Training Your Cat to Come to Its Name
Posted by Cheryl (Highland Park, NJ) on 07/08/2023 10 posts

If you already have a name for your cat, you can skip to the next section. But there are a couple of things to keep in mind when you're trying to come up with a name for your furry feline.

First, try to 'tune in' to your cat and get a sense of what his or her personality really is like. I remember this one sassy cat a friend had years ago who was named "Princess." The name did not fit the cat's personality at all. When I tuned in to her fresh face, I soon felt that a more suitable name for her would be Toots, as in the roaring '20s, "Hey, Toots, whatcha doin' tonight?"

My friend really loved the new name (being a New Yorker), and so the cat finally had a name that fit her and her sassy attitude. So, be fair to your cat - they have really sensitive feelings - and try to resist naming it things like Xanax or Harddrive. Funny though they may be, names like this are just not likely to suit an individual cat's personality. No wonder so many of them seem 'aloof' or unresponsive - the owners have never taken the time to get to know who they really are!

Second, try to come up with a name that has long vowel sounds in it, especially "ee", as this is a sound that is very easy for an animal's ears to hear, like Chi Chi. Even a name like Lulu has long vowels that are easy to hear, as opposed to Princess, which has short vowel sounds that are not distinctive.

Training Your Cat to Come to Its Name

Now we're getting down to the fun part. I came across this information years ago when I was on my own after college and acquired three throw-away kittens. My family had always had pets, but I never had sole responsibility for them until now.

I discovered this old book, The Fabulous Feline, or Dogs Are Passe`, which was very thorough and comprehensive on everything from feeding and grooming to training and cat psychology. The most trainable period for a cat is from 3 to 9 months, very similar to dogs.

The author pointed out that, while dogs are often trained with treats and verbal commands, the key to a cat's heart is pleasure. Yes, pleasure! Most cats - unless they have been abused or abandoned - love to have their spines stroked. It's just like mama cat washing her babies to stimulate the pituitary gland so the kitten grows and thrives. And remember, for 4-legged creatures, the spine goes all the way out to the tip of the tail.

When you're petting your cat - stroking its spine and neck, around the cheekbones and ears - it should begin to purr. Once it purrs, this is when you start to implant the association with its name.

So, over and over, as you stroke and it purrs, you say the cat's name, lovingly. Every time you have the cat in one of these pleasure sessions, repeat the cat's name fondly. Something in their psychology responds well to being adored. (A carry-over from Egypt when they were revered as gods? It might be genetic! )

After a couple of weeks of this, try testing out whether the name has "taken" yet, whether the cat has associated the name and the pleasure response. You see the cat across the room and it's looking at something else or washing itself, whatever, it's preoccupied. Then you call its name and see if it looks at you, or at least cocks an ear in your direction. This is a good sign.

You'll know that the cat really recognizes its name when it comes over to you when you call it. So keep up the association of pleasure and saying its name until you get this result.

When I lived in the country, my cats would roam out into the woods and fields. When I called them for dinner, I'd see them appear from far away, running to the house, just like dogs. People would be amazed that they came to their names but, once you know their secret, responding to their names is as natural for them as it is for us!

I use Colloid Silver in a dropper for my cat with herpes in his eyes & it works a treat. It does not sting etc. It really is brilliant for keeping it at bay, as you know there isnt a cure, it lays dormant in body till something flares it up which can be stress, heatwave, strong sunshine & damp

I have a 10 year old cat with a sinus infection that has been antibiotic resistant. Over 2 years and vet visits, no help but the antibiotics are toxic to her.

For 7 days skipping some days, I have used a nasal spray I bought through Amazon, its 2% potassium iodine & fulvic acid. It's working well! She's the best I've ever seen her except after giving a round of antibiotics, and I can't keep giving those since it takes the life out of her because antibiotics given so frequently are toxic, literally.

So everyone, try the 2% potassium iodine/ fulvic acid nasal spray, made in the USA.brand name is Triquetra, Nasomin, blu& white box.

I have for 7 days

Aloe and Laser

It's only the yellow liquid latex found just inside the skin of Aloe leaves --which has been removed & concentrated-- that needs to be warned about ... as it is a very strong irritant of the bowels ... so strong that they stopped using it in cases of human constipation long ago!

However, the clear inner gel is quite safe for humans & pets to ingest! It is also very easy to give aloe to our pets without the aloe latex!

'Only the Latex in Aloe Vera is Toxic' https://www.happyhousegarden.com/for-pets/is-aloe-vera-toxic-to-pet-cats-dogs-or-other-animals/.

Aloe gel also works to confuse &/or repel fleas (& ticks?) when applied on their coats! (So does 2.5% vinegar---50% each 5% vinegar & water!) I've used both remedies for this purpose successfully, applying either one 2x daily!

It has also been found that many essential oils can be used carefully with cats, and even birds ... you just have to use the correct ones specially prepared for pets in amounts safe for them!

Acupuncture for cats. My acupuncturist was treating me at home (back pain) and I mentioned that my 12yo Manx didn't pee for 4 days, she put 2 needles into her. Immediately after the session my dear cat relieved itself and was more active. She, the cat, is dying, I'll skip the details, but say that she is sleeping most of the time, only sucks fluids from the wet cat's meals and has problems with #2. She is peeing regularly after 3 sessions, but didn't poop for 12 days now. She is like a skeleton without her fur. We did take her to a veterinarian, she took blood and said everything is normal. We decided not to torture the cat with medical interventions. I started red light therapy, I have a mini MitoRed unit which I use for my aches and pains. Interestingly my cat would lie down infront of the unit. 5-6 inches away, and won't leave until she feel it is enough. Usually it is from 10 to 20 min. The longest she went without pooping was 10 days. Today is the 12th day. But she doesn't really eats, only sucks fluids from meals. I give her butter from my palm, a tiny piece, she likes it. Coconut oil is also good, but she prefers butter.

Geranium oil and Pine Needle oil for snotty cats. My cat (well, it's the neighbor's cat but that's another story) has had a sinus infection for 2 years. I tried herbal remedies in it's water bowl off amazon but did not work.

I can't remember where I read it but Geranium oil and Pine needle oil are safe for cats to use.

Recipe:

5 drops Geranium oil

5 drops Pine needle oil

1 teaspoon MCT coconut oil

Apply a few drops with an eyedropper to your cat's nose bridge and the sides of the nose bridge over the sinus plex. She stopped sneezing in a few hours. The next day only a few times so re-apply once daily til they stop sneezing altogether.

Most vets will tell you if your cat has the flu to put a humidifier in a small bathroom (any small room) with the cat for 15-20 minutes and to do this several times a day. Echinacea is supposed to help with the symptoms. I ordered it specifically for pets on amazon (Super Immune-by animal essentials) Also can use (nettle-eyebright, by petwellbeing)& (L-Lysine by Tomlyn). I ask my vet and she said all of these things were good to give and said I could even give Benadryl (1/3 -1/2 tablet encapsulated) up to 3 times per day. If you do not put the piece of Benedryl in a capsule- forget it they will foam and drool and it will be stressful to all!!! It works like a dream when you put it in a small capsule-and after pilling them let them have something wet to eat or drink to make sure pill goes down good. That's important! Hope your babys do well.It can take as many as three weeks for the cat flu to finish its course. Do be watchful as they can get a secondary infection which will require antibiotics. But antibiotics not cure the flu…..it must run its course.

I've had success with L-Lysine. It's an amino acid helpful in treatment of viral infections. I had a cat with a viral growth on one cornea and lysine helped it clear up permanently when nothing else helped. Also colloidal silver is tasteless and can be added to food or water.

Chlorine Dioxide in a spray bottle. There is a documentary called Universal Antidote I HIGHLY recommend you watch it then you can purchase some CD at kvlab.com costs about 30 bucks but will last you 6 months or more depending on how often you use it. Its for humans and animals but CAUTION it is very powerful and you have to get the right dosage. You can buy the book called MMS Health Recovery Guidebook by Jim Humble. The CD guide book gives you protocols to follow but chapter 15 is solely dedicated to animals. It's a one-to-one ratio when mixing the solution ALWAYS so that's not hard to mess up and easy to remember. It truly works miracles. Good luck.

Herpes Remedy Needed for Cat
Posted by Robert (Silver City NM) on 01/23/2022

Hello and I'm sorry you're having problems with your cats.

Try using colloidal silver 20ppm ointment its a strong antiviral and colloidal silver orally with a 3cc syringe. Its tastless so they won't be too bothered by swallowing it. You can also try using chlorine dioxide eye drops and or orally as well. Of course you'd have to know how to make the solution before administering. I've included two images of books on the subject and recommend watching a documentary: www.universalantidote.com. You can buy the solution at kvlab.com. The set of two 4 fl oz bottles cost around 30 dollars but considering you only use one to one ratio drops mixed in distilled water makes it SUPER cost effective (in the long run way more than the colloidal silver but you will have to research it yourself) as it will last you around 3 or more months. I use it regularly myself as a Covid prophylaxis but it has many uses as you will discover once you watch the movie. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. For the eyes it's one drop of sodium chlorite and one drop of hydrochloric acid in a glass container. Let it activate for 30 seconds then add the DISTILLED WATER enough for one fluid ounce, no fountain water the fluoride will deactivate the solution. I saved some of my bottles of 1 fl oz. Of vitamin B drops and washed them out and rinsed them once I was done. And put the solution in there and gave it to my cats. Test it on yourself first if it burns its to strong but mine didn't so yours shouldn't either. I made another one for their ears as well. Make sure you use glass containers and glass droppers. NEVER use metal as this will corrode over time and be added to the solution which isn't good. I tried adding the image of the books if you don't get them they are: Forbidden Health Incurable Was Yesterday by Andreas Ludwig Kalcker(this is the one I reccomend as it has A-Z treatments and the protocols AND MMS Health Recovery Guidbook by Jim Humble with Cari Lloyd. Sorry this was kind of long but I hope this fixes your problems.

There's sugar in the orange kind, Etc.

I just started using colloidal silver to stave of herpes rhino virus and I searched if that was also good for ear mites. A spray or several drops massaged a little twice a day but I just started today so results to follow but it certainly worked to keep them rhino free as they are indoor outdoor.

Colloidal Silver + Colloidal Gold
Posted by Robert (Silver City NM) on 12/19/2021

I had a family of cats that showed up at my door all infested with the herpes rhinovirus. I kept two of the five (sorry I love animals but I'm poor) and gave the other three to the Humane Society. They are indoor-outdoor cats and of course I went to the vet to get treatment for the two that I kept and named them Magnus and Theodore. The vets only know medicine and gave me amoxicillin and eye ointment to administer. Of course it worked but my dilemma was that I don't deny them their freedom so they go out in the neighborhood where they hang out with their friends some of which probably have rhinovirus and Theodore loves to go out more than Magnus and would come back sniffling and sneezing so I'd have to re-adminiter a dose of the left over amoxicillin that I boosted with DMSO to make it more potent so I wouldn't have to give it to him all the time except for once a week

. Antibiotics kill the gut biome in cats just like they do in humans and if you're not paying attention it will slowly deteriorate your cat's health. I also converted a cat carrier into a psuedo hyperbarik chamber that I use to put them in for 15 minutes and gave them nebulized hydrogen peroxide and normal saline with a dissolved vitamin C and Magnesium to help stave off the herpes virus.

Well, it kind of sort of worked UNTIL I bought colloidal silver copper and gold for myself and then researched it for cats. EXCELLENT results. They don't need the nebulizing treatments anymore nor the booster amoxicillin and I don't stress about letting them roam free anymore. I just give them both a 3cc syringe full of half colloidal silver and gold via mouth. They drink it right down and go on their merry way. I LOVE my cats and they make my insides happy. Cheers!

I remember reading somewhere that Iodine is poisonous to cats. Besides, giving MSM orally works very nicely on Ringworm! I just put it in moist cat-food, or spray dry food with water & sprinkle it onto that, and they eat it fine ... because it has no odor, they just smell the food. And they don't really have taste-buds of any kind, so they don't sense what we sense of its bitterness.

Our local Farm Supply Store happened to mention that many of their customers use Non-Medicated (important) chick starter (yes baby chicken feed) as kitty litter. We tried it and it works super well. It even clumps a bit, is a little less dusty and comes in a BIG bag for about $15 CD. We have one cat that likes to eat a bit but it will not hurt them. We transitioned by blending it into clumping clay litter to start and phased out the clay fairly quickly.

I had a cat that is 13 and had had crystals so had extreme medical intervention at 1. I heard they needed iodine and tested out if he liked seaweed. We worked out the dose for him was 1/2 a Nori sheet. He will sit by the cupboard until he gets it. Had bloods done. Fine. No iodonised iodine for him. He loves his seaweed. And I can go to the sea and get it. Just another grass. He also craves fish. Meowing till we feed him some when he smells it. Instinct guides animals. Listen to them.

My cat loves spirulina. My spirulina comes in little candy like triangular tablets. Whenever I take my daily dose, she's there waiting for her share.
She is an indoor outdoor cat and I feel confident that her regular consumption of it (just one tiny tablet a day) is keeping her healthy.

Well, Miss Kitty, now known as Heidi, is doing very well. The only issue she has still other than her weight is that she's pulling out her hair. No more scratching, but she'll pluck hair. I put coconut oil on the spots, which soothes them, but I think this is just an anxiety thing. I ordered her the Feliway(?) pheromone that is supposed to calm cats down, it'll be here Wed. Today I left the door open and she went outside for a bit, stayed on the porch but seemed to enjoy all the smells. I'm gone all day and don't know how to keep her active while I"m away. She has the other cat for company, but I don't know that they do much. I plan to put only a little kibble in the bowl tomorrow. If they finish it all then they wait until I get home for more. I've been putting 1/2 cup am and pm, but I'll reduce it just a little.

Ok, I treated her with the capsaicin pill for fleas. She had a ton of them! so, fleas are now gone, she had a great grooming session. She's still losing clumps of hair, but I expect that's from the previous damage and itching. I will never use diatomaceious earth again! It's dust is so damaging to lungs and it really does nothing for bugs. I used it years ago for chickens and all I got for my trouble was more bugs. It may work to prevent infestation, but not at all for a bad one. She's getting coconut oil daily, just a spoonful in a dish and she's eating it. I also give her goat milk kefir, I can't get raw milk where I am so this is the best I can do. She is doing very well. Now we just have to get her to be friends with the other cat, but that will take time.

I just rescued a cat. the elderly owner passed in July and this cat has been alone except for someone stopping in to feed and scoop every other day since then. She has been pulling hair out, but that's not the issue because it should get better now she's with me. She was perfect from noon until 9 last night, then started scratching.

As I brushed her, I saw black specks but didn't see any actual fleas (so I need to treat all her soft toys and scratching post, can you tell me the best way?). She also is very dandruffy. I had put out the food that she came with, but she did get some treats that my cat was getting. Allergies? She's on Iams food, as is my cat. Also, I had put out that fresh step crystal litter, so could that do it? She came with a nasty cat box and a new box of arm and hammer litter, so I've cleaned the box and put that litter out for her. I"m going to see if I can get her in to my vet asap, since they had no clue about shots or any other health checkups and she's very overweight (30 lbs?).

Please advise. I don't have tons of money for special food or treatments and really don't want to give her back (terrible life! ), but will do what I can for her. I've had cats all my adult life and never had one that scratched like this. I do keep my cats on flea/tick monthly treatments because I get eaten up by fleas, and I know this isn't the best for the cat but either they get treatment or I don't have cats. And my cat goes outside and brings in ticks all spring and summer.

Thanks.

One of the cats I used to have always had a runny eye.The vet said it was a blocked tear duct. One weekend when the town vet wasn't available, she ended up with her eye swollen shut and very swollen. We were going to take her to the vet the following Monday.

I googled it and found out it was a reoccurring herpes virus probably passed on to her from her mother. The EarthClinic sight suggested ACV diluted with water in a 1:3 solution.Dip a cotton ball and squeeze the mixture onto the scruff of the neck between the shoulder blades until the area is wet but not dripping. Then I also gently wiped her closed eye with it.

Not only was she completely cured in a few days, the virus never bothered her again.

The first time I gave my cat spirulina he gobbled it up and then sat there with his eyes bugged out looking around like he just took his first hit of acid and was seeing the world for the first time.

Dosing: 1/2 teaspoon of powder in a pile on the linoleum kitchen floor

Now I mix a dash in his wet food when he looks like he needs some excitement.

He also loves brewer's yeast and the diatomaceous earth (+ - 1/4 tsp/day) seems to be reducing the cyst in his ear. I'll get back to you about that if it goes away entirely.

My cat disappeared in the house for 8 hours. I finally found her, foaming at the mouth, with a dirty bottom, dilated pupils, cold and panting late at night. Totally lethargic and not eating or drinking. In the morning I went to the vet and they said the tests of all kinds came back negative and that all they could do is a saline drip and antibiotics. I said yes to that. By evening she was a bit more alive, but still eyes dilated and panting, just warmer and more hydrated. They sent her home with me to die. This is when I went on a search for natural remedies, as the vet had no diagnosis or any ideas. The saline drip gave me time to think about it. So the first thing is I used CBD oil to get the cat to have its first nap in two days, and she woke up so thirsty and even had a bite of food. Still panting lethargic and eyes dilated, but hungry and thirsty! Then I read that panting or shortness of breath was caused by a lack of iron. I asked the vet and they had already checked iron levels and hers were fine. Either way, I made a cup of blackstrap molasses water, and readministered CBD. When she woke up thirsty again I offered both water and molasses water...and she wanted molasses water. She laid in the same place all night. I woke up in the middle of the night and she was missing...I got scared and called for her... And she jumped on the bed and let me pet her and wanted out of my room. The next morning I woke up and there she was with regular eyes, and regular breathing, and wanted to go down to see all her animal friends and had already cleaned her fur. It was a miracle and the vets had no idea how that happened. Thanks earthclinic!

I had a 6 y. O. cat with bad mega colon. I gave him 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of miralax in his food. He also had a spasmodic motility med to move his bowels. Occasional rectal laxatives doesn't really work great like the miralax did. It worked wonders.

Hi Joyce, I had a kitty with mega colon. Although his vet termed it ideopathic, I believe it was due to spinal problems he had when we got him as a kitten. As he aged, he began experiencing occasional severe constipation, which became chronic. We had to do enemas for him at home, and sometimes take him in for more extensive procedures. Poor baby. Initially we tried pumpkin, then lactulose, and finally Cisipride. Though I prefer natural therapies for myself and my animals, the Cisipride finally made his life comfortable. It causes peristalsis in the colon and allows them to have a bowel movement. This drug was taken off the market for humans years ago due to it having some serious side effects. As I recall, the vets were somewhat reluctant to prescribe enough for our kitty's needs, and I was able to find it online from overseas. I do believe it made the last years of his life much more comfortable. All the best. PS If you do an enema at home (takes 2 people and is not at all easy), NEVER use a prepared enema solution, such as Fleet brand on a cat. It is deadly! We used warm water with a tiny bit of soap.

I don't have a cat but I read A LOT. Dr. Batmanghelidj wrote about pets using specific salt ratio in water and its in earth clinic somewhere but I can't find the ratio....a book in my pile has it somewhere. Anyway he used it to treat many pet diseases. Sea salt with minerals in it. So many amazing testimonials from people who used it. Salt works like an antihistamine because histamine is caused by a mineral salt/water imbalance. salt holds water in place and water helps our intestines move the food through to the exit port. Need the right ratio to do this.

Anyone have any ideas on what to give a middle age cat with something called mega colon? I have spent thousands at the vet but nothing seems to help her. She has a hard time going to the bathroom and when she does it seems to hurt and is bloody sometimes. Hard as a rock mostly but sometimes very soft. The only thing we do is put Metamucil in her food. Any other ideas?

Blackstrap Molasses

Kim, I would give your kitty bone meal with Vit. D (the D to absorb the Ca). The biochemist & nutritionist Adelle Davis said arthritis is always a calcium deficiency. Bone meal is the best & most natural source of Ca. It rid my elderly mother of arthritis in her neck. It was so severe she couldn't turn her neck to the left at all; doctors said there was no cure. The bone meal with Vit. D completely resolved it.

Hi everyone, My cat is 14 years old and in the past two years the arthritis in his back legs has gotten really bad. I feed him non-grain organic hard food (chicken soup for the soul) as well as organic soft food (taste of the wild), and also give him two cosequin supplements a day. I also have heating pads (on the lowest heat) on his special pillow in my room, and other places around the house. I try to get him to play, and am doing everything I can to help. My question is: Would a little bit of blackstrap molasses be helpful? I know it is for dogs, but is it for cats? I mean like putting some on your finger and putting it in his mouth. I did that once a day for a few days and saw improvement but then read it may be bad for cats so stopped. Also - does anyone recommend a non-grain hard food for their cat that is also tasty and organic? Thank you so much!

Goat Milk Kitten Formula

Kitten Formula from powdered goat's milk

2 scoops meyenburg powdered goats milk + 1 egg yolk

Run just enough boiling water over yolk to sterilize. Blend or shake in a jar according to ratios listed on can. Don't make it too watery and let it warm up to room temperature before serving. Kittens are temperature sensitive. Refrigerate.

My ex didn't get his beautiful queen spayed after the first litter. She had been a great momma to her first litter and let them suckle up until 4 months! At which point, couldn't stand the sight of them any longer and spent all of her time away from the house.

She gave birth to her 2nd litter somewhere outside and finally brought them to the house after a few weeks, starving and flea infested. Her nipples were dry. She wasn't as interested

I tried A LOT of things until I stumbled on to the goat's milk recipe. They say not to feed kittens cow's milk, but then why is the kitten formula cow milk based? Anyway, the powdered goats milk has folic acid added. That's a good thing.

If they don't like the egg, try it without.

I also fed my kitten probiotic plain yogurt and little bits of butter. I splurge on milk products and get the best I can afford, grassfed, organic, and raw if possible.

She was the sickliest, the runt of the litter (I wasn't even sure she would make it) and at five months is doing great!

I have spent at least $1000. on Vets, with Bloodwork, antibionic Tresaderm, my cat of 15 yrs. he was dying, The Vet had tried to talk me into putting him to sleep, but I went to Earth Clinic Pets and after ACV rinses, coconut oil, Activated charcoal, colloidal silver, sea buckhorn berry oil, wheat grass, caster oil, flax seed oil, blackstrap molasses, Blue Buffulo, fresh Tuna, spring water in a fountain, trips to the park in his stroller. He is 50% better (Earth Clinic, Thank you so much) Still there is something wrong with his one ear, I think there is a connection to the cataract in his eye on that same side of his face and he still breaths very heavy, PLEASE HELP???

Aloe and Laser

Please avoid aloe vera with cats. Like so many other seemingly harmless things, it is toxic to cats. ALL of it. Please do a search and look up ANYTHING before administering it to your cat. They lack detoxifying enzymes and cannot detoxify things that are fine for humans and dogs. Please avoid essential oils as well. I have aloe plants that I place where my cat cannot reach them. Trust me, it is not safe for cats.

What I keep reading about Morgellons isn't one of the first thing it destroys is your immune system in your gut so probiotics are one of the major things that your cat probably means that might help him. That's the best advice I've got and also I've read a lot about the diatomaceous earth food grade ... y u can put it on cat and eat it

DMSO
Posted by Gwen (Australia) on 09/21/2017

DMSO is a good pain killer. It also works as a carrier of other medications straight into the actual tissue/blood/brain barrier. It can only carry through particles that are extremely small. I have my doubts with the coconut oil as I think it has difficulty with oils. Not sure about the apple cider vinegar. If you use honey, only Manuka honey has beneficial health qualities. I am using dmso with chinese herbs, liquid vitamin e, and cell salts prescribed by my holistic vet. I paint it onto the actual osteosarcoma in my cat's mouth. You MUST seek holistic vet advice first. It is such a strong carrier that you can easily overdose your animal if you don't know what you are doing. I just bought a book DMSO, Natures Healer to read, suggest you do the same.

I am a strong advocate of DMSO but ONLY when it is used with the advice of an holistic vet or an allopathic vet with experience.
