When my mom was in her late 80's, she began having trouble balancing the checkbook as she'd done for years. Her memory continued to decline and we feared she would suffer the same fate as her sister who died from Alzheimer's. When she was close to 90, I read Dr. Mary Newport's book and started giving her a tablespoon of unrefined coconut oil in her morning oatmeal. We also mixed the coconut oil and MCT oil in a 3 parts/4 parts ratio to keep it liquid at room temperature. We added this mixture to a clean former shampoo bottle with a pop up top so we could pour it over her lunch and dinner food. She became more relaxed and like her usual self. Later at about 93 she had to go to a nursing home due to a fall/break, but my dad continued to visit and pour the CO/MCT daily. Two months before my mom passed, she wheeled herself to the nurses station and asked them to call me because she remembered my birthday. She was almost 95 and still knew all family members. Coconut oil (refined so neutral taste and smell) was such a blessing.
However, the oil has made no difference to my husband with Alzheimer's.
