QUESTION

01/18/2012: Bbisaillon14 from Manteno, Il / U.s. writes: "Hello. I have had 2 cats for a long time. But 1 cat who's about 8-9 years old grew a cyst a little bigger than a grape. It's soft pink and doesn't bother him other than it hangs from his neck/cheek. The vet said they could remove it but it would most likely grow back, so we didn't. I've been "popping" it for a while now and clear liquid comes out. It doesn't seem to bother him other than I'm holding him with a washcloth to his face.

My mother suggested I tie a knot around it so it kills the skin and goes away but I'm afraid of the liquid not having a place to go. He is a loved animal in my home and I would hate to cause him pain. I am also afraid of infection- we havn't had any so far, but I know popping it isn't the best way. Any suggestions?"

12/30/2011: Rosario from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada writes: "My partner and I have a lab/border collie mix female dog (Koya) who is now almost 12 years old. Since she was young her skin had been oily and which led to her developing small cysts outside of her skin. The vet said these were just subaceous gland cysts. About 3 weeks ago, we felt a small cyst near the back of her lower neck which after a few days became large (about the size of a baseball) and it was "jingling". The vet confirmed that this cyst inside the dog's body had burst. Since about 2 weeks now, this cyst has been drained by the vet for 4 times and although the liquid is draining, it is very slow and the vet cannot confirm when this draining is expected to last or whether the cyst will eventually drain. Koya has also been taking antibiotics from the vet to address any possible infection.

Koya's behaviour and level of activities have not changed at all. She is still very active and playful. Most importantly, her appetite is still very good as always and she still looks very eager and excited during her meal time.

We cannot go with any surgery or even opening her on the cyst area given her age and also the exorbitant cost of this procedure.

Is there any natural way you can suggest that we can do to stop the fluid from oozing out of this internal cyst and eventually dry it and reduce its size or possibly totally have this cyst heal and disappear completely?

Any urgent solution will be very appreciated (e.g. , spice like turmeric or oil or any natural medication I can get to give her both externally or internally -- we've read some benefits of turmeric or some oils or teas on this site but we're not sure which ones may be applicable to Koya's condition). Help please! Thank you."

I have a 7 year old pitbull and he had a lump on his right shoulder for quite sometime. I took him to the vet when I started to notice it and they said not to worry it was just a cyst and that if it bothered us or if he keeps scratching it we can have it removed (It was in the perfect spot for him to scratch too) Due to financial issues at the time we chose to leave it for a while. One day I was reading some forums and noticed one that said that if the lump stays hard its ok but if it gets mushy it was time to be concerned. He scratched it so hard one day he broke the skin on it so we decided to take him in to have it removed. He didn't see his usual doc this day so it was kind of relieving to have someone else look at it. She poked it and blood came out. She was concerned. He went into surgery that day and they did a biopsy. Ended up being cancerous and they had to remove a large area of muscle to make sure it was all gone!! Dont wait and don't try to cure at home... Looks are deceiving and even your doctor can be wrong sometimes. Second opinions are ok!"

07/03/2011: Cara from Canyon Lake, California And United States writes: "My 13 year old labrador had a wart on his head that turned into a cyst. I immediately took him to the vet and they said I could have surgery to remove it or we could treat with a pulse technique of antibiotics. I opted for antibiotics however they calmed the area down but did not completely control it. The cyst just opens, seals, and then opens again in a vicious never ending cycle. Typically it is one hole that blood comes out of but now it is 2. So there are 2 weak points in the skin. Most of the hair is gone from that area. The area that it seeps out of becomes an open wound. It is right above his eye. I did the preop bloodwork and two of the 8 liver kidney tests came back with higher levels than they should have been. The doc said we could still do surgery however he didnt pass all tests with flying colors. I am so worried as he has never been put under for anything. Now that I have the info about the tests I worry so much more that if I do put him under something might happen. I dont know what to do."

10/24/2010: Christine from Sacramento, Ca writes: "Our rescue kitty who is probably 6-8yrs old spontaneously developed a large mass on her right cheek yesterday. It literally appeared over the course of a few hours. She's eating fine & it doesn't seem to be hurting her. She's doesn't wince away when I try to touch her face. The mass feels a little hard but not like a rock. She's not acting out of the ordinary at all, no unusual behavior or symptoms. She is primarily an outdoor cat (just showed up malnourished on our front door one day). Can anyone help? not sure what to do. Trying to avoid traditional approach with meds & invasive procedures at the vet. Seems most times I rush an animal to the vet for something that seemed urgent, turns out I could have done the first aid at home. Thank you!"

[QUESTION]  11/12/2009: Diana from Tirana, Albania writes: "Hi,

I am looking for a solution to my cat's problem. She is 5.5 months old. Ten days ago I discovered a lump in her belly. It was not too hard and did not seem to cause her any pain when touched. It must have grown too fast because I check her regularly. I took her to the vet and he found two or three more lumps (cysts) about the size of a hazelnut close to her mammary glands. The vet said that it is very unusual for a cat at this age to develop cysts and that it is better not to intervene until she reaches puberty.

According to the vet, the lumps are caused by hormonal overproduction. He assured me that most likely the cysts will shrink when she matures or after she is sterilized but I noticed that within 3-4 days they almost doubled in size. She eats well, plays a lot and is very very active. I am going to send her to the vet again but I do not know what options there are since the cat is so young. I am looking for an alternative method and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with a young cat. Would you recommend this kind of treatment in this case? Thank you very much and I wish you and your pets the best of luck!"

[QUESTION]  04/04/2011: Lainieg from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada writes: "My plott hound Mielan has a large cyst on her head. It is soft and like a large grape. I have been giving her this turmeric capsule, opening a capsule and giving her one morning, noon and supper mixed with her food. All 3 together measures about a tsp., I would say, so don't think I'm giving her too much. Too much food yes (as she's pooping way too much), but not the turmeric.

It's only been since March 17th, but I stopped because she was sick one day and vomitted yellow substance and didn't eat all day. Of course cyst is still there, with no change. I am afraid to hurt her system with this powder. Did anyone else's pupper get sick?

Also, guess I should be patient, someone said it could take about 2 months? Is that correct? I cannot afford a vet bill or bills for this as I have 2 other pups and they are all due for their heartguard, and check up etc.

Did anyone happen to get this turmeric on their clothes by any chance? I did, not sure how, but my clothes are stained, how to get this out of our clothes. Anyone know?

Thanks - Elaine"

[YEA]  03/24/2011: Elaine from Gum Spring, Va writes: "I read about the turmeric remedy for cysts in dogs & cats. Our cat has had one for years that was never any problem and the size of a pea. Last year the vet drained it and it was gone for awhile. I noticed it was back the size of a pea then a little over a week ago the size of a grape. It was located on his neck so I was concerned. I tried the turmeric (just a dash mixed in the food) and as of yesterday the cyst was completely gone. We are so happy to have saved a trip to vet by using this."

I get it in bulk from the local Indian store - it tastes really bad though! My cat just does not take it! She tolerates cod liver oil with her raw meat diet. She had a large 2 pound abdominal cyst removed 16 months ago only to return 4 months ago in the same area operated - this time there is no infection and it is benign - I know that the reason for the cyst was all the dry biscuits she had - no raw meat for 3 months straight - she is now on raw kangaroo, cod liver oil and wheat grass powder morning and night - she is much happier however the fatty cyst has not increased but has just become softer and she is not hissing when I massage her - she is 9 years old. The cyst is about 3 inches by 2 inches with a height of 1 inch - has anyone had success in reducing cysts? Thanks for this site ;-)"

03/03/2011: Ashley from Laotto, Indiana writes: "Hello, I have a 16 year old cat. He developed a small cyst on his paw, about the size of a pea. It is growing, although slowly. It doesn't bother him, but I know the more it grows - it will. I am unable to take him in to a vet, because of his age/weight. He also gets extremely stressed out, has panic attacks. He hasn't been seen in years for this reason, & I fear at this point in his life it's not worth the risk. There are no vets in my area or surrounding that will do a home visit. Also, I simply cannot put him through a surgical procedure at his age. I feel helpless. So, I am searching for a safe home remedy to try. I've read about Turmeric & its use for pet cysts. Is this safe? Should I make a paste & apply it to the cyst, or sprinkle powder on his food? Are there side effects? Once the cyst shrinks or begins to drain, is there possibility of infection? Thank you for any advice, it's much appreciated!"

[YEA]  03/16/2010: Doug from Bellflower, Ca writes: "I rescued a 2 year old (roughly) Boxer on September 26th, 2009 and named him Clyde. He is the absolute best dog I have ever owned! Shortly after I adopted him, though, I noticed that he had a lump on his face beside his right eye. It took me a few weeks to spot it because of his wrinkly boxer face. It didn't seem to bother him at all so I decided to keep an eye on it for a while. About a month ago I took him to the vet to have the lump looked at because it seemed to be growing (about the size of a grape at its largest).

They performed a "fine needle aspirate" to determine what it consisted of and they concluded that it was a "probable keratin filled subaceous cyst". (The test alone cost $250!) They said that it would eventually have to be surgically removed. I was pretty freaked out because I am getting married in May and cannot afford to fork out the amount of money that would be required to operate on him.

I was looking into the problem online and stumbled onto Earth Clinic where I read about using Turmeric as a cyst remedy. I ran to the market and picked up a jar of Turmeric powder and began sprinkling 1/2 tsp of it into his food morning and night (totaling 1 tsp per day). His first dose was on Wed (3/10/10).

On the following Mon night (3/15/10 (tonight)) I came home and found the cyst draining a brownish, reddish goo! Once I began treating him with the Turmeric the lump seemed to grow. I was beginning to wonder if it was going to work but I think it only appeared larger because it was bringing the material to the surface to drain.

The lump is not gone just yet but it is rapidly venting its contents and I am sure it will be gone in no time! (I'll post another comment if I'm wrong).

I am ecstatic with the knowledge that I don't have to spend a gazillion dollars and put by my buddy through surgery!

I don't usually write reviews and I am super skeptical when it comes to alternative medicine but this is no joke! EC saved me big money so I figured it was worth sitting down for a few minutes to share my experience. Turmeric rules and I plan to go tell it on the mountains!

Thanks EC!"

When the vet checked her he said they were fatty tumors.

Should I stay the course, I have read that sometimes they get bigger and then heal. Any help for my best FRIEND is greatly appreciated. Money is really tight for me but I want to make sure she is o.k.

Thanks so much, Regina"

[YEA]  08/04/2009: Eva from Nj, Usa writes: "Turmeric for cyst on my dog

I found a growth on my 7 year old golden retriever's neck. His name is Zeus, great dog. I couldn't afford a vet and didn't know if it was cancerous or not, it was growing and then it seemed to be getting irritated, even some blood or crust on it, it looked scary and I was upset. It got to be about 3/4 of an inch. So I prayed for a cure and was researching natural cures because quite frankly I believe nature heals and truly cures better than modern medicine much of the time anyway, not that I'm anti-doctor because I'm not, just wish they'd get themselves familiarized with what foods/herbs can help too, instead of only pills and surgeries. SO ... I've been giving him about a teaspoon sprinkled in with his food twice a day, morning and night. I mix with a little water so it mixes in well, sortof an indian dog food gravy if you will LOL. The good thing is, he seems to LIKE it! So I don't have to force feed it to him. I've been doing this since 07/27/09, it's now 08/04/09, so about a week, and mind you the first day or two I gave him less to be cautious in case it didn't agree with him. He has had no issues, and this dog has a sensitive stomach so that's good. Well, last night I check and it's shrunk to less than half the size, now it's slightly smaller than the size of a pea and no crusts, it is smooth and no longer looks swelling and dangerous and scary. It looks like it's just shrinking and healing away. This in a week! I'm continuing until it's gone and then will continue using a smaller quantity, maybe one half teaspoon twice a day as a preventative measure. This is just awesome. I got my turmeric in a big bag from an Indian spice store by the way, it's pretty fresh but I'll bet any will do.

It's good for people too! I think I'll start taking a little every day, too! Good luck! And I'll try to post later with follow up to let you know our results."

[YEA]  01/05/2009: Chloe from Seattle, WA, USA writes: "Turmeric Remedy for Cysts. Mid December 08, my 7-year old Golden Retriever was limping and her left paw was in pain. I could feel a hard lump next to one of the pads. Took her to the vet. They aspirated it and sent it to lab. (cost $180). Advised me that it was a sebaceous cyst and would have to be removed to the tune of $600 (that's including the discount of vet ins.) They said it WOULD NOT go away and it WOULD NOT burst. It would have to be cut off. It was "hard" now as it was old and not filled with fluid. I was desperate to find a natural cure, as I didn't want to spend $600!!. I've been on this website before (LOVE IT!!) and stumbled upon Lisa from Ohio's turmeric remedy. I started in immediately and now, 2 weeks later, the cyst is HALF its former size and is not painful at all. It was rock-hard before and now feels more normal. 2 weeks ago I couldn't even touch it! THIS REMEDY IS A MIRACLE. Sadie also has a soft cyst the size of a nickle on her chest and that has gotten smaller as well! I just used regular turmeric from the grocery store. 1 teaspoon per day. I have done extensive research on turmeric and have found it to be a miracle herb. I am now taking it myself 2x per day in tablet form. THANK-YOU EARTH CLINIC!!!!!! xoxo Chloe"

well, i immediately started giving her high doses of tumeric in ensure or oatmeal. the lump has not gotten any bigger and it has been several weeks. it actually appears to be getting smaller. this is a godsend. she is an older rat (1 1/2 years) and has always been frail and i don't think she would be a good candidate for surgery. i would suggest that anyone with pet rats that get lumps give them tumeric. actually, i plan to give all my rats tumeric from now on because it also helps with abcesses, and it said to keep lumps from forming. i have told all my rat friends about your site!

[YEA]  10/03/2008: Deirdre from Atlanta, GA writes: "Just wanted to report that I am having great results on my 14+ year old german shephard mix who has arthritis (especially in the hips). I think that one of the most helpful and important things I'm doing is exercising him without fail every day. I take him on walks each day, usually about 3.5 miles total. Considering his age, he's in remarkably good shape and, except on steep hills, keeps up with our other 2 young dogs. We used to walk by a neighbor's golden retriever who was let outside in the front yard several times a day to do her thing. She hobbled around in obvious pain, barely able to walk. I never once saw the owners taking their sweet dog out for a walk. She was only about 10 years old when they put her to sleep. Just my opinion, but I think early deaths happen with some frequency to yard-only dogs. Exercise keeps those joints lubricated!

Supplements: I also recently started adding turmeric, msm and glucosamine to Max's food. Dosages: 1/4 teaspoon of powdered turmeric in his food in the morning, diluted with chicken broth. At night I crush a 1000 mg tablet of MSM and give him half of it (500 mg), plus a full capsule of glucosamine blend from Trader Joe's (glucosamine sulfate 750mg and glucosamine HCI 750 mg). My vet mentioned that she likes the combo of MSM and glucosamine for dogs with arthritis, which is why I started him on that a few weeks ago. The turmeric has helped heal up a benign cyst that had burst through the skin on his front paw. Very glad one of EC's readers reported a cure for dog cysts recently -- thanks! At any rate, Max seems to be doing better on the supplements -- walking faster, wrestling with the other dogs, less confusion at night when the lights go off. Yea, yea, yea."

It took about 2 months, but the lump is now completely gone!!

I would have started Max on turmeric ages ago had I known how helpful it is with benign cysts (he has them all over his body). Many thanks again to Lisa for telling us about this great remedy."

[YEA]  09/19/2008: Lisa from Columbus, Ohio writes: "Turmeric for Canine Cyst

My 4 year old sheltie had a cyst about the size of a pebble on her head. The vet had aspirated it to check for cancer, which was negative and said at some point we will need to remove it surgically, as it had grown at least twice its size in a year. A friend had sent me the earth clinic web site a while ago, so I decided to look up cyst. Although I didn't see it listed for pets, I did see that people were using turmeric to remove cysts by digesting it, so off to the grocery I went. I bought the store brand turmeric and sprinkled it in her food 5 days a week for 3 weeks. I mixed it with warm water and a little bit of canned food to hide any taste she might not like. I didn't measure, I just sprinkled it in, I'd guess 1 tsp a day with her food. After about a week, I noticed the cyst was in fact shrinking. After 3 weeks it was completely gone and has been gone for a month now. I read that tumeric contains curcumin, which is probably what made it work. Info on curcumin can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curcumin. Thanks so much Earth Clinic!"

EC: Thanks, Lisa. New page for cysts has now been created in the pets section!

When she had her cyst which grew to be about the size of an eraser on a pencil, I did this every day until 1 month after it was gone. She now gets the same amount of turmeric 3 or 4 times a week as 'maintenance'. Almost a year later, she's cyst free."

Have been giving her a dose of 500mg per day for 45 days with no ill effects. The large cyst near the eye changed in color from a clear-whitish to pinkish color and has shrunk to the point where it is just about flat. It looks like it is healing from the inside because it hasn't opened or ruptured. This has really works wonders for our little girl."

They told me that it was a cyst that had burst and it was common in her breed. They also said that when she gets more, they would have to be surgically removed. This is my best friend and I love her so much! I DO NOT want to put her under the knife. PLEASE, IF THERE IS ANY OTHER WAY PLEASE TELL ME! "

I have read many of the posts on this subject, and would like to add another remedy that will shrink and help subaceous cysts disappear. CASTOR OIL!! If you apply it, do so topically, not internally. My precious GSD is prone to these cysts, and I have gotten rid of every one of them by applying castor oil once or twice a day. It's best if low heat can be applied, but not necessary. It does take time, but certainly saves a vet visit. Also, any vet that tells you a subaceous, benign cyst must be surgically removed for $600 is being dishonest. I am going to start my baby on turmeric as well, and hope it will help alleviate any future cysts and help her joints. Thanks for listening."
