My dad has been struggling w/ three diseases which are associated w/ aging ---muscle loss, memory or mental decline, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. And of course chronic fatigue is a byproduct of these conditions.

The IBD has been a real challenge as it also includes Diverticulosis. Treatment w/ natural remedies have been only moderately effective and temporary. An attempt w/ Comfrey Root proved too toxic on only the second dose. The Master Cleanse has also proved helpful, but again, only temporary. Rummaging about and looking for anything, in desperation, stumbled upon a container of Glutamine which had not been used in awhile. At approx. 3-5 grms daily all three conditions have greatly improved in as little as one week time, and continue. The results were so pronounced that I simply had to report for anyone suffering from age related issues.

I am a 61 yo female who has stayed as natural as possible most of my life. I tend to have a lot of allergies to conventional medications as well as certain herbal products and sensitive even to many natural supplements. So when I am going to try something, I try to research a lot before I try it.

For the past several years I have had rectal prolapse and toenail fungus issues that have gotten worse over time. I did start doing some exercises that helped the prolapse somewhat but not enough to be excited about. Like many others, I have spent a small fortune with doctors and health practitioners trying to find a way to correct the problems. Even MSM did not help nor did colon implants using aloe and essential oils (I am very sensitive to many oils). I would have bleeding problems that got frustrating.

Recently I started using some L-Taurine and L-Tyrosine to help with stress and adrenal problems and they have helped a lot more than other natural things I have tried. Then I stumbled across information on L-Glutamine being really good for digestion and intestinal problems. I had used it some in the past, but it was many years ago. So I got some at a health store last week and started with 500 mg powder the first day and increased by about 500 mg per day until I am up to 2500 mg today. My prolapse issue has already improved so much that I am amazed! Nothing else has worked and I have tried pretty much everything! I had gotten some sea sponges and tampons to use on days when I want to be more active and not have to worry about it but I am already so much better than I may never have to use those again! It is pretty incredible and I plan to discontinue the cream that my doctor had given me for the nail fungus and see if the L-Glutamine will help that as well.

It would sure be nice not to have to keep spending money on things that don't help and to actually be using something that takes care of the problems!

I recently had a flare of UC, got home from hospital feeling about 50%, kept taking the steroids (50mg), salofalk (2 grams), colifoam twice a day and wasn't seeing any improvement... so, after doing some research I added 5mg 3 times a day of L-Glutamine to my routine 30 minutes before meals and saw improvement almost immediately. I'd say I'm 90% to remission and I've only been taking the stuff for a week. I haven't felt this good in 2 years.

I also take a probiotic once a day, 5mg metamucil at dinner and 25mg aloe juice first thing in the morning, but I've been taking those for awhile and although they help, I don't believe they resonsible for this major improvement.

It should be noted that my UC is so bad that traditional medicine has not been effective at keeping me in remission and my doctor said if I have another flare I have to have surgery. L-Glutamine may just save me yet.

Just wanted to follow up... Today is day 7 and I am still having improvement! This is fantastic. I'm between 2500 to 3000 mg per day.

All I can say is if you think it can help you, to research and see if it is something you want to try. It has been worth it for me!

L-Glutamine (high dose): Upon the suggestion of a nutritionist I went to see, she claimed she didn't have a single ulcerative colitis patient to a L-glutamine. The one she gave me has a high dose of L-Glutamine along with other herbs like Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root and not much else (sorry I don't have a bottle here). It's a powder you mix with water every morning 1/2 hour before you eat anything and you need to do this for 3-5 weeks before you see results. And let me tell you I was shocked in 3w when it finally went away after over a year of daily attacks.

The premise of how it works is that when you have impaired digestion, your body doesn't break down proteins efficiently causing you to become deficient in amino acids. L-Glutamine is the amino acid necessary for rebuilding you intestinal wall which sheds itself every 5 days or so? and without that amino acid becomes damaged. By giving yourself pure form, in liquid (requiring no digestion of pills etc) you give your intestines what it needs to make a healthy lining. It was really mad at the time that something so simple recommended by a nutritionist of all people cured my colitis when I had spent huge $$$ seeing naturopathic Dr's, chinese herbalists and acupuncturists, some of which helped temporarily but the L-glutamine was the magic ticket for me.

It took a lot longer for my digestion to return to normal but the L-glutamine totally took care of my diarrhea, spasms and bleeding in 3w of faithfully drinking it every morning.

I just wanted to mention to be wary of psyllium fiber. The first ND I tried gave me a supplement so close to the one that worked but it made me worse and I know now that I can't take psyllium fiber AT ALL, but I can handle the flax fiber in this drink. And I also discovered that multi-vitamins cause me to bleed. I can only take whole food vitamins. Two things you might want to watch out for.

I too suffered from ulcers for years. I got down to 105 pounds because the pain associated with eating was so bad. None of the prescriptions from my doctor helped. Finally out of desperation I decided to go the natural route (now that is my first choice, not last). My research revealed that 90% of ulcers are caused by a bacteria called H pylori. If you don't kill the bacteria, the ulcer lives on. Antibiotics can kill it, but as many testify here, apple cider vinegar ended ulcer symptoms. That is because ACV is antibacterial. Colloidal silver, iodine, peroxide and other natural antibacterials are also effective. You can take antacids like Nexium, Tums, etc for years and it will do NOTHING for your ulcer except maybe offer slight relief temporarily... But backlashes later when your body notices the lack of stomach acid and so produces even more. Doctors know about hpylori, and realize it is the cause of ulcers, as well as acid reflux and a host of other digestive problems. Some will prescribe antibiotics which can kill the bacteria, but most continue to support the pharmaceutical industry by over prescribing useless antacids like Prilosec, Nexium, etc. They also prescribe dangerous proton pump inhibitor drugs. The list of health issues from these antacids grows daily, including hair loss low energy, extreme fatigue, heart issues, and B12 deficiency.

I've been pretty impressed by the results of L Glutamine. When I am feeling out of sorts.. Dark eye circles, concentration problems, anxious, I have found a good tablespoon of this (powder) in a glass of water can really help normalize my state. I am not exactly sure how it is working in my system but I suspect it has to do with my intestinal health and immunity. The Leaky Gut theory seems to be gaining credibility and this may be a remedy for it.. I am a firm believer in taking a break from supplement or only taking them when you feel a need and this is one I like to have around.

I go to Dr. Frackelton in Westlake, Ohio for cancer prevention. (I already had it once) I have suffered from spastic colon off and on for years. I was really in pain one time when I went for my routine blood work and mentioned it to him. He said, "I know what will fix you up right now. " He told me to take 1 tsp of l-glutamine 3 times a day. I had been suffering with this for 4 weeks. I had already gone to my regular doctor who prescribed a medicine that did give me some relief from the pain. I quit taking that medicine the day before I went to see Dr. Frackelton. I took the l-glutamine later after I got home. I was taking my third teaspoon of it when I realized that I was fine!!! It worked that fast. When Dr. Frackelton told me it would fix me up right now, he was right! The l-glutamine really worked. I hope this helps someone.

I have had a few bouts w/ alcoholism myself. I've found the following to be helpful: L-glutamine (an amino acid) [already mentioned], Kudzu (an herb), grapes or grape juice, B complex vitamins [already mentioned], & magnesium - use as directed by what the supplement bottle(s) says. As far as I know, it's safe to combine any & all of the above supplements. There may be others not mentioned here, but I think these are worth mentioning. Hope this helps.

I had an ulcer and was prescribed Nexium. The side effects were worse then the masked symptoms, so I never finished a full 8-week coarse and battled with the ulcer for 5 months.Finally I went searching for a natural cure, found Earth Clinic and decided to try a combination of things with a twist.

I started drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (2 Tbsp) in about 2 cups of water with a 1/4 tsp. of baking soda. I drank that 3 times a day in the beginning. I also took 500mg of cayenne in a capsule 3 x a day and 500mg of glutamine 3x a day (also in a capsule form). I stopped all prescribed medications and only took an occasional TUM's when I felt I needed some extra relief.

After 1 week I was greatly relieved with only occasional flare ups but nothing that couldn't be helped with the ACV and baking soda. The glutamine is what is the active ingredient in cabbage juice which is also helpful for an ulcer, but it's hard to drink 4 cups of raw cabbage juice a day so I went for the capsules. At three weeks I was 90% there, at 5 weeks 100% better. I also think it is important to cut out all caffeine and alcohol during your healing period.

I hope that those of you suffering find some relief like I did, and thank you to all of the Earth Clinic contributors for sharing your information.

I tried L-Glutamine after complete colon cleanse and Candida treatment. Insomnia was one of the symptoms that surprisingly disappeared. While L-Glutamine is an amino acid, and supports the body in many ways, I learned through this experience (and the guidance of a very good Holistic Chiropractor) that when this amino acid is first introduced into the body, the colon just loves it, and sucks it up. As the mucous membranes of the colon are regenerated, insomnia is one of the symptoms that fall to the wayside. I did use the L-Glutamine after a round of the candida treatment, which irradicates an overgrowth of Candida and helps to balance the pH levels of the colon and body. There is also product called HGH at night, which is rich in L-Glutamine, but this is not the original source that I took. I originally took a powder form, about 1,500 mcg. daily, first thing in the morning, as it is loaded with protein and jump starts the metabolism.

Can I have your permission to repost your post on another site? Some people struggle with muscle destruction as a result of statin use (more than you think) and might benefit from this information. Statin use is also frequently linked to memory problems, so this may help both.

I am particularly sensitive to foods with high free glutamate content whether it be MSG or any other form and I feel great when taking L-Glutamine.

I see this was posted 5 years ago so I'm sure or I hope by now you have been cured of your gastritis but wanted to tell you what helped me. Mine was caused by antibiotics as well for giardia and drinking kefir daily 3 glasses a day for a few weeks got rid of the gastritis. I hope this helps you or anyone else!

This is Rooster from Fla. I have been battling ulcers for 10 months. 5 days ago I started the cayenne pepper and glutamine 500mg of both 3 times a day before meals 5 days and the result is incredible. Still having a few aches and pains after meals and first thing in the morning, but no more blood and vomit and laying in the bed with pain. What a great web site I am so much better thanks to Ya'll gracious, Rooster

A natural doctor recommended the powdered supplement l-glutamine for my IBS. He said to take 5g (1 teaspoon) twice a day with juice or water but don't take it with protein at the same time because it will lesson the effect. It works! I have had far fewer attacks. It is inexpensive and easy to find because weightlifters also use it for muscle building benefits.

@Rsw: By all means YES on the repost. In addition to Glutamine (in the amino acid category) Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) as well as Creatine may also be indicated for muscle fuel. High dose CoQ10 or Ubiquinol is also recommended. I would also give an alert to Dr Sinatra's recommendation to lower the statin dose as much or more than half, and I believe he also recommends Niacin in combo with the statins. Dr Sinatra has two excellent books on heart health as well as a YouTube channel.

I've been experiencing gastritis for about nine months. This was brought on after persistent giardia and antibiotics. Glutamine and olive leaf extract both help, and recently I've found that pine nut oil is helpful too. None of these have cured me of my problem but all have helped. I'm going to try Cayenne, ACV and Aloe Vera now that I've found this site.
