Distilled Water to Chelate Heavy Metals

Water is probably the most important and frequently overlooked contribution to our overall diets, and finding the safest and healthiest source of drinking water has only gotten more complicated through the years. Bottled water, tap water, spring water, osmotic water, filtered water, and distilled water all have their proponents.

Distilled water in particular is often preferred for its greater clarity. The distillation process (boiling water and collecting the condensed evaporative steam) kills off pathogens and removes virtually all contaminants from the source water. However, this removes the virtuous components of a natural water source at the same time, including essential minerals.

NB: Fluoride is not removed in the distillation process, and in some cases aluminum ions can be introduced to the water through distillation.

Overall, distilled water can be a good way to otherwise avoid tainted water sources, but most drinking water sources are generally safe. Some specific cases definitely require distilled water or similar, but for most people it is probably unnecessary. As to the lack of mineral content, most of our dietary mineral intake is food-based, and so our water sources should make minimal differences one way or the other.

I read the posts about drinking water.

I need to avoid fluoride and all the other contaminates in our public drinking water. I am very sick and unable to take care of my basic needs so I need the easiest and most affordable solution. I trust this site, Ted and Bill and I also trust Dr. Weil. So it is confusing to me when their advice contradicts one another. Dr. Weil drinks "distilled water" and distilled is the easiest for me. I even added T*** Mineral Drops to it.

Distilled water is the easiest for me.

I don't like drinking water from plastic jugs no matter what kind of water it is. I used to get home delivery of distilled water but I can't find home delivery of glass bottles. Spring water is impossible to trust even ones saying they come from a spring - because when I do further research it says it comes from a Municipal Water Company.

I used to work in retail and I've seen those pallets of gallon filled jugs sit out in the hot summer sun. You never know when the plastic is going to leach into your water.

I bought a home distiller but even some of its parts are plastic. I spent a lot of money on it but the water it makes smells moldy so I don't use it. The home made distillers I find on youtube all use rubbermaid plastic containers or worse.

Water is so important to our health. I know this thread already exists here on this website. I hope to continue the conversation so that I can make 1 comprehensive list for us all that would include the costs, level of difficulty and pros and cons while also addressing conflicting research such as "distilled water leaches minerals fact or fiction?".

Dr. Weil drinks distilled water.

Ted's Borax/H20 baths help me immensely but then again, I'm bathing in tap water!! I don't have the money to filter my bathroom as well.

I have read him through the years. He has so many red flags on many health matters that it is scary. Anyone trusting him will need all the luck that can get. I think Ted would be aghast at Weil's public stands on health matters. Trusting both Ted and Weils is living in contradiction.

SupportTed: I did the same as you worry. I read an article one time that said the nano pollutants from car exhausts are 300x as potent as regular sized. I spend 8 hours/day in a down town mall. I am exposed to a lot of pollution. In the 21st century there is a lot of pollution every where. First let me say that I drink 2 gallons of water per day all from plastic containers. I make 1 gallon a day water kefir in plastic. If the plastic leached into the kefir the microbes would die and they don't. I read the same articles you did. The coconut oil I take is in plastic. Reputable companies who sell their products in plastic have not been able to detect any plastic in their products. There are 2 things you can do to solve the pollution problem. Saponins from liquid yucca and insoluble fiber mop up the pollutants in the digestive tract before they get into the plasma. Soluble fiber, enzymes, and nutrients mop up the pollutants in the plasma before they get into the cells. Chia and apples are high in soluble fiber. Activated barley is high in enzymes. Raw organic and raw grass fed products are high in nutrients. The supplement highest in nutrients is rice bran solubles.

Prioris: I will second your observation as I have stopped altogether reading his daily or weekly publicity. Weil has obviously fallen off into his own little comfy, liberal world that doesn't challenge or remedy the real, hard core health concerns facing us moderns.

I have often wondered what a near-dead patient like me would encounter at his clinic. Needing radical intervention therapy, Weil would likely lecture me on dietary & lifestyle habits, and recommend relaxation and visual techniques, brushing & flossing my teeth, etc.

It was said earlier that adding sea salt to distilled water helps to absorb medicine better. But if you add sea salt to distilled water, isn't that like drinking ocean water? And everyone knows you can't drink ocean water.

Peter, I don't know about salt water helping absorption of medicine, but I do know that putting a small lick of salt (a few grains) on your tongue before drinking a glass of water is very useful and is nowhere near the concentration of sea water!

It's known that sharks breathe in sea water and they have been around a long time. When my dad had a heart attack the doctors put him on a low salt diet. That is bad advice. The chloride from salt is needed to make hydrochloric acid to digest food. Potassium, chloride, and sodium make electricity for the cells. Improperly processed table salt is bad for you. Tiny amounts of magnesium and potassium remove large amounts of excess sodium from the tissues. I take 6 grams of sun dried sea salt and 4 grams of dead sea salt every day. 1 gram of dead sea salt has 100mg. of magnesium and 50 mg of potassium. 23 oz. of sun dried sea salt can be purchased for $1.69. The sea salt in the grocery store is improperly processed. I get my salt from non gmo red miso. The orientals use sun dried sea salt in their products. Fish sauce from Thailand has sun dried sea salt. Salt, borax, antioxidants, acids, and enzymes from green papaya and pineapple dissolve hard stuff in the body like biofilm, kidney stones, and plaque.

I was reading about your distilled water for detoxing for two days only. I am using a marine calcium and mineral supplement and was told to add it to distilled water or reverse osmosis water to get better results in raising the ph to 10.5, because I am adding this supplement to the distilled water would you still say that distilled water is not good to drink for more than two days?. One serving size is 4.3 grams to 1/2 gallon of distilled water and sip on it throughout the day. I did notice great results in my blood under a dark field microscope in just a few weeks of using this product. Before I used this product my red blood cells were clotted together and were very stringy then after three weeks of dringking this product my red blood cells were perfectly round with white rings and nucleous in the center. So is the distilled water a bad thing to use long term??? thanks in advance for your feedback....

I do have a question to Ted or Dr. Andrew Weil, Natural Health, Natural Medicine....

I am drinking distilled water now for 9 years every day. I have a table top distiller. I am so glad to learn here, that i should add baking soda & sea salt to it. Yes, and i will also add a tiny bit of borax now to my 5 gallon container, thanks so much for the info.

Sofar i did often add colloidal silver, as i have one of those, too.

Now i would like to know, does a distiller (via vaporization, like mine) take out the fluoride & chlorine??? Nano-particles? I sure hope so.

Distilled water / Detoxification

I feel compelled to comment on Ted's assertion that distilled water should only be taken for 1-2 days for the need of detoxifying heavy metals.

If someone is found to be seriously contaminated with mercury or other heavy metals, the detoxification process can take several months and even up to 2 years. In some cases is must be done very, very slowly in order to keep the side effects to a minimum. I'm not sure about distilled water, but detoxification takes much longer than 2 days.

Dr. Andrew Cutler has studied this for over 10 years, helping people recover from autism, CFS, fibromyalgia, and even misdiagnosed multiple sclerosis using his specific detailed protocol. A google search will turn up more information.

Here is a updated summary of my view on distilled water:

1. Long term used of distilled water is not healthy
2. Distilled water only short term use may help detoxify, but never use more than for a couple of days.
3. Distilled water depletes the body of bicarbonates, causing metabolic acidosis in the long run.
4. Some people use medicine added to distilled water to help absorption. This doesn't work for me because you are going from a lower concentration of distilled water to a higher concentration blood. Hence, more concentration of blood would not help absorption.
5. In Traditional Chinese medicine, and I agree, adding a small amount of salt (e.g. preferably sea salt) helps absorption of medicine better then without. The body absorbs substances along the intestinal lining using a mechanism called the sodium pump mechanism. Therefore, if there is sodium along with the supplements, they are then pumped into the body, thus increasing absorption. This is also a long recognized practice in traditional chinese and traditional based medicine.

Additional Information NOT mentioned previously are:

1. Sea salt is the best detoxification as it corrects electrolytic imbalance
2. Sea salt solution generally works better then distilled water.
3. Allergies in general is best handled with a sea salt remedy. For example 1 teaspoon per glass of water. A distilled water may not work.
4. Most of the toxicity of drinking water we have today is from tap water with free metals that is causing the problems. Most tap water have this problem because of our faucets and old pipe plumbing. Hence some people thinks distilled water works better. In practice a bottled or mineral water will work better because, the manufacturers don't generally have any free metals due to stricter standards.
5. Some people who tries to avoid all the water by drinking a close alternative, Reverse Osmosis water, won't have the problem of free metals, and is close to distilled water. To restore some of the naturalness of water, a sea salt of 1/4 teaspoon and perhaps 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda is very helpful. I have found that the major source of magnesium in humans mostly come from our drinking water supplies, but this may need to be supplemented on occasion too.

Dear Peter:

A distilled water used for battery acid is not even a distilled water. The reason why I know is when preparing colloidal silver, the water simply wasn't pure. In fact the ones they use for distilled water for battery acid were worse than tap water. The best distilled water is sold at Union Chemicals on Rajadamri Road. However many other chemical suppliers along the Rajadamri street such as Vittayasom and a few other may also have distilled water. In any event I don't use distilled water. A close alternative to distilled water is the Reverse Osmosis water, which must be reconstituted by adding sea salt still. The addition of sea salt from reverse osmosis water used about between 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt. Which sea salt is best is the ones with the highest magnesium levels such as dead sea salt. I am not familiar with other brands as I have not looked into in great detail. A deep sea sea salt is sold in aquarium fish shops where their source of sea salt is purified and has more minerals also and is used in similar concentration between 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon per liter of water, and perhaps some baking soda such as 1/8 teaspon or 1/16 teaspoon per liter is possible. If too much baking soda is added along with sea salt in any great quantity it becomes a laxative.

Hi Ted,

I've just brought a reverse osmosis, you mention to add bicarb and sea salt to the RO'd water: 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon bicarb, is that per litre? And do I do it to every litre? Also you mention lemon juice and bicarb to make it an antioxidant, so do I add, lemon juice, [if so, how much] bicarb and salt?

I have a question on water. Ted says at first distilled water is no good it causes the body to be acidic then he says its good it pulls all toxic materials out but leaves minerals you need. im confused on the consensus is distilled good or bad? what about ionized alkaline water? thanks.

In very few instances that the body needs to detoxify of toxic substances, distilled water is used. You can also add the charcoal. The reason why the unneeded minerals are removed faster is that it is the free heavy metals that I am talking about. The organically bound minerals, which is required by the body are more difficult to remove.

The distilled water is only used for short-term such as one or two days, for treatment of allergies where the toxic allergens is unknown, and the suspect is the drinking water, or the need to remove certain excess substances not needed by the body out.

In general, I wouldn't drink distilled water. A good mineral water is generally better. I have tested that a general mineral water is at least superior to energized water, and magnetized water in bean sprouts growth experiments.

Ionized alkaline water depends on the pH and the mineral contents. Too high of a pH is not good anyway. The mineral contents tend to be a bit imbalanced favoring more left sided minerals on the periodic table, to be a bit higher, such as Magnesium calcium, boron, etc. The issue of alkaline water is a complicated one, since a good alkaline water also depends on how much bicarbonates it has. The problem about alkaline water is it depends on the source, and the source varies. Therefore the old fashioned way is either purchasing a good mineral bottled water, or make your own, by adding some sea salts and baking soda, being the simplest of all formula from a Reverse Osmosis water.

I have done tests on natural water, which has yet to revealed her secrets, which I have not fully understood. But the tiny amount of hydrogen gas, in a given water has a healing properties, and are found in large amounts in an alkaline water. Unfortunately, trace amounts of hydrogen gas (in parts per million) do not stay in the water very long, and must be drank immediately. Here is proof: i recently bought a water called Hydrogen water, which has high amounts of hydrogen. Upon opening the bottle in the first 1 minute, the ORP(Oxidation Reduction Potential) reading is a negative -400 millivolts. Within five minutes the reading dropped to only -200 millivolts. Within ten minutes it went lower still closer to -150 millivolts for example. But there's a catch, both baking soda mixed with ACV, and baking soda mixed with lime, or lemon has a steady -150 millivolts or more, and lasts for several hours at least. The antioxidant effect of this natural elements come usually from the vitamin C content and when it becomes alkaline, the sodium ascorbate acts like an antioxidant water, without the expensive machinery.

It is this hydrogen content that farmers really need to add in the water to accelerate their plant growth. Irrigation water a plant just won't grow without the natural rain. But i suspect a trace amounts of ozone or hydrogen peroxide and hydrogen gas is what is needed. When I say trace, I mean 1 drop of 3% hydrogen peroxide in a 20 liter water well stirred. Or a hydrogen gas bubbled with a stone bubbler you buy from the aquarium shops for only a couple of seconds. How and why this it works is that a precious rainwater contains trace amounts of ozone, hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen, and methylsulfonylmethane. I think this is the key to helping farmers increase their productivity. The secret is in the rain. Farmers have known this for centuries, and it is about time we try to at least imitate what nature has been trying to tell us.

Distilled water is not safe, it lacks bicarbonates and minerals and yes, it is acid forming to the body. Part of the reason why our body is acid is that it lacks enough bicarbonates necessary to neutralize the acid. If the minerals are lacking, the body is quite often deprived of mostly magnesium and calcium. In certain cases it is possible to re mineralized the water by adding enough fulvic acid to get a very light brown color and adding enough bicarbonates (from baking soda), as well as magnesium and calcium which is often rich in a good quality sea salt. The reason I mentioned this is even ordinary filtered water are also devoid in some ways of magnesium, bicarbonates and mineral during the filtration process, especially those people who use Reverse Osmosis water. In some cases some people had to use Reverse Osmosis water, with added sea salt, baking soda for example because of high free radical heavy metals present in our drinking water such as mercury, lead, copper, cadmium, etc.

Whenever the water lacks the proper bicarbonates to neutralize the water in a distilled water your body basically becomes acid. Long term acidity causes acid blood, which is like acid rain, causes the calcium from the bones to be leeched out and as a result, the tissues and organ have too much of calcium clogging the system.

Therefore distilled water is generally not recommended as a regular drinking water, since most of our body usually receives bicarbonates from the water we drink than from the food we eat. Ted

This is the first time I've heard about this. From my understanding, distilled water is nothing but water...in it's purest sense. About 3 months ago I went out and bought 2 5-gallon water tubs to fill with water. I DO NOT like to drink water with chlorine or floride in it (I even have a shower filter that removes those elements). That encouraged me to fill with reverse osmosis water. Then there were news reports about traces of Rx drugs being in our drinking water. With a fear of this added to it I turned to distilled water (with the hopes that there won't be traces of anything is it). I am a bit scared to trust plain reverse osmosis and would like to stay with distilled unless someone can assure me that my fears are "silly". If I do stick with distilled water, what foods can I implement into my diet that will replace any of the missing elements that were removed from my water? Also, how do I know if my body is acidic? I personally thought I was in good health.

Distilled water does not leech minerals out of the body. This is an urban legend. The same is also true even if you take EDTA to get the heavy toxic metals out. Research shows that distilled water gets rid of free radical metals out of the body - the one that is not bound to any proteins. EDTA will not pull any metal out of any mineral bound protein either. This is also true of distilled water. What distilled water does do is it gets unneeded toxins out of the body. One problem remains, is that many brands of distilled water are not distilled water, if you read the find print or check directly with the company. Sometimes the fine print says, made from "filtered water". A distilled water is not filtered water, it is water that is boiled and the steam collected makes distilled water.

Again, if you have a toxic metal buildup such as cadmium, mercury and arsenic, you best course of action to find the source, is certain canned foods. Also, air pollution is another source of cadmium. The reason is simple, many years back when gasoline had lead, the desire to remove lead from gasoline, was replaced by cadmium. So today, the lead is very low, but cadmium is very high from car and truck emissions whenever gasoline is burned. Perhaps the source of toxic metal also comes from air pollution.

Your best source of action is to take chinese parsley (aka cilantro). There was a study that said that chinese parsley will completely remove free radical toxic metals within a course of 1 month. Of course the assumed dosages is probably 1/2 cup per day for 30 days. You can eat them with foods. I now use chinese parsley as a gold standard for removal of toxic metal. Even Japanese hospitals use it.

Does distilled water rob the body of essential minerals?
No, this is physiologically impossible. Some have been lead to believe that because distilled water is so pure, it will leach healthy minerals and trace elements from the body. In our bodies distilled water cleans out our impurities and replenishes the essential nutrient required for human life: pure, clean, healthy water. Our cells use the organic minerals for body growth and maintenance; however, the impurities that the body cannot make us of are flushed out with distilled water. Hello Peter, I believe that another EC reader sent in a detox formula that she got from a Japanese doctor. It is probably posted on EC a year or two back but I think the formula was 1 cup extra virgin olive oil, 2 large bunches of cilantro, and 8 cloves of garlic. Put all in blender and puree. I think the instructions were 1 tsp. 3 times per day. I have tried it and the taste is rather pleasant. Goes great on a slice of whole grain bread.

The answer to your question is until the same blood test that said you had an elevated cadmium level says that it is normal range or negative. Some do suggest that you detox for 5 days and off for 2 days & repeat cycles of same timing.

Have you any idea of where you are acquiring or being exposed to all this cadmium? If so, is it something you can eliminate?

It appears that you can prolong drinking of distilled water by eating a daily alotment of the following:

Rice {1 cup per day 922 mg of magnesium}

Bananas {11 fruit per day at 4200 mg of potassium/bicarbonates}

Figs {8 fruit per day 1012mg of calcium}

or Tahini Paste {8 heaped teaspoons 1032 mg of calcium}


  1. Minerals are inorganic as they exist naturally in the soil and water.
  2. Minerals are organic as they exist in plants and animals.
  3. Only plants can transform inorganic minerals into organic minerals.
  4. Animals must eat plants or plant-eating animals to obtain their organic minerals.
  5. Inorganic minerals are useless and injurious to the animal organism.

Please never supplement minerals from sea water or mineral water as these are inorganic and can injure your body or cause death, only obtain your organic minerals from plants and fruit. Many people drink acidic forms of rain water throughout the world, even people in New Mexico drink solar stilled water with no harm to their bodies or claimed deaths.

I have been using thiosulfate to de-chlorinate our tap water whenever we run out of distilled water. But I've just realized that table salt is sodium chloride. When I put thiosulfate in the water to make soup, and then add salt and thiosulfate, does it bind the chlorine from the salt? And if it does, is this freed sodium something to worry about. Thanks



Using Iodine to Purify Your Water
Iodine is a very effective method for water purification. Iodine destroys bacteria, viruses and cysts. Its action is dependent on the concentration of iodine, the water temperature and duration of contact. For example, a concentration of 8 mgs per litre at 20 degrees centigrade will destroy all pathogens if left for 10 minutes. Lower concentrations and lower water temperatures require a longer duration of action. Iodine has been used safely for periods of several months; however, it is not known whether there are adverse effects associated with longer term use.
