i have been miserable for 2 days, can't swallow and my lymph nodes are swollen in my neck. I checked this forum and went and got some organic coconut oil. I melted a teaspoonful in a cup of hot tea and I felt IMMEDIATE relief. Thank you all so much! I will make sure and take the 4 teaspoons a day recommended :-)

23july2011 -

i really hope the coconut oil works. I purchased a jar today. it's crazy expensive.

I've been sick for five weeks (i had strep first), then tested positive for mono. It's insane how sick you get with this stupid virus.

my recipe is two teaspoons of coconut oil. One teaspoon of honey. Three ounces blue gatorade. mix the honey and coconut oil together. Melt for about 15/20 seconds. Mix in the gatorade. Drink immediately. (tastes like a margarita).

the coconut oil will soldify quickly, so drink fast if you using a cold beverage.

I'll repost if it does work and I'll repost if it doesn't work.

Almost three weeks ago my daughter started to not feel very well. Headaches, sore throat, congestion, body aches, fatigue, etc. We went to the doctors, and the diagnosis was a sinus infection. Augmenten was prescribed. Ten days went by and several trips back to the doctors and no relief for my daughter. Finally the doctor ordered a blood test, and it came back positive for mono. They said there was nothing we can give her for mono it just has to run its course, and it could be 4 to 6 weeks or more before she feels ok.

She has taken virgin coconut oil for approx. 4 days. Twice daily along with some vitamin c. Her turn around is nothing short of remarkable. We've read and heard horror stories associated with mono. Months and months of lingering sickness. Thanks to this site and VCO, my daughter will be back to school next week. We are believers. I am sure results vary for each individual but, definitely worth a try.

Thank you so much for the Coconut Oil drink mix! My daughter is 16 and has been fighting a virus for over a month. They tested her for Strep and Mono, both came up negative in July. Last week Mono came back positive. The steroids were not working after 3 days, I took her back in and they gave her 2 shots of steroids and advised to continue Motrin every 6 hours. The next day I found this drink mix and gave it to her last night. She woke up feeling the best in a while, more energy, her throat wasn't hurting as much. She still has 1 more day of steroids. At first she didn't want to drink it, then changed her mind. She even makes this drink herself! We know this isn't an overnight cure, but if it cuts the healing time in 1/2; I'm happy about that! I plan on giving her this for a few weeks until she is fully recovered. Thank you so much! I can't believe all the many uses for coconut oil :0)

I have had Mono for about two months. The doctor told me 10 days ago, that I was on the Tail End of the illness and that it should end within 2 weeks. So basically he says I have 4 days left. IDK how the hell he would know how long I have, but I got Coconut Oil yesterday took 4 in morning, 4 at night, and I feel a little better today, not cured, but a little better, the only thing im battling now is the fatigue, nothing else... Should I trust the coconut oil?

I also enjoy the benefits of coconut oil. I am nearly 64 YO, and I use it for all my cooking, for my body moisturizer, my hand cream, my face cream, I have only been using it about 6 months and my cousin who is about 3 years older than me told me I look 5 years younger, and asked if that is why my hands look so so smooth, and my face is fresh and radiant?? You cannot buy anything on the market better for your total body's skin care than coconut oil. Now I do take minerals and vitamins, but I always have, but I have seen many changes in my skin and weight loss with VCO. Merryanne in FL

My daughter became sick and diagnosed with mono, after being told that fluids, rest and crossing your fingers that she may feel normal in three months, I did some research on line and started reading about coconut oil! After three days of taking it she was like new. No more high fevers, swollen eyelids, swollen glands in her throat, no more excessive sleepiness. She went back to school, only missed five days total, and back to work also! She has never had a relapse even after being done taking the tablets for a month, has been healthy ever since!! Coconut oil is a miracle as far as I'm concerned! I will use it for other illnesses also. Thank you for all the great information!!

Hello, I was diagnosed with Mono about a little over 4 weeks ago now, and was given nothing to help with it. I was told to get sleep and drink lots of water, I am still suffering being tired, all the time and the very large tonsils, and that kills me especially when I am trying to sleep, I feel like they are caving in, and can't breath. But really they are not, (I'm just thinking about it way too much) but I want to get rid of that! I never get sick , so this is horrible for me. Where do I purchase this coconut oil? and how much do I take?!

Have you tried the coconut oil? I am willing to give it a try on my adolescent daughter who is on her second case of mono.... In 15 months. Three years ago, another daughter of mine was the first to get mono while she was in the 2nd grade. Her case was milder than my teenage daughter who has had a very rough recovery since being diagnosed the first time in Jan 2010. I am trying to boost her immune system. I wish an easy recovery for you and your family as it impacts the entire family.

Hi, I'm 19 and have glandular fever, as I havn't been able to do much else I have spent a lot of time researching. Please do not worry about your younger children as from what I have read in various places it generally only affects teenagers and young adults severly, for young children and elderly it generally just presents as flu like symptoms and is usually gone in 1-2 weeks. Interestingly many state the reason for the rising rate of teenagers and young adults contracting this illness in its debilitating form is due to rising health standards and protection of young children which means people are not catching the illness as small children when it would only have mild effects. So it appears that it is a good thing for younger children to catch it as this then gives them some imunity from it when they are older. I myself am in the 3rd week of my illness and after being very very ill for 1 week in hospital, I have now made a rapid recovery through using Apple Cider Vinegar, vitamin C, homeopathic remedies and a herbal mixture that includes herbs such as echinacea and olive leaf extract, once I have finished this course of immune boosting remedies I intend to move on to remedies focussing on energy and liver support (as mine was severly affected and I became jaudiced for 3 days).

Our 19 year old daughter was diagnosed with mono through blood testing on Monday. At this point, she had all the classic symptoms along with severe swollen tonsils and glands and a sinus infection, which the doctor was wanting to utilize an antibiotic to treat.

After much research and reading testimonies of those who have used coconut oil successfully for treatment, we decided to try this option and postpone the use of the antibiotic. Coconut oil pills were not available at our local health store so we purchased organic virgin coconut oil (VCO), unrefined. Beginning on Tuesday, we mixed 1 1/2 TBSP of the VCO each morning and each evening in a smoothie or with some applesauce for her consumption. The sinus infection began to loosen and drain after the first consumption of the VCO and the throat pain from the swollen glands and tonsils began to decrease significantly. After two days, this morning, Thursday, she awoke and actually came to me with a huge smile and lots of hugs of appreciation for finding this solution to her ailment. She no longer has any throat pain, her sinus symptoms are gone along with all other symptoms and she is feeling and looking well. While she was sleeping I had researched a little further and found that you can mix the VCO with honey and cinnamon and spread it on toast for another option of consuming. We both tried this option this morning and it is tasty. A great way to serve it to younger children.

I have now continued the research on all the health benefits of VCO and will be utilizing it regularly for cooking, treatment of various ailments, and as a face moisturizer. Thanks so much to all who posted on this site, it was truly a blessing to our family.

My husband was diagnosed on 9/23 with mono with a positive blood test. We started vigin cocnut oil that day 2 tablespoons every day and with in 5 days he was completely symptom free. His doctor had filed disability paperwork because he was going to be out at least one to two months she thought, but he was relaesed for work this past week and is TOTALLY symtom free!!!! She was shocked because she had never had any patients recover that quickly, she ensured us that she would encourage others with mono to give it a try.

So I began to look for mono cures since currently I have Mono, I came upon here and I read about the coconut oil. Im already trying that, its my second day, I had Apple sauce, Coconut oil, and a lil honey for flavor. My Throat is just as imflamed as your Daughters and I am 17. Couple of questions though, when she took it was it hard for her to swallow? Because when I take mine I have to choke it down and it hurts very very much. Plus I keep spitting up mucus so it feels like it wont stay down, any suggestions? I'm in dying need of Help. Im in my 2nd week of Mono.

Hello,
We are just home from the ER and my husband is asleep in bed with mono. He is in a lot of pain and so very fatigued. The doctor said that he can expect to be out for 4-6 weeks. He was do discouraged and frustrated when hearing this. I feel awful for him! I just started researching as soon as we got home and found this site. Very thankful! We are healthy people and always use natural cures when feeling a little under the weather. He has a very sensitive system, so tylenol, ibuprofen etc. are not preferred. I have a lot of these remedies at home already, but am curious how much someone with mono should be taking? What would be a good daily regimen for my husband? Also, with the coconut oil we have expeller pressed organic coconut oil that we use for cooking. Is it okay to just have him take this or does it have to be virgin?

Thanks so much for any tips or advice that you all are able to offer! With gratitude,
Megan

My son was diagnosed with Mono about two weeks ago. I read the recommendations about using Coconut oil as a therapy. I am beyond the word IMPRESSED! He had pustules on his tonsils and his lymph glands were very swollen. After four days of taking the 4 coconut oil pills morning and night the swollen glands are very reduced the pustules are gone. He had a slight cough and that disappeared as well. Thank you for posts regarding coconut oil. Debbie, Bohemia, NY

Coconut Oil cured my son of mono in four days. My son was sick for about a week, when we finally we to the doctor he tested positive for mono. The doctor just said " he could be sick for weeks or longer, good luck " and that was about it. I found this site and read all the yea for coconut oil. I had some organic 0il that I used for popcorn and he started taking that. Two table spoons in the morning and two at night, he didn't like the taste much so I went and got the capsules and he took four in the morning and four at night. Within three days he was feeling better, out of bed and his appetite was back. Keep him home for two more days then back to school. My son is sixteen and doesn't want to do any I say will help him but he was really sick. What a blessing this information is thank you everyone for your postings.

I was diagnosed with Mono along with my husband 4 months ago. we are both in our mid-fifties and have become very very ill. I read this website and decided to try extra virgin coconut oil, 4 tablespoons daily, Monolaurin 4 capsules in the a.m and 4 in the p.m., along with elderberry extract 350 mg in am and 350 mg in pm ( in lozenge form). We have been doing this daily for only 5 days. For the first time in four months my husband and I feel like we will survive the Mono. We had extreme body aches (mostly gone now) extreme fatique ( we can actually get dressed now and go to the store), Nausea, (gone now),day and night sweats (this has decreased for me and stopped for my husband). We are taking both the coconut oil and the capsules because we are desperate and it seems to be working. My husband is going to the health food store now to by some organic apple cider vinegar to help with the night sweats.

Hope this helps anyone who is dealing with Mono-it's not only for the young!!

Thanks for sharing your story. I am curious how you are now doing. Are you healed 100%? Also where did you buy the Monolaurin? I was diagnosed on May 5th and I am in my mid 30's. I have done everything, vitamins, accupuncture, massage, Veltrex and rest. I just went back to Dr. for more blood work and I had the same EBV results (>8). I have most of the symptoms you mentioned but also stomach pains and digestion. This is such a nasty virus that has alot of effects but I am paranoid about every ache and pain and am frustrated it is taking so long to heal. Would love to hear how you and your husband are progressing. Dan

My 12 year old daughter was just diagnosed with mono. She had 4 episodes similar to strep throat with very high fever, aches, and chills. It would return every 2 weeks like clockwork. It wasn't until the 4th time that we got the mono diagnosis. We've been doing lots of vitamin C, probiotic, acai, and an immune system builder blend from the chiropractor. She feels fine right now, but I'm concerned that it will return. What can I do to help her stay well? Will the coconut oil, ACV, or other methods mentioned here help her build her resistance? We were told "get plenty of rest and fluids...she will always have it" by the doctor. Aaargh! Thanks for any suggestions. Please feel free to email me personally with any info you have.

Hi Cocoadoce...VCO contains Lauric acid, which is easily converted by the body to monolaurin when ingested or when it is used topically. But that isn't the only good chemical component that VCO contains -- it also has caproic acid, caprylic acid and myristic acid -- which are all anti-microbials and protective to the body.

VCO consists of 40%-50% Lauric acid, a saturated medium-chain fatty acid.

VCO is very protective and safe for the body, which is why it has been used in babyfood since the 1960s. It is also used in food given to hospital patients with intestinal trauma or after an intestinal operation.

Therefore, VCO is the best form to take. VCO also helped me to get rid of my own candida problem. I cook with VCO, don't use vegetable oils at all now.

After doing some research online, I am 100% sure I had Mono this weekend. Wow! This was the most painful thing I have ever experienced and wish I never get it again! I did not visit the Dr. because I try to deal with medical things naturally. I tried many, many things to relieve my sore throat but the one thing that seemed to help the most was advil. I do know about coconut oil. I started taking it last night but haven't seen an improvement in the sore throat. I will make sure to keep using it though. One drink that worked well for me was honey with lemon water. I only had one lemon so I ended up using the mango/peach homemade vitamin water I had in my frig. I heated that up for about 40mins in the microwave and added honey to it. That worked just as well. I also ended up getting a throat spray from the health food store. Echinacea and Goldenseal Propolis. This seemed to help a little bit. But be warned if you get this... It tastes awful!! Lol It tastes worse than Nyquil and I always thought that stuff was NASTY!! Lol I would use the spray as a last resort. The other things I had been trying were... Salt water rinse, Immune Balance Sinus (nose was a little stuffy-producing post nasal drip), Roxalia for sore throat and hoarseness, sinus relief tincture, nasal wash, peroxide in the ears, Zand's zinc lozengers in orange and elderberry. Also drank throat coat tea with chamomile and elderberry/echinachea tea with honey. Now I am drinking my coconut water to replenish my electrolytes. And I will definitely be taking more of the coconut oil.

For the people who aren't quite sure about the coconut oil- coconut oil is very beneficial. I found an e-book on amazon about the many benefits of coconut oil. I personally use coconut oil to grease my cooking pans. Especially, when I make eggs. You can't even taste it when your food is done. You can brush your teeth with it. You can also rinse your mouth with it after brushing. I read that helps to whiten your teeth. I saw a recipe online to make your own deoderant using coconut oil. I've also been told many times to eat it when I am sick. So it is a very beneficial item! :)

Lastly, I pray that every one of you who has been touched with Mono gets better quickly!! This is one illness that is extremely painful and not fun to have!! Be well all!! :)

MY SON IS A FRESHMAN IN COLLEGE WHO WAS RECRUITED AS A QB FOR FOOTBALL. HE WAS DIANOSED WITH MONO A WK. BEFORE HEADING FOR PRE-SEASON TRAINING. HIS DR. SAID THAT THE ONSET OF THE MONO WAS PROBABLY ABOUT 3 WKS BEFORE SINCE HE HAD EXPERIENCED THE MAJORITY OF SYMPTOMS AT THAT TIME. WHEN HE WAS DIAGNOSED HE WAS SEVERELY FATIGUED. HE DID GO TO SCHOOL HOWEVER, SPLEEN WAS ENLARGED AND WAS ONLY ALLOWED TO ATTEND TEAM MEETINGS BUT COULD NOT PRACTICE OR HAVE ANY PHYSICAL CONTACT. I WAS DESPARATE TO HELP HIM SO WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY NATURAL REMEDIES THAT WE MIGHT TRY. WHEN I READ POSITIVE FEEDBACK ON THE COCONUT OIL. HE STARTED ON CAPSULES THEM IMMEDIATELY (4 IN THE MORNING AND 4 IN THE EVENING) AND WHEN HE WENT FOR SECOND ULTRASOUND OF SPLEEN 2 WKS LATER, THE SIZE OF SPLEEN WAS COMPLETELY BACK TO NORMAL, HE RESUMED PRACTICE AND IS NOW FEELING GREAT! I TOO DO NOT KNOW IF IT WAS A COINCIDENCE OR NOT BUT VERY HAPPY WE TRIED IT! THANK YOU!

I have been taking coconut oil for five or six years now. About five years ago, my daughter, who was in college at the time, came down with mononucleosis. I overnighted her a bottle of monolaurin, the main ingredient of lauric acid, which is only found in any quantity in coconut oil and human milk. My daughter was diagnosed on a Tuesday, she got the monolaurin on Wednesday and on Friday, nine days later she had no symptoms and quit taking it. The following Monday (that's 13 days post diagnosis) she had lab work done and was completely normal. Other dorm-mates of hers had mono for months. Coconut oil, lauric acid and monolaurin supposedly lise the lipid envelopes of lipid viruses and bacteria.

Most colds are caused by lipid enveloped viruses as are a number of major viral infections.

Just last Saturday, a friend of mine called to tell me he had a horrible cold and had made an appointment to see and ENT physician on Monday. I told him to take three tablespoons of coconut oil. When I saw him on Monday, he was obviously fine. He told me he had taken two tablespoons on Saturday and Sunday and was fine on Monday so he cancelled his doctor's appointment.

I take it all the time but every now and then I run out. Usually I will get sick when I do. Then I go get some more. It is particularly effective for sinus infections. I just snort some into my sinus cavities. Most people are amazed when I prescribe it and it works. But I have seen it happen so many times now, I just expect it to work.

Dear David:

Monolaurin (or coconut oil, lauric acid component) is well-known against viruses, which is the main component of coconut oil, however other oils are also well known against bacteria too. A derivative of lauric acid, where they convert this to sodium lauryl sulfate, even in tiny amounts (micromolar concentration) are well-known to kill HIV AIDS, and a great many other viruses with a vengence. Although I don't usually recommend this, but perhaps give you a historical backdrop.

Of course, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) today are not generally use in many products and there is a lot of effort to remove this product out of the market and replace with a safer, albeit less effective virus killer in many shampoo products with sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) which has much less virus killing power then sodium lauryl sulfate.

I remember during the heddy days of San Francisco AIDS viruses outbreak, which occurred almost within months of some kind of free hepatitis vaccination to only sexually active gays, that some were actually cured by taking drops of shampoo at the time were using sodium lauryl sulfate a drop 3 or 4 times a day. There is also a lot of hell fire propaganda in U.S. posted in the internet against the use of SLS also, as well as soybeans (billions of Asians have been consuming soy for centuries and not even fermented at that, where I live, at least), against the use of coconut oil (high cholesterol was actually the hydrogenated form), and a host of other misinformation. It is my guess that some of the idea for AIDS protection and prevention where they use the SLS as both a spermicide and killing of viruses might came from those that were actually cured after taking the SLS internally.

There are other derivatives of coconut oil used by the industry often called tween 20 or tween 80 (polysorbate 20 - monolaurin and polysorbate 80 - monooleate) which is converted to a sulfactant form of laurins used as a preservative. That are also effective too, but the polysorbate 80 is particularly well known against treatment of hair loss due to its antifungal properties that prevent them, or possibly reduce the autoimmuninty on the hair roots thus stopping the hair loss. There are other oils too such as sunflower oil, olive oil that does kill many organisms too, although they are more well known to kill bacteria.

It must be remembered that monolaurin (lauric acid coconut oil), are also helps herpes, genital herpes, virus, ulcers, candida utilis, etc.

In Asia, the coconut oil are such a common delicacy that we give little thought to using as a treatment, but they are also effective against fungus.

While I do believe that coconut oil is helpful in killing off the viruses, i still believe we catch cold because most people have a zinc deficiency and their body's pH are acidic for a wide range of conditions and therefore is the foundation. Zinc alone can kill herpes simplex viruses by 99.9% within hours. If I want a 100% kill, this is easy, just add magnesium chloride, use lavender oil, and tea tree oil. Of course coconut oil works, but for me lavender, tea tree oil, zinc, magnesium works the best in cases of topical application. Of course I usually add a bit of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (below 1%) to it to speed up the killing. If this is done right, and proper portions, my the herpes simplex dies completely within 1 day, with a maximum of 3 days. Last time one of my relative told me it keeps coming back even though the formula (zinc & magnesium only) despite it worked better than the meds medicine they prescribed, I told her if she is in a hurry just apply all of them (tea tree oil, lavender oil, zinc chloride, magnesium magnesium & a touch of SLS) and do that every 1-2 hour for the whole day. The herpes never came back and this has been about a month now. The major weakness of viruses is ALL the medium chain fatty acids, not just lauric acid. This includes caprylic acid, caproic acid found in palm kernel oil too.

The most difficult organism to kill, contrary to what Hollywood is saying (movies like Aeon flux, Ultraviolet, stormbreakers, just for this year 2006) is NOT the viruses. In practice it is actually the fungus and mycoplasma. In the event of nuclear holocaust the two surviving organism are the fungus and cockroaches. Cancer symptomatically are often close to viruses then they do with fungus.

Again the best way to treat the viruses that has the best results for me are pH akalizing and the zinc acetate - to be used as an antibiotic as well as mineral supplement. Coconut is used here as a dietary food source in cooking. Here at my home I used the oil for cooking to be coconut oil, instead of medicine, so it protects while you eat. Oleatic acid also have some protection too, so sometimes I might mixed olive oil to it too. Other oils or spices I used also have antifungal properties include clove, thyme, tea tree, lavender and oregano, just the same. However, pH and mineral (zinc, magnesium, chromium) remains the backbone whenever I get sick the others I just eat them regularly. The last time I got a cold was 3 years ago it last 2-3 days because I got careless with the diet, too much sugar and acidic pH in the urine! Oh yes, and I probably ran out of coconut oil!

5 out of 5 stars

I was diagnosed with mono 3 days ago on a Saturday. I did some research and found this page. Today is Monday and I feel 95% better. No tiredness, no fever, no hot sweats, no head aches and my throat is just about painless. It's still raw due to extremely large tonsils (they were so large that the were squeezing my uvula) but they are shrinking thank goodness!!!! Coconut oil is a MIRACLE. I tell everyone I know about it now. For those of you who are going to try coconut oil, when you get it, it seems like a lard, unless you get capsuls of course. Coconut oil becomes liquid at 77 degrees F. Take 2 tablespoons, put in a small bowl and heat in the microwave for about 30-35 seconds. It will just be melted not hot! And do this after breakfast and after dinner. Trust me you will not be sorry. I wish I knew about this amazing product earlier!!!

I would not melt anything in the microwave. Microwaves kill nutrients in food mostly rendering things "dead". I have thrown away my microwave.

You can just place some coconut oil in a cup and place it in a saucepan with hot water (it can be hot from the tap) and it will melt pretty quick. I usually just place some on a tablespoon and gently place it so it is just touching the water in a cup of hot water. It melts quickly.

Microwaves kill food. Research it.
