Well it's a weird story because I think Iodine helped me and then didn't do so much good. I had a pain like "something stuck in my throat" and the acupuncturist thought it was my thyroid so she gave me potassium iodine drops to drink (20 or 40 a day - remember it is not regular iodine); and these were great to alleviate the pain and gave me the strength I needed to move, because I was in a point of suffering all the symptoms of a thyroiditis or a thyroxicosis; but then I took Ibuprofen and when the swelling of my thyroid was coming down, the iodine felt terrible so I stopped taking it! I really never knew which was the perfect dosage for the potassium iodine drops! I also took kelp, around 20 pills divided in 4 or 5 times in a day and they helped me a lot, but I was never sure if this is what I needed. I end up going to a specialist who immediately asked me to leave the iodine because he thought the help was just psychological, and charged me 250 dollars for saying this! I hope the traditional doctors learn about the iodine to properly help their patients. And I also hope that people who is suffering the hyperthyroid symptoms and hypothyroid too, should consider having some iodine to help ease the pain and problems. What I recommend very urgently is to have a blood test taken meassuring your thyroid levels (TSH and T4 and T3) way before taking the iodine or Kelp, because it can change those results and affect your helath or, worst, doctors might end up giving you the wrong medication - (as it happened to me and thank God they couldn't harm my thyroid too much!). Hope you all get well! Think that you will!

I have read a lot of the comments about the VCO and its problems. i have been taking VCO & ACV (Read my testimonial) for over 10 years. In addition to both of these natural cures I also take 1/2 lemon & 1 tbsp. of Sea Salt each day with 8 oz. of warm water. This lemon/sea salt drink is a natural cleanser for your liver & digestive tract. If anyone is scared of the VCO causing liver problems then this might benefit them. The VCO does give you a oily discharge and gas but the benefits far outweigh the negative. I have taken several body cleanses and the natural, cheap and easiest way to do a body cleanse is to take the VCO twice daily (I mix mine with vanilla yogurt) and you will dispel the parasites that cause illnesses and clean your intestinal tract that when old food is not dispelled causes diseases. I do the lemon drink first thing then my VCO with yogurt and then my ACV & water and I am ready with so much energy to start my day. I have my thyroid and weight under control due to this regimen.

I also use VCO instead of body lotion or hair conditioner. I had very dry hair, skin and cuticles due to a thyroid problem but once I started the VCO it went away. I also make a VCO & Sea Salt scrub that does double duty because it opens your pores of the skin to dispel toxins and softens your skin. I am a 48 year old red head grandmother that looks in her 30's because of this great oil. I have 3 incurable diseases that I take no medication for except for my thyroid medication and my dosage keeps getting smaller & smaller each time my blood work is done.

I have found many cures for illnesses that are natural and have not been to a doctor in 4 years except for my yearly Lupus physical.

I had a low functioning thyroid, very dry hair and skin. Since taking the Virgin Coconut Oil I no longer need my thyroid meds. My hair is soft and silky and my skin has dramatically improved. I cook with it and I also put it on my face 2x per day. What a miracle, I have also noticed an increase in energy. Other cure I found for it was diaper rash. My baby had a really bad rash while teething, her bottom would bleed and none of the creams at the store seemed to do anything at all, so I tried the coconut oil and with one application her bottom cleared up dramatically and the next day it was completely gone!

I have a tendency towards hyperthyroid (I'm not on any meds) but EVCO made my heart race and my hyperthyroid and insomnia symptoms a million times worse. I took tons of Magnesuim chloride and glycinate and exercised and my symptoms went away. The only other supplement that made me suddenly go into a hyperthyroid state like that was Iodine.

Thyroid Gland Removal Remedies
Posted by Kelli (Va) on 06/04/2013

I am 40 yr old female. I had my thyroid removed about 5 yr ago. It was by far the biggest mistake I have ever made. But relying on my Dr. recommendations I had it removed as it was getting larger. I have felt like a completely different person since then. I forget, can't focus, stay cold, headaches, very tired all of the time, can't sleep, leg cramps, serious hair loss, just don't care really. I feel as though I am becoming dumb over time. I take 175 mg of synthroid, weight 135lb, Dr. exclaimed that was high for someone my size? weigh is not and has never been an issue for me. I believe Synthrroid is causing some of these problems. I want to stop taking it, however I can't find a Dr. That seems to know what is going on. They just keep upping the synthroid??? Looking for a natural substitute to help me get back to the old me. I dont even take cild medicine. I don't know what my levels are anymore just got tired if going to the Dr and nothing being done.

Cholesterol

Hi Lawrence,

I'm not sure that all algae will offer those two benefits of lowering high cholesterol and improving thyroid function, but some of the darker algae such as blue green algae can. Spirulina would be considered a form of blue green algae. Brown algae, such as kelp may offer similar benefits.

Blue green algae can lower cholesterol as discussed in this meta analysis here :

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1756464624004638

Here are some relevant quotes from the meta analysis of multiple studies :

' This systematic review and meta-analysis included 77 RCTs with 3686 participants.

  • Algae supplementation significantly reduced TG, TC, and LDL levels in adults.
  • Diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased with algae supplementation.
  • These findings suggest that algae supplementation can improve cardiovascular health markers. '

Further, blue green algae can also improve thyroid function do to its iodine content as well as the amino acid tyrosine, other beneficial nutrients and it has the potential to offer benefits toward thyroid function as discussed here :

    https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-drug/def/spirulina-based-dietary-supplement

Here is a relevant quote from the link :

' A nutritional supplement composed of the blue-green microalgae spirulina. Spirulina is high in protein and contains significant amounts of calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, iodine, iron, beta-carotene, phycocyanin and chlorophyll. The spirulina dietary supplement may affect the cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems and may improve diabetes and high cholesterol. In addition, spirulina contains antioxidants and may protect against cellular DNA damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). As spirulina has a high concentration of iodine and contains the amino acid tyrosine, it may improve thyroid function, and ameliorate the size of benign thyroid nodules. '

Well, here it is a long time since you posted this. I hope you will check back to find this answer to your eczema if you still have it. Eczema is caused by roundworms. No cream or change of diet is ever going to work. Nothing had worked for me until I found this book. Dr. Hulda Reghr Clark explains in her book, The Cure For All Cancers, the exact methods for getting rid of parasites (most people have them). She explains how roundworm even causes schizophrena and how parasites can cause many illnesses. I got rid of my eczema by following her protocol. It took 2 weeks. I took her full strength herbal formula for 2 Saturdays and did the zapper treatments every day for 2 weeks beginning the first Saturday that I started taking the herbal formula. She explains how to begin taking the herbs gradually if you have cancer and are sick to your stomach, which I wasn't, so I began the formula full strength, that is, taking all the pills all at once with a little bread on an empty stomach. At the time the black walnut hull tincture was in liquid form, but now it is available in pills. At the end of 2 weeks my whole body became inflamed with eczema, but the next day it was all gone. People think there is no cure for eczema, but this is the cure. Roundworms are huge. Not only did my body expel parts of huge worms, but clumps of new babies as big as my fist. The roundworms are about 20 inches long and as big around as your thumb. They multiply by the millions. Imagine what destruction they can do when they invade your whole body! You have to keep your body clean because everybody has parasites! The wonderful and brilliant Dr. Clark died a few years ago, but you can buy her products from Self Health Resource Center in Chula Vista, CA, www.DrClarkStore.com. Her books have been printed in several languages and have been sold throughout the world.

SamLaunch's post is about HYPERthyroidism (such as Grave's Disease), not HYPOthyroidism. This is a very important distinction! One is overactive, the other underactive. People with HYPER-t should not necessarily be taking the same measures as those with HYPO-t or vice versa. Please be careful to make these distinctions both when posting and when reading the posts of others or doing research.

EC: Very true, thanks for pointing that out. Posts moved to correct section.

Please fix your gut. I have had Hashimotos for 20 years and only recently discovered Garden of Life HSO Probioics in supplement form to repair my guy. I also QUIT sugar, dairy and gluten just to give my gut a break. I can tell you after 2 months the difference is absolutely amazing. I could sit here and type paragraph after paragraph of ailments I have had and improvements that I now have from changing what I have and adding that probiotic. I am also taking Garden of Life RAW one a day vitamin, 15K Vitamin D3 per day, ZINC, Iodine, selenium, 30 mg of Melatonin per night before bed, I take a few others but I 100 percent believe these have made me feel more alive. I have my follow up next month to test my thyroid and antibodies.

Iodine

I am hoping you will start a new supplements section on iodine. Also another section on maybe causes of ailments, like fluoride and the problems it causes. Here is my story about fluoride, iodine, and thyroid....

I first noticed my husbands goiter close to 6 months ago, at that time it had become quite noticeable and was indeed very large. Obviously concerned for his health he went to see his doctor, who referred him to an endocrinologist, who then referred him to a surgeon. Strangely enough they told him his blood levels were normal and he didn't have a thyroid condition.... interesting since he has this giant goiter on his neck. lol

At the time there was so little that I knew about thyroid disease and I didn't have much interest in it, I was concerned for my husband but thought that surgery was the only option. Then my husband began to have panic attacks after my daughter was born, and at home no less (I now understand it to also cause and fluctuation of the thyroid hormone)! I honestly thought it was a mind over matter and went searching online to prove that he just needed to stop scaring himself. Instead what I found was that his panic attacks were actually caused by the goiter. Because I had my daughter at home without a midwife, just me him and my mother (planned it that way ; ) I had already learned a few natural remedies, while looking up honey and the wonderful benefits of it I also learned of coconut oil, though I only learned about it being good for pimples. I was interested in purchasing some coconut oil online and that's when I found some of the most amazing information. The site selling it said it helped with thyroid conditions, I wasn't going to believe them, after all they were selling it they would say anything to sell their product right? So I looked up thyroid forums and testimonies regarding the use of coconut oil and sure enough I found out that it was indeed beneficial to his thyroid. Well I ran out to the store and bought some the next day, in the car my husband was exhausted and began to have a panic attack and I told him to take some coconut oil, he only had a 1/4 of a teaspoon and ten minutes later his attack had subsided and he felt energized! After this experiment, we continued treatment and slowly worked up to 3tblspns a day where he's at now. After that revelation and since we had his attacks under control (and in fact after taking it for a week he no longer even experienced an attack) I went back online to find out what we needed to do to shrink his goiter. That's when I learned about iodine and how important it is and how many people are deficient and thus many are hypothyroid and even still many are undiagnosed with hypothyroidism. I also learned about what counteracts iodine, like soy which is a big one since it is in just about all prepackaged foods. When I found out how important iodine was for the thyroid and how the thyroid makes hormones for your whole body I became interested in what else iodine deficiency was responsible for, And do you know what I found? Lots! Here is a sight that lists all the symptoms of iodine deficiency...

But first, after realizing that my husbands thyroid was caused by a change in his diet, I began racking my brain thinking of what on earth has changed over the past year. I've been trying to figure it out for the past couple months and today I found it.

During our big change to all, well almost all, things healthy, I remembered reading about people using toothpaste that doesn't have fluoride in it.. I looked online for the reason why and WOW, what I found is shocking! Fluoride also counteracts iodine, it inhibits the uptake of iodine to your thyroid and we both know (at least by now) how important adequate amounts of iodine are to your thyroid. So I told my sister about it and she said that she didn't think we had fluoridated water, so I searched for the cities that had it in OC and that's when I came across this article ( http://www.ocregister.com/article/water-fluoride-county-1924513-muir-doctors ). I told my sister what I'd found out and how the time they added fluoride pretty much coincided with the onset of my husbands goiter and the worsening of his thyroid (I believe he has been hypothyroid for a long time as have I and my mother based on the symptoms) and my sister said that she has experienced a worsening of her asthma over the past year!

I am interested in asking friends of mine who have symptoms of iodine deficiency whether they experienced and increase or decrease in their symptoms over the last year (without divulging anything till they have answered so that my findings are not biased) I will report back later with some of my findings, but I am interested if anyone else has experienced similar problems after their area had been fluoridated.

I stopped taking my synthyroid and started supplementing with iodine. It took me a month and a half to build up to the 12.5mg. My body temperature increased by 2 degrees - from 96.3 to 98.3. My skin and hair have dramatically improved and I can sleep through the night.

EC: Synthroid is taken for hypothyroidism.

Coconut Oil for Hypothyroid patients: I heard that virgin coconut oil was a good supplement for people suffering with hypothyroidism. I went to a natural food market and bought a jar of it. That was 2 months ago and I have gone back to buy more several times. I am taking 3 tablespoons in the morning. It has not helped with my weight although I know a few people who used it and lost weight immediately. It has stopped my hair loss (it use to fall out by the handful) and in fact not only is my hair thicker but my eyebrows are growing back. I no longer have cold hands and feet either. It doesn't cure thyroid problems but it certainly is a great supplement to help with the effects of the disease.

[WITH SIDE EFFECT] I began using VCO on doctor's orders to help combat hypothyroid. My skin, hair, energy levels were all positive results. I also used VCO as a deodorant. However, after a few days I began gaining weight, got dizzy spells and some diarrhea. My blood pressure soared! After continued trials for a couple of weeks, my doctor advised me to stop using it. This was disappointment as I got good results in other areas; however, every attempt made to try it again caused my BP to go higher. I do full body cleanses once or twice a year. Possibly it might help if I did just liver cleanse? I'm 60 years old, exercise daily, eat healthy foods, do drink 1.5 cups coffee in morning and am Blood Type A. Disappointed as not being able to use coconut oil due to HBP. Would appreciate any comments on my HBP problem to be answered on this site. Any insight would be beneficial. Thanks, a CA gal

I tell all my sisters, every female: STOP INGESTING SOY!... and its many products. Do your research and study what soy does to your thyroid. Then, check your grocery labels intensely because soy is in just about all packaged food labeled as vegetable protein, gluten...etc; in names disguised to fool the American public. So, do watch what you buy. It is used exclusively in most restaurants so try to cook at home as much as possible or eat simply of meat, fruit, salad with your own dressing (store bought salad dressing is loaded with SOY OIL). For me, first getting rid of soy, switching to red palm and coconut oil, stopped my extreme thyroid problems. Now I am slowly losing the weight that I could not lose no matter how much I exercised or ate well.. Applied Coconut oil with a drop of iodine soothes my aching neck. So ladies, if you find that you eat right, exercise and still cannot lose excess weight, you need to get rid of soy in all its forms. THIS KNOWLEDGE IS FINALLY CATCHING ON. Believe me, where the female goes, the nation follows. EXCESSIVE BLEEDING AND OVARY SWELLING, losing eyebrows, head and body hair, sore turkey neck, itchy skin, weight gain and a host of other SOY problems is the legacy of soy that catches up to you even if you are a tiny person. Without soy in my diet, I no longer suffer from extreme daily bleeding. And, my eyebrows are growing back and my hair has stopped falling out with my hairline slowly growing back in. BEWARE! IT IS THE SOY SISTERS.

WARNING!

Ingesting ACV has long been used for medical treatment and is sometimes very effective.. HOWEVER, one should also take an iodine supplement, such as kelp tablets or kelp extracts while using this therapy. Extended ACV consumption can remove iodine from the body, and can result in thyroid problems. (Salt also causes the same problems which is why commercial salt has added iodine.) I learned all this back in the early 1970's, and have not found this important information on iodine/ACV interaction in any articles or books recently. However I have not covered your entire site. So in case no one has mentioned this yet, it really needs to be addressed.

I took one tablet of Iodoral (iodine supplement) a day for a year, my blood calcium and alkaline phosphatase levels rose to above normal. A year later my blood test results were even higher, so the doctor gave me a PTH (parathyroid--which sits right next to the thyroid) blood test, and it was very high. As the only thing that I had changed in my life was taking Iodoral, I quit taking it, and 3 months later all my tests were back to normal. The parathyroid's job is to take calcium out of your bones and give it to the brain, but too much in your blood can mean heart attacks, strokes, and osteoporosis. There really aren't any symptoms of an over active parathyroid until it's very bad...feeling cold all the time, brain fog, are two. If you've been supplementing with Iodoral or iodine I suggest you get your blood calcium level tested, then alkaline phosphatase, then PTH (which is expensive, so save that for last).

I second Cynthia from Jacksonville, I am severely hypothyroid and growth hormone deficient and if I eat just a handful of almonds I have an aching, swollen thyroid for the next few days and feel terrible, like I have stopped taking my meds (even though I haven't). The same feeling of a swollen very sore thyroid happened to me recently after eating a whole pomelo (giant grapefruit like fruit). It cleared up by itself after a few days, but I am now assuming there are some powerful anti thyroid compounds in pomelos. I stopped eating grapefruits in large amounts a few years ago for the same reason. I am also very sensitive to cabbage, broccoli etc.... Hope this helps someone.

For a really insightful viewpoint on iodine, check out this lecture by Dr. David Brownstein (http://www.internetwks.com/clips/bsBCancer.rm) about iodine and its deficiency relationship to Breast Cancer. Note he also suspects an unproven relationship between an iodine deficiency and Prostate Cancer.

He mentions that the Japanese diet includes 14mg per day of iodine on the average (coastal Japanese ingest even more.) The US RDA is 150 ugs (micro grams) per day -- about 100 times less than the Japanese eat -- and the recommended upper level for iodine is no more than 1.1 mg/day, and they estimate the average requirement to be 95 micrograms per day or about 150 times less than the Japanese consume.

The 125mg Kelp tablets that I have from Vitamin Shoppe, have 225 ugs of iodine in them. Thus, to get to the Japanese level of Iodine (14 mg/day), I would have to take 62 of these tablets a day! Dr. Brownstein also states that iodine is stored in the thyroid which requires 6 mg/day and is also stored in a women's breasts and required for proper breast development. The breasts require 5 mg/day for a 110 lb woman.

And catch this... Breast cancer researchers have to starve test animals of iodine in order to be able to induce breast cancer in any significant number of them. Hmmm...

Another 2 mg/day of iodine is required by the adrenals, hypothalamus, pituitary, and other organs. Therefore, the total required iodine for a woman is 5 6 2 = 13 mg/day. The RDA is 150 ugs per day, so a woman would have to take 86 times as much as this to achieve the 13 mg/day needed by her body, and even more if she had a larger body or bigger breasts. A man has smaller breasts and his prostate requires somewhat less iodine than a woman's breasts. However, a man's body is generally larger than 110 lbs, so this would have to be factored into the total requirements for a man.

Dr. Brownstein states, "Over the last 30 years, iodine levels have fallen over 50% in the United States. Breast cancer rates have risen dramatically. Thyroid illness from hypothyroidism, autoimmune including Grave's and Hashimoto's, as well as thyroid cancer has risen dramatically."

Since the Japanese have so much iodine in their bodies (they're ingesting 100X our 150 ug RDA of iodine), and iodine is essential for dealing with radiation exposure, it makes me wonder what might happen happen if there were a mishap involving massive radiation exposure in a country such as ours where the iodine level is so pathetically low.

And this may well be an important consideration, as cancer rates have been shown to rise after radiation has been released into the atmosphere, which apparently happened quite a bit with the use of depleted uranium (DU) weapons in Iraq in 2003. Background radiation levels were measured at many times normal in England (click this link - http://www.llrc.org/aldermastrept.pdf - and check the graphs) just a few days after the fighting started in Iraq. Cancer rates in Iraq in 2001 were about 10X what they were before Desert Storm where much less DU was used than in 2003. The big problem is that the effects are global (see: http://www.mindfully.org/Nucs/2006/DU-Europe-Moret26feb06.htm). So, the problem for us is that the DU rounds burn up or pulverize and tend to stay in the atmosphere, allowing the "aerosol of sub micron" size to enter the slip-stream and come back to America to bite us all.

Therefore, we all need to be aware of any nutritional and purification techniques which will handle radiation.

I've just upped my iodine intake to 1.35 mg/day (6 kelp tablets of 225 ug each) and I feel warmer already (maybe this will help me burn off my excess fat even faster.)

Thyroid Disease and Virus Connection
Posted by Zander (Anytown, USA) on 09/18/2024

Just wanted to add that stress if often cited as a factor which preceded the development of autoimmune thyroid disease. Well, what do we know stress does to the immune system? It weakens it, right? That's the opportune time for a latent, hidden virus to remerge.

It's been said that a person with sufficient levels of vitamin D cannot develop an "autoimmune" disease. That's worth keeping in mind, although if the virus model of thyroid disease is correct, the vitamin D is keeping the immune system strong so that a virus is not able to remerge and proliferate.

Avoid Raw Spinach
Posted by John (Hi) on 06/27/2020 6 posts

I chose to eat raw spinach as my leafy green and did so daily to the tune of 1 pound a week over a year. I had been warned about effects of oxalic acid causing stones but I didn't think I was overeating it. Over time I became less focused, irritable and finally fatigued, a feeling I had never experienced!

I tested for my thyroid markers and and they were through the roof! I immediately stopped the spinach and gradually normalized! Anecdotally, when I ate katuk, I experienced insomnia! Then, raw parsely and cilantro caused my skin to itch! Back to romaine lettuce for me. (Sauropus androgynus, also known as katuk, star gooseberry, or sweet leaf, is a shrub grown in some tropical regions as a leaf vegetable.)

Am 57 and thyroid was removed when 17 and it has been a long journey from there to here, and I am glad for how I chose to respond to the situation -- to become my own doctor. Thanks to the internet, my learning machine, and listening to my body signals.

Currently take Symplex F and T-100. I can identify with all of the issues and experiences of the posters.

I spend less money on supplements now. I juice all of my dark leafy greens and sprouts, very little to no fruits or fruit smoothies. Green apples and local strawberries okay. Started the apple cider vinegar and baking soda regimen. Take a "Long Fast" twice yearly. Predominant oil is coconut and occasionally stone-crushed (Bariani) olive oil.

Actually spend same and most likely less on groceries than in my meat eating days. Although the Klamath Lake Blue Green algae is a bit of an initial investment, but it has a shelf life of 3 years. 2.5 teaspoons most days and a sun-brewed algae tea.

No regular consumption of various caffeinated products, nor cruciferous vegetables.

Periodically track myself by taking a.m. temperature.

Took up meditation a few years ago and that is helping me get out of the mental ruts that reinforced the feelings of tiredness and brain fog for decades. Body-mind-me. Dropped the hectic material-based middle class must-have lifestyle and have not looked back.

Dr. Robert Cassar's Food Pyramid, and Markus Rothkranz's verve and vitality and e-books motivate me in my raw foods transition.

I love this website, written by real people for real people who simply want to share and to help and to enhance and to be enhanced. Thank you everyone.
