BHT does slow down aging. I ran out of BHT about 1 month ago and can see and feel the difference in how rapidly I am aging. I am now 68 years old. And as you get older the aging process speeds up as all of us elderly people know all too well.

It has been proven many times over that BHT extends the freshness of all foods greatly. Also products such as tires and other rubber products. Also fuels such as gasoline. Myself and many others believe this is the result of BHT`s ability to squelch free radical reactions. It does so by adding a hydrogen atom to a free radical such as OH. and H. that both occur when water is split. I believe that when BHT emits hydrogen atoms it does so in pairs. If this was not true the BHT molecules would become free radicals. So when BHT emits 2 hydrogen atoms closest to each other on the BHT molecule a carbon to carbon bond occurs between those carbons, satisfing the octet rule resulting in a stable molecule.

That BHT is an excellent preservative in non-living substances is NOT in question. BHT`s ability to do so in living organisms is still debated.

I will close this posting by stating that even though the BHT available for sale is made artificially, it is EXACTLY the same compound found in nature so to speak. In fresh water algae, salt water plants that occur along the shores. A growing number of such plants continue to be found.

In my opinion: BHT does slow down aging in the way I just described. I just ordered some BHT. I will try hard to never run out again.

How to Take BHT
Posted by Bill (Philippines) on 03/08/2023
★★★★★

There seems to be some confusion on how to supplement BHT. In my own humble opinion, it is not very wise or useful to take BHT with food. Yes, its fair enough that eaten food has oils and fats that BHT can dissolve in, but unfortunately if you take BHT with food then less BHT will actually be directly absorbed into the blood because it has been all mixed up with the food and ends up competing with the food for absorption into the body. That's why I always orally take between 250mgs - 500mgs BHT once a day(usually first thing in the morning outside mealtimes) in combination with just a tablespoon off virgin coconut oil(VCO), which contains at least 50% lauric acid(a saturated fat) that gets chemically converted in the body to the more useful and active monolaurin form. Alot of people are also totally unaware that VCO also contains many other very useful anti-bacterial, antifungal and anti-viral saturated fats like capric acid, caproic acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid etc.

MCTs are also referred to as "saturated fats" because all their carbon bonds are strong double bonds(i.e. saturated) which means that such oils will not easily breakdown into trans fats during high heat cooking or in the sunlight as will "polyunsaturated fats". The term "polyunsaturated fat" means that all bonds in the veg oil molecules are only single bonds that are relatively weak. This means that whenever you heat any polyunsaturated oil or margarine to high heat or expose it to sunlight for a while then trans fats will easily be formed. And trans fats are well-known to be carcinogenic. And as far as I'm concerned all vegetable oils are unnatural, chemically-processed, dead oils that also contain dangerous trans fats.

The above method of supplementing BHT with VCO is also recommended by Steven Fowkes who has done much useful research on BHT and who also occasionally posts on EarthClinic. He also recommends that BHT is mixed with coconut oil and taken outside meal times. You can download Steve's book -- The BHT Book -- from this link:

The BHT Book by S. Fowkes

Another notable advantage of mixing your BHT dosage with a tablespoon of VCO is that the type of oils in VCO are referred to as Medium Chain Triglycerides(MCTs) which are saturated oils whereas vegetable oils(or polyunsaturated oils) are referred to as Long Chain Triglycerides(LCTs) -- whose molecules are longer and bigger than MCTs. And because MCTs have smaller molecules they can be easily and directly absorbed into the blood via the hepatic artery where they are transported directly to the liver for liver protection and for storage of MCTs as glycogen(liver energy store released as ketone bodies whenever needed). But LCTs -- because they are longer, larger molecules -- can only be absorbed directly into the lymph channels of the body from the intestines.

I also avoid using all vegetable oils and margarine whenever I can. I've always preferred using saturated fats and real butter with my food. It was the book -- The Mediterranean Diet by Ancel Keyes -- that originally kicked off everyone switching from using saturated fats to using polyunsaturated fats or veg oils/margarine even though his research and his recommendations were all about Olive Oil - a monounsaturated veg oil -- not about vegetable oils, which are polyunsaturated oils.

It was over 15 years ago when I read a useful piece of research by Dr Denham Harman, who fed one group of mice Corn + Canola Oil and fed another group of mice just Corn alone until they died. He found that 45% of the Corn + Canola Oil mice group had cancer. A large number of the female mice had uterine cancer and the male mice had prostate cancer. The Corn only group(no Canola oil) did not have such a preponderance of cancer. Here is some mo4re interesting research by Denham Harman:

Effects of the Antioxidant Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) on Mortality in BALB/c Mice(1979)

Prolongation of life: Role of Free Radical Ractions in Aging(1969)

Chemical Protection Against Aging(1969)

Free Radical Theory of Aging: Inhibition of Amyloidosis in Mice by Antioxidants; Possible Mechanis(1976)

Lastly, I've been taking BHT + 1 tbspn VCO for over 5 years now at either 250mgs per day or 500mgs per day without problems or side-effects. I always take BHT with VCO as a preventative against dementia, as an anti-viral(covid-19 et al) and as a powerful oil-soluble anti-oxidant.

Interestingly, Dr Denham Harman only died just recently. He died at the ripe old age of 98.

BHT and Coconut Oil

Dear Daniela [ California ], Why not at least give the much lower dose BHT treatment I have discussed here so VERY many times now a try?

In my opinion: BHT taken with water only on an empty stomach is MUCH more effective than mixing BHT in ANY and ALL OILS. Also: 2,000mg per day is way TOO much BHT. BHT is not safe at such large doses.

I don`t know how much you weigh. The dosage I have discussed is 250mg of BHT per day for people who weigh 125 pounds or less. For those who weigh 150 pounds or more a second dose of 250mg of BHT MIGHT be required. Also: Any time adverse reactions occur LOWER the amount of BHT used.

Why not at least TRY the BHT with water only on an empty stomach method a try at the much lower doses I have discussed? That is what worked for me and others....Oscar

Vitamin Research Products is no longer selling BHT. They are under new management and have discontinued several products, and switched other product's formulations without notice. If you are reacting to an encapsulated BHT product, try buying BHT in bulk. It's cheaper, and if you dislike the taste, you can put it into capsules knowing that there are no excipients, fillers, anti-caking agents or flow facilitators.

WARNING

BHT sold by 'Wholesale Nutrition ' is CRAP. It lists: cellulose [ some cheap filler ] magnesium steorote, and silicon dioxide as " other ingredients".

Do not buy or use this product. It is a mixture and NOT pure BHT. I opened a capsule to taste it. It tastes like BHT but is powdery as opposed to crystals. This is NOT pure BHT and contains other compounds and says so on it`s bottle. As far as I know cellulose is some cheap filler.

Stick with the pure BHT products sold by VRP and LifeLinks and maybe some others. I bought this by way of AMAZON. What a disappointment....Oscar

BHT and Coconut Oil

I have been using BHT dissolved in coconut oil for years. I use the refined coconut oil exclusively because the traces of water, minerals and proteins in the raw coconut oil are catalysts for oxidation reactions and will shorten its shelf life. I use it primarily for topical applications (10% by weight, up to 15% by weight in warm climates) because I have good bile and can absorb oral BHT efficiently without need for pre-dissolving it. But if you are missing your gall bladder, have problems with higher-fat diets and difficulty absorbing fat-soluble nutrients, or just do not get good results with BHT in capsules or crystals, there is no reason why you couldn't use coconut oil to take oral BHT. I prefer it because of its low level of unsaturation. I even brush my teeth with it.

BHT Brands to Avoid
Posted by Bill (Philippines) on 06/11/2022

Just to add that living in the Philippines does have certain distinct advantages. I always buy my supplements as pure powders from online retailers whenever I can -- as SW Fowkes recommends -- which is much better than buying those shiny, hard pills or capsules which always seem to contain unwanted anti-caking agents and which always costs more than pure powders for sure. For instance, using the Lazada website, I can buy 1 kilogram of food grade BHT powder for only $11.77 direct from a chemical company.

My own antiviral strategy is really quite simple and is the same as Ted's strategy -- always use a supplement like lysine and/or use Ted's alkalizing remedies to help stop the viral replication in the body while, at the same time, taking the recommended doses, at regular intervals, of either aspirin, methylene blue, BHT or Hydrogen Peroxide to rapidly kill-off the virus in the blood.

Here is a link to an EC post by Ted, which has the heading:"The One Hour Flu Cure." where Ted describes, in detail, how to use most of the protocols I've mentioned here to rapidly cure viral problems -- just look for Ted's post on the page(it's the fourth post down I think):

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/flu8.html

For myself, I've also successfully used the lysine, aspirin and BHT protocols at various times -- as recommended by Ted, who has used them against various serious viral problems, including SARS(2003), H1N1(2009), HSV, Hep C, Dengue and the Chikungunya virus. I've also used his protocols against the COVID19 virus.

Just to finally add that SW Fowkes book on BHT -- The BHT Book -- is really a must read if you want to learn all about BHT. I also take my BHT in a similar way as recommended by SW Fowkes -- I first dissolve the BHT dose in VCO(Virgin Coconut Oil) and take it like that. The other book that is a must read, in my humble opinion, is The Ultimate Guide to Methylene Blue by Mark Sloan.

And here is a very informative article by Dr Deepak Golwalkar, a well-known pulmonologist currently working in India, who has been using nebulized and sublingual low dose methylene blue(0.1%) for a long time to help cure pneumonia in the lungs and now uses it to help cure COVID-19 in his patients as well:

However, after I recently extensively researched the topic for Earth Clinic (see our newly revised BHT article if you haven't yet), I was floored and decided to test it for antiaging. I'm only on week two at 180 mg a day, but it's going very well. Tons of energy and very focused.

Zika Virus
Posted by Oscar (Syracuse, New York) on 05/13/2016

The Zika virus like so many other viruses appears to have a lipid coating. And because BHT has been shown to be an effective treatment for so many lipid coated viruses it does seem worth a try for the zika virus. Importantly what BHT can treat it can also prevent if taken on a daily basis.

Based on my experience with BHT as a treatment for hepatitis C the recommended dosage is one 250mg capsule of BHT taken with water on an empty stomach for people who weigh about 125 pounds. For people who weigh 175 to 200 pounds the dosage is 500mg. For people who weigh more than 200 pounds another 250mg of BHT per day may be helpful.

This dosage range is tricky. Most people are OK with that dosage range. Some people do not tolerate BHT well but most people do.

Because there are NO OTHER treatments or preventive supplements available at this time: BHT does seem worth a try. BHT does work for MANY lipid coated viruses for many but not all people.

Late Stage Cirrhosis

The father of a client had a late-stage cirrhosis diagnosis and had been given 6 weeks to live. His HepC titer was very elevated, too. When the son emailed me his father's medical records, he included one page that the doctor's had not mentioned to the family, a ferritin measurement of 1300 (about 3-4 times normal). The father had hemochromatosis. He went on BHT and his HepC titer halved in one week and halved again in the second week. But it was aggressive blood letting (1 cup per week) that made the biggest difference in his liver status.

When asked why they didn't mention the severely elevated ferritin, the doctors said that he'd be dead in 6 weeks anyway, so it wasn't important.

Years later, the father now plays the best golf of his life. His ferritin is normal, his TIBC is high, and his HepC titers remain low.

This is a reason to always maintain some degree of doubt regarding any medical diagnosis, and the quality of the information related by your medical practitioners.

BHT as Anti-Viral
Posted by Oscar (Syracuse, New York) on 07/04/2015

This is my concept on exactly how BHT works. It is my hope that by understanding the fairly simple concepts and principles I discuss people who are interested in the BHT treatment can best use it.

I wish to start with the images provided by wikipedia of the ways in which lipids arrange themselves in water here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipid_bilayer

The reasons why these arrangements occur are discussed at the above link. The lipids that encase the different lipid coated viruses also are embedded with certain protein structures that are involved in the infection processes. It is enough to know that for the purposes of this discussion.

So if you can strip away the different lipid coatings the different viruses can no longer infect uninfected cells. Also the natural processes involved in recognizing and destroying the RNA and DNA of said viruses take over and occur.

It is my proposal that the metabolites of BHT are the right size. Small enough to penetrate but large enough to readily disrupt said lipid coatings. Also and importantly said metabolites of BHT are compelled to move about very rapidly because the metabolites of BHT discussed in the different WHO BHT toxicology reports have [ O-H ] groups occur in those tert-butyl groups. When oxygen is bonded to hydrogen a PARTIAL ELECTRICAL CHARGE at both the hydrogen atom [ a partial positive charge ] and a [ partial negative charge ] on that oxygen atom. The very same forces that make water a dipolar liquid.

And, very importantly: Those BHT metabolites though somewhat water soluble because of those [ O-H ] groups are still VERY lipophyllic [ lipid seekers ].

To work, to destroy those lipid coated viruses, those BHT metabolites must both readily seek out those lipid coated viruses and then still be small enough to penetrate said viral coatings. If you screw up that process you degrade the BHT treatment.

IMPORTANT: BHT is power stuff. Careful dosing is required. For people who weigh 125 pounds or less use only 250mg of BHT per day or LESS. For people who weigh up to 200 pounds 500mg per day is the recommended dosage. For people who weigh more than 200 pounds some more BHT may be required. And those are ONLY rough guidelines. Age, fat content of a person`s weight are factors.

My rule is: If adverse reactions to BHT occur, LOWER the dosage used. MORE is NOT better. You have to find out what is the right amount for you. And even that can change especially for people over 50 and very lean people.

I try very hard to explain all this as best I can. But if you choose try this treatment always lower the amount of BHT used if adverse reactions occur....Oscar

"Hi Oscar, do you know of anyone that has tried a combination of coconut oil and bht? The coconut oil dissolves the lipid coating of viruses. Then the bht may be more effective. I have read about a study done in the Philippines in which coconut oil got rid of hiv virus."

Dear Shawn from Florida: I am not sure of how best to respond to your question. This is because I only used the BHT with water on an empty stomach method. I had such a spectacular response using this method to treat my hepatitis C infection I saw no reason for mixing BHT with any oil or anything else.

In only 4 weeks on the BHT with water only on an empty stomach I went from being seriously sick with all the usual symptoms of a failing liver: yellow eyes, dark urine, inability to digest most foods to normal liver function and NO VIRUS DETECTED. I started with only 200mg of BHT per day and quickly ramped up to 400mg to 600mg of BHT per day. I was using 200mg of BHT capsules.

This was back in early 1997. I know of NO drug or compound that has ever been shown to produce better results than that.

You asked me if I knew of people who achieved as good or better results mixing BHT with coconut oil. My answer is NO. They may be out there but I do not know of them.

From the extensive research I have done it appears to me that once BHT is dissolved in coconut oil the way it is digested and metabolized differs from the way BHT is metabolized when taken with water only on an empty stomach. The with water only method results in altered forms of BHT interring the bloodstream from the intestines and even the mouth itself if you chew the BHT crystals. With the BHT dissolved in oil mixture it seems to me that BHT is picked up by structures called lipoproteins and distributed in that way to the different cells. In my opinion this defeats the purpose. It makes it so that BHT and it`s metabolites are NOT readily drawn to those viral lipid coatings and the viruses so coated in the bloodstream.

There are people who disagree with me. I have given you my opinion....Oscar

EBV, Herpes
Posted by Swfowkes (Cupertino, California) on 01/23/2018 46 posts

Angie, you cannot get rid of lipid-enveloped viruses like herpes and EBV. They stay with you for the rest of your life. The average person has more herpes genomes in their body when they die than human genomes.

We live with viruses. Everybody lives with viruses all the time. Some people have flare-ups and others not. The trick is to change from somebody with flare-ups to somebody without flare ups. Some people have chronic viral load, and the trick is to make your virus dormant, so it just sits there, inactive.

So the answer to your question is that the switch from being troubled by viruses to not being troubled is not a matter of time. It's a matter of decreasing your viral susceptibility and encouraging viruses to become less virulent. BHT might help you do that. And vitamin A, selenium, sunlight, St. John's wort and hydrogen peroxide might help you as well.

The art of the matter is figuring out why each of use has viral susceptibility. For some, it could be estrogen dominance. For others, heavy metal toxicity. Leaky gut syndrome. Hypothyroidism. There are many ways that aerobic metabolism (energy production) can wane in us. Use of drugs, living in a toxic environment, eating the wrong foods, being unhappy, feeling helpless--it spans the gamut from the physiological to the psychological.

The Revici model of metabolic balance puts viral susceptibility at one extreme, either anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline dominance or catabolic-aerobic-acidic deficit. You can read about this in the BHT Book, a free PDF download from www.projectwellbeing.com/steve.

I'm pretty sure that Ayurvedic theory has its own constitutional types that pose increased and decreased susceptibility to viruses. Likely traditional Chinese medicine as well. Maybe somebody can also weigh in on homeopathic approaches to energy balance.

I have little expertise in Ayurveda and TCM. But can talk about BHT and other antiviral vitamins, minerals, nutrients, foods, etc. I hope this does not discourage you from trying to figure out why you have chronic EBV or periodic herpes flare-ups.

I do not understand why monolaurin is not included in the list of products for use against covid. I have been taking 9gm per day for the last year. It strips the lipid envelope of viruses in much the same way as bht. I don't know if one is better than the other or not.

When I began taking it, the Herx reaction was brutal, and I had to stop. After I recovered, I re-started, but increased the daily amount more slowly. I still had a bad reaction. Finally, I took just one pellet and increased by one pellet per day, until I reached the 9mg level. That is three scoops of the brand I use. I choose to work up to that amount simply because it seems to be the maximum dose among people who use it.

Hi. I don't have hep C or any health problems but I have been intrigued by all the BHT posts and thought I would try it for its antioxidant properties.

It's been 4 weeks since I started taking one 350 mg cap first thing in the morning either with water or ACV. I knew it was working because right away I broke out in small pimples and my skin got "greasy" and more oily than usual. This is what happens to me when I first start fasting, so I knew I was detoxing. Everything went back to normal after a week and now my skin is REALLY nice and soft and getting better everyday. The rough soles of my feet started to peel off (how weird! ) and so did the rough dark patches on my elbows. My skin also smells nice, almost like that of a baby!

The most shocking thing is my digestion. For years I have been emptying by bowels twice a day (with this "urgent" feeling) and suffered from extreme gas no matter what I ate. The gas is now COMPLETELY gone, and although I'm only going to the bathroom now every other day that is completely fine by me because the cleanup is not messy and I don't feel constipated at all... and I eat extremely healthy (vegetarian with lots of raw foods and the occasional fish, nothing fried, lots of brown rice, no processed food, etc).

Just thought I would share. This has been such an interesting and unexpected discovery to me! Take care everyone and good luck!

I can second Lisa's reply. BHT is extremely effective for shingles and can cause pain reduction in hours when used topically.

If you have shingles and want to test this, apply 10-15% BHT by weight dissolved in refined coconut oil (the most stable preparation, shelf-life-wise) to only one side and leave the shingles on the other side untreated. The untreated side is then a control. The BHT from the treated side will distribute to the other side (and through the palm of your hand in applying the BHT/oil solution), but it will take sufficient time for you to see a blatant difference.

I disagree with Oscar on the B12 issue. The synergy between BHT and B12 was independently conformed by Ward Dean decades ago. BHT is lipid-soluble, B12 is water-soluble, so they work in different compartments in different ways. But both are classified as antiviral (catabolic, aerobic, acidifying) by Emanuel Revici's metabolic schema.

I had a shingles outbreak in my 40s due to allergic/toxic exposure to urethane adhesive. Trigeminal outbreak, two of three nerve paths, which responded quickly to BHT and B12. At 24 hours, the redness was dramatically reduced. By 48 hours, it was almost natural skin color. BTW, my outbreak was highly atypical in not being in any way painful. No pain, no itching, no neuropathy, only skin lesions. I had natural chicken pox as a child, so this outbreak was likely shingles. It was diagnosed as shingles by visual inspection by MD. And no shingles outbreaks since despite 25-30 years of aging.

Hi Alize,

I've been doing the following with the product you just ordered from Earth Clinic:

NOT letting the small included scoop touch my mouth, I pour three 90 mg scoops (the scoop is tiny) into my mouth and immediately drink water to wash the BHT crystals down. So easy, and the BHT crystals are tasteless. As mentioned above in the Editorial Comments section of your post, it's best to take BHT on an empty stomach, according to Oscar, who frequently posted on Earth Clinic about BHT until 2017. You can add a bit of fat to it, but I don't. Been doing this method for years, and it works very well.

I don't take any other supplements for a few hours after taking the BHT and I always take it on an empty stomach.

Note: 270 mg of BHT is my current daily dosage, but people should start with less to see how they feel.

BHT and Coconut Oil

I've used coconut oil for 15 years or more, and I do not think CNOil by itself dissolves the lipid coating of virii. I've heard that CNOil derivatives such as Monoloaurin (ML) and Lauricidin (LC) do.

I could not tolerate ML and LC. They seemed to cause bacterial imbalances in my GI tract, possibly by killing off the good bacteria and enabling the bad bacteria to multiply.

BHT Overview
Posted by Swfowkes (Cupertino, California) on 09/16/2015 46 posts

This is in response to Oscar's comments re B12. This is my first time posting here, prompted by an email querry by one of your members.

(1) Oscar states that viral loads go up with B12. I've never see this. But most of the reports I get do not include PCR data. Those that I have seen, in which viral loads go down not up, did not have a control with/without B12.

(2) B12 does not have six amino groups. I am an organic chemist, so I can state that the six amine-containing groups on B12 are amide groups, not amine groups. Amide groups are poorer nucleophiles than amine groups by far, and even amine groups do not react with acid groups (on "BHT metabolites") to form "peptide bonds." It takes strong pH, extreme dehydration or enzymatic catalysis to form peptide bonds, none of which would apply to living human beings.

(3) Oscar states that B12 is recycled and that this means is would scavenge huge amount of BHT metabolites. Yes, B12 is recycled. But it is the cobalt site that is regenerated, not the "amide" side chains. If there were BHT metabolites bound to the six B12 amide groups, these linkages would have to be recycled, which is not only a different kind of recycling, but would result in the release the BHT metabolites intact from the hydrolysis of the linkages, which would be a reversible "condensation polymerization" reaction. So while Oscar may be right about B12, his explanation is not.

My very positive reports on B12 efficacy were mostly generated by people for whom BHT alone did not work well. So I can see a possibility that there might be reverse situations where BHT might be sabotaged by B12, which would never be reported to me as such. I shut down a severe case of trigeminal shingles in 48 hours with BHT and 10 mg B12. With that kind of efficacy, I would not have cared if my viral titers went high temporarily.

I was averaging 1-2 outbreaks a month of HSV 2 for many years (maybe 20 years). Acyclovir stopped them if started early enough, but only temporarily. I started taking BHT 300 mg, 5 months ago and I have not had even one outbreak. I am in heaven. SO grateful

Hi Tom (83), do you mean 1,000mg not 100mg. Capsules available are usually 180mg each, and not cheap at all.

Oscar, god bless you for all your hard work. I have been taking one 250 milligram capsule a day. I have only had one hsv2 breakout in three months. Thank you again and is there anywhere I can donate to you?

BHT Brands to Avoid

As far as I know, dramatically increasing the size of BHT particles has only one purpose, the prevention of absorption. I did this once for a woman with intractable intestinal cytomegalovirus (CMV). The attending doctors told her to get her affairs in order. She was on immunosuppressive drugs because of a kidney transplant (from an alcoholic donor! ) and likely had chronic blood toxicity from the failing transplant. She had also failed all hospital antiviral therapies. So the idea was to use BHT and to have it pass down the entire length of her GI tract. So I poured molten BHT into cracked ice and smuggled the coarse BHT chunks into the hospital. Three days later, she was having normal bowel movements. I asked her to look for floating chinks of BHT in the toilet, which she confirmed. BHT is lower density than water, so it floats. -- Warning: Despite being utterly flummoxed, the doctors refused to believe that BHT had anything to do with it. So do not let them know about it until after your recovery and discharge. They will take BHT away from you "for your own good."

BHT and Coconut Oil

Daniela,

10% by weight means 10 grams of BHT in 90 grams of coconut oil, or 15% by weight means 15 grams of BHT in 85 grams of coconut oil. But there is no need for precision in such a situation. You could add 50 grams of BHT to 50 grams of coconut oil and it would be OK. 50% by weight would mean that you would have undissolved BHT crystals at the bottom of your oil solution, but other than a bit of grittiness if you scooped to low, it would not be harmful at all. The grittiness would tend to go away as the temperature of the BHT-oil warmed from room temperature to body temperature. And as the oil was absorbed, you could end up with a greasy BHT residue on your skin. This could easily affect how often you have to do laundry, but both BHT and coconut oil are so inexpensive that the financial concern is near zero. The 10% figure I cite is better for cold climates (North Dakota) and the 15% for warm climates (fForida), but if your home, kitchen or bathroom is heated high enough, you do not need to worry about BHT crystalizing out of solution, even at 15%. Coconut oil itself will tend to solidify before BHT crystalizes. Personally, I add a tiny amount of medium-chain triglyderide oil (MCT, as the pure C8 type) to keep my BHT-mixture soft in the winter (I brush my teeth with it). I tend to heat my house sparingly.

I hope you got an answer to your question long before now, but it is a good question that deserves an answer here.

Hepatitis C

Got the best news I could ever ask for today, my bloodwork results are in and I no longer have any Hep C antibodies in my blood and my liver function levels are all normal. Now this is after failing conventional therapies back in 2008 and almost losing all hope of ever clearing this dreaded virus. I feel fantastic and I have to admit that BHT absolutely cures Hep C type 1a geno types when all else fails and it does it for pennies.

Anybody that comes across this post, you owe it to yourself to try this wonderful substance that has given me and so many others back our lives after thinking all was lost!! BHT works!! Thank you once again Oscar for saving me and many others by sharing BHT therapy with the masses. Cheers!

Hi Oscar,

I am so grateful for all your posts and information on BHT. I've been looking for years for something to eliminate viruses. I have Fibromyalgia, Hashimotos, ElectroHypersensitivity, EBV, Herpes and a lot of other issues. The herpes virus has been so virulent that when I get a flare up now, it starts in my lower back, whips right up the side of the nervous system it's going to break out on, gives me the most severe headaches I've ever had, and severe neck inflammation. The outbreaks have become horrific and I know these viruses have way too much power in my body. I have ordered the BHT and am so excited to see what it can do for me. I had to wean myself off 35,000mgs Milk Thistle and have done this over the last few weeks. I will add St Johns Wart too and update my progress.

I like the idea of powdered BHT for maximizing its absorption in the absence of fat. Cellulose is a filler, as Oscar writes, but it is also an anti-caking agent, which would keep the BHT from gluing itself back together. This happens naturally when BHT is warmed up too far. Even a UPS truck sitting in the summer sun can get hot enough to fuse BHT, powder or granules. But BHT also gets compressed in capsule-filling machines, which use mechanical screws to pack the powders into capsules. This will partially fuse BHT, unless you use an anti-caking agent. Cellulose is a fiber which only a few people contaminated with termite microbes can digest. So most people do not have a problem with it. Veggie-caps are made from methyl-cellulose, which is slightly different. There is one situation where powdered BHT is not the best choice: viral diseases of the gut, particularly the colon. One person with intestinal CMV was cured by coarse BHT made by pouring molten BHT into cracked ice. She was able to see undissolved BHT nuggets in the toilet, which was the goal: to have BHT present all the way down the GI tract. Her doctors had tried the gamut of antiviral drugs and had given up, stating that she should get her affairs in order. But three days on coarse-granular BHT had her chronic diarrhea resolving completely. Frankly, I was surprised by how well it worked.

Put BHT crystals in a double boiler and heat until it liquifies. Then pour it into cracked ice. That's what I did. I've also done it with a microwave oven, but you have to be careful not to use too much power.

You could also pour the molten BHT onto a flat surface and then break it up after it has solidified in a layer. Some people have poured molten BHT into gelatin or methylcellulose capsules to avoid tasting it.

I think you could pour molten BHT into refrigerator-cold water and have it solidify rather quickly. The slower you pour it, the thinner the stream. And the lower the temperature of the molten BHT, the faster it will solidify.

BHT melts at 158F (70C), which is well below the boiling temperature of water. So the double-boiler works great.

BHT Contraindications

Katie,

I doubt that BHT and coffee are in any way contraindicated. In 45 years of collecting feedback, this issue has never come up. There is some reason to suspect that coffee may have a mild pro-viral effect, it being an herbal extract with overall alkalinizing properties. But I am reluctant to say that such an effect is worth worrying about, partly due to the initial acidifying effects of coffee, and caffeine to cause thermogenesis (increased mitochondrial flux).

Jimster,

There is a general attenuation of BHT's effects in most people over time. This is a homeostatic adaptation mechanism and it works on all manner of things. The body automatically compensates for any "deviation" from homeostasis.

BHT works by altering the balance between metabolic states that I'll call catabolic-aerobic-acidic (the antiviral side of the balance) and anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline (the pro-viral side). So if you think of a teeter totter, the viral-susceptible person has their teeter totter naturally (or not) tipped towards proviral dominance. BHT puts weight on the other side of the teeter totter to tip it away from that pro-viral state.

But there is strength and depth for the anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline state. There is also compensation. The body can defend the pro-viral state for many reasons, many of which are hard to figure out, and others of which may seem nonsensical. There can be involvement of heavy metal toxicity, mitochondrial problems, hypothyroidism, chemical toxicities, epigenetic influences, genetic polymorphisms, primary nutritional deficiencies, secondary "sequestration" deficiencies of copper, iron and zinc, and more.

BHT is not a remedy for any of these. It is a general catabolic-aerobic-acidic agent, and an antioxidant. BHT can no more compensate for a magnesium-and-D3 deficiency than a beta-blocker drug can. All it can do is "balance" the imbalance. Most of the time, the underlying factors that may be "causing" the pro-viral imbalance remain in effect. Not always, but often.

There can be an entrainment effect. For example, some people who are given anesthetics for surgeries or traumas entrain to a lower basal metabolic rate. This further lowers their body temperature and aggravates their symptoms of cold hands and feet, constipation, loss of vagal tone, sleeping problems and depression. And increases their viral susceptibility. But BHT can break this entrainment. So can a few doses of thyroid hormone, some exercise, and/or a series of biofeedback trainings.

The pro-viral metabolic state (anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline) is also pro-autoimmune, pro-allergy, pro-depression, pro-fibromyalgia, pro-inflammatory. This is why people with such conditions have a higher risk of viral diseases.

Even though the dynamics of this kind of metabolic balance are complicated, the core concept is simple. There is a linear continuum between anabolic and catabolic and you are too far on one side. The strategy is equally simple: move towards the other side.

There are a hundred ways to do this; BHT is only one.

If this sounds intriguing enough that you want to follow up, read the BHT Book. It's free. It's a PDF document posted on the "steve" page at Project Wellbeing (dot com). And while you are there, feel free to download the thyroid one-pager, which discusses one of the most likely medical misdiagnoses associated with viral susceptibility.

If you want a more timely response to a posting here, copy the post and send it to me at Project Wellbeing. Steve at projectwellbeing dot com. It really helps me to know which page to search.

The interface here may poor, but the information is world class. Keep on posting.

BHT Overview

Hi everyone, first time posting here. I hope this group is still active, as it seems to be the only one I can find!

Just looking for some clarification on the next steps I should take.

I've suffered from oral herpes as long as I can remember.

I've been taking BHT for 3 years (750mg/day), and for the past 2 years now have been taking St. John's Wort (900mg/day) for the Hypericin.

While I can certainly say there has been an improvement in my frequency of outbreaks, it still isn't what I've hoped for. And they seem to be increasing in frequency this past year (although still much better than before all of this).

I used to get an outbreak every 3 months, now it seems to fluctuate between 2 to 3 per year.

My questions:

1) About supplements:

Oscar has mentioned to take BHT on an empty stomach without any supplements whatsoever, yet has mentioned supplements that may help.

Does this mean to take BHT in the morning and your supplements at night? For the past 3 years I've been taking BHT and supplements together, at night.

I take:

750mg BHT

1000mg L-Lysine (recently increased to 1500mg)

1000mg Vitamin C (just started dividing my dose morning, and night)

900mg of St John's Wort

3000mg of Omega3 Fish Oil (throughout the day -just started this one recently)

1.5 mg of Melatonin (for sleep)

A spoonful of Virgin Coconut Oil

-----

2) Question about Hypericin.

I've heard that when BHT doesn't work as well on it's own, that taking it with Hypericin can work wonders. I can't find this to purchase ANYWHERE. Other than in St John's Wort at 0.3%, which is why I take three 300mg pills of SJW a day. I've seen improvement over the past two years on St John's Wort, but nothing magical.

I've read the recommended dose for Hypericin is to work your way up to 10mg/ day. I don't think I should do that by taking 3000mg of St John's Wort.

Any idea where to find Hypericin on its own? I'm not sure how safe it is to greatly increase my St John Wort dosage.

------

3) Vitamin B12.

Just looking for clarification on this, as I've read conflicting information that this can either work great in combo with BHT, or should be avoided altogether.

I know that what I've been trying for the past few years isn't exactly working for me and I'm determined to find the next step toward beating this, or at least beat it into submission. Any and all help would be immensely appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Late Stage Cirrhosis
Posted by Oscar (Syracuse, New York) on 09/28/2012

Dear Wayseeker, I just prayed for Marv and want to see him make a full recovery from hepatitis C. Now, I am very troubled that you are having problems getting help from the VA, the Veterans Administration. I am a veteran also. I have had both good and bad experiences with the VA. Many veterans have hepatitis C. The VA is legally obligated to help these veterans. Did Marv ever recieve any blood transfusions? Also did he ever get any shots that are prodects of the blood? If he served in Vietnam he almost certainly did get such a shot. There was some shot they gave ALL of us as far as I know. I forgot what it was called.

If he has not yet joined the DAV he owes it to himself to join. The DAV is the Disabled American Veterans. They have been very helpful to me when dealing with the VA....Oscar

Late Stage Cirrhosis
Posted by Wayseeker (Modesto, Ca/ Usa) on 10/01/2012

Dear Oscar, Thank you so much for clarity on this matter re: the VA. Marv only recently became aware that he could be eligible for disability aid through the VA for Hep C. He had, off-and-on for 20 years, tried for it because of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but could not make it over the VA's humps and bumps. He has holes in his memory, and has blacked out the entire experience, therefore invalid in the VA's opinion. Marv could not tell them where he had been or what he had experienced, and so was repeatedly denied help by the VA. This, of course, is the very nature of PTSD, to have no memory of a traumatic experience. What a catch 22.

Now, with the recently discovered late stage cirrhosis and Hep C, they told him he "likely got it in 'Nam. " I thought this a strange remark. More likely, he got it in their group shots/ tainted blood shot!

I am the daughter of an attorney, and my instincts say lawsuit, or settlement of a disability claim. We will join the DAV today! He just got word of the decision being mailed to him for regular SS disability. We don't know what their decision is yet. Could be yes or no. Would this have any bearing on a VA disability claim settlement? Are you aware of any legal claim being settled in this manner? Or is this their quiet way of putting it to rest, to avoid legal action?

I am particularly annoyed, as I have born the financial burden, but in love, of paying for a great many things in caring for him and trying to find a cure. I am also quite ticked that I also must assume I have this, and begin to heal me, too. I have my own catch 22's with private insurance. It seems smarter to me to avoid the insurance rate hikes, being dropped, etc, and just assume the worst. I do already feel liver pain, and at the liver spot under my index toe. All positive test results are required to be reported, which in some countries already is grounds to not be employed. It would be safe to assume, as have long been together.

I have been doing the lypo Vit C, as am told this can also generate complete healing. Plan to move to BHT when run out of it. This strong form of Vit C can act as a strong detoxifier, and could null the BHT.

I am so grateful to you, and to EarthClinic and staff. You both have already made a huge difference in our lives, to have received such friendly guidance and suggestions. Some of us are more disfunctional than others, and don't know how to do everything!

I deeply believe in the power of sharing what we have found, in love toward one another, especially at this time. Marv has helped literally thousands of men with their sobriety over the past 32 years, for free and for fun. A more functional person would have been the director of a treatment center, knowing what he knows how to do. He is a very rare and special man, whom I pray lives a very, very long time.

Many blessings to you! --T.

BHT as Anti-Viral
Posted by Ing (Buffalo) on 01/03/2018

Lifelinks BHT is not pure BHT. Some type of powder with very little crystals mixed in, powder must be silica and some other filler because I'm allergic to silica and get symptoms of silica allergy from taking this lifelink BHT.

I spoke with seller at Lifelinks before purchasing and they assured me that their product was pure and contained "ONLY BHT". After I took one capsule and got reaction. I spoke with the same person and he was defensive and told me that they have different sources and it comes in "different forms" other than pure crystals. I don't trust this company at all now, my capsules are a mixture of crystals and powder.
