Alkalizing using baking soda and Lemon... I read the page on Ted's Alkalizng Formulas, however I didn't see how much baking soda should be used if it's mixed with Lemon or Lime juice. I just didnt' want to assume it was 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda as mentioned in the formulas for mixing with water or ACV.

Answer to Camara about Alkalizing Formulas

From "Alkalizing Formulas"
4. The Lemon Bicarbonate Formula
This simple formula will normalized many biological parameters, pH, ORP, phosphates, bicarbonates and antioxidants of vitamin C. A potential miracle water. One whole lemon freshly squeezed. Keep adding baking soda slowly bit by bit until the fizz stops. Then you will add water to one half glass. This is often taken twice a day. To be taken once in the morning and once before bedtime on an empty stomach.

The intent is to have a pH neutral beverage where where the alkaline neutralize the acid. As the text said, just add bit by bit the sodium bicarbonate until no fizz, indicating that the alkaline neutralized the acid. The amount of BS to add just depend on the amount of acid from the juice.

Thanks Ted for your Alkalizing Ph formula. I came across with an article about baking soda-cancer and Ph, the writer also stated that Alka-Seltzer Gold(Only this Kind of Alkaseltzer) help to alcalize Ph levels, I went to the web page and I found out that the ingredients of this product is: Sodium Bicarbonate 1050mg-Citric Acid 1000mg-Potassium Bicarbonate 344 mg,Bingo!! the same formula for alkalizing ph that you gave us.

Would you please let us know that you think about it, and if i can use it instead of baking soda-lemon or AV -baking soda or sodium bicarbonate-potacio bicarbonate formula.

Thanks,
Hugo

Thanks Ted for helping so many people. Hugo from Florida had asked if people can use Alka Seltzer Gold either as a substitute or in addition to other alkalizing formulas - is this a possibility? Also, can AVC be added to the Alka Seltzer Gold too? Thanks!

EC: FYI: Alka-Seltzer Gold's Ingredients are: citric acid, potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate

Does Alka-Seltzer Gold alkalize or not?

to Hugo and Cindi. This does look like a good remedy but it has two inactive ingredients that compromise it as a good alternative to Teds remedy - "magnesium stearate, mannitol" and if you google these you'll find they are not so good for you.

Hi Ted, Thanks for all your alkalizing advice. I have been using the lemon + baking soda formula for over 6 months now. I have a lot of energy. My skin looks great. The pH of my urine is 7,5 or higher consistantly. I take one lemon plus about 1 teaspoon of baking soda. I add one liter of water. this is what i do twice a day. Now here comes my question. Some people noticed my change in energy and also the way i look. They started doing the same, but they experience a rise in bloodpressure. My own bloodpressure doesn't rise above 125 / 83 even when i add extra baking soda. Could you explain why my bloodpressure stays the same while my friend's bloodpressure rises? Several others didn't report anything but positive from this remedy. My aunt and brothers told me their Acid reflux was gone in a few days. They also experience significant weight loss. Thanks alot!

Best regards,
Hans

Dear Hans,
The reason why some mates of yours reported increase in blood pressure form taking lemon/bicarb formula is because sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) will aggravate sodium excess in some people. To combate this simply sip ACV diluted in water (do not mix it with bicarb)to potassium load the body and cure the high blood pressure. you can see from the ACV page on this site the "Run down" of nutrients inside ACV.....take a close look at the potassium levels in it and compare with all the other nutient levels.

I have tried Ted's lemon and baking soda mix (juice of 1 lemon and 1/2 tsp. baking soda in water) morning and night for two days. I started with diarrhea and then due to pain in the upper right quadrant, started to think it might be related to gallbladder.(I was diagnosed with a slow emptying gall bladder) I think I may have disrupted by acid/base balance by over eating oranges and grapefruits around Christmas and then eating quite a bit of fruit as well. I do get some relief from the pain, but diarrhea is still with me for two plus weeks. I will stay with this treatment for a few more days.

My problem is too much acid in my system. I just started using pH papers, and my levels were 5.5 - 6.25. Frankly, it scared me. I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia, and have learned that your body will steal calcium from your bones just to try and balance your pH! I tried alkalizing formula #4, the lemon juice, baking soda, and water for the first time last night before I went to bed. The glass almost overflowed with "fizz" and the taste was not the greatest, but in the morning, my urine pH was in the 7 range! Normal! A big change from the previous mornings! Thank you so much for your alkalizing formulas - they are a godsend!

I purchased a PH meter to determine how much baking soda is necessary to bring lemon, lime or 2 Tbs. vinegar to PH 7. The formulas state that about 1/4 teaspoon brings the mixture to a PH of 7. In fact it requires almost 4 times that to accomplish this, & the taste is awful. Following directions as given is causing trusting readers (like myself) to pour acid over acid in their stomachs. Are these irresponsible guesses being posted or am I missing something?

The pH of the formula is not the most important factor here, nor is taste. What is important is the resultant pH of the urine, not the solution. You need to obtain a urinary pH of 7. So by measuring your urine you will determine the exact dose. Scientists have agreed to the urinary pH as the ultimate measure of whether the target achieved, not what you drink. However, if a pH reading is used for a particular remedy, the ideal pH would be between 7.0 - 7.5.

Most scientist have also agreed that the pH outcome of whatever you eat should be judge as a basis of whether it's acid forming or alkaline forming. In general, most sour foods in the long run will cause acid urine, and most bitter foods (less popular) will cause urine to alkaline pH. Hence, our tongues prefer sour to bitter and it's one of the many reasons why we are suffering from acidosis. Sugar is acid forming too.

The lemon or lime remedy requires 2 tablespoon of juice plus 1/2 teaspoon, not 1/4 teaspoon. Teaspoon sizes may vary unless you are using a cook's set of measurement spoons. However I used a regular teaspoon where the size is larger than a quarter coin. One whole lime plus 1/2 teaspoon baking soda is 7.5 pH.

A newly purchased pH meter needs to be calibrated. A pH meter must be recalibrated with each use if that is used not often, with a buffer 7 solution. They tend to go off.

Apple cider vinegar plus baking soda (2 tablespoons of ACV plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda) pH is exactly 7.0 after 2-3 minutes. It goes higher as you wait and settles down at about 7.3-7.5. Of course the solutions of pH may vary depending on the brand.

What you are missing on is most people take plain ACV for acid reflux, which is a worse option than taking baking soda added by some to neutralize pH. The remedy assumes you are using apple cider vinegar, not distilled vinegar."

EC: We asked Ted how long one should wait before testing the pH of the urine after drinking one of the formulas.

His response: "Wait a minimum of one hour or more before taking a urinary pH sampling. I prefer to measure pH BEFORE and then AFTER I take a remedy to see the differences.

After an hour, the urinary pH should remain more or less the same for the next 6 hours at least. But this very much depends on the dose. And of course this is assuming there's not strenuous physical activity.

A more complicated technique involves measuring saliva samples, which more or less reflects the status of intracellular fluids (the pH of the inside the cells), where the controlling pH is the potassium and magnesium. While the urinary reflects closer to extracellular fluids, which is the baking soda, or bicarbonates.

EC: Then we asked Ted how to calibrate a pH meter...

Ted replies, "Usually when I buy a new pH meter, they will give me a 7.0 buffer solution, which I use to adjust the pH meter to 7.0 using a screwdriver. So the pH meter has to be stuck into the buffer solution when I calibrate it. So at a specific room temperature, which is often at about 25 degree Celsius to be 7.0 pH at that going temperature.

In Thailand the weather is hotter, usually above 30 degree Celsius so I have to adjust it closer to 6.99 or 6.98 pH. The manufacturers will give you a small table and tell you how to adjust, one the finer points. However, in practice, 7.0 is the common figure I use a screwdriver to adjust the LCD of the pH meter to 7.0.

One interesting story concerns one Earthclinic visitor here in Bangkok who bought a pH meter which he corresponded in private, adjusted it once with the buffer 7.0 and then threw the entire contents away after he calibrated! He forgot that the buffer solution can be reused and that the meter must be recalibrated constantly. So I ended up buy him a large two liter bottle of 7.0 buffer solution - that was the smallest size I bought at a school supply store!

Usually the buffer solution can be reused several times, until of course the colors change and you know its time to throw away the buffer solution.

In an emergency, sometimes I can't get a buffer solution so I make a simple saturated solution of potassium chloride added to a water.

It will approximate itself to about 7, but this homemade one aren't exactly accurate, and I have to throw away the solution after I finished. I don't worry about throwing away here since potassium chloride here are quite cheap. They sell it by the kilogram and it is only a couple of dollars. A buffer solution will be more expensive, but sometimes the school supply store don't have it in stock.

When I was new to this pH meter thing, I had to recalibrate everytime until the device stabilizes, then thereafter I might adjust it once a month. However, different models will need ifferent maintenance.

Hopefully this clears up the calibration issue.

Ted, I am slightly confused regarding the purpose of alkalizing. The stomach is naturally an acidic environment, for digestive purposes. In my study of Nutritional Medicine, I have been told that drinking water during meals will dilute the digestive acids. I'm sure this will all be made clear to me soon =) Your information becomes increasingly more interesting as one becomes more educated in this area! Cheers Daniel

Daniel, You are correct. Alkalizing the stomach is a very bad idea. It shows a lack of understanding of physiolgy. We produce acid inside of the stomch because we are supposed to. Enzyme activation, especailly protease activity, requires an acidic environment.

Low stomach acid prdouces a decrease ability do digest your food. Alkalizing the body is different than alkalizing the stomach.

1. What kind of shops are they sold in
2. is there a good brand you would recommend?
3. Roughly how much are they?
4. I live in Australia so if I can't find one here, what about ebay?

Would be very grateful for any info.

Hi Diane... In answer to some of your questions:

* pH Meters are sold in Garden Centers, Aquarium Shops and in shops selling Swimming Pool goods. Larger chain hardware shops sometimes stock them.

* The cost of a pH meter can be from $10.00(US) upwards depending on the accuracy that you want.

* You will see a nice selection of pH meters on eBay by typing "ebay.com pH meter" into Google Search.

Ted, Many thanks for all your efforts in helping people alkalize - I particularly like and use your Lemon/Baking soda recipe. I moved from UK to the Phillippines to live last year in order to change my stress-ridden life and since moving, I haven't been ill once - no colds or flu or anything.

As well as taking your wonderful remedy and after much research on the web, I also make an alcoholic tincture for myself which consists of vodka and about 95% mangosteen peel, fruit and seed, plus about 10 cloves, cinnamon and a few crushed pomello seeds(same as grapefruit seed). I try and use all local grown ingredients and it is dirt cheap. I use this tincture both as a mouthwash and also to prevent parasites taking hold. I take 2 teaspoons of this tincture every 2 or 3 days with water. It seems to work a treat. Just some question for you. Can you use Andrews Liver Salts(contains powdered citric acid and sodium bicarbonate only) with water instead of your recipe? I only mention this because sometimes, when you're travelling, you can't get limes or lemons. Some people say you will get gallstones if you use Andrews Liver salts daily - Is this true ? Much thanks again, Bill

I had torn scar tissue on a ligament (old injury) in my right Buttock, which for weeks had caused severe pain when I walked. It was like an ice pick thrust into my hip. Having read about Lime juice buffered with Baking Soda I tried this Remedy two nights ago and awoke painfree and energectic the next morning. Unfortunately I had so much energy that I overdid it! Now, I have some tenderness at the site and in my back muscles but the sharp pain is still gone. The only negative effect is that I am dealing with frequent urination and diarrhea. I will continue the course of Lime juice and Baking Soda for 5 days and then rest for two. Thanks, Tom

I am getting so confused, the more I read the more confused I get. My urine ph is about 5. And I am suffering from candida. I have purchased Methylene Blue, Caprylic Acid, Borax, Baking Soda, Sodium Carbonate. Now I just need to know how much, how often and how long and the right combination. I need a regimen to follow. The correct amount of ingredients to make the perfect Carbicarb (seen several different versions).

Thank you all I hope you can help me!

Hi, I have dealt with Candida issues and find that the diet needs to be cleaned up as one is taking suppliments..... Stop all sugar wether it comes from dairy, honey, syrup, fructose corn syrup, breads, pastries, pasta, white rice, fruits, etc. I ate plenty of organic eggs with organic butter, fried my foods in coconut oil, used garlic and onions, hot peppers, organic meat is best as some animals have been fed antibiotics which is nortorious for yeast overgrowth, organic bacon, mashed cauliflower in place of potatoes, used organic chicken broth and other organic broth as well to make soups, add flavor, etc, ate lots of vegetables, Brown rice, xylitol for sweetness to my oatmeal with no added milk, you can use Almond milk Or made rice pudding with eggs, xylitol, spices, some coconut oil, a touch of Almond milk then let it thicken and cool, it was delicious. I eat saurerkraut called Bubbies from the Oganic store, it is delicious and has natural enzymes, etc. You may have to forgo beans for now and winter squash until the candida clears up.

I took Suppliments: Organic Vitamin Code, Milk Thistle, coconut oil Capsules, A complete digestive enzymes with most meals, turmeric, Dr. Ohirras Probiotic Plus 12, Chorella, , lots of garlic, occassional baking soda in water. Research the suppliments that are good candida fighters and try them.... Some may work better for you than others... I highly recommend the Dr Ohirras Probiotic plus 12, it needs no refrigeration like so many others do, it can be found online at several websites, it is worth the cost believe me. But remember, clean up your diet or it will not be conquered for long, you have to starve it from it's food source which is sugar or forms of sugar. Xylitol is a sort of sugar but actually aids in getting rid of yeast overgrowth, it measures cup for cup and has really good flavor.

Right now I am finishing reading a book called Cure Candida through Diet, very interesting indeed and which gives you a lot of information but the diet.... That is a problem for me so I can't imagine that I will be doing it, sorry! Eating fish and meat with vegetables is not a problem but then potatoes or rice also with vegetables alone.... Only if I was very ill. And porridge? No...... But the advice about the supplements is quite interesting as well as advice about easier ways of adapting your diet and lots of recipes.

I am happy to hear about it. A gall bladder needs a lot of bicarbonates during digestion and they are one of the important components. If bicarbs are lacking, a gall bladder problem is possible. The vitamin c content neutralizes excess oxidation, and reduces the pain by both antioxidation and excess acidity which causes gallbladder pain.

Two supplements you should look into - nattokinase and vitamin K2 (ML7 form) - if you haven't. These should make high blood pressure a moot issue.

You may consider taking a break from the bicarbonate soda. Maybe you are over doing it. Some people switch to potassium bicarbonate but you have to research the implications of that yourself.

Hi Dan, I believe it is the sodium content of baking soda raising your blood pressure. I would give it a break for a while. If you can cut your salt intake in other foods, maybe you won't have a problem. Baking soda only raises my bp if I have eaten too much salty food in a restaurant. I also take it regularly as an alkalizing remedy.

Bill, you recommend that those with sodium issues could squeeze one lemon/lime and add bicarbonate until fizzing stops. But, you do not mention adding water afterwards. Does this mean that after the fizzing stops it should be consumed without adding water? Please clarify.

I did 2 days on 1/2 tsp baking soda and blood pressure was 198/97 had to stop foggie in the head from it. I've always had a intolerance to salt so I never would use it on my own but foods have their own salt additives so I know I got salt in other ways. I hoped the baking soda would help with acidic in my body but I dare not use the baking soda again unless I ask Dr.

Any thoughts on this?
