Many patients report that they've had some kind of infectious episode immediately before the onset of GCA. There are several reports that Epstein Barr or Herpes can be a co-factor in Temporal Arteritis (Giant Cell Arteritis). On another site, one poster mentions a "2013 case study indicating a possible linkage between GCA/PMR and Epstein Barr virus."

Therefore, the poster suggests that it is possible that taking nutrients such as Quercetin, Bromelain, Wild Oregano, Olive Leaf Extract, Lysine, and/or Vitamin C, etc. - might useful in stemming inflammation as they are anti-inflammatory, immune modulators. The poster stated that s/he takes takes "up to six caps of Bromelain or Quercetin day for cardio-vascular health and allergies. Search PubMed for Quercetin and be amazed at everything they're studying it for."

However, if temporal headaches seem severe, continuous, or involve any eye sight disturbances including blurring, one should immediately check with one's doctor.

Hi Hollyhock,

In Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and the resulting Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) elevated IL-6 (inflammatory cytokines), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) inflammatory levels are a definite issue so looking for supplements that lower IL-6, ESR and CRP is important.

Although melatonin is an IL-6 and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) inhibitor, it may not be a good choice for these two health issues when combined with the standard corticosteroid therapy. Several known IL-6, ESR and CRP inhibitors are :

1. NAC @ 1200 mg/day total in two divided doses of 600 mg at breakfast and 600 mg at dinner

2. Curcumin @ at least 1000 mg/day

3. Omega 3s such as Fish Oil at 3 grams total per day

4. Astaxanthin @ 24 mg/day with a meal

5. Vitamin D to get well into the reference range for 25 OH d level of 30 ~ 100 ng/ml

The above mentioned dosing is based on studies for other health issues in humans than the two that are named.

Due to different methods of action among this group, there is also potential for synergy, which could be useful.

Due to the serious nature of the two named health issues, you will need to get your doctors approval and supervision in order to use the mentioned supplements.

My husband, is 73, has polymyalgia rhumatica and his rheumatologist warned us about giant cell arteritis, which is directly related to pmr. I had hoped to find information on Earth Clinic but couldn't. It is a very dangerous condition, can cause blindness and can enlarge the aorta as well. Maybe someone who has dealt with the condition can chime in? Thanks so much!
