On very rare occasions, I get a sore tongue, not burning and not white, just along the side or under the tongue, it gets sore and anything tart like lemonade makes it worse. The only thing I've ever used is powdered alum. My grandmother told me of this, and I think she used this spice when making pickles. It is a white powder and all I know is that it works every time and I only need to just dampen my finger in water, dip it into the powder and apply it to the sore area and it heals it after one application.
Hope this helps someone else, what an easy fix for something that can make your miserable, especially when trying to eat.

Like your grandmother, we always used alum to make pickles crisp. I finally learned that you can use pickle crisp (calcium chloride) to make your pickles crisp without using alum. The pickle folks kept that a secret for many years.
Calcium chloride is a desiccant in that it removes water from the air. It is the product that folks use in their clothes closet to keep the moisture down so their garments do not mildew.
I think you are safe in your use of alum.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda
I got out of the VA hospital a day before Thanksgiving. I could swallow baby food and I had a hard time swallowing water. They had me on Prilosec for a couple of years due to acid reflux. A number of factors (stress and aspirin) wrong diet, put me over the edge. In the hospital I spoke to several gastro-intestinal doctors and mentioned my burning tongue. None of them had ever heard of such a thing.They all kept refering to a possible metalic taste in my mouth. They scoped my stomach took a biopsy and told me that I had a lot of Peptic ulcers in my stomach and a condition called "Eosinophilic Esophagitis" in my esophagas. I have not taken these drugs, and I have resorted to natural cures (Kefer, aloe vera juice, leafy green soups, baked squash, yogurt, none of which has seemed to cure the burning tongue that occurs minutes after I eat something. I have started on your ACV and baking soda. I can already tell it's working. I also have itching all over my body that flares up from time to time, usually after I eat something. The itching is very intense. I have been taking "Doxapin" for it for about 7 years. Now I am not taking any alopathic medicine. Hi, I just read you post and when you mentioned the itching all over your body I had to reply. I had the same problem and I'm better now. Look for a Naturopathic doctor in your area and have done a "Delay Food Sensitivity" test. This test isn't the same as food allergy, but tells you which foods your body has a hard time digesting and every time you eat one of these foods the symptoms can stay on your body for almost one month. Also eat organic as much as you can. I hope it helps.
I have a question about the ACV and baking soda recipe. My burning tongue is a result of chemotherapy which I thankfully completed in early December 2016. I have tried many things to help this uncomfortable feeling on my tongue but am open to any and all suggestions. How much of each do you use and how do you administer it? I've been a big fan of Earth Clinic for many years and had much success with many of the posted remedies for different ailments (I have type 2 diabetes and HBP).
After a recent round of antibiotics for a upper respiratory infection left a nasty white coating on my tongue, I drank the following: 8 oz cup hot tea (I used decaf Earl Gray), 1 tbs of ACV with honey to taste along with 1 drop of Lugol's with my breakfast. By the end of first evening, most of the white coating was gone, by the end of my second day, my tongue was back to normal, no more white stuff! I am so amazed that something so simple cleared up my nasty tongue so quickly!

Thank you Earth Clinic and thank you Yaakova for this post!! I came to this website after miserably enduring about 2 weeks of an inflamed, bright red and cracked tongue. It was awful by day but at night the dryness was terrible and preventing sound sleep.
Yesterday, I tried this recommendation with a large mug of green tea, ACV and 2 drops of Lugol's Solution 2% plus honey. There was immediate relief! PTL!! So I continued to sip, swish and swallow. The irritation was cut in half and I slept a little better last night. Today I am continuing this treatment and experiencing immediate relief again. Hoping for a complete cure!

This sounds like you have a B vitamin deficiency. You should get Adele Davis's book 'Lets Eat Right To Keep Fit.' On page 65 she describes the various effect B deficiencies cause to the appearance of the Tongue.
I read on Earthclinic about brushing the tongue with salt but decided to try something less irritating instead. Plain baking soda works! I bought a tongue brush at the pharmacy (a little rake-shaped toothbrush for the tongue), dipped it into a bit of baking soda which you can buy at any supermarket, and just gently scraped my tongue with it. I scrape and rinse the brush, scrape and rinse again, and add more baking soda if I need to. Tastes pretty bad and makes me gag sometimes, especially when trying to brush the back of my tongue, but after rinsing it all away, my tongue is a healthy pale pink colour. ALL of the white is gone. I have to repeat every few days because the white coating comes back but it really helps! My mouth always feels fresh and very healthy for a couple of days afterwards and then I repeat again when I see signs of the white coating coming back. Works every time.
Basil really helped with my burning tongue, just chew it for awhile, I chewed on the strings of it from my Herb garden, it numbed it and took away the burning feeling, but if I would eat or drink something the tongue would burn again. I definately cannot eat anything hot or spicey or it sets my tongue on fire. I also tried popcycles, it was like chewing ice but better and yummier, suger-free gum helps alot but I got tired of chewing gum! I told my doctor but seems like he didn't care or did not know what to do. I am going to go to my dentist to see if he has any anwers. I might get a test for Celiac disease to see if that is what it is, I eat alot of wheat bread??? You might say that after 1 year of having to endure a white tongue I have developed a real obsession in trying to find a cure for it. I have tried just about every method described on this website but without success and not even temporary success. White tongue for me proved to be the greatest health challenge of my life as this was the result of 2 major heartburn, a fever, and a little jaundice. If only people can start taking this matter more seriously about the importance of maintaining minimum stomach acid levels in their body then they would not experience half the symptons they are now currently struggling with. With sufficient HCL did you known that Calcium, iron, zinc and potassium can be absorbed more efficiently into the body. It is incredibly unfortunate to those who spend a fortune on supplements without realizing that their body can only absorb perhaps as much as 20% of the substance because of low stomach acid. A safer and equally effective solution is to use apple cider vinegar with your meals. Lemon juice from a freshly squeezed lemon is also equally good to help digestion. 1 tblspn of either or in a small amount of water or pomegranate juice is perfect. Other juices are not really as good as pomegrante juice as pomegranate juice is so high in antioxidants that it is in itself a mineral supplement, and other juices are not as safe in that they have high fructose corn syrup etc in them. This recommendation is very effective in elminating digestion problems. It truly works, give it a try. Good luck, Ellen
WHEN SHOULD YOU START USING BETAINE HCL ?
Here is a simply way to determine if you really have a serious low acidic stomach and I must caution you it is not pretty to talk about!
(1):When there is much undigested food particles in your stools.
(2):Your stools becomes small in size, consistently yellowish in color and mostly sinking.
(3):Whenever you consume fat or meat, your stools are very smelly. The main role of Stomach acid is to convert proteins to peptides for easier assimilation, stimulate the flow of bile and pancreatic enzymes.
(4):Excessive stomach gas and bloating after a meal. I was suffering from all of the above and clearly saw concrete results from my stool appearance as being floating, larger in size, dark brown colored with the consistency of toothpaste. I'm a bit confused about your theory. You mentioned that ACD works because it's acidic. But some other guys here said that because it's alkalizing. What is the more plausible theory?
Also regarding H. Pylori, HCL presence is crucial for the bacteria and in the rescue therapy, HIGH DOSE of PPI are required to eradicate the bacteria and disturbed the biofilms. You don't think that HCL will just help the bacteria to increase in colonies rather than kill it?

To answer your first question is that ACV is only alkaline at the tail end of the digestive process. The same applies to lemon juice as well. Initially when ACV is ingested it is at this point extremely acidic in the stomach and becomes quite capable of reducing and even preventing heartburn. But that is really a band aid solution because ACV does not have the same vital chemical features HCL is capable of. As mentioned earlier ACV works just because it reduces the PH value of the stomach being the main trigger mechanism for keeping the valve shut against escaping acid into the esophagus. That is why it is so effective in preventing heartburn. You could have just as well used another type of vinegar with the same results as long as it has an extremely low PH value. The pylori bacteria can survive only because it is capable of hiding inside the stomach lining away from stomach acid. HCL will serve to only make it very difficult for the pylori bacteria to move around in the stomach and thus render it almost completely inactive.
On the other hand, very low stomach acid will allow this bacteria to navigate very freely and that is how the bacteria can do most harm to the body! There are of course specific treatment programs just for the Pylori bacteria that does not involve HCL and should be followed to eradicate it at once if its existence is confirmed inside the stomach. Sufficient stomach acid only serves to decrease its mobility inside the stomach. I hope this has answered all of your questions.

The rescue therapy against H. Pylori requires HIGH DOSAGE OF PPI to expose H. Pylori. The first treatment against H. Pylori was amoxicillin alone but that treatment had very low rate of success. Studies after that showed that when amoxicillin was coupled with an PPI or acid reducer, the eradication rate increased incredibly. That can be understood because H. Pylori NEEDS the acid to survive. The ammonia it produces increases the inflammation of the stomach and it's concentration dependent which means more acid more ammonia. Also HCL makes H. Pylori reproduce to have more colonies to handle the acid. Adding HCL to an infected stomach with H. Pylori is adding gasoline to the fire.
Tommy, I have the Pylori bacteria from a blood test only and have been on BETAINE HCL for many months now and I can state firmly that I never experience the type of stomach pain attributed to the common Pylori infection. I will know soon if this bacteria is in fact active in my system from a urea breath test that I will be taking in 3 weeks from now. If the test is positive then that will explain why my stomach produces such little acid and put in doubt your theory that the Pylori bacteria thrive in an acidic environment. The internal structure of the stomach lining is of course much less acidic than the stomach itself. How do you explain the fact that the Pylori bacteria always prefer to live and grow inside the stomach lining being the main reason behind the inability of our immune system to destroy it ? Thanks
I have a huge problem that has haunted me since Dec 2009. I believe my issue was induced by a medication. I was taking without prescription, given by a friend, a weight loss pill. I was having a pill on empty stomach, a day. After like 4 days I started having few symptoms like: dry mouth, heartburn, I felt like my mouth was burning, insomnia, I felt something stuck in my throat, nauseous like I wanted to vomit.. I told my friend I wanted to stop it, but since she was taking it too for a month she assured me those symptoms will go away in another week, so I continued taking it since I wanted to lose weight badly, and after the second week I couldn't take it anymore! :( My mouth was on fire!! I looked in the mirror and I saw cuts on my tongue! It was white coated, specially once I wake up it was like white and as day goes by it looks better.. So I got so nervous and scared of what was happening to me, and I stopped the pills. I prayed that this would go away. But everything did except my mouth issues! My tongue was still cracked, and soooooooo dry. The saliva was so sticky, and the taste of my mouth was different. I still have all this symptoms till now. Sometimes I get like a tingling sensation - I describe it as if I have fireworks on my tongue and exploding slowly! - weird but true.
On May 2010, after waiting for feel better, I went to a Gastro and had endoscopy, he said I had extra acid and put me on Nexium. After a month I went to my home country and went to an ENT, he had an upped endoscopy done and told me I had to control my acid, and prescribed Pariet and Nasonex which is a nasal spray. I had to have for 3 months 2 Pariet pills and 2 sprays of Nasonex on nose, and last 3 months no Nasonex, and 1 Pariet pill. He promised me I would be healed by then! But sadly I wasn't, and I live miserable still.
In July 2011 I went back home and also saw a thyroid doctor, my mom said what if it was thryroid related, he then had blood tests done ruled out any thyroid problem. Susan based on your symptoms let's start with the following simple remedies that should improve your overall health.
You must first drink plenty of water, as much as you can.
You must absolutely take the stomach acid test whenever you feel bloated and unable to digest your food. This is an important step as it will confirm if whether or not your stomach is producing enough acid to control the pathogens in your body.
The only way to determine if you are secreting a proper amount of acid only when you feel you are not digesting your food properly or feeling bloated is to ingest a least 6 capsules Betaine HCL with plenty of water on a FULL stomach and notice the results after about 5 minutes. If your stomach suddenly feels very light and free from any pain then all along your stomach was not secreting enough acid to kill off the excess pathogens that appears to have invaded your body. IMMEDIATELY STOP if you feel worse after taking HCL Betaine. Make sure you use good quality HCL tablets. If taking Betaine HCL does not improve your condition then switch to ACV instead as this has the ability to kill off the type of pathogens often not possible by using Betaine HCL.
You must increase your pro-biotic intake by eating plenty of Yogurt more often.
Obviously your immune system is taking quite a hit so I recommend you surf on the internet and find what type of food are well known to rebuild the immune system and stick to eating these types of food for a long period of time until your problem goes away. Hello Susan, good to hear from you again. Only after you have tried Betaine HCL will you have a better idea on what's going on inside your stomach. You ingest 6 capsules or more all at once before or during each meal but never on an empty stomach otherwise you will experience heartburn unless you drink plenty of water afterwards. In the meantime, you can start taking 2 tablespoon of ACV in 1 glass of water or more if you are able to locate this product in your area. Let us know how you react to ACV since that would give us a clue on the acidity levels of your stomach until you receive your HCL Betaine capsules. Another thing you can also try, in the meantime, is eating pickles after each meal.
I took on empty stomach 2TBSP of ACV with 1/4 tsp of baking soda, I used Ted's recipe, but I dont recall feeling any burning sensation. After drinking it in a cup of water, I had my breakfast which was 1 c of skimmed milk with cereal at work and now I am having a little discomfort. What could be wrong? Does it take a few times to show up? I don't want to feel hopeless.

Please don't try six capsules at once. I realize I'm a little late from the date you posted this. But, that's not how you do that. You start out with one capsule with a meal, then if there's no burning you take two capsules with the next meal. You can keep doing that, or you can raise it up to three capsules per meal.
Mandy, you are over reacting about the danger of taking too many capsules at one time. In fact, the more, the better since it will allow much better absorption of key nutrients such as Calcium and Iron that your body constantly needs. The trick to avoiding any stomach burns is simply to do what I do and that is take YOGURT afterwards. I once ingested 10 capsules at one time with plenty of yogurt afterwards and believe me I felt a pleasant warm sensation in my stomach as a result of balancing the PH level in my stomach.
The results were immediate afterwards since I got rid of the feeling that food seemed to be stuck in my stomach. Furthermore, after about 15 minutes or so I felt so light as if my stomach was empty but without the feeling of being hungry. You need to understand that stomach acid actually stimulates all your digestive organs to functioning at an optimum level so important for maintaining a good healthy digestive system.
I don't regard taking HCL Betaine as a cure but rather as a supplement because I realize that the aging process will, over time naturally reduce my stomach acid. That in the long run would only compromise my health and thus reduce my life expectancy.

I am reading your posts because I am having the same symptoms. I recently had a bout with Bronchitis, and it caused laryngitis I was prescribed a round of antibiotics, and when it was finished I has a very hoarse voice and a burning and tingling tongue. I have just been to see an ENT that was very well recommended. He showed me my voice box on a screen in his office, and there was evidence of acid reflux that was not allowing my vocal cords to heal. I'm going to copy what it says about "Black, hairy tongue": "An overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth can cause discoloration of the tongue. Reading many posts over the last year and a half I could not help noticed how so many people are suffereing from white tounge syndrome. I to have suffered from white tongue just at a time when I suddenly experience major heartburns for the first time in my life. During that period of time I can remember that my tongue was gradually becoming white until in a matter of days it became COMPLETELY white. I took this matter very lightly thinking that I can easily find a product to cure it from my local health food store. Boy was I in for a surprize!!! I must have tried 10 different products from placing RAW garlic on my tongue to scraping it using hydrogen peroxide! I visited a couple of dentists and each denied there was a problem primarely because they did not want to expose their ignorance on this matter.
After a year and a half, my tougue has finally return to its normal red color. The purpose of this post is to explain the general theory behind white tongue and suggest a single treatment that has worked for me in my particular case which may not necessairly work for everyone. The body releases its toxins through many avenues, the tongue being one of them. The white mucous is really the bodys nutural clear mucuous filled with dead bacterias. Those bacterias originate from the digestive system since the tougue is connected to it.
The only way that you can cure white tounge is that you must first go through a complete detox program. Then gradually your tongue will become red again and the color of your urine clear. Betaine HCL and oil of oregano are very powerful digestive desinfectant that you must consume along with A VERY AGGRESSIVE DIET OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND NO MORE JUNK FOOD. I had/have the same problem as you as far as my memory goes back. I'm now 23 and have a memory of me asking my mom, ''why is my tongue so white?! '' and her answer was ''o, it's nothing, it will go away on its own honey don't worry''. Of course it never did. Since the age 12 I became very aware of my condition and was very ashamed of it. Hello Steven, its nice to hear from someone with similar digestive issues as mine and always happy to share my success with. I have been using pure HCL Betaine for close to 2 years now and would like to share with others in this forum some of my very unique experience with this product.
First of all, ACV seems to be the most popular product in this forum and although I have used it quite extensively in the past, Betaine HCL is by far more superior then everyone is led to believe only if you know how and when to use it. The reason is that Betaine HCL has three major properties that no other natural product of its kind can surpass: (1) helps to absorb major nutrients such calcium, iron and zinc. (2) stimulates the pancreas and gallbladder to function properly thereby reducing the risk of diabetes and gallstones (3) controls bacterias and fungi against the spreading of toxicity to all parts of the body which can result in the occurrence of white tongue and its associated symptoms.
(1) is significant because the lack of absorption for calcium means that it will solidify and eventually be deposited elsewhere in the body which in the long run can cause major damage to many specific parts of the body. Everyone known that lack of iron in the body causes many health problems. As for zinc, lack of it would result into a weakening of the immune system which offers major protection against all sort of diseases including cancer
(2) major cause of gallstone is the lack of gallbladder stimulation that result in excessive deposit of gallstone which if left to accumulate in the gallbladder can be life threatening should a stone permanently block the main bile duct that would allow enzymes to eat away at your pancreas. I know this is an old post but I found it looking for tongue/oral issues. I have had constant white patches on my tongue and inside my cheeks. Looking back, I've had stomach issues my whole life, starting at age 9 being diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. I have no idea what pharmaceuticals were used but I was prescribed a bland diet and 2 tablespoons of Mylanta every 3 hours around that clock for about 3 months. It was the 70's. Hi Mike, Thank you for all of the information that you provided. Last year, I started suffering from severe sinus problems. Went to doc and was prescribed amoxicillin and a nasal steroid. Felt better immediately. After the 10 days, started to feel worse with acid reflux and a pain under my ribs. Took another round of stronger antibiotics and it didn't help. The reflux and pain became unbearable. My husband wanted to travel to Italy, but I couldn't--Italy and food are synonymous, and I couldn't eat anything. I was experiencing severe hair loss, my knuckles were swelling up, and my arms were getting very saggy. My sinuses were so inflamed that my whole face was numb.
In July, I did extensive searching for hair loss and found Suzanne Sommers blog about hair loss and hypochlorydia--lack of stomach acid. Ran to the store and bought betaine hcl. Immediate relief. Even my sinuses felt lighter. Within a week I didn't feel like sleeping all of the time. Within 2 weeks, we booked our trip to Italy and departed on September 1. Hi Christine, I am glad that you feel much better these days. Just want to mention that the real connection between hair loss and low stomach acid is your body's inability to properly absorb Zinc which is a very important element for hair growth.
Only with the right levels of HCL in your stomach can your body absorbed this important element as well as iron which would also explain why you always felt so tire in the past but for no apparent reasons.
You might want to investigate further as to why your stomach produces so little acid. If you are a confirmed case of gastritis like myself which is stomach inflammation then that would definitely explain it. Acid cannot be produced normally if your stomach is inflamed so you have no alternative but to supplement your stomach acid with Betaine HCL until your body gets rid of the inflammation.
In the vast majority of the cases involved low stomach acid production is usually caused by gastritis. Acid reflux follows from the build up of pathogens that would normally be controlled by sufficient levels of stomach acid.
If tests indicate that you do have gastritis then one very effective remedy I know of is MSM which has worked very well for me in the past. Make sure that it is not contaminated with heavy metals as this would make your condition even much worse.
Shop around to make sure it is 99% pure and then try the home test to confirm that you do not have a cheap substitute.
Hello Mike, I've been reading all your posts and everything you say makes so much sense. With his posts finally realized that my whole problem is not excessive acidity more than lack of acidity, it is necessary to realize the entire physiology of the body, it is a machine so refined and intelligent. I tried everything and anything and nothing resulted from ACV, oregano oil, MSM, milk thistle, artichoke, borotuto, diatomaceous earth, clay, charcoal, pepper mint, garlic, turmeric, vitamin complexes, diet lemon, cat's claw and so many other things, never smoked, never drank alcohol and could not understand why I am increasingly worse. I have a healthy diet since I was 13 years and now I'm 41. I think it all started to have put 13 dental amalgams in my teeth. The Mercury is an enzyme inhibitor and a heavy metal that provides that the Candida is to stay in the body. From there developed bulimia, which is explained by a body that is in constant stress, the adrenal system is compromised and high levels of cortisol in the bloodstream. I finally realized how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. I also hope to go on time ... because I am very ill, but tomorrow morning I'll buy Betaine Hcl. Soon I will give news.

Supplements are great but do not have the power of healing that we all seek in this case, the problems of indigestion, white tongue is a symptom of it, polyps and sores in the nose, gases, sadness, anxiety, depression. Do not waste time and money on what does not work when we need something magical. But I'll post my experience with betaine.

Fissured Tongue Remedies
I have read the posts on your site but was wondering if this is also part of the fissured tongue. I know have the fissured tongue as well as the burning lips. It is especially hard to eat because foods hurt my tonque and I am more or less drinking milk, eating yogart and bananas. I saw a Dr.yesterday and he has given me a "magic mouthwash" that is supposed to work on me if it is a fungal. I am to use the mouthwash for 2 weeks. I am also not able to brush my teeth because the toothpaste hurts my tongue. Has anyone experienced any of this?

Yes, I have had the same the problem on and off for 4 years.. it seems as if my tongue and sometimes my lips are eroded.. Vitamin B supplements help, but healing is slow.. the problem is recurring after a few months.
I had a very red, sore tongue for over a year. Went to an ENT who tried antibiotics & also zinc. Nothing helped. I eventually had a spectracell blood analysis done to determine what vitamins I was deficient in, although this was done for general health and not related to the sore tongue issue. As it turned out I was deficient in 5 vitamins including folate. When reading up on the symptoms of folate deficiency I was surprised to see sore tongue as one of them. After taking folate for just a few days the red, tender tongue was cured. I was also deficient in B12 which I see others have indicated might be involved w/ sore tongue issues. Foods to Avoid
For years my sister had a very painful red and cracked tongue and a sore mouth. She was prescribed various medications but none of them helped. Then she had her amalgam fillings replaced with porcelain, but still no relief.
One day someone suggested it might be caused by food additives namely sulphites. She eliminated all foods with E numbers (E220-E228) and since then she's had no more sore tongue or mouth.
