Apple Cider Vinegar, Cayenne
[YEA] 05/15/2009: Put some good ideas together from Toronto, Ontario: "Sinus Congestion with Sore Throat:
I've always taken a dash of Cayenne Pepper (I'd say a teaspoon, but it's really as much as you can comfortably handle as an individual) with 2 tablespoons of Lemon Juice and 2 tablespoons of Honey in a mug of boiling water for a sore throat.
Great relief and tastes great too.
After reading other posts and some experimentation I am now changing my recipe to..
1 dash Cayenne Pepper
2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
2 tablespoons Honey
1 Mug boiling water
Same great taste, but better sinus relief as well as sore throat."
[YEA] 10/23/2009: Rae from Norwich, Norfolk, England, Uk replies: "ACV and cayenne pepper in hot water cured sinus congestion.
This simple remedy really works! My head was stuffed up for a few days and getting worse. Yesterday afternoon I took 1 tablespoon raw ACV in a mug of hot water with a big pinch of cayenne pepper. My nasal passages started to clear even as I was sipping and within an hour my head felt a lot clearer. I did this 3 times altogether, taking the last mug before bed and woke up this morning with a clear head!
I've used this remedy on two occasions now and with almost immediate results. I think it helps if you breathe in the vapours also.
Thankyou, Earthclinic! Love this site."
[YEA] 03/01/2011: Nicole from Tempe, Az replies: "Hello there! I want to thank you for this recipe my nose is instantly draining. My eyes were watering. Sweating a little bit. I added a little cinnamon to I guess cut the heat:). Thanks much. Idk if the cinnamon helped but for some reason I always have to modify things. LOL Thanks again!"
[YEA] 12/27/2007: Bob from Somerset, Ohio: "After suffering from sinus congestion and the associated pressure on the head behind the eyes for about three days I decided to google and came to this site. First was a quarter cup of ACV with cold water and down the hatch. Moments later I felt drippy, I kept reading on. I decided to put a few dashes of ground cayenne pepper in a steaming cup of water, stir in some more ACV and quickly sipped it all. As I type this, mucous and phlegm are breaking up and even if this is only temporary, it is still relief. Thanks to all the folks for their input and to the people who operate this site."Replies
[YEA] 12/27/2010: Dee from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "WOW-- unbelievably quick relief! I have had a sinus infection for the past 5 days-- unable to breathe through either nostril, with ears popping, impaired hearing, and sore throat nightly after breathing through my mouth constantly. I tried everything-- at least six over-the-counter nasal sprays (both traditional and herbal remedies) as well as a neti pot/saline solution. Nothing seemed to do the trick and I was at wit's end. I just came across this site, immediately mixed up some ACV and water, and downed it. Less than 15 minutes later I am breathing clearly for the first time in almost a week! I would never have believed it was so good for this chronic problem-- I will keep this trick up my sleeve for future use! Many thanks for the tip..."
[YEA] 12/15/2006: Tina from Helena, AL: "Hi There. I ran across this website the other night as I was searching the internet in search of a natural approach to cure a sore throat that was so advanced that my tonsils were red and looked blistery and I could hardly swallow. It was very painful. I ran across the recommendation for the Cayenne pepper gargle but then saw that if I added ACV to this that I could drink it and it would cure my sinuses also which I have had a problem with for years and had a discharge of muscous every morning that was almost a reddish-brown color and tons of pressure in my head and had been taken Advil cold and sinus for it. I began drinking it yesterday morning and still did the Cayenne pepper and water gargle last night. My throat is already cleared up and I believe my sinuses are beginning but I am not sure what is happening with my sinuses. It seems to me like I am coughing up alot of stuff that has probably been there for while and I noticed that my mucous is now a light yellow color. My nose is also stuffy and I feel like I am literally coughing up stuff out of my chest that I didnt even know was there (lol). I am still drinking this little mixture today and will continue to as I believe that what is happening is that I am healing and that all of this that has been there is beginning to come out and I can tell because although my mucous is not clear yet and is very light yellowish, it is not brown/reddish which says something (lol). Despite all of this (The stuffy nose and coughing up mucous) I seem to feel great with a very high energy level and no pressure in the head causing it to ache. So I will let you know the final result and am very greatful for this remedy and this wonderful website and will be consulting it regularly for my health concerns and my clients"
Apple Cider Vinegar, Molasses
[YEA] 10/08/2006: Elizabeth : "I have been on a regimen of 2 tbls of ACV and 1 tbls of blackstrap molasses 2x's a day for about 4 months now. I've just recently in the last month added 1/2 tsp of cayenne (1 tsp/day total) to my ACV and chase it with a glass of water. I read on your site that cayenne helps circulation and that was the primary reason I started adding it to my ACV. Before that I would cook with it and added it to my food everyday as I really like hot food. Well, I was pleasantly surprised with what happen next... The puffiness around my eyes (due to some kind of allergies food or airborne I'm guessing) and face is COMPLETELY gone! No kidding! I have a healthy glow to me now and the puffiness around my eyes that would make me look tired all the time, has vanished. The next thing I noticed is that my sinus' are clear, the dull sinus headache that I lived with for so long is gone and I can breath through my nose at night. As a result I think I'm getting more oxygen to my brain and body now and I definately feel much more clear headed. I had no idea how much congestion was in my sinus' that I had just learned to live with. After ingesting a teaspon a day for about a month, although results came within a couple of days, I look and feel so much better. The only thing I can attribute to the changes to is the cayenne. Thank you so much for posting this remedy. Makes me want to kiss you guys right on the lips! SMACK!"
Apple Cider Vinegar, Olive Oil, Baking Soda
[YEA] 03/14/2014: Doddie from Georgia, Usa: "2T ACV, 2T Olive Oil, 1/4t baking soda in 8 oz warm water, was the only ingredients I did have. Been suffering from chest congestion and hacking up phlegm for 6 days. Relief from the coughing, congestion, within the hour! My nose drained and 2 hr later it is still working. Unbelievable! The worst thing I have ever had to drink down in my life (and I am good at drinking horrible tasting stuff for medicinal purposes) . I had use the last of my honey before I got sick. This really does work, and I did manage to drink it down. I will try the ACV, honey, baking soda, cayenne pepper, and lemon juice the next time. The coughing stopped almost immediately. I had to post because it worked so well!!"
Apple Cider Vinegar, Oregano Oil
[YEA] 02/07/2009: Jennifer from Vancouver, Canada: "Oil of Oregano and Apple Cider Vinegar cured my sinus congestion in minutes.
The idea popped into my head after trying various other remedies with minimum results. I took roughly 5 drops of Oil of Oregano and 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar, and my sinus congestion cleared in about 5 minutes. I now have my taste back!! :) I take my OoO by taking a large sip of water in my mouth, then dropping it in on top. As for the ACV, I take it straight with cold water. It shocked me how quickly and efficiently it worked!
Dosage: 5 drops Oil of Oregano
2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar"
02/07/2009: Jennifer from Vancouver, Canada replies: "Hello, I forgot to add in my post that I used a Neti Pot before taking the Oil of Oregano and Apple Cider Vinegar for my sinus congestion. The Neti Pot alone didn't leave my sinuses clear; but the combination of the Neti Pot, followed by 5 drops of OoO, and 2 tablespoons of ACV kept my sinuses clear for half the day. I also had my sense of taste back.
I've used this combination a second time now, and it is just as effective as the first time. This one's a keeper!"
Apple Cider Vinegar, Tomato Tea
[YEA] 11/26/2008: Diane from St. Paul, Minnesota, U.S.A.: "Yesterday I went to the internet in search of a natural remedy for my terrible sinus congestion. Usually irrigating my sinuses with the neti pot (warm water, salt, baking soda) does the trick, but this virus seemed to be getting the upper hand. I tried the apple cider remedy (hot water--about a cup--2 T natural honey, 2 T organic apple cider vinegar) and the tomato tea. I had two cups of both. Within a half hour my sinuses started to clear. I could breath through my nose all night long and here I am--next morning--breathing easily. I don't know which did the trick--maybe both. No matter. I'm very happy. Thank you!"
EC: Receipe for tomato tea is here.
[YEA] 04/18/2006: Kera from Washington DC: "I have IBS and when I'm really stressed it flares up. So, lately I've been eating apples for regular fiber intake. In the last 4 days I've had...8 apples. After my second apple today I noticed that my sinuses were draining. In the 8 hours between my second and third apple the drainage diminished. But after eating apple #3 my sinuses began draining again and I had a sort of itchy feeling in the back of my mouth from the drainage. Is it possible that I've had a similar reaction to just eating apples rather than drinking the Apple Cider Vinegar?"
[YEA] 09/23/2011: Kathy from Vancouver, Canada: "I suffered for years in my childhood with sinus problems - had them drained, antibiotics, Sudafed, drops, etc. Now I am in my sixties and have been doing more home remedies. After many years I again got sinusitis and found this treatment on an Ayurveda website. It worked INSTANTLY and my nose stayed clear throughout the day. Just chew 4-5 peppercorns and wash it down with water. Amazing! Nothing else needed. Ayurveda has been my choice of naturapathic medicine for 8 years - and I have never been healthier!"
12/16/2012: Ken from Sunderland, Ontario: "hi, would like some feedback on anyone with sinus problems, I heard Cayenne really helps, just started taking the pills one day ago, will share my results after xmas if any tks"
[YEA] 12/13/2010: Veejay25 from Seattle, Wa: "WOW! After reading all these reviews on sniffing cayenne for sinus congestion, it may come across as too good to be true; but I tried it and all I can say it WOW!! It really does work ladies and gentlemen. I took about a (half of a rice size) amount of cayenne, placed one amount on my pinky finger (for one nostril) and the second amount on a small spoon (for the other nostril), and simultaneously sniffed each amount. Instantly, I did feel burning and I breathed and recalled a scripture "when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I", and then I could tolerate the 30 secs on burning. I felt a menthol sensation and a throbbing of the blood vessels in my nose (it wasnt scary or anything). Then the mucous began to ran down my nose. I blew my nose and SO much mucous came out! Before the treatment, nothing came out. After blowing my nose, my pressure and clogged ears was instantly relieved! Praise God for cayenne."Replies
12/13/2010: Diane from Berkeley, Ca replies: "This seems rather drastic. The same thing happens to me when I cook (very spicy) authentic Thai and Indian food. And it's a lot more pleasurable. I love the chile high, and the nose-clearing goodness of those thai chiles. Eating spicy food on a regular basis is great for the body."
12/13/2010: Tanya from Hailey, Id, Usa replies: "Wow! I'll have to remember this! Thank you for sharing! :D"
10/30/2011: Nathan from Pittsburgh, Pa, Usa replies: "To relieve lingering sinus congestion due to allergies, I tried the method of snorting small rice sized amounts of cayenne powder.
Like Veejay25 said, there is about 30 seconds of fairly intense burning. For me, however, the burning continued for approximately 30 minutes after taking the powder. After the intense first few minutes, it gradually lessened. The pain is nothing that an average person could not tolerate. There was also about 6 to 7 minutes of intense sneezing, watering eyes, and nose blowing. If you plan to try this, make sure you have about 10 or 15 minutes to recover.
My sinuses cleared slightly, though not completely. I should stress that I did not have a severe sinus condition, so better results could probably be achieved during treatment of a worse condition.
One question to consider is the potential for cayenne to damage the nasal cavity if used chronically. Of course we should all realize it would never be recommended to use many (not all) of the remedies on this site for extended periods due to the lack of scientific research on long term side effects."
[YEA] 12/26/2006: Devon from Scottsdale, AZ: "This is a very good temporary solution. Some people claim that it helps with sore throats but I'm still testing this theory. I found these steps to be particularly effective. 1. Heat about one cup of water to steaming and add about 2 tablespoons of red (cayenne) peppers. Stir for approximately one minute and press the peppers with a spoon as you would a teabag for added heat. (Easy Tip: The peppers do not have to be fresh and I actually used the bottled kind that people sprinkle on pizza) 2. Strain. (You may chose not to do this if you like chunky water.... EWWW!) 3. Try not to burn your mouth! Blow on the mixture for a little bit (just like you would tea!) and gargle for at least 20 seconds at least three or four times. (It helps to swallow a bit of the mixture) 4. Blow your nose until it's ALL outta there and you're not getting the post-nasal drip! (THIS IS KEY) Repeat every 15 minutes as necessary. My personal experience may differ from yours. Today I was diagnosed with a sinus infection and I commonly have these (about every 3 months) so I figured why not try something new. I would also recommend a saline nasal spray to bathe the sinuses morning and night. This has a similar effect and disinfects your nose. It works! I find that the more you use these methods the more effective they are."
[YEA] 12/26/2006: Devon : "Just a quick amendment to what I said earlier.
USE ONLY ONE TABLESPOON OF PEPPER IF NOT A LITTLE BIT LESS. One tablespoon per cup was pretty hot. And if you use that recipe it's a fairly big batch so you can save what you don't use and reheat the mixture in the microwave if you need it later. If you are using the stuff I used (the kind of red pepper sprinkled on pizza instead of whole peppers) I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND STRAINING and possibly even use a cheese cloth. If the stuff gets in the back of your throat it can really tickle."
[YEA] 10/04/2006: Jen from Toronto, Ontario: "I drank a mixture of lemon water cayenne pepper and syrup within a few hours not only was my sinus clear but so was my chest and I could breath much better."
05/28/2011: Kathie from Houston, Texas/usa: "I do not think I would sniff Chamomile tea up my nose... It is too potent in that form and being from the ragweed family.
Chamomile essential oil, on the other hand, sounds reasonable. Because the essential oil is so pure, most all allergens are removed during the production. I could see putting a drop or two in a mixture of 1/4 cup baking soda and a 1/2 cup salt (use canning salt b/c it does not have additives that prevent it from clumping). Use 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon to a cup of warm water for nasal washes."
