HOW TO RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF A STROKE
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. However, doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S.T.R.
S'' Ask the individual to SMILE.
T Ask the person to TALK. Ask the person to speak a simple sentence coherently. ("It is rainy today.")
R Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
You can also ask the person to stick out his tongue... if the tongue is crooked, (if it goes to one side or the other) it is also an indication of a stroke.
If the person has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

THanks for your time."Replies
12/02/2009: Kirsten from New York, Ny replies: "i'm not sure if you can "overdose" on acv; however i've heard of people having side effects of taking too much. there is a section in this website that outlines some of the side effects."

[YEA] 04/04/2007: Harold from Atlanta, USA: "I had two (2)strokes within the pass seven years. I use to take herbs but life happens and I forgot. when I start taking ACV my blood pressure has been averaging 190/185.after I started taking ACV, within three week my blood pressure has been 110/64 for the pass three months. this is without me taking all the meds the doctor had given me. I have two blood pressure kit that I use constanly, so I won't have any surprises.
I also had acid reflux , and it was so bad that I couldn't sleep no more than three or more hours at night , setting up.
Thank God for ACV. The meds that I was give, stop acid from being produce in my stomach, which kept the food from digesting which caused constipation. I took ACV. and slept like a log and have been taking it for the past few months. WHAT I TOOK MAY BE MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU BECAUSE EVERYBODY BODY IS DIFFERENT, YOU HAVE TO SEE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU, AND THEN YOU'LL HAVE THE GOOD RESULTS. IT TRULY IS THE BEST THING YET!"Replies
08/24/2012: Patricia from Cove, Arkansas replies: "My husband has had a stroke. The ER took all the tests but after 2 and a half hours, the doctor still had not come in to talk to him and he got upset and left. I gave him some ACV in a glass of water but I don't know how much I should give him to help with the stroke. His only problem is that he has trouble getting his words out. He seems to be a little better this morning. He is 72 years old. Can someone tell me how much ACV in a glass of water I should give him. I can only find the ACV that they sell at the grocery store which is the diluted kind. Is this ok or should I get the undistlled kind? Thank you"
08/24/2012: Had from White River Jct, Vermont replies: "You may want to look at cayenne pepper in warm water (not a whole lot either). It clears blockages and balances blood pressure. Look up ceyanne and heart or stroke on line, you'll find some really interesting and informative sites. And it works FAST for that stuff ( as well as blood loss, hemeraging etc... I was WOWed )"
[YEA] 02/12/2007: Fran from Rocky Face, GA: "Please tell those who are asking that I had read where, if ACV was taken up to 36 hours straight right after a stroke, that all systoms would be reversed. Also, you might like to know that when a person is getting a transplant they should be on kelp as this helps the body to receive and accept the body part. If not on kelp most likely the body will reject as a foreign part. God Bless You"
[YEA] 01/02/2007: Bill from Dayton, OH: "I'm one of those people who believe that drug companies are not out to cure diseaes but to come up with drugs to ONLY control them so we're stuck buying them for a liifetime. After my doctor had me wear a blood pressure device for 24 hours I was told my blood pressure was high and he put me on (Micardis?). 2 months later on Superbowl Sunday, Feb. 5-06 I had a stroke. I wish I could give you numbers and readings but I don't have them. 14 years ago I was told I was a diabetic and needed to control it with diet which I never really did. Anyway after the stroke my doctor had me go get my blood tested for almost everything sugarwise. He told me of bad numbers on most everything. Then a friend told me about Apple Cider Vinegar and although it's not the tastiest thing I started taking a drink of Heinz ACV every morning. That started about 6 months ago. On my last Dr. appointment going over another blood sugar test he wanted to know how much I was exercising because my blood pressure was good and so were all my sugar numbers plus I'm almost under 200 pounds for the first time in ??? I'm at 203 with a high of 232 and haven't changed a thing in my lifestyle. I haven't exercised on a regular basis since giving up softball at the age of 46 four years ago. ACV has made a eliever of me. Now if I could just pour it on my head and regrow my hair."Replies
08/26/2009: Qwert from Awesome, Ma, USA replies: "To Bill from Dayton. Im glad youre better now and hope many more healthy years to come. And to your last sentence...you should try it, you just never know. just dont forget to let us know if it works/

08/07/2008: Earth Clinic : "Book recommendation for those of you interested in brain chemistry and neuroplasticity... It's called: The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge, M.D. It is fantastic!
Review From Publishers Weekly: "... stroke victim to recover the ability to walk although 97% of the nerves from the cerebral cortex to the spine were destroyed. With detailed case studies reminiscent of Oliver Sachs, combined with extensive interviews with lead researchers, Doidge, a research psychiatrist and psychoanalyst at Columbia and the University of Toronto, slowly turns everything we thought we knew about the brain upside down. He is, perhaps, overenthusiastic about the possibilities, believing that this new science can fix every neurological problem, from learning disabilities to blindness. But Doidge writes interestingly and engagingly about some of the least understood marvels of the brain. (Mar. 19)"
Chinese Needle Method
[NAY] 07/02/2008: Penny from Fresno, CA: "I'm not sure if this is legit. This source says it's false. http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/medical/a/needle_stroke.htm"Replies
07/05/2008: Trish from Kansas City, MO replies: "I went to the link provided by Penny, regarding the warning on the Chinese Needle Method for stroke victims. The author was kind of poking fun at the pulling of the ears to fill them with blood. I know nothing about bloodletting, but I do know that everytime I've gone to see my chiropractor, who also happens to do accupuncture and energy healing as well, she always gives my ears a pretty rough 'massage' and pulls down on them pretty hard until they're quite red and hot. I think she said it stimulates the colon, especially good before a colonic, as well as other organs (similar to oil-pulling in relation to the tongue and reflexology in relation to the feet). The author of the article was stating that it sounds more like torture than anything. I will say that it's a little uncomfortable for a minute or so but it definitely helps me to feel more energetic and balanced and as I said before is great before getting a colonic. Sorry, this comment isn't really of any help to the Chinese Needle Method but thought I would comment on that 'warning' link. Maybe someone should try to track down the school where this incident is said to have happened and see if there is any documented proof, or at least someone who can veryify or deny the incident."
EC: Thanks, Trish.
Apparently this "needle method for strokes' email has been passed around the internet since 2003. Here it is on the Snopes website: http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/stroke.asp
06/27/2008: Tan Koon Peng from Singapore: "From a Chinese Professor.
Keep a syringe or needle in your home to do this.
It's amazing and an unconventional way of recovering from stroke, read it through it can help somebody one day. This is amazing. Please keep this very handy. Excellent tips.
Do take a minute to read this. You'll never know, ones life may depend on you. My father was paralyzed and later died from the result of a stroke. I wish I knew about this first aid before.
When stroke strikes, the capillaries in the brain will gradually burst. (Irene Liu) When a stroke occurs, stay calm.
No matter where the victim is, do not move him/her. Because, if moved, the capillaries will burst.
Help the victim to sit up where he/she is to prevent him/her from falling over again and then the blood letting can begin.
If you have in your home an injection syringe that would be the best. Otherwise, a sewing needle or a straight pin will do.
1. Place the needle/pin over fire to sterilize it and then use it to prick the tip of all ......10 fingers.
2. There are no specific acupuncture points, just prick about an mm from the fingernail.
3. Prick till blood comes out.
4. If blood does not start to drip, then squeeze with your fingers.
5. When all 10 digits are bleeding, wait a few minutes then the victim will regain consciousness.
6. If the victim's mouth is crooked, then pull on his ears until they are red.
7. Then prick each earlobe twice until two drops of blood comes from each ear lobe.
After a few minutes the victim should regain consciousness.
Wait till the victim regains his normal state without any abnormal symptoms then take him to the hospital.
Otherwise, if he was taken in the ambulance in a hurry to the hospital, the bumpy trip will cause all the capillaries in his brain to burst.
If he could save his life, barely managing to walk, then it is by the grace of his ancestors.
"I learned about letting blood to save life from Chinese traditional doctor, Ha Bu Ting, who lives in Sun Juke. Furthermore, I had practical experience with it. Therefore, I can say this method is 100% effective. In 1979, I was teaching in Fung Gaap College in Tai Chung.
One afternoon, I was teaching a class when another teacher came running to my classroom and said in panting, 'Ms Liu, come quick, our supervisor has had a stroke!'. I immediately went to the 3rd floor.
When I saw our supervisor, Mr. Chen Fu Tien, his colour was off, his speech was slurred, his mouth was crooked - all the symptoms of a stroke.
I immediately asked one of the practicum students to go to the pharmacy outside the school to buy a syringe, which I used to prick Mr. Chen's 10 fingers tips.
When all 10 fingers were bleeding (each with a pea-sized drop of blood), after a few minutes, Mr. Chen's face regained its colour and his eyes' spirit returned, too.
But his mouth was still crooked. So I pulled on his ears to fill them with blood. When his ears became red, I pricked his right earlobe twice to let out two drops of blood. When both earlobes had two drops of blood each, a miracle happened. Within 3-5 minutes the shape of his mouth returned to normal and his speech became clear.
We let him rest for a while and have a cup of hot tea, then we helped him go down the stairs, drove him to Wei Wah Hospital.
He rested one night and was released the next day to return to school to teach. Everything worked normally. There were no ill after effects.
On the other hand, the usual stroke victim usually suffers Irreparable bursting of the brain capillaries on the way to the hospital.
As a result, these victims never recover." (Irene Liu) Therefore, stroke is the second cause of death. The lucky ones will stay alive but can remain paralyzed for life.
It is such a horrible thing to happen in ones life.
If we can all remember this blood letting method and start the life saving process immediately, in a short time, the victim will be revived and regain 100% normality."
[WARNING!] 06/29/2008: Scott replies: "I would really like to give you some background information on strokes. Briefly, there are two basic types. One is obstruction leading to lack of oxygen to brain nerve tissue like a blood clot blocking flow. The other is physical compression of nerve tissue from any source (tumor, trauma, expanding blood vessel, or leaking blood vessel). Actually each of these has varying manifestations and roughly can be very short lived (transient ischemic attack), of moderate duration (reversible ischemic neurologic disorder), or full blown stroke. Anyway, the bottom line is how long is the nerve tissue compromised? If short time, you will get total recovery. Moderate amount usually the same. But there if a critical period of time passes without cellular assistance, permanent damage occurs. Honestly, accurate diagnosis of the cause is so important to determining exactly what is the best way to save the brain. Minutes count. I can only guess the strokes described in this article were TIAs or RINDs. They do have the potential for quick reverse.....either spontaneously or assisted by this acupuncture technique. But if your loved one has the third type and you delay hospital transfer, you may be sealing their fate for permanent neurological damage. There is so much more to say, but I wanted to give you additional insight in case you are faced with this event in a loved one and don't know what to do..."
EC: Thank you, Scott!

08/21/2011: Ti from Houston, Usa replies: "Hello,
I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather's stroke and suffering. Please look up the internet for 'pranic healing'. You can learn to do it yourself, or find someone to do it for your gandpa. It is highly beneficial for any being. God bless."
08/21/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Nathan - I'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather's stroke. He's on quite a few medications. I did a quick look on Google and it seems that they are for asthma/allergies, COPD, high blood pressure, anxiety/depression, thyroid, and high cholesterol. Perhaps if you print a list of all the side effects these medications have, you might find some that relate to his insomnia. Since a doctor would only prescribe yet more toxic drugs to help the poor man sleep, looking for something natural is by far the best.
There is a magnesium product called Natural Calm (found in health food stores) which is very popular and has been around for quite a while. It also has a high absorption rate (extremely important). This should help him get to sleep (most people are deficient in magnesium). He should start with 1 teaspoon daily and work up until he gets a good night's sleep. The only side effect is loose bowels if he takes too much, but then he can just taper down.
Another thing to do is check out Dr. Mercola's Web site. He wrote many articles on strokes - such as Vitamin B3 helping stroke victims, taking fish oil, etc. Here's a link to a search on stroke information:
He also wrote about getting a good night's sleep - taking melatonin, making sure you sleep in a very dark room, no lights from clocks, radios, TVs, etc.
Here's a link to a search on sleep from Dr. Mercola's site:
The "Doctor Yourself" Web site (doctoryourself. com) also has wonderful suggestions.
You sound like such a caring grandson. I hope your grandfather recovers. If at all possible, try to get him to see a naturopath or a doctor who specializes in orthomolecular medicine. He needs to have something more substantial than all these drugs to help him. A "natural" doctor can assist with many things to help him in his present state and prevent further strokes enzymes, minerals, vitamins, gentle exercise, proper diet and hydration, etc.
Good luck to you and your grandfather. Take care, Bess"
08/22/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "For your grandfather to get to sleep, I would look at transdermal magnesium. If possible make magnesium oil yourself (magnesium chloride flakes mixed with water) and massage into the skin or even bath in it. Even the flakes into a foot bath would get it into the skin.
An excellent website on magnesium is magnesiumforlife.com. Magnesium is necessary for life and we are all deficient in it. It may stop him having another stroke. Lots of info on the website."
08/22/2011: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Nathan, It's quite a cocktail (nowadays common in older folk) your Grandfather is on. One drug for moderate to severe anxiety or panic attacks but is not recommended to be taken by people who have breathing difficulties, even though your Grandfather is on three drugs for breathing difficulties including asthma and copd. One of which has a little known side effect of emphysema. He is also on another for either deppression or anxiety disorder. One med is for hypothyroidism with quite a list of side effects including osteoporosis. He is also on cholesterol and BP lowering meds. At least two have side effects of sleeplessness. Plus there can be interreactions between them.
Maybe someone needs to go with your Grandfather to his Dr and ask why he is on each of them and ask about interactions, plus take a list of any side effects he is having (eg: sleeplessness). You could also take the list to a pharmacist (including any side effects he may be experiencing) and ask their advice about the interactions.
He could try music to help in getting to sleep. Any type that he likes played very softy. I have found it helps. The longer the cd the better. Even better put at least an hour (or more) of his favorites onto a cd. I find that if the cd contains clapping after a song it does not work as well. I read a report of a study done on music therapy some time ago and they had some good results, so decided to try it.
As he has now had two strokes I would also look at cayenne."
08/22/2012: Wendy K from Saskatoon, Sask. Canada replies: "Hi My husband had a massive stroke on July 25, he is 55 years old. He is paralized on his left side but he can talk. They have him on,
Plavix, 75mg; Atorvastain 40gm; Heparin inj. 5000 units; Perindophril 4mg; Acetaminophen 2 tables every 4 hours for his back pain.
I would like to get him on a vitamin, herb or what ever I can to help him recover. His attention span is minimal and I would just like to help him. I have a message therapis come once a week and also i'm wondering about acupuncher if it helps.
He seems to be getting some feeling back but it's painful for him.
Please help. Sincerely, Wendy"
08/22/2012: Reader Of Ec from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "Get him on large amounts of high quality vitamin D. That will help in the healing proccess. Also fish oils, omega 3 6 and 9 will assist normal brain function. Please, these suggestions are most imortant over any herbs.
I am not sure if there may be conttadiction with the medications he is taking and the following herbs so please, reserch is very imprtant.
Research has evaluated Ashwagandha's effects on both brain health and cognitive function. The current understanding is that ashwagndha has rejuvenating antioxidant properties, as well as potential to modulate inflammatory pathways, both supporting healthy brain tissue and promoting mental clarity.
A randomized, controlled study published in the journal PLoS ONElooked at the neurogenetic potential of prolonged curcumin use.
Neurogenesis is the process by which neurons are created in the brain, including in the hippocampus (one of the centers of neural learning).
Researchers led by Z. Zhao out of the Key Laboratory of Brain Functional Genomics, Shanghai, China looked at performance and brain growth in rats after 6 and 12 weeks on a curcumin-fortified diet.
Curcumin enhanced memory (both spatial and non-spatial), as well as hippocampal cell growth compared to rats in the control group."
08/23/2012: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "Yams have something in them that seem to work well for recent stroke victims. If you google yams and strokes you will get some good information."
08/23/2012: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "Wendy, I don't know about what to give him, but I do know that the pain that comes along with a recovery from stroke is a VERY GOOD sign that things are getting better. Do NOT make the mistake of stopping a therapy because of this recovery pain."
08/23/2012: Mt from Ottawa, On Canada replies: "Acupuncture done immediately after the stroke can help. If you delay starting it, the recovery may be poor. You should combine acupuncture with a herbal treatment.
Please read about Mistletoe:
The paralyzed parts of the body can be massaged with Thyme oil and St. John's Wort oil mixed in cold pressed olive oil (90% olive oil). The affected parts should be also massaged with Yarrow and Shepherd's Purse tincture."
08/27/2012: Lubna from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia replies: "Sorry to hear about your husband's condition. I am not a homeopath but I have heard a homeopathic medicine called 'Aconite' can help in a stroke. Please check with a qualified homeo doctor for dosage etc. God bless you and your family."
