[YEA] 08/06/2011: Gloria from Chicago, Il: "I have used diatomaceous earth now for a couple of years. It is incredible and safe (as long as you don't use the pool-grade stuff), and works.
I have used it for fleas by just applying it on a wood floor and sweeping it to get it in the cracks and along the baseboard. I also applied it gently to one of my cats. I use the product at http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Only-Natural-Pet-All-in-One-Flea-Remedy/999013.aspx and follow their instructions. There are a lot of reviews of this product on this page.
Believe it or not, I also used this particular DE product to get rid of bedbugs by applying it along the baseboards in all 3 bedrooms. Bedbugs gone - permanently. I used a really small paintbrush to apply and spread it (it was time-consuming and difficult - furniture had to be moved, etc. but it was worth it), and I shaked it as little as possible to prevent any dust flying.
It also got rid of an ant problem I had - I hate killing anything, but I had no choice and over the course of several days the ants diminished until they were completely gone. I applied it in 2 places - where they were coming in my house, and the threshold to my kitchen that they were crossing over.
I am NOT associated in any way with onlynaturalpet.com, just have had great results."
[YEA] 06/17/2011: Melissa from Kamloops, Bc: "Diatomaceous earth is amazing! It works wonders as a dust bath for fleas on my dogs and I even had a friend that used it for bed bugs! Bed bugs is apparently a huge epidemic right now and so I thought I would share what my friend learned from her experience. As everyone has suggested make sure you use food grade d.e. but also make sure that it is in a powdered granulation... Not fine! And most importantly she was told not to put it right on top of the matress but rather to put it in the cracks and crevices, in the boxspring, on the headboard, etc. Where the bed bugs will hide!"
10/29/2010: Maddy from Pomfret Center, Ct: "Diatomaceous Earth, I have been reading alot about and I am planning on starting doing it for my BP issues. I bought it some time ago for flea control with my dog. I knew about the pest insecticide value of this product but had no idea about the human wonder drug reputation that it has."
04/11/2010: Webuddy from Bangor, Me: "I use Diatomaceous Earth. FOOD GRADE kind. It is mined from fresh water deposits and does not harm people or animals. Dont breathe in the dust while you are applying it as it is unsafe for your lungs. Once it is applied it is fine.
It is amazing! My daughter and I both drink about 1 Tbs a day with plenty of water, or sprinkled in yogurt. It has helped our digestive systems as we both have issues with constipation and diarrhea depending on the day.
I also made a paste with 1 Tbs DE, 3 Tbs water,1 Tbs olive oil and 1 drop of peppermint oil and used it as a face mask. Rub on gently and let dry for about 5 minutes and wash off-smooth and soft!
For my pets I use DE to get rid of fleas. I brush it into their fur making sure it doesn't get in their eyes or face. I also mix a couple teaspoons in their wet food to get rid of worms. I do this every other day. Also, I put it on my rugs and the bedding and leave it there a few days then vacuum up a couple times a month. This has taken care of a severe infestation that has not returned since started.
This is a product that is worth doing a search on the internet about. DO NOT USE POOL GRADE. ONLY FOOD GRADE."
08/17/2009: Peggy Sue Chan from South Houston, Texas, USA: "To Helpplz: I buy mine at a feed store, 50 lbs for $21.00. It's real name is Diatomite Silica. You can buy it at nurseries and garden centers, too, but for far more expensive. We drink ours. I don't have hot flashes when I drink it. I took several tablespoons twice daily, and the next day the flashes quit. I vacationed in the Carribbean without air conditioning for two weeks, and the flashes still didn't happen.
I also quit having gluteal hamstring pulls--I have no idea why they quit the day after I began taking the silica. I'd had them for 5 years previously, as long as I'd been running. However, four months ago I changed my running form from heel strike to forefoot strike, and the hamstring pulls never recurred, even without my taking silica. Strange, but my knees and ankles quit hurting when I changed form, too.
When I quit taking silica, however, my hot flashes returned.
I can't tell what else silica did for me because I am not aware of having any other health problems."
Pain, Loss of Energy
[YEA] 05/20/2013: Josh from Maryland: "I've been using food grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) for three days now and being diagnosed with sciatica and two bulging disc. Constant pain everyday and always drained of energy. I can say I have not felt so good in such a short period of time in my life. The pain is subsiding and dulling down. My blood pressure is dropping. I feel so much more energy. It's almost too good to be true to call this a miracle dirt but by god it's making some magic happen. I recommend this whole heartedly to people who have pain and loss of energy."Replies
05/21/2013: Candy from Fort Madison, Iowa replies: "How much do you take?"
03/21/2010: Doomed from Washington, Dc: "Please use food grade Diatomaceous Earth. I have used this substance and this is what happens:
(1) It will give you serious constipation if you don't consume an equal ratio of soluble fiber and drink lots of water with it.
(2) It will definitely scare the worms right out of your gut and into your other organs. Claims of one pooping tons of shredded worms are false. You probably won't see anything pass out of your bowels. It will simply eliminate the sensation of the worms slithering around in your colon because the worms will evacuate to other parts of your body.
(3) It's best to use this in conjunction with a proper diet ...vegan or vegetarian is best...and a diet free of sugar and lard.
(4) This will not cure anyone of parasites but it will manage the condition in your gut (only).
(5) A good holistic approach to managing round worm infection would be to ingest:
-Drink teas containing distilled water and avoid tap water altogether
-Drink original Green Tea daily
- Drink raw garlic tea daily....let a few pieces of raw garlic steep in hot water for about 15 minutes then drink it
-ingest Odorless Aged Garlic tablets daily
-ingest Black Walnut and Wormwood tincture daily
-Eat lots of green leafy raw vegetables (that have been properly washed!)
-ingest Goldenseal tea periodically
-ingest Fenugreek tea periodically
-Eat lots of plain yogurt daily
-DO NOT consume ANYTHING which contains sugar or sugar bi-products...This would include High Fructose items (Worms ADORE sugar and so does cancer)
-Step up your personal hygiene and make sure that you are not reinfecting yourself.... If you infect a housemate, your problem is compounded and they may or may not seek treatment too and your recovery will take that much longer
-Continue to educate yourself about legitimate treatments out there and follow them if you feel it will benefit you
Foremost and above all, please seek help from a physician. If you think your physician is an idiot, seek out the opinion of other physicians... Just don't stop trying to get your health needs met simply because some ass tells you that he or she cannot find anything wrong with you.
[YEA] 01/30/2012: Nichole from Middletown, Ohio Usa: "SWEET! Got some more good news on treatment for parvo, the puppy has been doing just great and amazing, her mother however, was not so lucky and came down with the parvo and quickly progressed to vomiting blood, this began last night. This morning she was given an anti-nausea pill (not sure what kind) and I was called about her condition, they came over quickly to get some phosphorous that we added two pills to the original arsenicum spritz bottle, she was given this every 15 minutes for an hour and a half and I recommended that it be given again for every hour for four more hours then reassess. At this time she was not throwing up from the anti-nausea pill and was then given a dose of pepto with a tablespoon of DE mixed in with a bit of water so it wasnt pasty. Shortly after she had a bout of diarrhea and began shivering, this was at 11:20 AM.
I called to check in on her just now and she has not vomited again, has not had any more diarrhea, was given a second dose of the DE in plain water and has only received homeopathics and DE alone since then. She is acting like herself again, has been able to sleep for the first time since yesterday and even went out to pee. Sounds like we have another parvo recovery!!! Our Heavenly Father has been so amazing, that despite living in this fallen world he did not leave us without healing"
[YEA] 01/26/2012: Nichole from Middletown, Ohio Usa: "The remedies used here are Diatomaceous Earth (food Grade) and the homeopathic Arsenicum Album...
*1-24-12* Got some great info I wanted to share, last night around 7 or so my friend called to tell me about her friend's puppy that they just found out from the vet she had Parvo, she was in the first stages of it which is lethargy and loss of appetite... So they came over to pick up some Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) (which kills viruses and bacteria quickly) and arsenicum album. Which is the homeopathic remedy of choice for Parvo... She gave 4 doses of the arsenicum album (2 pills placed in a 2 ounce amber spritzer bottle, hit on palm of hand 8 times before each dose) last night 1 dose per hour for 4 hours and I think two doses of the DE at 1/2 teaspoon per dose. I told her for today to give the arsenicum every 3 hours and the DE 2-3 times (she actually gave a dose of the Arsenicum and the DE both every 2-3 hours throughout the second day). So this morning at 10:30 I called to check in on the puppy and she had got up and gone downstairs TWICE to go potty already! Then I got a call a hour and a half later and the puppy was eating some chicken! She hadn't started drinking yet but already those two things are great improvements! Thank God for His perfect medicine!!! Will keep y'all updated as I hear them...
*Update at 7pm 1-24-12
So far she's been eating more, going outside on her own to potty and playing with her momma, not drinking but peeing so she's still improving greatly, woohoo!!!
* 1-26-12* Ok new update as of today, she began drinking today and is eating and acting normally again!!! WOW, 3 days from start of treatment to being back to a healthy state, I've recommended she continue at least one dose of DE everyday for the next 3 weeks just to make sure she doesn't catch it again, plus it has other health benefits. This treatment had fast results and if everything was purchased new for this specific instance would have run about $15 total, that's a HUGE difference between the other two options which is to let the dog die or hospitalize it which is extremely expensive as it runs for 5-7 days time with intensive care. I think I'd rather do the natural method that's much cheaper, much more effective, and much faster for healing. : D"
[YEA] 12/05/2011: Lynn from Peculiar, Mo: "My dog had a 2" diameter circle of mange on her back and I made a paste of diatomaceous earth and water and smeared it over the raw, hairless and black speckled area. I left it on for 2 days and then washed it off. Her skin was pink and healthy. Absolutely amazing. I put 1 tsp into her food every day and she has had no further skin issues."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 03/13/2010: Lesley from Neenah, Wi: "Ted, or anyone else, have any of you tried food grade diatomacious earth (DE)? It sure SEEMS to dry everything up fast, including MY white heads, dogs white heads, dogs' black heads (which came pooping out themselves, to be combed out easily with a flea comb) much else. It seems to be so effective at drying out shells/bodies of insects (fleas etc) and so safe, it made me try to use it as a dusting powder on the dog at the site of demodex infection. It certainly SEEMED to work.
I was so pleased (this before Dx with demodex). The vet thought TOO drying and told me to stop as antibiotics were started. My little old shih tzu girl became worse and worse.
When I restarted, (after visiting dog dermatologist who also said not to use, and AFTER things were looking really bad again) once again it all seemed to calm right down.
I also contacted a holistic vet who endorsed it on the site that I purchased the product from and she said it could be used as a cure for generalized demodex, but that I had to purchase her "package" ($125) for her further help.
Somehow, that seemed funny to me--my experience is vets who have answers try to give out that info as much as possible. Am I overly suspicious?
07/28/2012: Vreed27 from Seattle, Wa replies: "Yes she is trying to get your money. You can buy ten pounds of Food Grade DE on the internet for about $20 with shipping included!"
01/19/2010: Gwenda from Gulfport Fla, Fla: "thanks for this info, my dog a cocker has ear problems all the time, the vet was charging me a fortune for a cream that as soon as it was used up immediately returned, i came looking online just in case there might be a remedy and i have the diamomceous earth at home here and will try it... as you see i too live in Gulfport fla"
[YEA] 07/28/2009: flicka_sugar from Pahrump, Nevada: "I use diatamaceous earth (or dirt as I affectionately call it) with all my animals. I have horses and cattle who get 1oz/day in the spring and fall and 2oz/day in the summer to help with fly control. The nice side benefit is I also have less problems with parasites when they are on this. I also give it to my pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, alpacas, dogs, and cats. it works great and the farrier even comments on how little pest problems we have compared to other farms, which is nice to have few flies with all the animals. Also because of the effect on parasites and our local weather I only have to strongly deworm about 2x per year instead of deworming every 8 weeks for the horses and such."
[YEA] 04/18/2008: Marisa from San Jose, USA: "My cat was miserable and his ear stank. I put a pinch of diatomaceous earth (swimming pool filter grade)in each ear. He seemed to be a bit better in about 40 minutes. He has stopped shaking his head and seems less lethargic. We'll see if he needs something more, (if he has a bacterial infection. His ear smelled like feces. ewwwwww!"Replies
[WARNING!] 01/01/2014: Binxy from Brisbane Australia replies: "In response to Marisa from San Jose, USA:
Never, EVER use pool grade DE. It has been specially treated and its crystalized structure is dangerous to your health (and your pets). ONLY use food grade DE with living creatures."
Pets - Ear Mites
[YEA] 01/21/2009: Lynn from Gulfport, Florida: "My male cat had scratched his ears so much that the ear developed a huge bubble and separated the ear skin/flesh. I had to take him to the vet for expensive treatment and surgery. It was due to ear mites. The ear is now permanently disfigured and ruined his appearance. I used diatomacious earth (food grade) mixed with a little water for transport, and and eye dropper, and put it in his ears when the mites came back. The water will evaporate and leaves the DE in the ear for ongoing treatment, as it is a powder and coats the inside of the ear a little. You don't need much. He stopped scratching by that night, and he hasn't had a problem since. That was a couple of years ago. My other cats are having problems though, and I am going to use it on them. I HATE ear mites and see how my cats can suffer with them. You can buy it (food grade) online or sometimes in a plant nursery (they use it to kill insects). It pays to remember that there may be an infection in the ears as well, and without a proper examination, you can't know. As much as I don't like vets offices, checking for an infection is worth it, especially in severe cases. One of my cats had mites and an infection. Her energy picked up after treatment for the infection, and I felt guilty that maybe she'd had it all along and it was painful. It's important to find a vet you like. Talk to people and get a referral for one you trust. Treatment can utilize both natural and standard treatment when appropriate."
