NASAL IRRIGATOR

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 11/04/2009: Carole from Stevensville, Mi: "I bought the ____ ____ nasal irrigator years ago and it helped me avoid a sinus surgery on my polyps. The attachment goes right onto your waterpik and the water pulses at the same rate as the non-functioning cilia in your sinuses. A little salt water/baking soda mix and it actually is refreshing. Try it! I still use it when I get flare ups and it gets all the "gunk" out of there!"
Replies[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 02/22/2011: Chad from Anchorage, Alaska replies: "Gosh, I have had terrible nasal polyps for years (20-50) that gradually worsened over my lifetime, and even posted previously in consideration of snorting bloodroot. but accidently, I have found something that REALLY HELPED! this is my condition: 2 big lobes in each nostril, like 2 balloons. left side is totally blocked, and right side is about 90% blocked. I can see them clearly with a flashlight up my nose.
recently, I purchased what is called a "mod", an "e-cigarette" made by a private business (i got a model called the Precise 18, using an 18650 battery). I also purchased "e-liquids" labeled 36mg and 48mg, which are flavored nicotine liquids dissolved in Vegetable Glycerin (VG), Propylene Glycol (PG), and/or PropylEthylene Glycol (guessing, it is PEG-400). anyway, you drip these liquids onto an atomizer (510LR), which you then heat by pressing a button, and then inhaling the vapors. the general term for the activity is "vaporizing" or "vaping". I exhale thru my nose.
after 2 months, looking at things with a flashlight, I would say the left polyp reduced 20% in size, from 100% clogged to about 80%. the right side feels totally clear, but visually, it seems to have been reduced from 90% clogged to about 30%. I can still see it, but there is a very large air opening now. it is more like a lump, instead of a big balloon. reading about Propylene Glycol, I learned that it was a powerful aerosol disinfectant. I don't know if this is part of its effect or not. possibly it is the moisturizing aspects of the compounds. also, I do not know which specific one of the 3 compounds is responsible for the effect (VG, PG, or PEG). but I swear that what I say is true, and the difference is visibly dramatic and noticable and profound."
02/22/2011: Chad from Anchorage, Alaska replies: "I submitted a post in the last 24 hours regarding the use of vaporized PEG in an amazing reduction of nasal polyps. I then did some research, and found this interesting, and wondered if it may be related to my findings:
http://www.caspases.org/showabstract.php?pmid=15374630
Polyethylene glycol inhibits intestinal neoplasia and induces epithelial apoptosis.
Supplementation of Apc(min) mice with 10% PEG 3350 (in drinking water) resulted in a 48% (P<0. 05) reduction in intestinal tumor burden and induced 2-3 fold increase in mucosal apoptosis.
Dietary supplementation of polyethylene glycol (5%) also stimulated colonic mucosal apoptosis 4-5 fold in AOM-treated rats, the regimen that we previously reported to reduce tumor burden by 76% (P<0.05).
In summary, we demonstrate, for the first time, that PEG does protect against Apc(min) mouse tumorigenesis. The correlation between pro-apoptotic actions and chemopreventive efficacy of PEG in these models strongly implicates induction of apoptosis as one of the impending mechanisms of chemoprevention."

REMEDIES NEEDED
05/14/2012: Gsk from London, Uk: "Hi everyone, Has anyone tried or heard of using Pau d'arco for nasal polyps. I came across this somewhere, but not sure if it works. I am desperate for a remedy that works for the long run."

Also I was reading about the use of castor oil for relief from nasal polyps . Any feedback for these would be welcome. thanks."
Replies10/12/2011: Elvira from Barrie, Ontario, Canada replies: "You can buy tea tree oil in any health store. Even in big grocery stores in their natural health departments."
11/16/2011: Teebrron from Toronto, Ontario replies: "Yeah I've tried tea tree cream works well to dry up the nasal cavity. Get it from the health food store at shoppers world, they have oil and cream price range from 10 to 20 dollars."

11/07/2010: Daniels from London, Middlesex, Uk: "Dear all
Could anyone advise me how to tackle the nasal polyps once and for all. I have been a long nasal polyps sufferer and there is no relief so far. Actually I had undergone 4 nasal polyps removal operations but they re-appear. Since last year I had tried some folk medicine such as urynotherapy both externally flushing my nostrils out and drinking in the morning. I do oilpulling therapy every day for 15 min. Drink Organic ACV and finally I have been recently advised by a friend of mine to use Oxygen peroxide 3%. By the way I have changed my eating habits gave up using sugar, sweets, fatty food etc. I have noticed a little improvement however right nostril is still blocked by middle-sized polyp. The last surgery I have had two years ago. I am fed up with over the counter medicine sprays, antybiotics and anti-histaminal drugs. Could anyone advise me how to shrink my polyps in a natural way? I would appreciate all hints and tips. Daniel"

SALINE RINSE
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 02/14/2009: Ron from Emporia, Kansas: "A few years ago I was having difficulty breathing through my right nostril. I used a small flashlight to see what was blocking the nostril. I saw a polyp about the size of a good sized pea. It was positioned less than an inch from the nostril opening. I touched it and it was hard. I was a little frightened by it. At age 55 I had never experienced one of these.
I started researching and found that Sodium can shrink swollen membranes. I then found out about Nasal Irrigation. Nasal Irrigation is where you add a small amount of salt to warm water and let the saltwater pass into one nostril and out the other. All I had available to use was a 16 ounce measuring cup.
I boiled about 4 ounces of water, put it in the 16 ounce measuring cup. Then, I added enough room temperature water so that the water was barely warm. In the summer I need to add about 12 ounces of water to the 4 ounces of boiling water and in the winter I only need to add about 8 ounces of water. I then added a little over 1/4 of a teaspoon of regular table salt. I did the following over the kitchen sink.
I turned my head so that my left ear was facing the floor. Then, I slowly poured the salt water into my right nostril and let it flow out of the left nostril into the kitchen sink. When the measuring cup was empty I stopped.
I would then place my finger on the left side of my nose and close the left nostril and rather forcefully blow excess water out of my right nostril into the sink. Then, I did the same with the other nostril. I then went to the bathroom and used toilet tissue to clean the excess moisture from the nostrils.
I did this every evening. After a few days I looked into the nostril again with the small flashlight and the polyp was gone. I was surprised and delighted.
I have continued to do this nasal cleansing almost every day since. I haven't had a nasal polyp since that first one. I'm now 64 years old. I also noticed it helped keep my sinuses clear most of the time = better breathing.
I later got what is called a Neti Pot, which a a little pot designed for the purpose of doing a nasal irrigation. The cheap plastic ones work for me. Most health food stores have them. I noticed over time that the first couple of hours after doing a nasal irrigation, my nostrils tend to be a little dry. After a couple hours they moisten back up. That's why I do the nasal cleanse at least 2 hours before going to bed. This allows the nostrils time to moisten before bed = better breathing.
A couple details:
1. I found it better to stop the cleanse just before the cup was empty. I pinch my nose so as to retain some of the saltwater in the sinuses. Then, I keep the nose pinched and bend down with the top of my head pointing towards the floor to the count of 20. Then, I keep the nostrils pinched and stand up straight and tilt my head back (when the head is tiled back you can stop pinching the nose and the water will not drain out). I would keep that position to the count of 20. Then I would blow out the excess water. This seems to allow the saltwater to get deeper into the sinus cavity.
2. If, after the first cleanse, my sinus cavity still feels a little stuffy, I'll do a second nasal irrigation (I don't have to do this very often). With practice I became more aware of when my sinus cavities were clear or not.
3. One day I forgot to put the salt into the warm water. When I started the cleanse my nostrils felt really irritated and sore. I stopped and added the salt. When I continued with the nasal cleanse the saltwater was soothing. This is how I discovered how salt is soothing to irritated skin and how water alone can be irritating to sensitive tissue.
Ron"
12/23/2009: Julie from Santa Monica, Ca replies: "In response to Ron: thank you so much for the detailed story. Esp your tips, such as to move head in diff directions, ensuring the entire nasal cavity is rinsed.I have had the same nasal problems, and have been irrigating for months now...I get some relief but wow, does my nose get dry and itchy!! Not to be gross, but well, there's hard matter in there (ahem, very hard boogers) afterward and I just have to remove it...or else I can't breathe well. So, that probably infects it even more, and on & on the infection cycle goes
. Does anyone know of a nice, repairing moisturizer I can put IN my nostrils? Thx. I so adore EarthClinic and all you ppl who post!"
12/24/2009: Shaun from York, England replies: "I have found that if you add to the sea salt a level tea spoon of sodium bicarb, a half tea spoon of sodium carbonate (washing soda) and a dash of borax it is much, much more effective. Bliss in fact!"
12/24/2009: Bessie from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Julie - I use a saline rinse in a neti pot (just a baking soda and kosher salt mixture) and found that, although it helped my sinus problems, it really dried out my nose. I've started adding a couple of drops of food-grade glycerin (found in the health food stores) to the neti pot. It really helped. Then, throughout the day, I just put a tiny amount of coconut oil in each nostril to keep it moist (the air in Calgary is extremely dry). It's made a world of difference. Good luck!"

SYMPTOMS
06/02/2009: Sumiyeh from Rockville, MD: "I have been diagnosed by an allergist/ENT with nasal polyps but my symptoms are a bit different from those declared by the rest of you. I don't have a cure or remedy to offer, but thought that my unusual but definitely related symptoms might shed some light for others.
I don't suffer from the typical stuffiness and loss of smell, nor from drippiness and excessive tissue use. In fact, I seem to have almost no "nose action" going on at all (other than sneezing, which to be perfectly honest is not bothersome for me usually), until one day suddenly, I get an onslaught of a terrific sinus headache accompanied with debilitating nausea that can only be relieved with finally vomitting. I have been told since my youth (age 10 or so) that I have post-nasal drip (my only complaint then was terrible bad breath). I believe that the polyp causes or contributes greatly to the post-nasal drip and a build-up of mucous in my stomach which is the source of the great nausea. Another reason to instruct your children NOT to snork down the drainage instead of blowing their noses; that stuff builds up down there and the only relief is for it to come back UP!
Anyway, my question for the rest of you cure-seekers and diagnosticians is: does it seem plausible that this is not actually sinus or allergy based, but more of a migraine situation? I have undergone allergy blood tests and the results were very inconclusive. I suffer from this sinus-headache/nausea syndrome in all seasons of a 4-season region. It does seem to be worsened by consumption of frozen dairy (especially at night) and by having damp hair (i.e. not blow-drying my hair immediately after showering).
I appreciate any input!
Sumiyeh in Maryland"
06/03/2009: T from Maryland, USA replies: "My son had the bad breath and on occasion coughing to the point of vomiting, which like yours came up with mucous in it. We went through the mill for several years with docs insisting he had seasonal allergies, asthma, etc. A nuumber of rounds of antibiotics were also given for sinus infection flare-ups due to all this. Like you, he generally didn't have dripping or stuffiness or any such symptoms you would think he "should" have by their (mis)diagnoses. When I stopped giving him milk, he stopped having problems.
He didn't have the headache problems you do, but I think it would be worthwhile to try stopping all dairy for a few weeks and see if that changes things for you. During that period, taking some ACV as instructed elsewhere on this site may be good to do just for general purposes. Something else that you might consider - my son recently had several slices of pizza with extra cheese (American cheese is no problem for him, but pizza cheeses are). Within a day, that telltale swampy smell began on his breath. I have a bottle of Atomidine here (it's a type of iodine, available at Amazon). I put a tiny smidge of a drop in juice and gave it to him, and I swear that 2 sips was all it took - the bad breath was instantly GONE and didn't come back! We were both floored. I believe the Atomidine knocked out whatever was brewing there from a dairy reaction. As in all things, you should always research for yourself before trying. Just a tip for something that you might find useful. Best of luck, and please do update us!"
03/25/2012: Judy from St.charles, Mo Usa replies: "I have been reading on here about removing dairy and wheat to help with allergy problems, my question is, can I try coconut milk or almond milk instead of regular milk ?? Have cut way back on the dairy, also, what about breads to eat instead of regular bread (the old white stuff or whole wheat bread). Hoping to start working on this seriouly very soon, will take all info. thanks."

VEGAN DIET, WATER FASTING
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 10/14/2009: Laura Carrington from Victoria, Aus: "Hi y'all. i just wanted to share my experiences with nasal polyp cures which were found from a variety of sources, over a number of years. like all of us sufferers here, i have tried EVERY SINGLE suggested method of curing this ailment ever known to man
- Visited 4 different doctors for 2nd opinions, saw 3 specialists. underwent 4 different cat scans/xrays etc. spent almost $1000 on total medical expenses.
- NASAL IRRIGATION with a variety of salts and herbal/medical infuses
- NASAL SPRAYS of the cortisteroid, over the counter and prescription manner(rhinocort, etc)
- ATOPICAL CREAMS - cortisteriods of many strengths, in prescriptions. applied onto inner nasal walls
- APPLYING/swabbing chemicals eg h202 in powder and liquid form, of different strengths
- ANTIBIOTICS - 3 types, for a few months each
- ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PILLS/TABLETS
- HAYFEVER/ALLERGY tablets x 10 types
- VITAMINS - C, B complex, A, garlic oil, horseradish, zinc, omega3, fish oil,
- DRINKING LITRES upon litres of clear water ever day until the point of feeling unwell
- HOMEOPATHIC remedies
- PRESSURE POINT/ACCUPUNCTURE REMEDIES
- EXTENSIVE HOME RENOVATION to replace all dust-mite sensitive areas, carpets to tiles/wood flooring, curtains replaced, bedding, EVERYTHING
- installing better heating/cooling systems
- IONIZERS to collect dust
- ETC ETC
BUT ALL TO NO AVAIL. well, they work initially, for perhaps a short period of time, but then relapse back to original, intoleratable state
but what i would like to share with you all, is my most recent attempt with WATER FASTING/VEGAN DIET
during my years of researching for a cure, the term 'fasting' did pop up alot, but i never paid attention to it, as it seemed difficult and too intensive to attempt and sustain as a part of my lifestyle
but after exhausting all other alternatives out there, i ultimately resorted to this method
yes it is incredible difficult to cut out all foods, and only consume VEGETABLES and FRUITS, and WATER (teas are allowed), and you do feel TIRED and lethargic, and dizzy most of the time during the intial phase, but after 1.5- 2 weeks, you begin to see GREAT RESULTS
I stopped my other remedies during this time period, and stuck to the FAST strictly
now it has been 3 weeks, and to my delight, the size of my POLYPS shrank immensely. the doctors were equally surprised at what a simple, non-evasive, safe, non-medical, natural, process of fasting could avail to. BREATHING is incredibly easier, EVERYTHING is looking up and up. it is very liberating!
on a side note, you LOSE WEIGHT in the process. which is always good.
So i urge you all to give this a shot. dont waste any more money in useless medicines and whatnot.
hope you all found this helpful! i was really excited about my discovery and really wanted you all to be made privy to the benefits of fasting! CHEERS! and bless you all!"
12/31/2009: Zoe from San Diego, Ca replies: "Hi Laura,
Thanks for your post!
(I am a sinus sufferer also, with a polyp in the right nostril)
Your comments and suggestions, complete dietary changes, make sense! Every time I go on a fast, I feel significant relief in my sinuses (not to mention overall health). But no sooner I begin eating than I start to feel the congestion all over again. Other times when I eat light and restrict myself to wholesome and light diet (and avoiding diary, wheat, pasta, etc.) I feel OK too. Which leads me to believe there is a digestion and food assimilation (or lack thereof) component to sinus conditions. That is, the type and amount of food matter.
I think the trick might be in implementing the long term lifestyle changes - which most us may not have the courage to try. The obvious and discouraging part is that when we experience adverse results initially it is possible to scrap the whole idea.
Laura, in any case, I appreciate it if you could list some of the typical vegan diet you follow? How often do you water fast and when do you consume vegetables and fruits? I imagine one would intake water all the time. (A typical recipe would be nice to have.)
Thank you.
Zoe "
02/18/2010: K.k from Sydney, Aus replies: "Like many other posters here, i think it may be related to wheat/yeast/dairy allergies that you may not be aware of. eradicating certain allergy-inducing foods from our diets would definitely help the polyp shrink, but ive been tested as having only dust mite allergies, so im not entirely sure why i feel better when im only eating pure, natural foods. i hope someone can provide some better insight."
03/21/2010: Tom from Los Angeles, Usa replies: "I am trying to deal with my monster extruding nasal polyps with anti-inflamatory compounds like turmeric, mega-vitamins, horseradish, Chinese herbs and green tea. So far not much luck. I am just glad to know that my problems are indeed polyps; after living in a moldy house 20 years ago my sinuses have been blocked ever since; now polyps protrude from my nose but at least I know what the deal is.Acupuncture helped a bit, but they did not know about polyps as such, and the herbal pills they gave me have little effect; covered in red dye and sugar, I soak that stuff off before I take the pills.
A juice fast seems to be the next logical step in allowing the body to break down this excess tissue."
03/24/2010: Sam from Kl, Malaysia replies: "As a fellow nasal polyp sufferer, i really feel for all the people who post here. i wanted to add my 2 cents, and i really must to say, the most effective cure is the one that most people have been advocating. by no means is it easy, but the root cause of the condition is wheat and dairy. its been medically proven that NOT CONSUMING these products will give you instant and long-lived relief. but the problem is its generally impossible to avoid these types of foods, and so most people continue to suffer from polyps, not knowing the reasons why. following this logic, i've been consuming as little wheat and dairy as possible for the past 2 years, and drinking as much water as possible. whilst my polyps are not gone, they have shrunk drastically and continued to remain that way, and most days i dont even feel them in my nasal passage. so please take this into consideration, for your healths sake. good luck!"
06/22/2010: Cvik from Baltimore, Md, Usa replies: "This time homeopthy didn't work for me. Everytime something different seems to work though my first aim is to control sinus. Did that with Sudafed non drying medicine. Then drank Job's tears powder mixed in hot water. One tablespoon per day. After 2 days polyp has shrunk considerably. Job's Tears is popular with Japanese and in Asian society. It's made with 'Chinese pearl barley'.
I see mention about diet. In Indian shops you will find Harad powder that taken after food prevents formation of sinus."
08/19/2011: Nosey from Las Vegas, Nv replies: "Has Job's tears continued to keep your polyps shrunken?"
[YEA] 09/01/2011: Dave from Sunman, Indiana replies: "My 5 yr battle with nasal polyps also ended with the elimination of grain from my diet. I also eliminated seed oils & replaced them with animal fats. Adding 1000 mg of ascorbic acid to 8oz of hypertonic saline in the form of nasal irrigation seems to help.Dave"

VITAMIN C, GRAPE SEED EXTRACT
Ratings:

[YEA] 06/24/2010: Jennifer from Rochester, Ny: "-PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH...WE ALL HAVE DIFFERING MEDICAL NEEDS AND BIOLOGICAL CONDITIONS...THIS IS JUST WHAT SEEMED TO HAVE WORKED FOR ME, BUT I KNOW MY BODY PRETTY WELL COMPARED TO THE AVERAGE JOE.
-PLEASE RESEARCH GRAPE SEED EXTRACT BEFORE TAKING...HAS BLOOD THINNING QUALITIES and OTHER THINGS ONE SHOULD BE AWARE OF.
High Doses Vitamin C and Grape Seed Extract:
I have had a sinus polyp for 12 years and have tried so many herbs and such to get rid of it to no avail. This past year I read an article (link is at bottom) on taking high doses of Vitamin C when ill.
Last week, right before my summer vacation I developed a serious sinus infection due to allergies. Based on the article I had read I decided to take high doses of Vitamin C along with Grape Seed Extract which is supposed to be 20X more potent than Vitamin C.
I took about 2000 MG (milligrams, NOT grams) of Vitamin C about every 3-4 hrs.for 3-4 days. In addition I took 100 MG of Grape Seed Extract 2x/ day--all with plenty of water. I was also taking Vitamin D and garlic but not in large quantities.
On day 4, I sniffed my nose and "something" moved to the back of my throat. I do not want to be rude but...I moved it into a tissue to examine it because it felt so strange and large. It wasn't your typical nasal mucous that comes with an infection. It looked like a large wad of gum and had the same rubbery texture but was dark red in color. I was pretty sure it was my nasal polyp and upon looking into my nostril with a light I could not see it anywhere. I have looked for several days in disbelief that it could actually be gone but it has yet to return a week later. I think it just finally "dried up" up and detached. I am breathing freer than I have for years and cannot believe what has seemingly transpired.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING LINK FOR INFORMATION ON TAKING HIGH DOSES OF VITAMIN C. I have found it to be very helpful for my own health concerns.
http://www.orthomed.com/titrate.htm
I hope this gives those suffering with nasal polyps a possible route to pursue for their relief. I encourage you to read a great deal and educate yourself on all risks and side-effects in regards to your own body and it's needs.
Jennifer"
09/29/2010: Tom from Los Angeles, California, Usa replies: "These nasal polyps are indeed pernicious. Horseradish did nothing for me. The polyps seemed to really make themselves known when I had a filled wisdom tooth break in two a couple of years ago. The dentist wanted to pull it, but I thought I just had a sinus infection with total blockage, so we agreed to wait til I had it cleared up before pulling the tooth. If my polyps clear up after I have the decayed tooth pulled, I will think that they are related. For now I am on steroid spray, which does shrink them a lot, high vitamin C, and trying to avoid dust and food toxins. Has anyone seen a relationship between a bad tooth and polyps? There must be a connection!"
10/05/2010: Steve from Renton, Wa, 98056 replies: "Hi Tom,
I have read that the roots of the upper teeth can extend into the lower sinus cavities below the eyes. If the roots are infected then the sinus can become infected. I notice my chronic sinus problem flares up when I fall asleep without brushing my teeth. I'm not sure if this is because of allergy to the dental plaque or because bacteria migrate up through the dentin tubules into the sinus. Hope this helps, Steve
About me: I have had chronic sinusitis for around 10 years. I saw a surgeon today and my CT scan shows quite a bit of sinus polyp blockage. I am strongly considering surgery after trying many natural options, but am still looking for a natural preventative. The essiac tea seems like an interesting option, which I have not tried yet."

WHOLISTIC
02/03/2011: Gylez from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.: "Trying to heal the polyps? Well, I used to suffer intensely from it until I realized that the major cause of its growth is somewhat related to your understanding of how you use your body, mind, and soul. What you have to do? Balance your mind/body/spirit, and you will surely rid yourself of, not just the polyps, but also any other impending or existing diseases in your body you might be oblivious to. The mind: your thoughts, worries, anxiety, and beliefs. The body: the food and drink you consume, exercise, and relaxation. The spirit: Also the soul, divine, or God- meditation, prayers, the level of your awareness and your consciousness."
