Better But With Side Effects

I have been in the healing profession (practitioner, researcher, advocate) for 30 years, nothing comes close to my experience with MSM, I am so sorry it took this long to try it. My chronic asthma gone in 3 days!! On albuterol for almost 40 years. I am in shock. Some side effects which I consider to be cleansing symptoms. Nausea, sleeplessness and skin breakouts, but I did start on a high dose of 20 grams a day. After three weeks no more 'side effects'. My energy has greatly increased, I feel quite euphoric every day now. The only time I had that kind of euphoria was by drinking three glasses of organic green juices a day. I think people on heavy medications, mercury fillings, toxic diet are going to have more difficulties with it, so building up from a small dose with extra vitamin C and plenty of pure water will help.

The other supplement that really helps is Vitamin D3, I take 16,000iu liquid daily, no colds for two years now and my chronic bronchitis of 20 years has disappeared. Some years it was mild others, severe triggering serious asthma attacks. So the combination of Vitamin and MSM has been miraculous for me. This great website encouraged me to try MSM. Thanks so much.

p.s. Brushing my teeth with MSM has whitened them.

Hello Ivory Coast from Loco, Ca.

Look in the Yellow pages for a local farmers co-op store and go there to buy the MSM crystals for your little kitty. They will probably have it at a very reasonable rate.

Your kitty probably won't even realize she is getting it if you sprinkle it over some sardines or tuna. Sardines is probably healthier eating.

I have started using 3000mg of pure MSM (capsule form) and also found my energy levels are through the roof! I'm taking msm for melasma but this is a fantastic side effect

Sorry for all the posts but I think this website has changed my life!

Try giving your cat a tablespoon of plain yogurt 1-2 times a day and it should help clear up the reoccurring eye infections (it did for my dog). I also give him 1 tablet of chewable acidopholis daily.. We haven't had any eye infections for 2yrs now!

For the cat, I always put the crystals in a liter of water. You shake it up for awhile until it dissolves and it is like nothing at all is in there. Give the kitty a liter of water with that in it and she will drink it, no problem.

You should be drinking a lot of water anyway. The pure MSM in crystal form is recommended. Start with a quarter teaspoon a day then work up to a full teaspoon. If you need more for your symptoms, it is ok to take much more. Your body will take what it needs and eliminate the rest.

I love the stuff. Don't take it after 2pm if it makes you jittery.

Empty the MSM capsule or crush the caplet, put it in a spoon of soft cat food ...this may help :)

Neck Pain

Regarding Vet MSM.

I met a man that told me he was in a car accident a few years ago and broke his neck. A surgeon wanted to operate on his neck and the man refused. The man was told about Veterinarian MSM for human injuries and decided to try it. He told me he purchased the Veterinarian MSM at a feed store. I didn't ask how much he used but he told me that the Veterinarian MSM fixed his broken neck! I thought I would mention this on Earth Clinic.

Old Injuries

I have found that taking MSM seems to reduce pain from old injuries and arthritis. Also, MSM seems to add an essential nutrient to the system. It would be good to read one of the books written about this ingredient, nutritional sulphur, since it will answer many questions that people will have. I told a friend about MSM and he started to take it, and found he felt immensely less pain in his back.

Many people swear by MSM as an effective pain reliever in oral and topical application, but like other supplements, alternatives and prescription medications, it works excellently in some and not at all in some and in some, there can be unpleasant side effects.

As an example of this I will describe what happened with my sister and my neighbor who were both using mag oil (MO) for diverse body pain issues. Both were getting approximately 80% pain relief using Magnesium Oil (MO). My neighbor noticed, after years of use, that MO pain relief was declining and she came over to ask what I thought about it.

Previously she was using borax for pain management and it worked extremely well for her, but her doctor asked her to stop taking it, but did not explain why to her. From that point forward, her pain level increased and her quality of life (QOL) decreased very noticeably. I noticed when I would see her outside that she was moving very poorly and was obviously in pain. She normally had very good posture, but when I saw her outside, she was bent over and could not stand straight up. From that point forward she was using MO to effectively relieve the majority of her pain for years, but more recently she told me that MO seemed to be losing effectiveness for her and was wondering what else she could use. I asked her about going back on borax and she said her doctor was insistent that she not go back on borax, but still gave her no reason. Oddly, her doctor was not offering her anything to help her pain even though he could clearly see that she had deteriorated.

From that point forward, she started using topical MSM and that alleviated about 90 % of her pain so she was thrilled! She wasn't good with taking it orally because she couldn't get past the bitterness of it at the dosage she wanted to take and that dose made the MSM capsules too impractical for her. I was watching her and how she was moving and clearly the topical MSM was doing wonders for her. She was standing straight again and moving like a healthy 65 year old(she is in her early 80's). Needless to say, she is now a very happy lady!

On the other hand, my sister who is currently using MO to relieve pain in her neck and upper back with very good effect, wanted to give topical MSM a try also. First she tried it orally and found it to be too bitter to tolerate so she applied it similarly to how she normally applies MO and she was horrified to find out that almost immediately after applying MSM topically, she got that unbearable bitter taste in her mouth again! To add insult to injury, she also lost her sense of smell and taste for 2 to 3 days! She is now back on MO.For me, MSM and DMSO offer me no pain relief at all or at least none that I am able to discern, but I recognize that its effects vary widely from person to person. Borax on the other hand works unbelievably well for me while I have seen many people who did not benefit from borax. It's a lot about trial and error to see what works best for you.So there you have it, sometimes supplements work incredibly well for one person while being a nightmare for someone else or just not effective for the purpose!

I forgot to mention regarding my neighbor and MSM applied topically, she told me that it makes her skin softer and her hair fuller. She said she just spritzes her hair and skin with her spray bottle of MSM. Another friend that uses MSM from a spray bottle recently told me that her skin had started feeling rough and the MSM spray made it feel smooth again!

Hi Art,

My husband stopped using the borax hand cream when he read that that even topical use might be a problem for people with kidney disease. That may have been the case with your neighbor. He is now using MSM, also, and having some pain relief with it. Thank you for your always helpful, well researched posts that have benefitted so many here.

Hi Rsw,

Regarding borax, a few things. Borax has a low toxicity that is even lower than table salt or roughly similar. If you look for studies on kidney toxicity from borax, if you can find any, they will have used dosing that is way beyond Ted's recommendations and there will be health issues under such conditions just as there would be if you consumed similar high doses of salt. You will be more likely to find studies showing that borax may have positive effects on the kidneys. Borax moves through the system quickly and Ted's actual protocol prevented any potential for toxic borax buildup because he called for 4 days supplementing and 3 days off.

The 3 days off was long enough to allow borax to clear, yet still get the very long lasting benefit of borax against multiple forms of arthritis with the 4 days on borax. I look at borax as more of an actual treatment that can reverse arthritis for every extended periods of time or possibly indefinitely, but I consider MSM as a very good pain reliever and antiinflammatory for some, but not me.

My experience with borax even when I was doing 5 days on and only 2 days off, is that it put my arthritis into remission for over 12 years now and I had a kidney and liver test done about a year ago with no problem with my kidneys or liver. I was concerned about taking borax when I was first contemplating starting on it, so I did as much reading as possible on it and I think that is what finally convinced me to start taking it as the very first box of borax I bought sat on the shelf for at least three months before I finally started taking it!

Another point is that I do not even take borax 3 days a week now. I probably average two times per week at most now and have gone well over three months with no return of symptoms after years of use. My psoriatic arthritis was "severe" and affected the majority of joints in my body. I may even be cured, but I won't stop taking borax because of its many other health effects in humans.

Topically applied borax is very poorly absorbed through the skin and that is why when I made a hand lotion for my brother in law, I was not sure if enough would be absorbed through the skin and dermal layers to be effective. It was, but it was slower than had he taken it orally. I think Ted once said that lower dosing would work, but it would just take longer to work and I think my brother in law's case tends to confirm what Ted said. I do not mean this as a knock on MSM because MSM works very well for some people in relieving pain and reducing inflammation and you can not really compare apples to oranges.

In the case of your husband, where he believes that borax will or could damage his kidneys at the dosing that Ted came up with, it may be better to follow what he believes rather than always being bothered by the idea that he is damaging his kidneys by taking borax. How are you doing and does the problem (OLP) persist or have you been able to figure out a resolution?

MSM: Headaches and nightmares and excessive thirst as a side effect but wow, almost pain free. Had pain in knees, neck, hips, wrists, elbows, and shoulder, feet, back, fingers on right hand. I can function again without pain. Been only a week and a half since taking it.

MSM is a natural substance (as is cortisol), found even in the oceans. It could be that your symptoms were simply caused by one of the healing aspects of MSM which very few other nutrients can replicate:
It increases, dose dependent and therefore also depends on body weight, the cellular membrane porosity , thus rate and amount of nutrient, metabolic waste and signaling molecules across the cell's membrane. This holds for all or nearly all tissue and organ cells. So perhaps you actually suffered a slight reaction to a too-fast re-balancing from too many toxins on the move at the same time? This is why with MSM one should start with a small dose for the first week, then increase over many more weeks in increments to the maximum suggested dose based on body weight.

At the end of August my 59 year old active male relative fractured, I believe it was 3 cervical (neck) vertabrae in an accident. He remembers floating face down in the water and thought he was going to drown before someone turned him over. He said he remembers telling them that he couldn't feel anything at that time. He was airflighted home on the ventilator and went through surgical repair after extensive studies of his injuries. Because of heavy sedation, still on ventilator, and complications of pneumonia communication was very limited, but about the only progress noted during the next two weeks was in trying to wean him off the ventilator, to find that he could do some breathing on his own, but he was still on the ventilator much of the time, however the respiratory rate was set much slower which means that he was doing a lot of breathing on his own (vent doesn't kick in as long as the patient is breathing adequately without it). When moved to rehabilitation, he had some sensory function of upper and lower extremities, very slight motor function of the upper extremities. When asked for prognosis, about the only thing his doctors would tell the family was that the longer he went without regaining use of arms & legs, the less likely that he would ever regain it.

About 2 or 3 weeks after entering rehab, he and his wife decided to restart him on MSM since it had helped his arthritis so much before the accident. Approximately 1 week after restarting MSM, when she carried carried him for walks in his wheelchair, he suddenly started talking about getting what he described as a "total body electrical buzz" everytime the wheelchair hit a bump, which was a new experience for him. He has regained more use of hands and fingers also. We are hoping that continuation of the MSM will awaken the motor function pathways in his spinal cord as it apparently has in the sensory pathways. His need for pain medication decreased after the "total body electrical buzz" began also.

Of course he has also had a lot of prayers sent out by many people which we are sure have made a difference also.

P.S. I googled MSM and found that DMSO is converted into MSM by our bodies and is composed of a methyl group (chemistry lingo) and two other methyl groups they mentioned were folic acid and Bl2. It also said that it is active in regenerating connective tissue. I think I told you about my brother starting what I called CNS twitching, my sister-in-law motioning me into another room and telling me that the oncology doctors at VUH saying it meant metastases to the brain and he didn't have as much chance as a snowball, you know where. After saying bull, I'll be back in a few, I went to the drug store and purchased that methyl group called folic acid to add to his macro vitamin/minerals we already had him on, and got rid of the CNS twitches in a few days. So just maybe old methyl group MSM can also regenerate neuron pathways in the spinal cord too.

Yesterday was the appt with the Neurosurgeon. He said Ronnie's neck is healing good, but that alot of bone still needs to grow at the graft site. That usually takes 4-5 months to complete. He also said that the "electric buzz" feeling that Ronnie has when he hits a bump in the sidewalk, is in fact, the nerve pathways healing, trying to make connections. That is good news, for sure...

Pills Vs Powder

Posted by Koekoe (South Africa, North West) on 05/19/2013

Just want to say that I get the same results with the MSM pills as with the powder. The pills definitely work as well.

Posted by Angel (Brooklyn, Newyork Newyork) on 03/26/2012

Let me let all of you know that some pills or capsules have added stuff to them like fills and floaters (not to say its only in pills or capsules) things like that in them so I advise everyone to try taking opti-msm flake its pure its in a crystal form and which is its original form but crushed into a powder form so you could drink it. My only side effect with it is sleepiness which now I found out from reading someone's post that you shouldn't take it after 2 pm or you will experience sleepiness but I still do cause it's not much of a problem.

To test if the powder is real with no fillers or floaters all you have to do is take a glass cup (a clear one of course) and put (WARM WATER) into the cup and put 1/2 teaspoon of msm(or two 1/2 teaspoons if you want to be sure) into the cup and stir with a clean spoon after it dissolves in the glass cup of water it should be clear as if you never put anything into the glass cup (NOTE:give the water a little time to settle after you stir) if you happen to notice a fog or floaters in it (DON'T TAKE IT call and get your money back cause your not getting it from professionals that actually want you to have the real thing they only care about money jerks) I advise you to get it from another supplier that knows about msm.

I have had Psoriatic Arthritis since I was 10 years old, & one of the worst symptoms I've had for 38 yrs now, is daily shooting nerve pains in my extremities. The good news: when I take 1000 mgs of MSM daily, the shooting pains are completely gone. If I miss a few days, they always start up again. Love this site.

I've found relief after two days of 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day of MSM in water or juice for a chronic shoulder problem. It would ache sitting here at the comp. Desk, lying in bed, cooking, doing dishes and driving, even walking around. Constant irritation, now gone. I'm so excited about this stuff.

I had a bad shoulder pain in the joint. My elbow throbbed and my last three fingers were numb. I saw the Dr. I got a shot in the joint of the shoulder and after a couple of months I still hurt. I bought some MSM and took 4000 milligrams that morning, by afternoon it had stopped hurting. My fingers are no longer numb. I have copd and it has helped my breathing. I had a pulse ox of 90 sitting down and I noticed my pulse ox is 97 now. I find I can walk further. I have been on msm a month. I am so thankful for msm.

MSM caused anxiety-- I'm glad to see i'm not the only one. I took some organic MSM and that stuff made me sooooo nervous, rapid heart beat and my nerves felt "fried". This stuff grabbed a hold of me and wouldnt let go. I remembered I took this stuff and stopped. This happened twice. Now i know it was the MSM. I even took some prescription anti anxiety med and the feeling would not go away.

Folks, you have got to understand what detox is. A detox can do all sorts of strange things, until it runs its course. The best thing may be to go slow in the beginning. I highly doubt there could be a true allergic reaction to pure MSM. Because, it is in pretty much every cell in your body, and in pretty much every living thing on the planet. It is a very important nutrient. If you are allergic to it, you would be allergic to your own body.

Troy, I am sure everyone understands what detox is. But when your 48 yr old husband whom you love more than life itself wakes up in the middle of the night with a heart jumping out of control after taking msm for 2 days, detox is the last thing on your mind!!! My hubby had already made 2 trips to the ER with rapid heartbeat a couple years ago. These symptoms decreased to almost zero with the addition of magnesium, co-q-10 and L-carnitine to his daily diet, but is now truly down to zero after adding d-3, k-2, quercetin and milk thistle. Yay!! Then last night, he had another episode thing with the heart pounding. I also had severe head pain and EXCESSIVE thirst, even though I drink tons of water. We are stopping this msm after only 2 days. He doesn't need it bad enough to experience heart problems, and try to work through a "detox". I need HIM around more than he needs msm! To encourage someone to stay on something that is causing serious side effects is simply dangerous advise in my opinion! Arthritic and joint pain can be treated with Hyaluronic Acid, which is what we are doing. Husband just wanted to add the msm to see if the results would be even greater, so that's why we added it to our mix. Not anymore, though! I'm throwing out that big bag of white powder today!

It's interesting that you mentioned D3, because as I was reading over all these warnings, I was thinking how they're saying now that the majority of us are deficient in Vitamin D. And it makes sense, given the fear that's been instilled in us about the sun, how we wear all this sunscreen crap, always under the cover of a house, workplace or vehicle. And all these years drinking pasteurized milk that was supposed to be covering a chunk of our Vitamin D needs, and it's not even the right type of D. And then telling us that 400 I. U. Was all we needed.

NOW they're finally admitting that we need a lot more than that. And that the lack of this vitamin is likely the cause of many of our major ills. Vitamin D, our bodies need it for so many things--calcium. Imagine all the calcium running around in our bodies with no place to go 'cause the body can't use it without proper amounts of Vitamin D3.

So I'm now wondering how many of our freaky reactions and allergies and ill-health conditions will be alleviated once we toss the sunscreen and start taking large doses of Vitamin D3. I was watching a naturopath's youtube and she was saying she routinely starts her patients out on 5000 I. U. Daily without even testing because she's seen that most people are deficient. If someone is dealing with health issues (who isn't?) supplementing with less than that is likely going to have an insignificant effect. She says with those who have very low levels (probably a big percentage of us), she starts them out on 10,000 I.U. For a few months, then lowers that amount. Sunshine, hmm, we actually need it. Go figure ;)

Canberra, Australia

Some years ago, a scientist announced that worldwide people are Vitamin D deficient, even those who are working in the sun. What he said was so controversial that he has been shut down. Cannot find his work anywhere and sadly didn't write down his name but am sure he was Scandinavian. I think he said that there is a change in our Sun.

I recently bought powdered MSM for a sports knee injury. The pain in my knee literally went away overnight after the first dose on MSM. I got excited and doubled the dose for the next 5 days. At that same time, I started to have anxiety attacks when I lay down to sleep. It felt as though my lungs weren't getting enough oxygen and I started to get paranoid that I was going to stop breathing during the night! My chest felt as though it had an enormous amount of pressure on it. After a few days of this, I realized it had to be the MSM and stopped taking it. My breathing issues went away 48 hours after stopping the MSM. In the future I will take much less of this!

So many of us are oblivious that we are carrying around unwanted house guests. Parasites are a huge but little known and even less understood issue.

Unless we have a large parasite burden we may be completely unaware of their presence, but they may well be a, if not the cause of our health issues.

As they are generally more active at night, they are very capable of triggering anxiety. Taking MSM helps to deal with them, but can trigger frantic activity initially until they are dealt with.

Until my burden became great enough that they finally manifested I was oblivious to the fact that they have been the root cause of my health issues over the last 40 years. Now the MSM is getting to grips with them, they are triggering insomnia and anxiety, but I have confidence that it will eventually stop.

I am not 'allergic' to the MSM but I am very 'allergic' to the effect it's having on my unwanted lodgers!

Better But With Side Effects

I have used msm for 8 months for pigmentation. At first I had many symptoms of an adverse reaction such as lethargy, headaches, diarrhea and felt dizzy constantly. I also had gradually increased the dose over a couple of weeks. After a couple of months I could no longer stand it and stopped taking it. I eventually started taking it again after I stopped drinking Alcohol and coffee for a couple of months and began eating a lot of fresh veges and fruit. I also changed the brand of msm to a pure crystal form (100% crown msm). To my surprise I have had absolutely no reaction this time and am taking up to 12 mgs daily. My pigmentation is slowly breaking up and fading slightly. It has reduced my pigmentation by approximately 30% (It covered most of my face).
