my face with soap again. I don't use anything else except I exfoliate with cayenne pepper and a dab of CO once a week, careful not getting the cayenne pepper into my eyes. This does work for me. My skin has lost the darker spots, is softer and the lines are slowly disappearing. I'm also back to taking ACV but only 1 tablspoon in 32 oz mug I sip for about an hour in the morning. The ACV is slowly brightening up my face and mood, helping my vision, increasing my thinking process. My advice: go slowly with these remedies. Don't take in or put on too much at first or you will experience a detox. If you have to, break it off a bit until your body adjusts; then, slowly reintroduce and see its affect. Your body; your way. Peace out!"

[YEA] 06/26/2007: C.J. from Rossford, Ohio writes: "I developed adult acne at age 18 despite dry skin. Recently, I was told to take zinc for my acne, but was already taking 200% and didn't want to risk overdosing, so I thought I'd crush a tablet and make it into a mask with coconut oil. Coconut oil sounded really good to me as it would moisturize and fight acne at the same time. Using this mask daily has made my acne much less red and started the healing process on my lingering acne scars. The zinc promotes healing and the coconut oil is supposed to have antibiotic properties. I crush one zinc tablet and add the contents of one coconut oil capsule to make a mask. Leave it on for 20-60 minutes. The longer the better, in my experience. Rinse it off with water and a mild soap. Follow up with a balancing toner."

[YEA] 01/17/2007: Amy from Boise, Idaho writes: "I have been using topical prescription acne meds for 2 years and have done pretty well. This winter I have had a terrible time with dry skin and acne. I have tried exfoliators and lots of moisturizer to relieve the dry skin flakes and have seen no improvement. Just more pimples and flakes. One morning I woke up with a large rash on my neck where I had used an exfoliator. That night I started using coconut oil on my face and neck. (not virgin, Spectrum brand refined) My neck looked much better the next day and I did not wake up with any new pimples which I was very surprised. It was scary putting something so oily on my face! My large pimples under my neck went away in 3 days. My flaky skin was gone in one day. My skin looks great, soon I will try the virgin coconut oil for my face and to include in my diet. This is the first time I have ever been able to say that something natural and possibly a fad REALLY worked for me."

Mine is cystic so it is painful regardless of the size and it scars. I have found what works for me. I cleanse my face morning and night with aveeno scrubbing clothes and then at night apply a very THIN layer of virgin coconut oil with a single drop of Tea Tree Oil. Once a week I will swab my face with Apple Cider Vinegar right before applying the VCO. My skin is glowing, clear and by morning my pores are small and my face is smooth and supple. I also drink ACV every 3 to 4 days in blueberry/pom juice, but I doubt I owe it the benefit."

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH

[YEA] 08/16/2011: Natcat86 from Gaithersburg, Maryland, Usa writes: "I had really bad acne all over my face and neck with the random appearance on my chest, back, or shoulders constantly for 14 years (starting at puberty), and as time went on it only got worse (so it wasn't caused by changes in hormones as I was led to believe). I stumbled upon some information on Diatomaceous Earth (DE) and became intrigued because of its many proported benefits (I recommend looking it up). It is relatively unknown, and only sold for pest control and consumption by animals, (but you can buy food grade DE online) but since it is used to mechanically kill bugs in grain silos and just about every person who has ever eaten grain which was stored in a silo has eaten DE, I figured it would be safe and I would try it. DE is the fossilized shells of a type of algae called Diatoms. Their shells are extremely hard and very sharp (but yet not dangerous to your cells) and they mechanically scrub the walls of your intestines, scraping away any build-up. Some DE passes through the intestinal walls and into the bloodstream and while it is there it scrapes plaque buildup away from the walls of veins and arteries. It basicly acts like a plumber in your body.
I found that most cases of acne are caused by toxins entering the blood stream through the digestive system (some degree of leaky gut), not by a problem with the skin itself. It is your body attempting to expel the toxins from your blood. When you expel the toxins which originate in your digestive tract through the digestive system, they don't have the opportunity to make it into your blood stream and thus cause acne by pushing through your skin. So... I began adding 1tsp DE to water every day for a week, then increased it to 1tbsp gradually after that and drank it daily for 2 months. I noticed a difference my skin within a day. By the time 2 months was up I no longer had acne. I had to stop consuming it for a little while after that because I slightly threw my body off balance (my skin became a little dry). After a month off, I started consuming it again in moderation and have been ever since. I have been able to consistently keep the acne away as long as I continue to consume it at least a couple of times a week. I highly reccomend it because it is very effective and it gets to the root of the problem instead of just treating the symptoms. I now have had only a few pimples (instead of many hundreds) within the last 9 months, and I know that in time I will get them to go away completely."

DIETARY CHANGES

[YEA] 05/25/2011: singer04 from California writes: "I've been struggling with adult acne for most of my adult life. But besides the acne I have had the following ailments: fatigue, depression, sharp head pains, vaginitis, rashes, distension of the stomach, cold hands/feet, etc.
Acne is not just about your face. It is just a reaction to whatever is happening inside your body. If you read up on Chinese face reading, the location of your acne indicates what is going wrong with your body. For example, when I had a chest cold the same area on my face would break out (either side, between my mouth and nose) which indicates the lungs. But even though I would see my Chinese herbalist/acupuncturist they would fix it but then it would come back, again and again.
Two months ago there were a lot of changes at my work and I was really stressed. My face broke out, the worst it's ever been. Nothing would calm it down. And even worse, I kept getting sick. Colds, flus, cough, etc. One after the other. It was exhausting. Then I went to a chiropractor who just happened to be gluten intolerant and she said that I was probably intolerant to gluten. I had nothing to lose, so I took gluten out of my diet. The first week I had a horrible headache that started everyday at 2pm, then I got sick again. But after three weeks, I started feeling better. My skin is flawless. It has never looked so great. I feel that my acupuncture appointments are even working better because I'm not constantly harming my body. I keep losing inches and my energy feels a lot better. My vaginitis is gone and my fatigue is dissipating.
Just a warning: the first few weeks are hard! The headaches were really painful and I kept getting sick but I feel so much better than before! Please remember that you are not doing this just for your skin but for you entire body. Your body is just trying to tell you something!
Another warning: Most gluten intolerants specialists don't want you to stop eating gluten before they test you because they need gluten in your system for the test to be accurate. (By the way, it's a really invasive test) I chose to remove it immediately because I don't care about the test. Even if they were to give me a positive test, the only thing they would do is to tell me not to eat gluten. It's not worth my time or effort."
Replies05/25/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Singer04 just an interesting aside. I read an article of a guy who makes fermented sourdough bread. He makes the starter over a couple of weeks and then when he makes the bread he ferments it for over 12 hours overnight before cooking it. He said many people who were gluten intolerant could eat the sourdough bread even though it was wheat. The secret was in the fermenting of it.These days all our breads are quick risen and not left long enough to ferment. It was an interesting viewpoint. Here is the article if you are interested in reading it. If true it may mean you don't need to stop wheat altogether, just when you are out.

I had tried tea tree oil on my arm but I broke out in hives and my arm became more inflamed. I think if I wasn't so worried the light bulb would have gone off sooner. The conditioner is obviously diluted. I almost broke my neck trying to get to the bathroom. I mixed up five drops of tea tree oil in one tespoon water and added it to 1 tablespoon Holista tea tree conditioner. I slathered this all over my arm and in ten minutes the swelling and redness almost gone. I put some on my chest and face same reaction. 08/17/2011: Dk from Pittsburgh, Pa replies: "First off, I think that if people with "anxiety disorder" qualify for disablity, then acne sufferers should, too! It is a definite hindrance to many job fields and creates a multitude of mental health issues in chronic victims, including anxiety and depression. I know, because I'm in my 37th year of battling acne!!Over the years, I've literally invested thousands of dollars in doctors, naturopaths, spas, saunas, tanning beds, cleansing and detoxification, fasting cures, prescription medications, both topical and oral, drug store acne products, natural remedies, herbals, cosmetics and reading materials. For most of my adult life, I have led a healthy lifestyle: I exercise vigorously and regularly, eat a very healthy diet, drink lots of water, get regular doses of sunshine, take vitamin supplements, avoid ingestion of chemicals and alcohol, engage in relaxing activities to de-stress from my job and try to get at least 5-6 hrs of sleep a night. I have a successful career and a large network of supportive family and friends, with whom I regularly socialize. People tell me all of the time that I look 10-15 years younger than my stated age, but I've also been insulted by the likes of aestheticians and even my ex-husband. Despite all of that, it is extremely frustrating and depressing to still walk around every day feeling I have to hide my natural skin! Even more disheartening is to watch my daughter begin her journey down this ugly road!
Most cleansing rituals & routines, as well as most topicals have led to my disappointment that my skin looked much worse, after using them, instead of clearer! The only real complete break from my cystic "adolescent-type" of acne that I have ever had was with the birth control pill. However, I choose not to take that any more, because of breast cancer, stroke and other possible risks.
I have discovered, though, that leaving corn and anything made with any of its byproducts, out of my diet seems to help. That may help to explain why some people do well on a "gluten-free" diet--maybe it's the corn, not the gluten. I have also found that eliminating non-cultured dairy and gluten-containing products does help my skin a little.
I agree with Chet from LA that the sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfates are a big culprit! They are even contained in many so-called "acne products. " (They want you to keep trying their products, so they put in an ingredient that actually causes acne??! ) Fortunately, there are a few inexpensive brands of shampoos and soaps that do not contain sulfates, e.g. some products from L'Oreal and Ivory and Irish Spring bar soaps.
I was wondering if anyone has had any positive experiences with CoEnzyme A/Pantothen, which I have recently seen advertised...."

No dairy (milk, cheese, ice-cream, yogurt) or meat products of any kind cured my adult acne problem. I did a 7-day juice fast to kick off this vegan way of living and my skin was amazing. After a year and a half of being vegan, my doctor suggested I begin eating fish for omega 3. He also said I was so healthy that I could indulge a little if I chose to; so I did! It only took a week for some acne to resurface from eating ice-cream, cow's butter and provolone cheese on 2 sandwiches. Skin is our biggest organ and it is the fastest way for the body to eliminate toxins. I believe the meat industry pumps the animals with antibiotics and hormones, which our bodies absorb when we consume it. If you cannot do a vegan diet, I would at a minimum eliminate dairy products from a cow. Try goat's cheese and milk, which is next on my list. As for meat, be sure to get organic free range GRASS FED! Cows can't easily digest corn or meal from corn. Check out a documentary called, "Food Inc." and see for yourself. Be well and healthy!"

[YEA] 08/16/2009: Bluebirdofparadise from Billings, Mt writes: "Hi,
I just wanted to write tell about some things that seem to be curing my acne.
First of all, I used to get pimples on my butt and I found that it was from the lotion I used (or sometimes I'd use baby oil after a shower). Anything with mineral oil or petroleum jelly or or artificial stuff like that in it would give me pimples. It took me a little while to figure it out because I'm really into moisturizing my skin and it's something I'd been doing for a long time. When I switched to using virgin coconut oil or other virgin oils (olive, grapeseed, etc.) the problem disappeared.
However, I still got pimples on my face, back, and chest. It was really embarrassing to wear a swimsuit or a dress with a low back or anything, because they were all over (esp. my back). Well, a couple of months ago I decided to become a vegetarian (for reasons other than my acne). When I did this, I also became concerned about my nutrition and started taking a tablespoon or two of both unsulphured blackstrap molasses and brewer's yeast every day, in addition to eating a diet almost entirely of whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and cold-pressed (virgin) oils. I couldn't believe what was happening to me, but after a week or two the zits on my chest totally went away. Next they started disappearing on my back and now they are totally gone there, too (except for some little red scars where they used to be, but they are disappearing too). Now my face is clearing up as well - and I didn't even get any new ones when I got my period. I'm putting shea butter and lotions I make myself out of olive oil or almond oil and beeswax on my face. The shea butter really seems to help the scars disappear quickly. I tried using Pond's a couple of days ago but when I did I had a big zit under my eye by the evening.
I'm convinced that my acne was caused mostly by my diet. I realized this even more after I went to the fair a couple of weeks ago and ate a bunch of deep-fried food (still vegetarian but very high fat content!). The next couple of days my acne flared up again badly. A huge pimple on my cheek, one on my chin, lots of tiny ones on my forehead, and several on my back. It didn't matter what I was (or wasn't) putting on my skin. They just came, and benzol peroxide seemed to make the one on my cheek worse. Now that I've been back to "normal" (high-fiber, low fat vegetarian) about a week all the pimples are almost gone again (and no new ones have appeared).
I know a vegetarian diet sounds extreme but it is totally worth it to me. I feel so much better and healthier and more beautiful. I can look at myself in the mirror now and see smooth skin all the way up and down my body, front and back. I think I was just taking in more toxins to my body than it could handle. This wasn't easy for me to see as I am petite and thin for my size - so I wouldn't have guessed that too much fat/toxins in my diet were causing the problem. Now I am certain this is the case! Plus I feel better and more energetic and happier than I have in years. So in a nutshell - eating vegetarian/whole unprocessed foods, making sure my diet is nutritionally sound (blackstrap molasses and brewers yeast) and not putting chemicals or mineral oils on my skin is turning out to be a wonderful acne cure I wasn't expecting. If you can do it, I'm sure it will make you better too."

I replaced it with Stevia, which I mix in drinks and Xylitol, which I use for baking. Removing sucrose completely cured my acne in 3-4 weeks. I also lost weight as a side benefit and I never get colds anymore. I also never breakout anymore and people have commented on how healthy my skin looks. I returned to the sugar habit once (during the holidays) and my acne returned in full force. I also caught bronchitis. That was the last time I relapsed, I learned my lesson."

Acne isn't really a skin problem. The body isn't processing something that it's allergic to, so it eliminates the toxins thru the skin. You have to get rid of the source of the problem, not just treat the symptoms. Acne is just a symptom of an internal issue. I strongly recommend consulting w/ a naturopath. Dermatologists have never helped me clear up my skin. They don't seem to understand that it's a systemic problem."

I used to have many health ailments, many of which I have read about here. The only thing that works to cure them and keep them away is a raw diet. When eating a raw diet, you avoid most of the foods that cause the problems in the first place. Consuming too much cooked proteins, especially wheat and dairy, causes disease. Cooking the proteins makes them difficult for the body to break down the protein. The excess proteins clog up the lymph and other organs of elimination causing an over growth of bacteria (colds, cysts, etc.)which in turn causes disease. The disease usually shows up in the weakest organs that have usually been abused the most from a wrong diet. There is a wealth of info at waisays.com and barefoots forum at curezone.com. Herbs are a great way to aid in healing. When you just start cleansing and eating a raw diet, they can help you heal faster. Just wanted to mention this. Thanks and have a great day!"
