This sounds like you have a B vitamin deficiency. You should get Adele Davis's book 'Lets Eat Right To Keep Fit.' On page 65 she describes the various effect B deficiencies cause to the appearance of the Tongue.

I read on here that several people were looking for a cure for black tongue - in my case this occurred after aggressive antibiotic treatment including metronidazole which some people do claim causes this horrible side effect, (amongst many! ). I suspected candida being involved and based my approach on that. The colour was similar to liquorice stain and involved the whole top of the tongue. There was no way to clean it off and I felt disgusting with it. The blackness has only just cleared away, it took 4 weeks, and I don't know which part of my regimen played the biggest part - if any- but here's what I did:

Diet very low sugar and carb, mostly veg really but with small amounts of fish and eggs. No wheat in any form. No dairy except for live yoghourt, plain, which I find quite difficult to eat but easier when grated garlic and turmeric mixed in - as a kind of 'dressing' for the salady diet. Celery seemed very 'cleansing' and healing.

I took acidophilus capsules at every meal. I also did a tongue clean after every meal - it was quite unpleasant but seemed useful, ACV on a piece of towelling (to be burnt or thrown away after single use - cut up clean old towel for this) wiped over the tongue as thoroughly as bearable, followed by a rinse with warm water. I also took ACV twice a day. I changed to a bicarb toothpaste and after cleaning mouth and tongue each morning and night I soothed the mouth with coconut oil - swill for as long as possible then spit out. It has taken a month but my tongue is pink again now.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START USING BETAINE HCL ?

Here is a simply way to determine if you really have a serious low acidic stomach and I must caution you it is not pretty to talk about!

(1):When there is much undigested food particles in your stools.

(2):Your stools becomes small in size, consistently yellowish in color and mostly sinking.

(3):Whenever you consume fat or meat, your stools are very smelly. The main role of Stomach acid is to convert proteins to peptides for easier assimilation, stimulate the flow of bile and pancreatic enzymes.

(4):Excessive stomach gas and bloating after a meal. I was suffering from all of the above and clearly saw concrete results from my stool appearance as being floating, larger in size, dark brown colored with the consistency of toothpaste. That is considered as normal stool for a healthy individual. Since then my stool has never reappeared as yellowish in color! The subject of gallstone is an explosive subject on the internet. Did you know that the low PH of Stomach acid actually STIMULATES the liver to producing bile? Low stomach acid causes the liver to be sluggish which in turn leads to the formation of dangerous gallstones in the gall bladder because bile does not flow properly into the gallbladder causing thickening of bile fluid that eventually produces stones.

I had a very red, sore tongue for over a year. Went to an ENT who tried antibiotics & also zinc. Nothing helped. I eventually had a spectracell blood analysis done to determine what vitamins I was deficient in, although this was done for general health and not related to the sore tongue issue. As it turned out I was deficient in 5 vitamins including folate. When reading up on the symptoms of folate deficiency I was surprised to see sore tongue as one of them. After taking folate for just a few days the red, tender tongue was cured. I was also deficient in B12 which I see others have indicated might be involved w/ sore tongue issues. Hope this helps someone out there!

On very rare occasions, I get a sore tongue, not burning and not white, just along the side or under the tongue, it gets sore and anything tart like lemonade makes it worse. The only thing I've ever used is powdered alum. My grandmother told me of this, and I think she used this spice when making pickles. It is a white powder and all I know is that it works every time and I only need to just dampen my finger in water, dip it into the powder and apply it to the sore area and it heals it after one application.

Hope this helps someone else, what an easy fix for something that can make your miserable, especially when trying to eat.

Thank you Earth Clinic and thank you Yaakova for this post!! I came to this website after miserably enduring about 2 weeks of an inflamed, bright red and cracked tongue. It was awful by day but at night the dryness was terrible and preventing sound sleep.

Yesterday, I tried this recommendation with a large mug of green tea, ACV and 2 drops of Lugol's Solution 2% plus honey. There was immediate relief! PTL!! So I continued to sip, swish and swallow. The irritation was cut in half and I slept a little better last night. Today I am continuing this treatment and experiencing immediate relief again. Hoping for a complete cure!

Reading many posts over the last year and a half I could not help noticed how so many people are suffereing from white tounge syndrome. I to have suffered from white tongue just at a time when I suddenly experience major heartburns for the first time in my life. During that period of time I can remember that my tongue was gradually becoming white until in a matter of days it became COMPLETELY white. I took this matter very lightly thinking that I can easily find a product to cure it from my local health food store. Boy was I in for a surprize!!! I must have tried 10 different products from placing RAW garlic on my tongue to scraping it using hydrogen peroxide! I visited a couple of dentists and each denied there was a problem primarely because they did not want to expose their ignorance on this matter.

After a year and a half, my tougue has finally return to its normal red color. The purpose of this post is to explain the general theory behind white tongue and suggest a single treatment that has worked for me in my particular case which may not necessairly work for everyone. The body releases its toxins through many avenues, the tongue being one of them. The white mucous is really the bodys nutural clear mucuous filled with dead bacterias. Those bacterias originate from the digestive system since the tougue is connected to it.

The only way that you can cure white tounge is that you must first go through a complete detox program. Then gradually your tongue will become red again and the color of your urine clear. Betaine HCL and oil of oregano are very powerful digestive desinfectant that you must consume along with A VERY AGGRESSIVE DIET OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND NO MORE JUNK FOOD. You must rebuild your immune by changing your eating habits to largely include fresh vegetables.

One very noticeable impact on my condition was the consumption of RAW cabbage during each meal for long periods of time. This vegetable is unique in the sense that it does effectively kill pathogens in your body and at the same feed the good bacterias. Looking back its been the worst illness I have ever tried to cure that prove very costly in the end in terms of supplements which everyone knows are extremely expensive at the health food store. In dealing with white tongue you must use common sense and ingest all foods that have the reputation of killing bacterias and fungus and of course NO MORE JUNK FOOD! my two cents ...

I got out of the VA hospital a day before Thanksgiving. I could swallow baby food and I had a hard time swallowing water. They had me on Prilosec for a couple of years due to acid reflux. A number of factors (stress and aspirin) wrong diet, put me over the edge. In the hospital I spoke to several gastro-intestinal doctors and mentioned my burning tongue. None of them had ever heard of such a thing.They all kept refering to a possible metalic taste in my mouth. They scoped my stomach took a biopsy and told me that I had a lot of Peptic ulcers in my stomach and a condition called "Eosinophilic Esophagitis" in my esophagas. They wanted me to continue to take the Prilosec and a Corto-steroid throat inhaler. It has been 4 weeks since I left the hospital. I have not taken these drugs, and I have resorted to natural cures (Kefer, aloe vera juice, leafy green soups, baked squash, yogurt, none of which has seemed to cure the burning tongue that occurs minutes after I eat something. I have started on your ACV and baking soda. I can already tell it's working. I also have itching all over my body that flares up from time to time, usually after I eat something. The itching is very intense. I have been taking "Doxapin" for it for about 7 years. Now I am not taking any alopathic medicine. For years my sister had a very painful red and cracked tongue and a sore mouth. She was prescribed various medications but none of them helped. Then she had her amalgam fillings replaced with porcelain, but still no relief.

One day someone suggested it might be caused by food additives namely sulphites. She eliminated all foods with E numbers (E220-E228) and since then she's had no more sore tongue or mouth.

Very occasionally she'll have a bit of a sore tongue but she can usually trace it back to something she ate in a restaurant.

I have suffered with a white-coated, fissured tongue. It started in 2002 when I was under a great deal of stress. I found relief in 2013 when I started going to a functional medicine doctor. He put me on several medications. They included fish oil, B vitamins like B12, folate, and B6, digestive enzymes and anti-fungal herbal drops for candida.

He tested me for MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). I had never heard of it, and was most surprised to discover that I have two genes for it. One of the problems with this is that you don't process B vitamins properly.

I am so much better, but I have relapses like when I overdo and get very tired, or stressed. Another thing, I have one mercury filling that he has told me to get removed.

I hope this helps anyone out there who is suffering like I have. Best wishes to you all.

I have had a white tongue for about 6 years now. It happened after I had my youngest son who was born at 28 weeks by emergency c-section. The doctors had me on an I. V. Antibiotic every 4 hours for 4 days. It was to the point where they had me on so much I couldn't even eat anything. Anyways, since then I have tried countless ways of clearing it up with no success. I mean every way on this page did pretty much nothing except for the glycerine! I am AMAZED at how fast and how pink my tongue is again! While I have only been using it 24 hours, the whiteness is almost gone. It still has a small whiteish tint but like I said, it has only been 24 hours. I hope with continued use, and drinking more water my tongue will be back to itself again in no time!! I ordered a 16oz bottle on amazon for $8 (huge I know since I only use a couple drops on my tongue scraper). The stores in my area wanted $7 for half that size so I went with the better deal. You can also use vegetable glycerine for hair and skin as well. Haven't tried that yet, but youtube users seemed to be pleased with the outcome for that use as well. I also read that glycerine has over 1500 uses so there is always something to do with it! For anyone with this problem, start with the glycerine first and don't waste time and money like I did :)

I've been a big fan of Earth Clinic for many years and had much success with many of the posted remedies for different ailments (I have type 2 diabetes and HBP).

After a recent round of antibiotics for a upper respiratory infection left a nasty white coating on my tongue, I drank the following: 8 oz cup hot tea (I used decaf Earl Gray), 1 tbs of ACV with honey to taste along with 1 drop of Lugol's with my breakfast. By the end of first evening, most of the white coating was gone, by the end of my second day, my tongue was back to normal, no more white stuff! I am so amazed that something so simple cleared up my nasty tongue so quickly!

I can't say enough good things about Earth Clinic! I love this site, thank to all for your contributions and advice!

Mandy, you are over reacting about the danger of taking too many capsules at one time. In fact, the more, the better since it will allow much better absorption of key nutrients such as Calcium and Iron that your body constantly needs. The trick to avoiding any stomach burns is simply to do what I do and that is take YOGURT afterwards. I once ingested 10 capsules at one time with plenty of yogurt afterwards and believe me I felt a pleasant warm sensation in my stomach as a result of balancing the PH level in my stomach.

The results were immediate afterwards since I got rid of the feeling that food seemed to be stuck in my stomach. Furthermore, after about 15 minutes or so I felt so light as if my stomach was empty but without the feeling of being hungry. You need to understand that stomach acid actually stimulates all your digestive organs to functioning at an optimum level so important for maintaining a good healthy digestive system.

I don't regard taking HCL Betaine as a cure but rather as a supplement because I realize that the aging process will, over time naturally reduce my stomach acid. That in the long run would only compromise my health and thus reduce my life expectancy.

There are two ways in which a lack of stomach acid can literary destroy your health (1) promote harmful bacterial growth (2) reduce your ability to absorb vital nutrients.

Concerning the post nerve issue after wisdom tooth removed...

An alternative explanation rather than "bruised" nerves is that an infection is present. I just had a similar situation with the "skin" in my mouth close on top of an old site which had a wisdom tooth extraction. The spot was very sore... for days. Finally, I got out my colloidal silver and let a tablespoon amount soak the sore spot. I did this for about a week and after that time the soreness was gone. Was the soreness caused by an infection? I don't know but l am of the opinion that it was and the CS knocked it out. By the way the soreness left gradually AFTER I began using the CS application.

Hi Mark,

I had/have the same problem as you as far as my memory goes back. I'm now 23 and have a memory of me asking my mom, ''why is my tongue so white?! '' and her answer was ''o, it's nothing, it will go away on its own honey don't worry''. Of course it never did. Since the age 12 I became very aware of my condition and was very ashamed of it. This condition took my confidence and influenced my life in a bad way for the next 11 years. I also had/have very bad breath that smells like rotten eggs or even worse a human flatus (fart).

I also have post nasal drip, which I sometimes can get under control. I rinse my nose every morning with 500ml water a teaspoon of salt and 8 drops of GSE for nutribiotics regular strength. When I do that, 8 out of 10 days I don't have post nasal drip, but when I have it it smells really bad.

Since one week I'm using digestive ''plant enzymes'' from NOW foods and ''super enzymes'' from NOW foods. Since I've been using these my tongue coating which was white and sometimes yellow and looked hairy, is slowly disappearing and I seem to have way more saliva now and it's only been 7 days.

My doctor prescribed me proton pump inhibitors for my complaint of acid reflux and that made my reflux worse. Only since 4 days I know that the symptoms of to much stomach acid and too little stomach acid are exactly the same! So I definitely am going to try taking betaine HCL with my meals to see if my symptoms will disappear even faster. NOTE: my ''super enzymes'' from now foods contain already 200mg of betaine HCL.

I think it's great that you took the time twice to write down your problem and your solution. You're a good person Mike. Hope you read this.

Hi Mike,

I know this is an old post but I found it looking for tongue/oral issues. I have had constant white patches on my tongue and inside my cheeks. Looking back, I've had stomach issues my whole life, starting at age 9 being diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. I have no idea what pharmaceuticals were used but I was prescribed a bland diet and 2 tablespoons of Mylanta every 3 hours around that clock for about 3 months. It was the 70's. Even after I was deemed healed, my stomach burned. I just learned to live with it and believed that I was going to feel that way pretty much forever. My stomach probably still burns now but I don't even notice it because it always has and I'm 57 now.

Fast forward, for the last 3 years or so, I have noticed the white patches that the dentist call leukoplakia but doesn't treat nor tell me how or why it develops as he claims they, "don't know." I am so very tired of it, a sore tongue, heat sensitive mouth, and the white stuff that just doesn't belong! Of course, I have had bloating, weight gain and some of a general feeling of not well sometimes. I have had a stomach scope and discovered some stomach polyps which no one knows what causes those. I think a total lack of good gut bacteria has hurt all of me so we have started making our own kimchee and kefir. I am encouraged about the Betaine and will give that a try to see if I can garner some control over my health once again.

I am thankful for this site as medical doctors are not learned on the natural ways of our body. They are great at medicating. Don't get me wrong, meds are great when you are critical, but treating your body in the way of healing, not so much. I look forward to reporting back!

Hello there.... I enjoy cooking immensely and use various if not all the spices I can get my hands on.... Because I love the robust flavor! There is nothing more irritating than eating Bourbon Glazed Salmon and having it taste like nothing... UGH UGH... Knowing that my spices have many uses, I began to dig around for what would fix the all time annoying "white tongue".... Hence I couldnt taste any of my robust flavors....

So, I came across the salt fix. Needless to say, after about 10 minutes and looking like a St. Bernard (the drooling )which I thought was quite funny by the way.... Here is what I did.... I salted my tongue with the sea salt, brushed my tongue with the sea salt, gargled with the sea salt... And lo and behold... Ten minutes later.. I found my pink tongue!!!!!!

You might say that after 1 year of having to endure a white tongue I have developed a real obsession in trying to find a cure for it. I have tried just about every method described on this website but without success and not even temporary success. Now I can sit back and celebrate BECAUSE I HAVE FOUND A CURE FOR THIS MYSTERIOUS AND FRUSTRATING DISEASE!!!! There are many reasons for a white tongue but the one that affected me for so long was really the result of ACID REFLUX not Candida as I originally thought from the beginning. It was only after I finished my last packet of treelac considered as probably one of the most promising cure against Candida that I realized that it may all along have been simply acid reflux. White tongue for me proved to be the greatest health challenge of my life as this was the result of 2 major heartburn, a fever, and a little jaundice. Absolutely. Have you ever considered the following in relation to stomach acid and Candida:

If only people can start taking this matter more seriously about the importance of maintaining minimum stomach acid levels in their body then they would not experience half the symptons they are now currently struggling with. With sufficient HCL did you known that Calcium, iron, zinc and potassium can be absorbed more efficiently into the body. A safer and equally effective solution is to use apple cider vinegar with your meals. Lemon juice from a freshly squeezed lemon is also equally good to help digestion. 1 tblspn of either or in a small amount of water or pomegranate juice is perfect. Other juices are not really as good as pomegrante juice as pomegranate juice is so high in antioxidants that it is in itself a mineral supplement, and other juices are not as safe in that they have high fructose corn syrup etc in them. This recommendation is very effective in elminating digestion problems. It truly works, give it a try. Good luck, Ellen

To answer your first question is that ACV is only alkaline at the tail end of the digestive process. The same applies to lemon juice as well. Initially when ACV is ingested it is at this point extremely acidic in the stomach and becomes quite capable of reducing and even preventing heartburn. But that is really a band aid solution because ACV does not have the same vital chemical features HCL is capable of. As mentioned earlier ACV works just because it reduces the PH value of the stomach being the main trigger mechanism for keeping the valve shut against escaping acid into the esophagus. That is why it is so effective in preventing heartburn. You could have just as well used another type of vinegar with the same results as long as it has an extremely low PH value. The pylori bacteria can survive only because it is capable of hiding inside the stomach lining away from stomach acid. HCL will serve to only make it very difficult for the pylori bacteria to move around in the stomach and thus render it almost completely inactive.

On the other hand, very low stomach acid will allow this bacteria to navigate very freely and that is how the bacteria can do most harm to the body! There are of course specific treatment programs just for the Pylori bacteria that does not involve HCL and should be followed to eradicate it at once if its existence is confirmed inside the stomach. Sufficient stomach acid only serves to decrease its mobility inside the stomach. I hope this has answered all of your questions.

Re-aligning a dropped little tongue. At the onset of a bout of sore throat or flu, the small tongue seems to drop back into the throat, affecting the ability to swollow. and is also very uncomfortable, almost worse than the flu its self. Take a small amount of pepper, preferbly white pepper, on the very tip of a round tipped knife and carefully dab onto the tip of the little tongue. This will pull the tongue back into position.

Burning tongue-Mouth issues: When you have burning tongue or canker sores on tongue or in mouth. Do not drink any orange juice, ketchup, sauce etc. The best cure I have found is to rinse your mouth will Karo syrup. It seems to neutralize the acid. Also 2% hydrogen peroxide.

Hi, I dont know if this is of help but some years ago my Polish half brother complained of a black tongue and at the time I couldnt advise him. He was at the time a chronic alcoholic, now I have never had a black tongue, neither have I had a white tongue except years ago when I had thrush which is a white tongue? However, I did read somewhere, that if you get a black tongue, eat PINEAPPLE, either fresh or from a tin, and it should cure the black tongue? I've never tried it, as I said I havent ever had a black tongue. But I do have a very sore tongue that burns a little, hence my visiting Earth clinic. The only way you will know is giving the pineapple a try. I am not sure if it said rub a slice on your tongue or simply eat it, but it was definitely pineapple. Wont hurt to give it a try. Rosina x

HI U GINGER,,,,,,,,, alum is aluminum sulfate and not good for your brain. In your situation, it probably not a deal.

Like your grandmother, we always used alum to make pickles crisp. I finally learned that you can use pickle crisp (calcium chloride) to make your pickles crisp without using alum. The pickle folks kept that a secret for many years.

Calcium chloride is a desiccant in that it removes water from the air. It is the product that folks use in their clothes closet to keep the moisture down so their garments do not mildew.

I think you are safe in your use of alum.
