More than 10 years ago, I was experiencing severe menstrual cramps and had a fibroid the size of a five-month pregnancy. I also discovered that I was anemic, with a hemoglobin level of 6.2, and very close to needing a blood transfusion.
My OB-GYN prescribed iron pills, but they made my stomach hurt and caused significant constipation. At the time, I was also working with our son's DAN doctor. At the end of one of our conference calls, I asked what he would recommend for anemia and a hemoglobin level of 6.2. He immediately recommended sesame seed oil pills and included some with my son's next supplement order.
I began taking the sesame seed oil pills according to the dosage on the bottle and stopped taking the iron pills. Within a week, I was feeling significantly better. I was sleeping better, and my fatigue had nearly disappeared.
Then my next cycle began. I experienced severe clotting and hemorrhaging, and my doctor told me to have bloodwork done immediately. She was concerned that I might need a transfusion, based on how low my hemoglobin had been. Despite losing a tremendous amount of blood and nearly passing out, my hemoglobin had risen to 11.
My doctor couldn't believe it. She told me she now had another tool in her toolbox for patients with a health profile similar to mine. Since then, whenever a friend has shared they have low hemoglobin and are struggling with anemia, I've told them about my personal experience.
I later scheduled a partial hysterectomy, and since that surgery, both my iron and hemoglobin levels have remained within normal limits.
