[WARNING!] 10/30/2010: Newagewoes from Melborne, Florida writes: "For all the Morgellon sufferers out there, I just found out something important, it turns out that many of our vitamins & supplements ( even good brands ) have Magnesium Stearate in them, I myself have been taking up to 7 different supplements per day with it in them! My doctor who is baffled that I cannot get my immune system built up even though I have been on epicor for two years, suggested that I go home and check the labels on all my OTC pills because Magnesium Stearate blocks immune builders and tears down the immune system, never more than 1 pill a day should be taken with this ingredient in it."
Replies10/31/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "It is awful to hear that even supplements, which one hopes are healthy, come with things which could harm your health! "
10/31/2010: Tina from Princeton, Nj replies: "Hi, newagewoes, after reading about the harmful effects of magnesium stearate ( either via a post by Ted from Bangkok or Bill from Luzon, Phillipines) I have been very diligent about studying labels before buying my supplements. Of late I have been coming across something new on the labels: magnesium stearate from vegetable source. Does any one have more info about this?"
11/01/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "I had never heard of magnesium stearate before I read about it on this site yesterday and therefore went to check my supplements. Only the Quercitin I bought in Britain contained it and then the vegetable kind. No idea if that is the same, better or worse but then I did a Google on the subject and found as many articles defending it as attacking it so I really don't know. Some say you get it from a lot of stuff you eat so the little bit in a pill amounts to nothing, others say that it is bad for your immune system.... Someone said that if you want to make good quality supplements you need to use it.... Well, I am used to being confused about all kinds of subjects connected to my health and now I have still another one! Someone suggested online that this component has been forbidden here in France but somewhere else I read that it has been regulated and couldn't find anything more about it being forbidden."
11/01/2010: Aurora from Mason City, Iowa replies: "Is this the same as stearic acid or magnesium stearate? which are both present in my magnesium citrate capsules. I looked it up on "wiki" and it doesn't sound like a good thing. I would appreciate any more info. Thanks"
11/02/2010: Rob from Manhattan, Ny replies: "Newagewoes, please let us know if as a result of eliminating Magnesium Stearate from your diet, you are able to get better immune readings (higher CD4, T cell, etc) from your doctors tests... I see it in many of my supplements, even in immune builders and would like to hear from some real world results before I decide to eliminate them or not. Thanks!"
11/03/2010: Merryanne from Orange City, Florida, Usa replies: "I did a google on magnesium stearate, it is mostly made from vegetable stuff and it may be from soy beans and I am led to believe it is. Soy will stop your body from absorbing all the iodine you need, and it blocks some of the absorbency of the vitamin and minerals your body needs and you will find soy products in 98% of all packaged products on the market, even starkist tuna has soy veg broth!!!! Linda in Florida"
11/03/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Tina... Magnesium Stearate is found in many compressed tablet forms of vitamins, minerals etc and is only used to actually help form the tablet. When I used Ascorbic Acid tablets in the past I would crush them up and add water as Ted advises. But this always produced a cloudy, milky solution. That is caused by the Mag Stearate. When I switched and used pure Ascorbic acid powder, the solution was always crystal clear. Being a waxy substance, Mag Stearate also interfere's with digestion and absorbtion of nutrients, and some people are actually allergic to it. The best forms of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to take are either in powdered form or in a capsule(containing powder). Avoid all tablets forms if you can."
11/03/2010: Tricia from Ireland replies: "I can't remember where I got this information so I can't substantiate it or reference it. I read somewhere in the past that magnesium stearate is used as an acceptable method of oiling the machinery used in making the supplements where the ingredients would come in contact and normal machinery oils could not be used"
11/04/2010: Tina from Princeton, Nj replies: "Hi Bill, thanks for your post. So magnesium stearate, from vegetable source or not, is best to be avoided? I thought so. I do try to buy my supplements either in gelatin form or as powder but in some cases, it is well nigh impossible. Calcium, for example, is hard to find in either of those mediums. What do you suggest?
I tried to use the shell of an organic egg ( I read that it is an excellent source of calcium in a book about natural care for preventing tooth decay and also for re-growing teeth if one has cavities) in a smoothie but there were still tiny pieces in my green smoothie ( I use a Vita blender). Thanks again for your helpful posts."
11/05/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Tina, my Quercitin, bought in the UK, powder in a gelatin pill also contained magnesium stearate! So it is not only the pills that have it. I suppose they use it when they ground the components to powder so that they don't glue to the machines. By now I am really confused, I have read that it is bad, also that it doesn't quite matter...... One never knows who is telling the truth!"
11/05/2010: Tina from Princeton, N J replies: "Hi Francisca. As soon as I read your post, I went and checked the ingredients on the two supplements I have in powder form: Ascorbic acid from Trader Joe's and MSM from Jarrow. Both of them do not mention magnesium stearate! The MSM mentions silicon dioxide as an anti-caking agent and I will do some research on exactly what this is. The HA that I get from Source Naturals mentions stearic acid, as one of its ingredients - another name for magnesium stearate? Thanks for alerting me."
11/05/2010: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "Could someone point me to some scientific studies proving that Magnesium Stearate impedes immune function. I am wondering if this is just a sales pitch for some companies to sell their vitamins against a competitor. Personally, I would prefer my supplements to be without it or any fillers but still need some proof to it's harm."
11/06/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Rob, if you do a Google you will find enough page against and pro magnesium stearate. Difficult to tell.... And some say that it is indeed a sales pitch by some companies. I don't know what to believe but this morning I talked to a lady in an excellent health shop where I go quite often and she told me that she is convinced that magnesium stearate only helps the manufacturers make better quality supplements (something I had already read online! ). I have to say that the people working in this shop seem not only to be very well informed but the customer care is also very good: everything you buy is in their computer so that they can check next time, they really take the time for you.... I love going there.Still.... They can't know everything and nowadays more than ever there always seem to be two different opinions on everything! I asked her about Monosodium Glutamate and similar components on some of their products and although none contained MSG as such others contained similar products which she had no idea also seem to contain MSG. The world we live in is so very complicated that making an informed choice is very hard. Therefore.... I did buy the supplements and some do have magnesium stearate. There weren't other choices..... But in the end, was this spread because someone found a way of selling his products to a wider public? No idea! "
11/06/2010: Lolly from Brooklyn, Ny replies: "Made from hydrogenated palm or cottenseed oil, or occasionally even beef tallow, it is used to lubricate each particle comprising a capsule or tablet containing it. (This speeds up the manufacturing process). However, it reduces bioavailability of the capsules' nutritional content by up to 65%, impairs T cell activity, can cause liver toxicity, and carries a high pesticide residue."
01/09/2011: Maria from Sarasota, Fl replies: "magnesium stearate has been an issue a long time but only recently has it been exposed as not something you want in your supplements. the company vpnutrition has never had mag/veg stearate in their products and they ship all over the world."

I urge everyone that wants to retain the privilege of having a site like EC and its helpful information, as well as the privilege of being able to read about and buy the safer alternatives of vitamins, minerals, supplements and herbals to voice their opinions there very quickly. The route the FDA is taking now could even conceivably be used to abolish internet sites like EC or the Cancertutor.com.

[WARNING!] 11/22/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "Here is alert from Natural Solutions Foundation re FDA trying to sneak through a law making it against the law for anyone to ship vitamins, minerals, supplements across state lines. If they succeed this time everyone had better get the books to learn to identify and collect their own herbal remedies. This is the 3rd time that I know of that medicine has attempted to make all vitamins, minerals and supplements under medical control (prescription only) and since they have the big pharmaceuticals joining with the AMA and attacking from outside the US first (has already been passed in Australia & Canada I think), I am afraid they are going to succeed unless enough people react in a hurry to make them back off. If EC readers will clink on a link to their site they will only have to put in their name & email address & click on "send my e-mail" to register protest.

Studies showed that benefits included fewer fine lines, smoother surface, less under-eye puffiness and increased skin tone and elasticity... now get this... IN JUST TWO WEEKS! Take at least 2 mg (I am going to take 4 mg) every day. Because it is oil soluable, take it with food and your other oil vitamins for it to absorb best. [YEA] 09/20/2008: Ellen from New Canaan, CT writes: "I was at Trader Joe's last week and was browsing through their line of supplements. One supplement in particular caught my eye - sublingual folic acid, b6 and b12. I had been seeing some good information on the web about the b vits, so I decided to buy it. (cheap by the way.) The one thing I noticed immediately is I am in such a darn good mood after I take it! I forgot to take one pill 2 days ago and some pms irritability set in. Took my vitamin and within half an hour, my mood improved. I think this may be a great supplement for those with depression or anxiety. Here's some info about folic acid on Dr. Mercola's site: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2002/07/06/folic-acid-part-two.aspx. So it may be the folic acid that is enhancing my mood, I don't know."

BLOOD WORK
03/08/2010: Patti from Ewing, Nj Usa writes: "hello, The last time I had to have a blood work up- I had to fast the night before and the following morning, after giving several viles of blood-I passed out. This was about 20 years ago. I have a phobia about passing out. My Dr is telling me to get the full blood work up and when I told him I was afraid of passing out, he wrote a note on my chart telling the clinic to have me lay down. He then said it's all in my head anyway. (I did not like that response but was in the waiting room as he told me this so I didn't follow up.) So now I am procrastinating. Not getting the work done that I need. I thought I read a while ago that there is a blood test available where they take a much smaller amount of blood and can still get all of the results. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or does anyone else have experience with getting blood work where they you don't have to pass out from not eating, then having all that blood taken?
Thanks!
Patti"
03/11/2010: Patti from Ewing, Nj replies: "Thank you so much to Dj frm Pdx.....It took me forever to find this Doctor and it was only because a few people in the health food store told me that he had sent them in there rather than giving them meds. That pleased me, but I wasn't happy at all with the Doctors comment either. I see him in two weeks and I don't have a problem telling him how I felt. At the time I was on my way out while he was heading in to see his next patient.
You are right, I may have outgrown it too, you are right. Thank you for your support, I do think I'm the only one. I hear friends going to get blood work and surgeries, and they seem so non-chalant about it.
I'm already squeamish with just the blood work, I can't imagine surgery!
Thanks again,Patti"

08/06/2011: Drunken Monkey from Flagstaff, Az writes: "I am a male in my low 40s. I have been cured or mostly cured of fibromyalgia and had wilsons thyroid which has improved after one full round of treatment. I have had a lot of sinus issues as well. In additon I was diagnosed with osteoperosis around age 37. Also had CFS and have high cholesterol. I was visiting te gym from 3 to 5 days per week but not getting anywhere. I suspect most of my problems were a result of the american diet, I cut sodas out in 2006. I am now eating about 5 healthy dinners per week.
I started taking collagen recently, one a day for first week then two a day. In the frst few days I noticed an my neck and should muscles really lossen up, I have never experienced anything like this. Within two weeks my neck and shoulders felt great. I am more relaxed now, have more energy and feel musch better. My workouts at the gym feel more productive and I sleep less.
can someone help me understand why collagen supplements are helping? and if there might be improvements to other conditions?"

CRAVINGS NEED SUPPLEMENTATION

[YEA] 08/13/2008: Angela from Tallahassee, Florida writes: "In response to the lady who ate everyone's ice and craved lemons. Eating ice is a common sign of anemia. You are/were deficient in iron. A very serious problem. Lemons are nature's natural antibiotic. Our bodies "know" what they need. When we crave chocolate we are deficient in the minerals chromium and vanadium and these deficiencies are the cause of diabetes. Just "know" that when you are craving something your body is trying to tell you it's seriously deficient in minerals, vitamins, amino acids, essential fatty acids, etc. If you are craving sugary, salty, etc things, maybe even things that are not even "food" substances, get yourself on a high quality LIQUID mineral suppliment immediately and start taking vitamins (liquid if possible) in addition to them. (There are 92 so you can't get by with taking 5 or 6.) You will find an almost immediate relief and healing. In addition, make sure you drink a tsp or 2 of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water every day to get your Ph in a slightly alkaline state. This environment is not conducive to viruses, bacterias, cancers, tumors, fungus, molds, etc. It cleanses your system, breaks down fat cells and cellulite, flushes out your kidneys and fat, helps or stops arthritis pain and multiple other problem areas including acid reflux. I could go on forever. I hope this helps someone to have a more healthy life!"

DHEA
Ratings:
|
10/27/2011: Beryl from London, Uk writes: "Hi
I'm past retirement age, and quite frankly I am feeling my age. Coping with life, housework, garden, caring for a sick husband is becoming evermore difficult. Reading about 7-Keto DHEA on the web, I'm wondering how safe it is to take? I believe there are cancer risks if taken over a prolonged period of time, but people who take it say it improves their energy levels, mood, skin, etc. And Ted recommends it. Has anyone had experience of taking it?
Beryl"
Replies10/27/2011: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Beryl, I have been using DHEA and sometimes rotating to 7-keto DHEA for over a decade and cannot report any negative side effects. As far as safety, when it comes to supplementing hormones, one must always have a somewhat healthy liver/gallbladder to ensure proper metabolism, otherwise you could wind up either wasting your money for lack of increased hormone levels, or experience negative side effects of too much hormone levels. Best bang-for-the-buck is the regular DHEA. At your age nothing less than 50mg daily as a starter imho. After 3 months try 100mg. Also consider other anti-aging proticols in addition to DHEA, like Growth Hormone boosters. As for the entire glandular system, I like a raw "MultiGlandular" supplement as it helps boost all glandular activity. There are also good herbal combination (I like Dr. Christopher's formulas) that nourish and cleanse glands, thereby improving health and longevity."
10/27/2011: Rob from Manhattan, Ny replies: "I would like to add a little caution to the advice of high doses of DHEA... I refer you to Dr. Sahelian view regarding DHEA... a more cautious approach of only 5mg occasionally http://www.raysahelian.com/dhea.htmlI take it only occasionally cutting up a 25mg tablet into quarters.. I find too high a dose makes me prone to anger.
also..Dr. Weil's view on DHEA which he can recommend for Lupus.. But... " I do not recommend that anyone take it without medical supervision. The downside of DHEA use is an increased risk of heart attack and breast and prostate cancer so it is vital that a physician monitors anyone taking it for lupus. Furthermore, over-the-counter brands of DHEA may not be as reliable as prescription forms."
Instead you may want to try some other "safer" tonics.. Like a combination Acetyl-l-Carnitine and Alpha Lipoic acid... & or Rhodiola, or Eleuthero (ginseng) or a good mushroom formula with Cordyceps.. Liver Force by New chapter is a good one.... (of course don't take my word but research and decide what feels right).... One more thing and the best advice... make sure you're getting your daily walks! ..."

[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/16/2011: Moshi from Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia writes: "DHEA can be convertd by your body into Estrogens & Testosterone. My experience when taking 25mg tablets for 6 weeks was that my DHEA blood syrum level jumped to more than the recommended range & I actually got morning sickness from too much estrogen! I now take a transdermal estrogen cream at about 5-7 mg per day & have experienced incresed energy levels.
Another problem for those who have a compromised liver function is that these hormones will build up un your liver & can cause damage! I also take a few days break every week or so to stop buildup. It appals me when I see adverts for 100 - 300mg DHEA as this is not something to play around with. My advice go slowly & get your hormone levels monitored until you find what works for you. Finally, transdermal cream has less impact on the liver."
Replies[WARNING!] 07/16/2011: Nat from Tampa, Florida, Usa replies: "People need to be aware that DHEA affects hormones, and that can have risks. I tried DHEA twice for about two weeks each time, and ended up having SVT (supraventricular tachycardia) both times. These episodes required ER visits.Apparently, DHEA can have an effect on testosterone levels in some men, and therefore acts similarly to a steroid. While I'm sure the dangers are not as pronounced as actual steroid use, any kind of interference with hormones can be risky.
Use caution with DHEA."

DIGESTIVES
02/20/2009: Nehna from Johannesburg, South Africa writes: "re: The use of a digestive to render supplements easily absorbed by the body
I just wanted to offer a little information that I picked up which is the difference between as most doctors would say expensive urine or well aided digestion of ingested nutrients...for those who have not fared well regarding the natural cures suggested it could be very possible that your body cannot synthesize nutrients because it does not have the digestive enzymes to do so, so everything you eat or drink is eliminated without benefiting the bodies requirements. Also a sure sign would be digestive issues and disorders and stagnant or food odour to the eliminated byproducts. So a digestive prescribed by a doctor or healthcare practitioner may help...An Ayurvedic doctor would prescribe Triphala...research it for yourself...I wish you Perfect Health...God Bless You! "

EDTA
12/07/2010: Self from Ny writes: "I just read about EDTA on a website by Elmer M. Cranton, M.D. (Harvard Medical School in 1964 graduate). I was thinking of taking EDTA two to three times a week for life to help with chelating heavy metals (e.g. My metal almagams, etc). This MD feels oral EDTA hasn't been proven effective in chelating heavy metals and that taken regularly over time can seriously get in the way of other nutrient absorption. This is the website article was saying oral EDTA remains in the digestive tract for long periods it interferes with absorption of essential nutrients. Thus EDTA by mouth on a regular basis for a prolonged time is potentially toxic: "EDTA is very poorly absorbed by mouth only about five percent. Although even that small amount does increase the urinary excretion of lead, it also removes and blocks uptake of much greater amounts of zinc, manganese, and other essential nutritional dietary elements. "
http://www.drcranton.com/chelation/oralchelation.htm
And I wondered if Spirulina/Chlorella and Cilantro would be better but read this on an autism site: "Chlorella and cilantro should be avoided because, although they gather mercury from the environment, they do not bind mercury as strongly as human tissue, so they will tend to release mercury into humans."
Oral DMSA (Dimercaptosuccinic Acid) seemed to be the chelator of choice in the two websites above. For autism, 3 days on and 11 days off of 400 mg of DMSA 3X a day for a 90 pound child.
http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/721071/DMSA_Chelation_Journal_for_10_Year_Old_Son_with_Autism
But there was a website with a man who used it to chelate heavy metals and the side effects were so intense he had to stop until after he had his metal amalgams removed. Even after, mercury tests didn't show too much of a difference (not that tests are necessarily accurate in measuring free heavy metals).
http://www.mercurypoisoned.com/protocol.html
SO WHAT TO DO TO CHELATE? I want to find something I can use one to two times a week for life because toxic modern world will most likely always subject us to some form of heavy metals (e.g. Vaccinations, metal amalgams, in fertilizers, old water pipes, etc)."
12/08/2010: Lynette from San Clemente, California 92672 replies: "Hi Self from NY:
I'm using a product that's working for me, lt's definitely cleaning out the heavy metals, it shows up on the Peripheral Blood Morphology Assessment l had done. It's called HMD (Heavy Metals Detox)the gentle chelator. Made by Natural Path, . I highly recommend the PBMA or sometimes known as Darkfield Microscopy. I think this is an astonishing test, not done by your HMO doctor, l think everyone should have this test done. Any questions e-mail me mayolynette(at)yahoo(dot)com
Good Luck"
12/08/2010: Self from Ny replies: "Thanks Lynette, the Peripheral Blood Morphology Assessment and Darkfield Microscopy is interesting when I have the money. Ok the HMD (Heavy Metals Detox) you use is based on chlorella and cilantro extract."
12/08/2010: Self from Ny replies: "I just came across this website about the history of oral EDTA, before the 1960s and before it was widely used as intravenous (IV) EDTA came about. In the shipyards they were exposed to lead and kept EDTA capsules to keep the lead toxicity down. Supposedly the government had the oral EDTA history wiped out when the IV EDTA came about that could only be administered by doctors. Some doctors have stood behind oral EDTA, like Dr. Gary F. Gordon, one of the founders of the American College of Advancement In Medicine (as it is now known). But others did not but it seems more because of the money made on IV EDTA. Dr. Gordon even argued with Dr. Cranton who wrote the anti-oral EDTA website page above. "At that time I accepted the claims made by Dr. Cranton and I was very vocal in also criticizing oral EDTA usage. Then Dr. Gordon posted onto his website a large number of studies, and his own opinion, that oral chelation was a valid therapy, based on use of oral EDTA (as well as Cysteine and N AcetylCysteine -- NAC). "
You can read more about it here:
http://www.chelationtherapyonline.com/PreventCancer/p100.htm
There's just so much manipulative disinformation out there but I think its good to research it and try to find some degree of the truth."
12/10/2010: Rob from Manhattan, Ny replies: "I had looked into and experimented with Zeolite. I ended up buying a very expensive liquid brand though will not continue with it, since it is multi level marketing and a ridiculous price. (Waiora, where you have some on the internet promising objective advice, with a free book which is just a sales tactic)Other brands to consider are Zeoforce (iHerb may have best price) and Omica (Lisa's suggestion). There is so much conflicting advice between powders and liquid, all trying to negate the other. However it appears there are some competent studies showing that heavy metal release is greater after taking zeolite and tapers after continued use. Should you give it a try, let us know your results and what brand you might decide upon and why. Best of health to you."

[QUESTION] 01/20/2009: Rose from Steedman, MO writes: "Just wondered if anyone knows anything about Ester-E? It seems to be a new thing. I've heard of Ester-C, and know that Ted seems to like the Ester-C (oil soluble) when combined with a water soluble vitamin C.
I've just recently noticed this form of E on the store shelves. The information on a bottle I picked up says "natural form of vitamin e, d-Alpha Tocopherol plus d-Beta, d-Gamma, d-Delta Tocopherols."

Replies02/10/2011: Dawn from Atlanta, Ga replies: "My family and I have been using ganoderma for a little over 6 months now. My husband and I have noticed we have more energy and he has lost weight. He has noticed too that his joints don't ache like they have for years. I have 2 children and I give them ganoderma and they have not been sick a lot this winter. You do want to make sure you get log harvested ganoderma and not plastic bag harvested. I'd be glad to share where we get ours from. dawnchayes(at)gmail(dot)com "

GENERAL FEEDBACK
10/21/2011: Karenina from Southampton, Uk writes: "Hi Ted, my supplements are in capsule form. I tried dissolving one in a glass of water which took only 5 minutes to dissolve but the contents which look like white powder settled to the bottom and did not dissolve. Is that good or bad? Would be most grateful for your response.
Many thanks, Karenina"

Has anyone else found a connection? Thank you."
