There is a general attenuation of BHT's effects in most people over time. This is a homeostatic adaptation mechanism and it works on all manner of things. The body automatically compensates for any "deviation" from homeostasis.
BHT works by altering the balance between metabolic states that I'll call catabolic-aerobic-acidic (the antiviral side of the balance) and anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline (the pro-viral side). So if you think of a teeter totter, the viral-susceptible person has their teeter totter naturally (or not) tipped towards proviral dominance. BHT puts weight on the other side of the teeter totter to tip it away from that pro-viral state.
But there is strength and depth for the anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline state. There is also compensation. The body can defend the pro-viral state for many reasons, many of which are hard to figure out, and others of which may seem nonsensical. There can be involvement of heavy metal toxicity, mitochondrial problems, hypothyroidism, chemical toxicities, epigenetic influences, genetic polymorphisms, primary nutritional deficiencies, secondary "sequestration" deficiencies of copper, iron and zinc, and more.
BHT is not a remedy for any of these. It is a general catabolic-aerobic-acidic agent, and an antioxidant. BHT can no more compensate for a magnesium-and-D3 deficiency than a beta-blocker drug can. All it can do is "balance" the imbalance. Most of the time, the underlying factors that may be "causing" the pro-viral imbalance remain in effect. Not always, but often.
There can be an entrainment effect. For example, some people who are given anesthetics for surgeries or traumas entrain to a lower basal metabolic rate. This further lowers their body temperature and aggravates their symptoms of cold hands and feet, constipation, loss of vagal tone, sleeping problems and depression. And increases their viral susceptibility. But BHT can break this entrainment. So can a few doses of thyroid hormone, some exercise, and/or a series of biofeedback trainings.
The pro-viral metabolic state (anabolic-anaerobic-alkaline) is also pro-autoimmune, pro-allergy, pro-depression, pro-fibromyalgia, pro-inflammatory. This is why people with such conditions have a higher risk of viral diseases.
Even though the dynamics of this kind of metabolic balance are complicated, the core concept is simple. There is a linear continuum between anabolic and catabolic and you are too far on one side. The strategy is equally simple: move towards the other side.
There are a hundred ways to do this; BHT is only one.
If this sounds intriguing enough that you want to follow up, read the BHT Book. It's free. It's a PDF document posted on the "steve" page at Project Wellbeing (dot com). And while you are there, feel free to download the thyroid one-pager, which discusses one of the most likely medical misdiagnoses associated with viral susceptibility.

I have been suffering with chronic HSV1 in the pelvic region for several years, the result of which is that it has lead to worsening and debilitating symptoms of constant daily nerve pain, prostatitis, burning, itching, hip-pain, lack of balance, paraesthesia, bladder difficulties, back ache and many others. The list of symptoms I have recorded over time, almost seems incredible, even when I now review it myself. In addition, there has also been male-dysfunction due to its effect on the autonomic nervous system and also neuromuscular control. I have been self-treating with valacyclovir and acyclovir, which mediates almost all of the symptoms, at least those which have not suffered long-term damage and this has enabled me to prove to myself that HSV has been causative in these symptoms.
None of the doctors I have seen in Thailand have been helpful and as is usual here, unwilling to do any research or go out of their way to help. So I have spent the last three years at least, carrying out my own research using herbal remedies, energy medicine, Rife-therapy, ozone therapy, cold-laser, Bob Beck protocol and some others. In doing so, I have made several overseas trips in order to obtain treatment in other countries, which isn't available in Thailand. I have learned a great deal and feel that I have gained a sufficient amount of information to be able to help others (at least to a limited extent) but most of the treatment, with the possible exception of ozone therapy, has not helped me very much, although it has often at first responded to the treatments.
My condition is slightly unusual in that there never was very much in terms of classic herpes lesions - instead the skin remained erythmatous and sore for several years - but the virus's effect on my nerves has been enormous and quite shocking. I have read many other posters' comments online (on Medhelp for example), suggesting that I am by no means alone and also suggesting that HSV1, in contrast to HSV2, may contribute to more chronic symptoms in the pelvic region. Many others for example have indicated that HSV1 has not always caused open lesions, but nevertheless has caused considerable ongoing nerve pain.
The condition has sometimes caused me great distress and depression, to the extent that I have been unable to face life sometimes. It has also caused me to become reclusive and almost stop work completely. Not only has there been the inconvenience of the condition itself, but the fact that it never goes into remission, as it is reported to do and that it has caused so much damage physiologically. I can never get the problem out of my mind, unfortunately. The impact it has had on my life for the past seven years has been almost implausible.
Whenever I attempt to treat the condition, whether it may be using L-lysine, high-dose vitamin C, St. John's Wort, coconut oil, intravenous ozone, Rife-therapy or others, the symptoms usually improve for a day or two, then return to normal. This has been the hallmark of my condition. It appears that my case is unusual and the level of virulence is such that treatment is largely ineffective. I now have a supply of BHT here at home (after a very long wait) and began treatment three days ago, injesting it with heated olive oil. During the following morning after the first dose of 180mg, my pain had reduced to almost zero. This follows a recent claim from a neurologist at Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok, claiming that the virus had probably caused permanent lesions in my nerves and that recovery could not therefore be expected - and that he could do nothing for me. He refuted the idea that the virus is permanently active but was rather fond of telling me "what was indicated for treatment and what was not". Yet after taking BHT, the nerves were quietened. I have not been completely pain-free since beginning this therapy last week, but it appears to have contributed very well. I am still taking daily acyclovir - I do not know whether to stop it. But since using BHT three days ago, I have been able to reduce acyclovir from 400mg x 4 per day, to only x 2 per day, without suffering the usual worsening pain some 4 hours after dosage.
I am however somewhat confused by the advice given in some of the posts by Oscar and others, relating to BHT - they suggest taking BHT with water only, on an empty stomach, while Steven Fowkes seems to highly recommend taking it with oil, given that it is oil-soluable. In other posts, the use of vitamin B12 is suggested, while in another Oscar mentions that it may not be good to do so. Similarly, vitamin E is suggested in Steven Fowkes' book, while in other places, vitamin E is discouraged.
This is what I am taking at the moment, per day, although I'm cognisant that Oscar suggests taking as little supplementation as possible, in order to help BHT do its work.
Acyclovir 400mg x 3Vitamin C powdered form, several grams x 2 times per day
Zinc 50mg
Alpha R-Lipoic acid, 400mg - nerve repair
Folic acid, 50 mg
Selenium 200mcg x 2 times per day
Bee Propolis 500g x 2 times per day
Omega 3 fish oil, 2 grams x 2 times per day
Hypericum (St. John's Wort), regularly chewed
L-Carnitine Fumarate, 3.42 grams - nerve repair
BHT 720mg
Vitamin A, 10,000 IU (with each BHT dose)
Vitamin D3,5,000 IU (with each BHT dose)
Q10,29mg (a poor quality Thai product unfortunately)
I also inject intramuscularly, the following, once per day.
Vitamin B6,100mgVitamin B12,2000mcg
Naturally, I would of course like to reduce this preposterous amount of supplementation. I will post further on results, but appreciate likewise any suggestions for refining this treatment.

BHT treatment as recommended by Oscar is:
100mg to 350mg of BHT taken with water on an empty stomach once or twice a day. The dosage varies for each person. Weight is an important factor in determining dosage. Fat content of a person`s body is another. Generally the more you weigh and the higher the fat content of your body the more BHT you need to effectively treat a viral infection. Many average size men have done very well with 250mg of BHT taken twice a day. If adverse side effects occur and persist, LOWER the dosage of BHT used. That is the treatment.
Supplements that have been shown to work well with the BHT treatment are:
1. A regular type multi-vitamin and mineral pill once a day.
2. A regular type vitamin B complex pill.once a day.
3. Vitamin B12 in a dosage of 1mg [ milligrams ] per day. 1mg is the same as 1, 000mcg { micrograms ].
4. Vitamin C in a daily dosage of between 500mg and 1, 000mg per day.
5. The lipid monolaurin. Unsure about dosage.
6. The herb chianca piedra seems especially helpful in treating hepatitis B. Unsure of dosage.
7. Sodium selenite in a daily dosage of 50mcg [ micrograms ].
Also, and importantly: Continue taking any doctor prescribed medicines or drugs. Very many of the people who have had dramatic improvement with this BHT treatment are taking a doctor prescribed medicine of one type or another.
SUPPLEMENTS TO AVOID. Do not take:
1. Milk Thistle and it`s extracts. Degrades the treatment to the point that it no longer works.
2. Grapefruit juice. Degrades the treatment to the point it no longer works.
3. Colloidal silver
4. Hydrogen peroxide taken internally. Hydrogen peroxide is a REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES. It will make the BHT treatment NOT work.
5. MMS [ Miracle Mineral Supplement ]. MMS is chlorine bleach, a very powerful oxidizer that will react with BHT in such a way as to make the treatment not work.
6. Vitamin E supplements. Yes you NEED some vitamin E. But a normal diet provides plenty. Vitamin E supplements have been shown to enhance lipid coated viruses ability to replicate and should be avoided for that reason.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For best result stick with those supplements I listed that have been shown to work well with the BHT treatment. Vitamin B12 is an especially good one.
That is the treatment that works consistently well based on the substantial feedback available....Oscar
So, like I said: If you are trying the BHT treatment report in and let us know how it is working....Oscar

1. Do not mix or use other treatments and supplements including: milk thistle and it`s extracts and also do not drink grapefruit juice for best results. Taking vitamins in moderate dosages seems to be helpful. I know that may sound screwy to many people out there but that is what the feedback indicates. That grapefruit juice interacts with a very many drugs or medications in sometimes fatal ways. Most especially with statin drugs and many pain medications. The list of things grapefruit juice negatively impacts is amazingly long. And, the milk thistle seems to make the treatment not work very well.
2. The people showing the most dramatic improvement are using a dose of between 200mg and 350mg taken twice a day, in the morning and at night with water on an empty stomach. Not every one can tolerate that much but most adults can. For those that can`t the treatment simply takes longer but still works with smaller dosages.
For more information about BHT to treat hepatitis viruses go to: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BHTcures/
But please do report your experience with this treatment here at the EARTH CLINIC.
Also and importantly: Anyone wishing to try this treatment needs to test themselves regarding sensitivity to BHT. Start with very low dosages and see how it effects you. Generally most people tolerate between 200mg and 700mg of BHT per day well, but not everyone. Those capsules can be easily sperated and smaller doses created by removing some of the contents of those capsules....Oscar

I now test negative for HBV and HCV as of 2006 with the antibodies test. It is as if I was never exposed to both of those viral diseases. Up until at least 1998 I tested positive for both. I do recommend joining the BHT CURES GROUP here to stay up to date on all of the different people`s reports: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BHTcures/
Also, for most people: A hepatitis B infection is quite different than a HCV infection. The usual pattern for HBV is that you get sick within a week or so and either survive it or you do not. Most people do survive. With hepatitis C you get soewhat sick soon, but recover. And then many years later as the virus eats away at your liver you get chronically and progressively sicker. Many people never do get chronically ill with HCV and many do. They are two very different diseases....Oscar

Today marks 34 days of twice a day 350mg BHT for me. Last fall I was very sick. My doctor had blood work done to see just how bad things were in mid October. My viral load, which has always been high, was 23,000,000!! The highest it had been before was 12,000,000 or so. My ALT and AST were always just above normal but last October were AST 203, ALT 155.
Unfortunately it took until late December to discover this web site (thanks to my wife) and Oscar's posts on BHT. I started taking the BHT January 6th, 2012. That is not long ago. I had blood work done February 6th and got the results today. I know that Hep C viral loads fluctuate and my new numbers my reflect some fluctuation but, my new viral load as of Monday this week is 5,000,000. Seems to be quite a drop to be only a fluctuation. My Doctor is apprehensive but supportive. AST and ALT were not as impressive at 132 and 128 but encouraging enough.
I am convinced this is working. I seem to get the best results physically when I do not add other supplements to my daily routine. I have been on Prevacid for three years and find that I don't need it much any more. I have taken one pill every 6 or so days for the last three weeks. Coincidence? I don't know.
There are days when my urine is a little dark and my stools are not entirely normal day to day but the difference from last fall to now, after one month of BHT, is thrilling. We bought 9 bottles with a 50 day supply in each and are in it for the long haul. I encourage anyone who knows someone with hepC to expose them to this site and Oscar's work. I personally cannot thank him enough.
God bless, Dave

But, from your statement: You were NOT experiencing any such side effects and was responding very well to the BHT treatments prior to adding the olive oil to your diet. So for you: Go back to taking the BHT without the olive oil in your diet until and unless you start experiencing any nervous system disorders. And NEVER mix or take the BHT at the same time as olive oil or any other oil. Stick with what works best. It seems to me you do NOT need or desire the addition of olive oil to your diet, at least for now. If you do start experiencing nervous disorders you might want to try one tablespoon of olive oil every other day and see how that works for you.
Now when I was really sick with hepatitis C I did not take any olive oil or any other oil. I was lean but not thin. I weighed about 175 pounds and am about 6 feet tall. The digestion of all fats and oils do require bile salts and other things produced in the liver. This may account for this set back in this your BHT therapy. I do NOT have all the answers for each and every person regarding the use of BHT to treat hepatitis C. Hopefully, with the feedback that you and others are providing we can answer these questions and come up with some meaningful guide lines.
I wish I had reliable answers for each and every person trying this BHT therapy, but I do not at this time. For now and for you I will say go back to what was working very well for you and stop taking the olive oil at least for now and let us see how that works for you. You are getting well and the BHT therapy is working. We just need to establish and stick with what works best for you. You may very well wish to include some olive oil in your diet as your liver function improves and you may already be there. I do NOT know.
Do not get overly concerned about some minor set back. You tolerate the BHT very well and it is working for you. And please: keep me and this forum updated as to your progress along with any setbacks or problems you may experience. This is the ONLY way there is to answer these questions, with feedback.
So, for now: If no adverse side effects are experienced with the use of BHT I advise against the addition of any sort oil to a person`s diet in the first 2 months of treatment because all fats and oils do put an additional demand on the liver. I do NOT mean a person should avoid all fats and oils. A healthy source of lipids is essential to a healthy diet. Simply do NOT add that extra tablespoon of olive oil if and only if no previous nervous condition developes with the use of BHT. I do NOT have all the answers. You have to find out what works best for you....Oscar

It does take some time as I have explained many times now for anyone to get well with this treatment. A few weeks to a few months depending on how infected and damaged a person`s liver is to begin with for one thing. Again: BHT can NOT uninfect an infected liver cell. What it does do is to prevent any unifected liver cells from becoming infected by destroying the viral particles in the blood and other intercellular fluids. And like I have said: EVERY liver cell that makes up a person`s liver is a new cell about every year or so.
So: if no new cells become infected a true cure eventually does occur. This does take years of daily dosing with BHT and I am sure it varies from person to person. This is because the BHT is NOT 100% effective in destroying all the viral particles. Some of these viral particles will remain intact and go on to infect other liver cells. But as time goes by with daily dosing with BHT: Less and less of the liver cells are infected and more and more of them are uninfected. But you can live a perfectly normal and healthy life as this process goes on once enough of your liver is healthy and functioning adequately. So, there is no big hurry. I say that because you can definately take too much BHT in hopes of getting truly cured more quickly. People need to find a dose that is both safe and effective and this dose does vary from person to person.
So: You are off to or with a good start: You found a dose that is effective and is not causing adverse effects. Keep the forum and me updated with your progress. Ciao, ...Oscar

I've been having a look at aging research, what causes it and how to prevent or at least slow down the aging process. This has led me to the research of Prof Denham Harman, a famous biochemist, whose important theories and research on the use of antioxidants to prevent the effects of free radical damage are now so well accepted. But his other research conclusions appear to have been conveniently and completely ignored.
Dr Harman has proved and demonstrated by his research that:
* Vegetable oils (polyunsaturated fats) such as chemically processed canola oil (rapeseed oil), corn oil etc are not very healthy for us. Dr Harman ultimately proved outright that vegetable oils increased the risk of cancers occurring in the human body.
* From Harman's research he showed that BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene), a superb antioxidant, can extend the lives of mice by 45%. Dr Harman also recommended both Vitamin C and Vitamin E in the diet and in much higher dosages than recommendd by the RDA.
* He also showed that Cell Mitochondria also independently produce free-radicals in the cell as a by-product of cell energy production which, on heavy accumulation, could adversely affect and corrupt the cell nucleus DNA. These free-radicals must therefore be mopped up within the cell by sufficient daily antioxidants in human diet.
* Thus free-radical damage can occur in several areas independently -- it can occur outside the cell in the blood where free-radicals can cause oxidative damage and this can also occur independently inside the cell, causing similar damage to the nucleus DNA. Also, his research concluded that much free radical damage occurred in the brain -- a high user of energy -- leading to Alzheimer's and Dementia. His research conclusions here were that if particularly cellular mitochondrial oxidation by free radicals could be reduced overal then this would actually extend life. In light of this, Harman discovered that BHT was one of the few antioxidants that was able cross the blood/brain barrier easily to protect the brain cell mitochondria from free radical damage.
* Also of interest, I've also recently discovered that BHT occurs naturally in Humic acid deposits as well as leafy mould. BHT can also be extracted from phytoplankton.
Notably, Ted from Bangkok has always maintained that all the above is true. He also uses BHT in his well-known cancer cures and other viral remedies(against mainly lipid coated viruses) and also maintains, with very good reason, that vegetable oils (polyunsaturated oils) are all unnatural in our diet and quite bad for us.
