My daughter has been in treatment for thyroid issues. She started Lugol's protocol. Now she tells me the treatment caused her thyroid to noticeably enlarge. I'm very skeptical of this. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

When taking iodine, such as Lugols make sure enough selenium is taken with it. Too much iodine can cause nodules.

Hi all,
I would like to know if there are any known issues with the following remedies. More specifically, if they would interact/hinder each other.
Borax, sodium thiosulfate, turpentine, methylene blue, lugol's iodine, trisodium phosphate. I guess I should add in my thyroid medication Armor.
My current regiment is to take Borax M-Th as told by Ted 1/8 tsp. First thing in the morning I'll take 1 drop of 2.3% MB - that gets put into a cup and mixed with 1000mg of ascorbic acid. Fr-Sun I'll take 12-30mg of Lugol's. No MB on those days, or if I do, I put 12 hours between them.
TSP I'll take after work, 1 oz of a solution (1/2 tsp in liter water).
I plan on taking STS and turpentine on different days since they are so powerful. Perhaps Saturday and Wednesday nights before bed.
Anyone see any issues with this? I also take sodium bicarb after lunch and dinner.

I know that biotin is one of the B vitamins and it has been emphasized in a nutrition almanac that you should take all of the B vitamins together because if you take one you can cause a deficiency in the others. For starters, you could try a TBSP of Blackstrap Molasses in a cup (8oz. ) of warm water or milk.

Hi, You can try MSM, Iodine or Kelp. I had hair loss also and it returned with these products. My hair loss was stress-related check that out also... There are a lot of things you can do about it, expensive and inexpensive if you search. I found a website of Dr. Berg you can see little video's about different types of people, and the things they should do to loose weight. I am an Adrenal type, he also refers to 'Thyroid type', 'Liver Type' and 'Ovary type'. I ordered his book and his description was very accurate! He recommends different diets and products to address all sorts of hormonal imbalances... Success!

Kelli, my daughter lives in NC & she had her thyroid removed and was taking synthroid for three nightmarish years. It made her life absolutely miserable. But her doc paid her symptoms no mind when she complained about how she felt. So finally she found a more suitable natural med that she orders from Canada & life is good again. Thank GOD for alternative meds! So don't give up seeking for better help through safer meds.
Fluoride And The Thyroid
Posted by Leah (Philadelphia, Pa) on 04/30/2013
Hello all, I have just rediscovered why low thyroid is becoming a major problem. It's the fluoride in tap water, juice, tea, wine, tooth paste etc that supresses thyroid and can cause a long list of chronic illnesses. It was actually originally used to lower thyroid in people who produced too much, therefore if you have too little, you need iodine and to avoid fluoride. Please see the Fluoride Action Network for facts and studies and in the mean time only drink and eat non-fluoridated water and foods!
Http://www.fluoridealert.org/Carbon filters cannot remove fluoride. You need ideally acess to a spring or to install a reverse osmosis water filter in your home if you live in a fluoridated community. I highly recomend you try to get fluoride out of your water at the local level.

When I was a teen my thyroid was so low that I had the highest TSH score my doctor had ever seen. He said my thyroid was most likely dead. I believed him for twenty years. After a lot of research, I was lead to try alternative methods and found a good "muscle tester". She said my body did NOT like my Rx, (Levothyroxin, but I had used Synthroid in the past with similar results being that I was still very symptomatic) and replaced it with a whole foods supplement. I was VERY wary about stopping my meds. I expected to see the exhaustion and mental fog I feel the next day when I accidently skip a dose, but I was shocked to see an INCREASE in energy and in my ability to focus mentally. I was able to sort clutter all day for four days straight in preperation for an upcoming move. This would have been a nightmare for me before. I have been off my medication and taking the supplements for over a month now and I feel so much better! The supplement I use for thyroid is called Thytrophin PMG and is made by Standard Process (
www.standardprocess.com). It is very reasonably priced and it's all natural. It is supporting my body to make its own hormone which I never dreamed would be possible.
It is ESSENTIAL that you have muscle testing done to determine the needed dose. You can also learn to self test. It's actually pretty simple. The good news? My tester said it's pretty common that people can eventually stop taking the supplements once their bodies recieve the necessary nutritional support. I figure I will probably always have to check up on my thyroid and use this natural support on and off, but that's a far cry from a "dead" thyroid with lifelong Rx requiring blood work, etc.
I feel so good I can't even explain what this has done for me! PLEASE look into this. It's really true that you can get off your meds. Chiropractors are licensed to carry this, so they would be a good place to start.

Thanks Laura for this wonderful post. I heard a lot of Standard Process supplements but was always wary of using them because most of them contain animal products. I am especially scared of the ones that are made with beef. Do you know if this is an ingredient in the one you are using? I have been using meds for low thyroid for 2 years now and am dying to get off them. Also, how long were you on thyroid meds? Thank you so much once again for this wonderful post. It's people like you that make EC the place to be.

Your comment suggests that hypo/low thyroid is equivalent to Hashimoto's ... but ... it is not. Also, while it is an autoimmune disorder that can *cause* hypothyroidism, it is *not* the only cause. (For example, I have hypothyroidism that was caused by medication that is known to cause it.)

Is it Safe to use Lugol's for HYPERthroidism? if so what is the dosage and how is it administered?
My mother has it and currently takes the following supliments:
Co Q-10
Selenium
L-Lysine
Also her face is a Lil puffy and her hands. I read somewhere on here where someone said that was also a condition. I've read so many post about hyperthyroidism I'm getting confused. Some say it works but only temporarily and should not be used unless it for Pre-Op surgery to remove the thyroid. Then there is the post under Thyroid remedies quoted here: "04/18/2008: Jan from Buffalo, NY writes: "Lugol's cure for Hyperthyroidism. 2 years ago I went to the doctor for fast pulse rate. Resting it was 105 to 110 bpm. He sent me to an endocrinologist who recommended the radioactive pill approach to killing the thyroid. I asked him about Iodine. He was very specific about how dangerous it would be to treat it with Iodine. I went home and ordered a bottle of Lugol's from the internet and three days later having taken doses for 3 days, my pulse rate was below 75 and the swollen throat had subsided. "
I Googled Lugol's cure for hyperthyroidism and only got links to that post. Nothing showing what the Lugol's cure is dosage wise and how to administer it. There is one post about using POTASSIUM IODIDE and they are asking what I'm asking. Any help would be appreciated and THANKS in advance from the thousands of HYPERthyroidsim sufferers who search this site in need of help.
Wilson's Syndrome

Some supplements that help Wilson disease that I have found are Molybdenum and Zinc, I use a multivitamin with the molybdenum in it and 75 mg of zinc for a while each day then off until I taste copper (pennies) in my mouth again and start taking it again. staying off copper foods and drinks helps to decrease the problems caused by copper. Also, getting one's thyroid in good shape helps and eating a good nutritional diet. I'm still working on the good nutritional diet. I have always been a junk food junkie. Hope this helps.

I need help fast, I only have until the end of this month, I came off the medication I am talking for hyperthyroid and I'm sure the DR will be able to tell I did that, if I can't find something fast to help this problem, I just don't want to have my thyroid removed, I feel sure there is help for me naturally. Can anyone help thank you
Iodine

Shiloh from Escondido,
First, the medication your husband is prescribed is actually very safe and there are no side effects. He should ask his doctor for antibody testing and separate T3/T4 tests also, not just TSH, which may offer more insight into what is causing his disorder. Also, he may want to have thyroid function (tests for iodine uptake) or a scan of the thyroid. There are a number of good books about thyroid issues--check your library--many of them address alternative therapies. I am much smaller than your husband and I was on 100 mcg per day until I was able to discontinue (about 2 years). Now, for the iodine. First, you need "Lugol's" or Iodoral tablets (I got mine on Amazon). The tablets are 12. 5 mg each. I started with 50 mg (divided between am and pm) and now I take 25 mg (one tablet am and pm). Second, eliminate soy--read labels because it is in everything! Soybean oil, soy protein, etc. Third, avoid broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage--for now. He will be able to work these back into his diet later. Finally, fluoride detox! This is most important. The protocol is discussed more thoroughly in other posts on this site but basically, 1/4 tsp of borax (20 Mule Team from the laundry section of the store) in 1 liter of non-fluoridated water. Drink and cook with only non-fluoridated water. Avoid chlorine as much as possible also--this includes swimming pools and hot tubs. There are shower filters available if your water is highly fluoridated. My TSH was borderline high (2. 5) but I had antibodies. The Rx eliminated the antibodies and got my TSH to 1. 0 and I have maintained that number using the above remedy. I went off the medication with the approval and supervision of my doctor and have continued to monitor my thyroid levels to make sure everything is still working properly. Good luck to you!

Cat, For the eczema, you can try soaking in the bath a couple of times per week for 15 min. or more with a mixture of Tea Tree oil and Lavender. This will help with the eczema :) You can also try controlling your blood pressure with another natural supplement. Use this site to your advantage. I know I am. I love this site. It has really been a savior to me. Don't give up on the coconut oil.... Until you try the tea tree and lavender.
Avoid Non-Stick Pans

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
Non-Stick Pans & Thyroid disease
Perfluorooctanoic acid, used in non-stick pans and water-resistant fabrics may cause/contribute to thyroid disease. British researchers identified a link between the chemical (PFOA) & higher rates of thyroid disease.
Adults with the highest level of the chemical in the study were more than twice as likely to report thyroid disease... The study was published online in the Jan. 20, 2010 issue of Environmental Health Perspectives. It is not conclusive whether the chemical causes the thyroid problem or the thyroid malfunction results in the higher rate of chemical in the blood stream..My take...why take chances...get it out of the kitchen.

Hello Y'all, Wow Tom, you are an "intellectual quarterback" in this field, and I'm in the audience thinking, Wow man... Cool. Thank You. My case may be one example of these topics you have posted. For instance, my TSH was never higher than 4. 5, but would dip to. 3 with no medication. My free T3 would remain low or subnormal. I had to persuade the Internist and Endocrinologist to test the T3. It was determined along with other tests, ( ACTH, cortisol, DHEA, etc. ), that I had low functioning pituitary and adrenals. Hormones are similar to electrolytes in that they shift and change quickly, and are difficult to measure. Testing sensitivity needs improvement. More attention is needed for discussion of symptoms. I am going to bring up another instance that applies to this need. I am the middle child of three. Tragically, my elder brother, (age 13), and my younger sister, (age 41), experienced sudden death. Autopsy report: no known etiology (cause), ventricular fibrillation in both cases. We all had similar but varying degrees of symptoms, my brother's being the most aggressive, mine second, my sister's, the mildest. Before my brother's death, (1968), he had many episodes of fainting, whereby he had to be resuscitated by EMTs for survival. V. Fib. Was detected in blood tests. I would faint, wake up, walk away. My sister did not faint. We all had anxiety and palpitations, among other shared symptoms. I don't at all blame the medical community for not determining our conditions, difficult to test, difficult to analyze symptoms. But, I do see a strong need for improvement in the aforementioned, and, respect for the patient. My case was "written off" by some doctors and practitioners; and it was strongly implied that my survival was a case of random chance. That may be, but, I will not rely on random chance to save me. The only difference I can determine in my case of survival here, is that I have practiced good nutrition as best I could, from a very young age. That's the bright news of this. Thank You, Connie

Yes, of course. I had been cured of Grave's Disease by using a combination of: Co Q-10, Selenium, and L-Lysine. Since, I'm very happy and back to my normal athletic self I did some research on Selenium and found that one atom of Selenium combines with one atom of mercury to neutralize the affects of a lifetime of vaccine/shots. Mercury causes a myriad of problems including hypo/hyper-thyroid problems: Protein inhibition, Disruption of mitochondria function, Direct affect on ion exchange in a neuron, Disruption of neurotransmitters, Destruction of the structural framework of neurons. L-Lysine regulates hormones in the body. Hypo/Hyper, to me it is one-and-the-same: too little or too many hormones, the three vitamins listed can bring your system back to productive functioning. Of course, the way you eat and what you drink (good water) will aid in your recovery. I don't drink tap water because I think it is poisonous. Mercury also causes gray hair and makes a person sterile. Ted, I love you very much. The link you provided to Dr. Denham Harman's reasearch on Free Radicals provided the clue into my finding my very own personal cure. I began taking Co Q-10, L-Lysine and Selenium on June 7th, noticed a change within one week and it is now August; a total transformation during that time. The good news is: I won't need the Nuclear Medicine treatment of burning out my thyroid or an operation to remove my thyroid. I can keep it (my thyroid) in place, where it belongs!!!

Someone asked about how much was taken of each vitamin to cure my hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease): one of each per day.
1. L-Lysine: 1 pill (500mg)
2. Selenium: 1 pill (200mcg)
3. Co Q-10: 1 pill (100mg)
The Selenium detoxified my system so that the Co Q-10 could do its' job of helping my mitochondria along. L-Lysine regulated my hormones. I should really stock up on those pills as there is mention of something called the CODEX: that will ban supplements as early as December 2009.

Hyperthyroid: My Story
August 14, 2007: Hyperthyroidism begins. This condition came out of the blue (nowhere) and hit me hard.
January 1, 2008 thru June 7, 2009: Condition worsens. Can't stand for more than a few seconds without shaking, can't hold a pen/pencil without my hands shaking all over the place. No sleep for more than 1-hour. Eyes and neck bulging. High blood pressure, 130-beats per minute is my resting heart rate, hair thinning and falling out, and small bumps begin appearing all over my body.
At the beginning of June 2009, I read Ted's post that linked to Dr. Denham Harman and researched any article on Dr. Harman; especially the interviews. He mentions Co Q-10 and Selenium. This website (earthclinic) mentions L-Lysine to regulate hormones.
June 7, 2009, I begin taking the three vitamins: Co Q-10 (100mg), Selenium (200mcg), and L-Lysine (500mg). One pill of each is taken everyday. I began noticing a change; 3-days after beginning my personal vitamin regimen. From December 2007 thru June 2009, I visited my doctor and the nuclear medicine specialist. They suggested radiation treatment to burn out my thyroid.
Between June 7, 2009 and October 7, 2009; drastic improvements have taken place. In October, I've switched my toothpaste to non-fluoride and drink only non-fluoridated water. At this point, I'm thoroughly cured. My doctor tells me to quit taking vitamins and to come in for my thyroid destruction. I tell him to get lost and continue with the vitamins.
December 5, 2009: No more symptoms. Hair is looking good, skin is nice and smooth with no problems, sleeping nicely, heart rate is normal, eyes back to normal, and my neck has shrunk back to normal. I haven't changed my soda pop drinking habits and it's one vice I'd like to keep.
The drastic changes occurred with the three vitamins, and eliminating all fluoride intake. The biggest plus working for me is that I was always in shape before the hyperthyroidism hit so my heart could take the rapid pace; until the health reinforcements could be found. Anyway, Ted saved my life and this earthclinic website. I do owe them a gigantic debt. One more thing, I mix one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass with bottled water; to drink every so often.

Oh my goodness, I can't even begin to tell you how much better I'm feeling!!! I've been on the suppliments now for exactly 8 weeks and it has made all the difference in my world.
I did double my dosage - same amounts, but one dose in the morning and one at night and I've been off my medication for 7 of the 8 weeks. The first thing I noticed was NO MORE heart palpitations or sweats. My thyroid shrunk almost immediately - I'd say within 24 to 48 hours, my breating and heartrate also slowed. My overall dispositioned improved considerably. I'm soooooooooo much happier these days and other "stuff" has started working better too ; )
I'll be going to the doctor to get my levels checked really soon, but I'm pretty sure that these suppliments are working 100 times better than my medication ever did. Even if I have to take this for the rest of my life, I'd rather take something natural than something perscribed.
And last but not least, all 3 suppliments combined cost around $20 for what ends up being a 2 month supply. Folks, you can't beat that with stick. . .
If you have HYPER thyroidism [Graves Disease], please don't hesitate to try this, you'll really be glad you did.

I got same thing when drinking coconut oil, it was in wishbone area in chest, turned out to be gall bladder spasms. I got this after taking growth hormone injections and 600 calorie a day diet with no fat for 3 sessions X 6 weeks each. Needless to say, gall bladder went into spasms off / on for 2 more months and the test they did at hospital showed gallbladder not functioning properly. The spasms were so painful, I agreed to have it taken out. I so wish I knew how bad that is on / for your body!! The problem it is not the coconut oil, you need to treat your low functioning gallbladder first so stop the coconut oil until you do this, a low functioning gallbladder is a precursor of hypothyroidism. Eat beets.. search for gallbladder attacks there's a diet and also products that you can use to dislodging gallbladder stones also melt them as well other approaches for making your gv healthy thus your thyroid will be well specially it is hypothyroidism

Thanks to this site I have been able to contol the symtoms of an inactive thyroid. I take 2 tablesspoons of EVCO in small glass of orange juice morning and night . This has given me energy, I am now able to exercise 4 times a week, stopped the constipation.Improved my moods and increased my general wellbeing. It did not decrease my weight so i have started counting the calories. I used to be able to feel my thyriod constricting, now that has gone, so I know that the EVCO is having a direct effect on my thyroid. I have not decreased my medicine -1 thyroxine per day and my scan shows no change to the thyroid surface, but the EVCO has given me my motivation back.

90% of hypothyroidism is caused by hashimoto's... It's the #1 cause of hypothyroidism in the USA. Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease so it's absolutely necessary to address what's causing autoimmune responses. Some possibilities include dysbiosis, dysglycemia, food sensitivities etc. Check out the hashimoto's groups on facebook and you'll get alot of info on this.

Since then, I have made a major change in my diet even though I had eaten very well before without white flours, sugars and the other problem foods for many years. Now I am eating raw vegan foods and have not only finally dropped almot 40 pounds but my blood sugar levels are down to the mid-90s. I credit eating a raw food lifestyle with all this! My thyroid numbers are also in the more normal range! Lots of good changes that I believe eating a raw food lifestyle made happen.

Ha, I just read this while looking for low thyroid suggestions. I said I would update and apparently forgot for several years...probably my low thyroid. :-) Well, what I'm doing now is Armour thyroid which seems to have no side effects. Yay! But, my doctor started me on only 15 mgs, she's cautious, and is gradually increasing the amount. I'm up to 45 and still have to keep the kitchen at 75 degrees, and often have cold hands. However, I read online in more than one place that we can take Armour under the tongue so it bypasses the stomach. I've been doing it that way, and we'll see. I tried calling the Armour company about doing their thyroid sublingually, but they didn't know. The lady said I'd have to ask my doctor...who's really a nurse practitioner which I have come to prefer. One more thing, I now have pancreatic insufficiency which can be caused by low thyroid! So, I'm getting serious about taking my thyroid supplements, bladderwrack, guggul, tyrosine, etc.

I have been having problems with being so tired the past month or two. I knew it was a low thyroid problem. I ordered some organic iodine from a seller on ebay and within hours have felt a lot better, I'm on my 3rd day and my fatigue is still a lot better.

You must be right. For 1 yr., my mom (in her mid 80's) and I totally abstained from commercial iodized salt and only used a high quality, unprocessed (no iodine) sea salt with 80+ minerals stated on the package.
Towards the end of that year, (a couple of mths ago) her thyroid grew very large. Mine did not grow much, but we both ended up with hyperthyroidism and on meds. We both have separate doctors. Both doctors could not figure out what caused this condition and neither did we. We only supplemented with iodine drops or kelp now and then. I guess it was not enough to keep the thyroids in balance. I was suspicious that it might be the lack of iodine in the salt. Perhaps iodine should be in the salt after all. We are now sparingly using the sea salt w/o iodine and focusing on sea salt with iodine even though, it is processed.
Great point about ACV leeching out iodine. Pls. note that excessive consumption of raw cabbage (coleslaw) also does the same. That is why it is safer to eat less raw cabbage and more cooked, as cooking the cabbage neutralizes most of the leeching of iodine component. Even though raw cabbage is great for getting rid of fat in the abdomen area, don't over do it. That warning is found on the net, but you do have to search for it.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention, as I too have search and searched and did not find the info you posted. It sheds a lot of light on our situation. Thank You and God Bless.

THANK YOU
A million years ago I read ACV depletes iodine, it's 2011, and can't find that straight up as an information footnote in general ACV praises. Stumbled across this, and I SAID I KNEW IT, I'M NOT CRAZY!!! Someone below stated they removed iodine from their diet, as did I, LOADED UP on cruciferous vegetables, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Broccoli; so Double Whammy! My weakened system, weakened thyroid allowed YEAST CANDIDA ALBICAN over growth. What a vicious cycle, in between 106 beats a minute, No MEDICAL INSURANCE...... I can barely live.

You can just apply iodine (about a square inch patch) to an area of the body where the skin is thin and your body will absorb what it needs. Check every 6 hours or so to see if the iodine has been absorbed and apply more if so.
Regarding cruciferous vegies - you always need to heat them up before you eat them if you have any type of thyroid issues to deactivate the engoiterins in them. You can let the cabbage cool off before useing it in a slaw - it's still yummy that way.
Some people's thyroids respond well to maca root, but your body must be free from any type of hormone supplements like natural progesterone for a couple of weeks before starting it. Do a lot of research about it before deciding to try it.
