L-Glutathione, Vitamin B6

[YEA]  10/24/2009: Penelope from Boston, Ma: "The most incredible supplements I have ever tried for acne are L-Glutathione (500 milligrams up to 3 times a day) and vitamin B6 (ONLY get the P5P form. The other form can cause neuropathy). Split a 50 milligram pill of vitamin B6 (P5P) up and take a few times a day. I would ask your doctor about going up to as high as 100 milligrams of P5P if you really need that much to keep your skin clear. My skin is completely clear as long as I take the B6 or the L-Glutathione. I do not need to take both of these supplements together to have clear skin, - both have worked separately equally as well to clear my skin in record time (about a week to see results) but test it out and see what works for you - both have amazing health benefits. I have noticed that L-Glutathione has the added benefit of also making my hair really shiny and healthy looking.

Both vitamin B6 and L-Glutathione are potent detoxifiers of the liver so go up to the dose you need VERY slowly! If you break out initially, bear with it - this is just a detox/cleansing reaction.

Try opening a capsule of vitamin B6 (P5P) and take a third of it - or half of it - and see how you do Same goes with the L-Glutathione pills or powder . You can take the same dosage up to 3 times a day. Definitely take the B6 with food because it can make you nauseous. Also, the B6 (P5P) could keep you up by giving you energy if you take it late at night.

Topically, Jojoba oil is great for acne. It moisturizes without clogging pores. I wear it all over my face and neck at night. It is the only moisturizer that does not break me out!

I have suffered with severe cystic acne and was on 3 courses of Accutane so I know what it's like to suffer with acne. With either of these supplements, thankfully I don't have to suffer anymore. I hope this info helps anyone out there who is struggling with acne."

[YEA]  10/17/2008: Roo from London, UK: "Lemongrass oil cured my acne

After trying Hydrogen Peroxide, ACV, aspirin as well as witch hazel, benzoyl peroxide cream, oxycycline cream and tea tree oil, the pimple on my face still refused to budge. It was one of those red kind that has no head.

Looking for a new remedy
I read on the internet that Lemongrass oil had anti-microbial, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal and fungicidal properties and could be used to treat acne.

Even though I had read that to use it in creams or oils you should dilute it I decided to get its full properties perhaps I should not dilute it. I applied it neat onto a cotton ear bud which I then applied directly to my pimple.
Overnight my pimple has shrunk, is less inflamed and appears to be disappearing!"

Lemon Treatment for Acne

Home Remedy Ingredients

  • Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Cotton swab or facial cleansing cloth

A dash of lemon juice can be used like a toner to clear away excess oils and clarify your skin. You may want to dilute the lemon juice in a bit of water as well if the lemon has a bit of a bite to it.

[YEA]  12/01/2009: K.j. from Phoenix, Az: "Hi,

I just wanted to say NAY to putting OACV on your face for Acne. It made my acne worse. I wouldn't recommend it at all. (But I would for taking is wonderful that way for great health!)

But as a YEA, I'd like to tell people suffering from Acne that I recently started drinking the juice of a lemon in hot water first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything else. (Then I wait 20 mins or so before eating breakfast.)

I found that in about a week, my acne had cleared up considerably. If I stop it, or forget, it flares back up. Then I start the cycle again, and it clears up.

So, if you keep drinking it, I truly beleive it will keep acne at bay. And I drink it through a straw so that it's not too acidic for my teeth.

[YEA]  Marisol from Brookly, NY: "Retina micro really works! it cleared up my face considerably...but one day it ran out! i was devastated lol but thanks to lemon juice, steaming and vinegar, my face has cleared up once again. i put acv in the morning, wash it off after 5 minutes, then exfoliate with st.ives apricot scrub, later on, usually in the evening i steam my face (put ur face over boiling water, and let it open up ur pores) after that i wash it off with warm water to cleanse all the dirt that has come to the top, make sure the water is warm so that the pores are still open, then i take squeezed lemon juice(which is refrigerated (cold)) and put it on my face, this closes the pores and it is allowed to penetrate deep into the pores since they are open, i leave the lemon juice on overnight and in the morning i start over. it will help ur skin!"

[YEA]  04/24/2009: Lee from Vegas, Nevada replies: "I tried this before reading the suggestion and it works..."
[YEA]  04/23/2011: Veronica from Westbury, Ny replies: "hi. Ive gotten adult acne since after tubal ligation and of course with all the stress of work and home and everything else. I cleaned and tried just about everything that I could except laser and prescription meds. A friend told me to use lemon juice and salt scrub on my acne you dont need alot just enough and wash away with warm water. Omg! The first night I used it the redness and acne and old scares faded some. I cant imagine how fast I saw the difference. And I put moisturizer afterwards since lemon is acid I dont want to peel. hope this helps all who have acne."
04/25/2011: Kelly from Nashville, Tn replies: "Be very careful with the lemon juice. Lemon juice is phototoxic and will cause the skin to hyperpigment. Use sunscreen liberally and constantly!"
04/25/2011: Ben from Columbus, Oh replies: "PLEASE DO NOT USE SALT ON YOUR FACE!!

also lemon juice is way too acidic..... You are better off just using plain old baking soda as a facial scrub; far easier on your skin... As for lemon juice, WAY too acidic!!! Just make a paste of baking soda and water in palm of hand, and gently 'scrub' over your cleanser or soap later, then rinse rinse rinse with COOL NEVER HOT water... If you get a breakout, you could dab some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar on the pimples; the smell leaves right away.. If you get a breakout, apply the apple cider vinegar as many times a day as you can, gently rubbing it into the pimple... Gently rub the Apple Cider Vinegar into the area for 7 times then let dry..... Within 48 hrs. That pimple will either be gone (my experience) or on its 'last legs'.... Apple Cider Vinegar reduces the soreness too.

But Please no SALT ON YOUR FACE... Baking soda is much gentler and does the job very very well!!

with oily skin, exfoliate with the b. Soda 2 times a week........ And wash your hands before you wash your face!!!!!"

[YEA]  Matt from Australia: "Lemon juice is good for killing toxins, but use sparingly on your face or you will turn white as a ghost. Lemon is a bleach."

[YEA]  10/06/2009: Nicola from Portland, Or replies: "lemon juice is also good for reducing redness from breakout scars or just when your skin needs help fading the redness of the acne breakouts. just a bit of juice on a cotton ball or cloth applied to the area. i usually follow up with vitamin e, coconut oil or some other moisturizer to make sure the area doesn't get overly dry."
10/06/2010: Lanie from Hollywood, Ca replies: "Lemon juice has worked wonders for me. Over the years my skin has become an oil slick. I heard that lemon juice can help restore the balance in your skin, so I stopped using most of the other products to keep oil at bay. After I gently wash my face, I soak a cotton ball with fresh lemon juice and apply it to my skin like a toner. Then I apply moisturizer (oil of olay). My super oily skin is now back to normal. Hope this helps."
[YEA]  04/03/2013: Heather from San Diego, Ca replies: "Lemons work to clear acne breakouts on my fair, middle aged, skin.

I wouldn't let the nay-sayers who say it's too acidic scare you off. Who cares if it is acidic if it's quickly clearing up the embarrassing acne? If you have dark skin, I suppose it would be wise to experiment on an inconspicuous area.

Try it. Also drink mint tea and eat raw carrots or carrot juice."

[YEA]  06/24/2012: Darrell from Louisville, Ky: "A very good treatment for acne is Lysine. It is very cheap and can be found in any store's vitamin section. It typically comes in 500mg pills. I'll chew up 2 or 3 of them a day when I have an acne outbreak and it'll be gone in no time. Hope this helps and good luck."

[NAY]  04/03/2013: Heather from San Diego, Ca replies: "Nay. I have used lysine regulalry for viral issues and don't notice any difference in my hormonal breakouts. May work for some people though."

Milk of Magnesia

[YEA]  12/18/2008: Pamela from Houston, Texas: "I didn't believe it but a friend of mind share with me an article he had read in the newspaper about a man who used milk of magnesium to clear up a long standing bad case of acne. We both have been putting the milk of magnesium on acne break outs at night before we go to bed. We are both happy at the results as both of the problem spots on our faces are clearing up. Who would of thought it would work. I have tried everything on my face and there were always some spots that nothing seem to work. It works slowly but everyday you notice the acne getting smaller and smaller. Plus I am noticing that I am not getting the usual breakout of new blemishes."

[YEA]  03/28/2008: Christa from Mountlake Terrace, WA: "Milk of Magesia(Philips brand ex.) is an amazing mask to draw out the impurities and treat acne. You can use this mask once a week or daily for very oily skin. It has done wonders for my skin. It works much more effectively than any clay mask etc. You can use Philips Milk of Magnesia brand or any store brand works fine. Shake up well and apply. The consistancy is liquid, but will dry and harden quickly. Then rinse. The milk combined with the baking soda scrub that has been mentioned previously by others is an effective combination to treat acne. You simply mix the baking soda with either water or a gentle facial cleanser and scrub in lightly, not too abrasively to irritate your skin. Because I have sensitive skin, I do not use both treatments on the same day, but it is up to your disgretion. Also another great remedy to treating acne is wiping H2O2 or your skin. My final tip is not a holistic remedy, yet is very effective: benzol peroxide, you can purchase this at any drugstore. You only use a small amount and gradually work up the frequency of application, because benzoyl peroxide can be very drying. Also, do not use hydrogen peroxide the same time that you use the benzoyl peroxie for this would be too strong for your skin. Hope this info helps someone. Good luck, this has been the trick for me."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  02/13/2009: Elena from Stamford, Ct: "im taking a whole body cleanse that has Milk Thistle, and I'm just finishing my first week with it. so far im very happy I have lots of energy, and I haven't been breaking out. my face is starting to clearing up... I'm taking this cleanse to test to see if i would clear my acne, because when I went to Italy for 5 weeks my acne cleared up once I got back to CT I started to breake out all over again, and I eat pretty much everything organic, I even use organic toothhpaste, organic deodorant, and organic hair and face products. I started getting acne when I was about 13 or 14 I stop taking medication when I was 20 now im 23 and still have 3rd grade acne. I have gone to many dermatologists, and have gone on accutane. I became an esthetician and I took basic herbal studies to fine a cure. once I started to change my diet it has helped but it wasn't enough im still researching but im also finding out Brewer's yeast (available at GNC) helps cure acne I haven't tryed it yet but im planing on it after my cleanse which you can get also at GNC but the web sit for it is I recommend looking online for one that cost less. all I can say is research and fine what works for you because everyone is diffrent ex. my older brother took some mediction, and once he got off the medication he was clear and never broke out again, and he has no acne scarring you can't even till he suffered from acne. my older sister started breaking out when she was 15, and now she is 27 and still on medication, and she tried getting off, because its costing alot but she breaks out. don't give up and don't pick I've been really good about not picking and I dont have acne scarring thank god!"

[YEA]  09/25/2008: Erica R from Miami, Florida: "Milk Thistle cured my acne! I'm now 21 and have had acne for a few years. After many trips to the dermatologist, I was prescribed Accutane which gave me acne-free skin for about a year. I then did acid peels which only made my skin worse. I was also put on birth control - that didn't help either. After lots of research, I finally decided it was time to attack the CAUSE of acne, and not the actual problem. For those of you who don't know it, acne is the cause of a poor functioning liver. If the liver is not functioning properly, acne forms (these are the toxins trying to get out of your body). Therefore, MILK THISTLE is a great natural herb that promotes healthy liver function by getting rid of the damaged liver cells, and creating new, healthy ones. I have not had a pimple since I started taking it, but be patient, it could take up to two weeks for you to see great results! Also, I take the liquid herbal extract - about 30 drops in a glass of water, twice a day."

09/25/2008: THealth from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Hi Erica.

Good to know that your acne has cleared and you have beautiful skin . Thank you for your wonderful feedback and letting us know the root cause of acne. I would also like to try the Milk Thistle so can you please give me more input about the same. What is Milk Thistle and where do you get this. Also please let me know what liquid herbal extract you are using. I would like to try the same also. Thanks a lot. Thealth"

EC: Good info here:

[YEA]  01/07/2008: Sandy from Bethesda, Maryland: "Milk Thistle has SIGNIFICANTLY improved my acne and hopefully cured it. I have not had any breakouts since I started taking the supplement to cleanse my liver. It has been about three weeks and my face is completely clear minus a few scars that I am still trying to fade. YOU WILL SEE HUGE RESULTS IN YOUR FIRST WEEK. This product has worked wonders for me. I have tried many so-called cures (prescription drugs and over-the-counter) but none has given me the results that I have seen thus far. PLEASE TRY IT. I take two capsules daily which are 175mg each. It is very inexpensive and I am confident you will be very pleased with the outcome."

[YEA]  07/24/2006: Nathan from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: "Supplementing my diet with molasses has decreased my acne about 97% in two weeks. I take two tablespoons when I wake up in the morning, and two before I go to bed at night. It eases digestive problems, so if your acne is related to constipation, it's a sure-fire bet. It also supplements you with minerals such as Chromium, which about 90% of Americans are deficient in."

EC: 2 teaspoons of black strap molasses with one teaspoon of sulphur (MSM) once or twice daily to cleanse the blood. Skin eruptions may increase initially -- an indication that the blood is being cleansed.

[YEA]  03/08/2013: Julie from Washington, Dc: "I just had to share my experiences and results with this wonderful community who finally helped me get a handle on my acne.

I am in my early 30's and have struggled with face and body acne since my teens. I was put on a wide variety of drugs for a good part of my 20's but I knew they were just a band-aid and not dealing with the root cause (and they were waay expensive). I finally went off of them a few years ago and have been trying one thing after another to get this under control.

After reading a bunch on your site at the beginning of this year this is what I have done:

* Take ACV every morning.
* Cook with coconut oil and drink in my tea throughout the day.
* Stop using my 'acne pads' that are very drying - I just learned from a former skin care consultant that these products are so drying that they can actually trigger the oil production response in your skin. What! That makes sense to me so I stopped about a month ago.
* Each night I wipe my makeup off with a gentle face wipe and then I wipe my T Zone with Hydrogen Peroxide. It makes my skin feel SOOO clear and dry and smooth
* Each morning after my shower I use a gently high quality moisturizer on my face.
* The only other thing I have done in relation to my skin is that I cut out the greek yogurt I was eating everyday.

Obviously I tried a lot of things at once so it is hard to tell what made the most difference. My heart tells me the biggest shifts came from the ACV the Hydrogen Peroxide and ditching the super-drying acne pads.

Now that I am 2 months into this process I can't tell you how different my face looks and feels. No more deep cystic acne. Significantly reduced pimples, smaller pores, and the redness from years of other pimples is starting to fade. When I get a pimple here or there it is gone quickly and isn't nearly as painful.

I do still believe I need to make more shifts in my diet for the acne to go away completely but I am SO pumped that these remedies are helping as much as they are. Thank you Earth Clinic!"

03/10/2013: Joy from Battleground, Wash replies: "Just curious, how much coconut oil do you use a day in your food and drink.... Glad to hear your positive reports and encourging news of improved skin."
03/10/2013: Joy from Battlegound, Wash replies: "Hi, I read the book by Mary Newport on Alzheimers and she talked about coconut oil and I then started reading web sites to find out more.

I was hit by a car in the abdomen at 3 and flew 15 feet and hit a firehydrant with my head, so I have trauma to the brain, ADHD , Dyslexia and memory problems and learning challenges... so I followed some things I read and started on a tsp a day in my oatmeal and put a little on my skin and it soaked right in. My skin is EXTREMELY SENSITIVE , but NO Problems with the coconut oil. I am up to 3- 7 tsp. a day and coat my face neck hands and feet daily. dry heels are GONE.

I got a little acne at first and I've always had some but I haven't had any in a while , just kept putting the oil on the outbreaks. Hope it helps."

03/12/2012: Alexandria from Atlanta, Ga: "I had moderate acne on my forehead when I hit puberty at the age of seventeen, but the doctor put me on birth control and it went away. Well, about a year and a half ago, I discontinued the birth control because of side effects and how much it cost. I am 21 now so I was on it for a good three years. When I did that, my face freaked out. A lot of people suffering from acne, especially in the older years, have hormonal imbalances.

I go to an Aveda school and they teach you the importance of cleansing your body inside and out and how important it is to use natural products and not synthetic ones. According to Aruveydic medicine, where you break out on your bady and face is where you are having troubles in your body (chin-hormones, like before menstrual. Forehead-intestinal upset, from food allergies or parasites. Cheeks- liver and lungs, could be from pollution, smoking, virus, bacteria)

So I went to a good doctor(not one trying to give me random medication) who did a lot of tests and it turned out I have a major hormonal imbalance (thank you birth control), multiple food allergies (gluten, dairy, peanuts, pork) and she also thought I might have a parasite build up (most people have parasites in their systems). Parasites can cause you to hang on to toxins and then cause you to break out. Food allergies can cause you to break out. Hormones can cause you to break out.

Bottom of the line, acne is your body's way of telling you that something is not right. And it is a bacterial infection once it occurs so you must treat it accordingly. I try to use as natural of face regime as possible because I am very senstive to synthetic chemicals, parabens, petrochemicals, and fragrance adn I always have been since I was an infant.

First I would suggest detoxing your body in some way, and STICKING TO IT! It will get much worse before it gets better, but stick it out.

You might need to get an antibiotic if your acne has gone septic, because then it could get into your blood stream and cause a lot of harm to the rest of your body.

I personally LOVE aveda and I use the 'botanical kinetics' line. Face washes made for acne irritate my skin and are too harsh. However, try different things out, everyone is different. But I highly reccomend natural or organic face washes. They are less likely to irritate your skin further. African black soap and tea tree oil are wonderful things to use to cleanse the face with. there are many products that contain these two in them at natural food stores.

ALWAYS CLEANSE TWICE! Use a gentle motion with you fingers and cleanser twice! The first time removes dirt, pollution, makeup, the second time insures nothign is left behind and gives your face wash a chance to work.

Next, exfoliate with a chemical exfoliant! Abrasive exfoliants are WAAAAYYY TOO harsh for acne skin and actually SPREAD THE BACTERIA AROUND and cause you to break out MORE! I made this mistake until recently when an esthitician explained to me how to properly cleanse the skin. Until your acne clears up more, you don't want to risk making your acne septic my spreading the infection. I put the exfoliant in a spray bottle and spritz it instead of rubbing harsh cotton on my face. THIS STUFF IS MIRACLE SPRAY. If you don't want to get the rest of the B. K. Line, at least give thsi stuff a try. it has a small % of saycilic acid in it to help kill bacteria and exfoliate dead skin cells.

Then, at night I just lightly pat moisturizer on my face. DO NOT RUB IT into your skin. This will also spread the bacteria around. I use the Botanical kinetics line BUT sometimes it can irritate some people's skin. It would be best to use 1-2 drops of ORGANIC jojoba and one drop of tea tree oil. Jojoba is the closet plant oil to sebum that our bodies produce and tea tree is the natural version of benzyl peroxide. It dries up acne and acts as an antiseptic.

In the morning I usually just spritz a toner (ORGANIC witch hazel works well. The B. K. Line has a toner with witch hazel in it already) and then lightly pat my moisturizer on my face, while it is still damp from the toner bc it will soak in nicer. I ALWAYS use sunscreen if I am going to be exposed to the sun. I like La Rosche Posay tourmaline spf60 and Neutrogena dry touch spf100. They both are extremly light and do not leave a greasy feel to the face.

I use a face mask once a week, depending on what my face needs. Sometimes I just use organic honey to heal my scars, kill bacteria and add moisture into my skin. Sometimes I use a clay and ACV mask. Aveda makes a mask in the Tourmaline line that helps reduce scarrign and it is very gentle. A mask just helps give more nutrients to your skin. BE VERY GENTLE when you do masks, you don't want to use anythign irritating or abrasive.

I spot treat my acne with staright tea tree essential oil. I have tried B. Perox and Say. Acid but they don't seem to be as effective. Just get a dropper and drop a couple of drops onto your finger and lightly apply it to the effected area.

SO, from doing this, I have noticed a HUGE improvement in my horrible cystic and the reoccurence there of. Get PLENTY of sleep, your body heals itself when you sleep. Drink water with ACV in it to help detox your body, and be very careful of what you eat, medicines and vitamins you take, and even products you use (laundry soap, perfume, lotion, soaps) these can all cause you to break out because they have a lot of synthetic chemicals in them that irritate the lymphatic system in your body. Usually, those with acne, less is more and be VERY GENTLE or you will irritate it more and cause scarring. I made that mistake... So learn from me, be very gentle! Washign twice helps remove all that makeup so you don't have to scrub so hard to remove it all!

And get your hormone levels checked out. That could be the root of all the evil. There are a lot of natural ways to help regulate hormones, although you may sometimes have to take another approach."

03/12/2012: Tina from Houston, Us replies: "High probiotic foods like Kefir, Kombucha, Sauerkraut and also freshly juiced green organic vegetables are a great way to eliminate Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis. Good gut health is key to removing and improving any skin conditions. Took me about 3-4 months to restore to normal."
04/18/2012: Jordan from Aliso Viejo, Ca replies: "How does one get their hormone levels checked? All of this sounds a lot like my problem. And how do I fix them if they are imbalanced? Please help."

[YEA]  04/23/2010: Wyevon from Midland, Ontario Canada: "Hi! Over the last few years I've found my "cure" for pimples. First, remove the sources. I found that products (pomades, mouse, gels ect..even conditioner)on the part of my hair that touched my face/shoulders was garanteed to give me pimples. Hand creams and even some hand soaps would give me pimples if I touched my face! Use a hand soap that rinses clean.

Here's my regimen: I wash with pure (saponified) oil soaps, scented with natural oils. Then, as a toner, you can use 3% h2o2 (carefull not to touch brows or eye lashes, it will bleach it, trust me).

Moisturiser? A big culprit in causing pimples. For over 15 years now my favorite has been jojoba oil. It's the only one that actually will keep the sebum flowing instead of clogging pores. Sebum (aka oily skin) will harden, clog pores, cause painful pimples.

What I use when I get the ocasional pimple (or should I say the start of one, deep/painfull or otherwise)? The best that I've found was simply mixing a bit of unpasturized honey with plain witch hazel (any pharmacy carries it). The ratio is about 1 to 8. If it's too sticky, where makeup won't go on properly, dilute some more. It's quite watery. Keep in a small bottle. Will last a long time. Rub on pimples 2-3 times a day to stop them from even coming to the surface. Honey is antibacterial and moisturizing. You don't get the awefull red/drying flaking effect of most acne creams. Keeps it from getting infected.

I also always had a problem with pimples on my back, chest and arms. Solution? A good old fashion body brush. Go figure!! As long as I regularly brush my skin (when it's dry) with a plant fiber body brush, I have clear skin! The brushing removes the dead skin cells that (you guessed it) BLOCK YOUR SKIN PORES!!! Shower AFTER brushing to wash away the dead skin.

What have I learned? Pimples occur when your skin is trying to remove toxins from you body and it can't find an exit because of CLOGGED PORES!!!

PS: I'm curious to see if this works for anyone else..."
