Sinus Congestion (also referred to as Nasal Congestion) occurs when the membranes lining the nose get swollen from inflammed blood vessels. Home remedy treatments for sinus congestion can help! Home remedies to alleviate congestion, plus hundreds of others from our worldwide contributors as reported below, include food elimination, neti pot rinsing, and warm compresses on the face.
A stuffy nose can seriously ruin your day! All the nose blowing, the sneezing, the red and raw nose is just miserable. And if the cause is allergies, the flu, or a cold then this is only one of your symptoms. Sometimes, though, congestion seems to occur in the sinuses even without an obvious illness - but you still get that congested feeling, perhaps accompanied by a sinus headache and runny nose.
Home Remedies for Sinus Congestion: You want your home treatment for congestion to address the cause and symptoms from several directions. A neti pot or other cleansing option and antiviral foods or herbs can wash away the infectious or allergenic cause of congestion. Analgesics can relieve pain and headache. Aromatherapy can open up the sinus passages, and steam or spicy concoctions can help flush out the congested sinuses.

Acupressure, Sinus Rinse
[YEA] 01/31/2011: Dianec from Los Angeles, Ca, United States: "Hello I submitted the sinus help regarding accupressure and sinus rinse about a year ago! For a week now I have had very little problem with my decade long sinusitis nightmare. While the accupressure and sinus rinse helped this is what is working for me about 100%. I HAVE BEEN WEARING A WARM CAP ON MY HEAD DAY AND NIGHT AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEM WITH MY SINUSITIS! I'M NOT KIDDING! So far the draining, spitting, and post-nasal drip have stopped. It seems keeping my head warm keeps my sinuses normal! Try it and see if it works for you! Such a simple thing has me back to normal.I have been wearing a large green knitted cap that covers my entire head. Thanks Diane"Replies
02/07/2011: Arcadian from New Braunfels, Tx replies: "What's a Warm Cap & where do you get it from? I would like to try that out."
01/25/2012: Julz from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "The tomato tea is not only delicious, but it honest to goodness is the only things that's worked thus far for my sinus infection. Finally I can breathe!"
ACV, Garlic, Oregano Oil, Sea Salt
[YEA] 01/09/2008: KIM from MARINA DEL REY, CA: "Over the holiday I took a bus trip and It seemed that the person on the side, back and front of me was coughing and sneezing. I had a turtle neck and a scarf to cover my mouth and nose but when I returned home I kept feeling like I was going to catch a cold for a week. When it finally manifested it was by way of my sinus cavity and throat with a dry cough. I took an over the counter med. and Motrin and was still miserable. I finally could not take it any more and typed in cures for sinus in my computers search engine and your site was at the top of the list. When I clicked on the site the testimonial page popped up first. In Los Angeles we have a store called Yummy.com that delivers organic groceries. On their website they didn't have the ACV but when I talked to the sales assoc. She checked the shelf and they not only had ACV but it was organic with "mothers veil." It has been 3 days and my cough is completely gone and my sinuses no longer drip. My mixture is:
2 garlic cloves
2tsps. oregano oil
2 tbs. organic ACV
dash sea salt
microwaved for 2 1/2 minutes
in a coffe mug"
[WARNING!] 02/04/2011: Linny from St. Louis, Missouri replies: "DEAR EARTH CLINIC, I WROTE REC. ABOUT MY BREATHING PROBLEMS.
READ ABOUT TAKING: 2 GARLIC CLOVES, 2 TEASPOONS OREGANO OIL, 2 TALBESPOONS ACV, DASH SEA SALT, 8 OZ. WATER, 2-1/2 MIN IN MICROWAVE IN A MUG.
DID THIS: ALMOST KILLED ME. 2 DROPS MAYBE OF OREGANO OIL. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN DO 2 TEASPOONS. PLEASE, PLEASE REMOVE FROM EARTH CLINIC BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. THANKS, LINNY"
02/05/2011: Cindy from Paradise, California, Usa replies: "First of all - it had to have been 2 drops because that is the way O of Oregano is normally recommended, by a drop at a time. Second, it has to be diluted by olive oil or another carrier oil if it was concentrated. That is very important. If you buy it at a store make sure if it is already diluted or if you need to dilute it. It works wonders for many things. I use 2 drops on my toothbrush and have saved myself hundreds of dollars at the dentist."
02/11/2011: June from Pasadena, California replies: "Hi Linny,
I have taken large quantities of oregano oil when I've been sick and never had any side effects! I took 3-4 supercritical capsules at at time and up to 4 doses a day. I currently have oregano leaf herbal extract in my cupboard and just looked up the dosage on the bottle after reading your thread: it says 30-40 drops per dose. Not sure what kind of Oregano leaf oil you were taking but I think you'll be okay."
03/19/2011: Marta from Louisa, Va replies: "Linny, Thanks for the warning/correction. June - the 100% pure undiluted organo oil (origanum vulgare) is wayyyy strong. It's very different from pills or extract which is not as strong. Still great and useful, but the pure essential oil burns even on your skin if undiluted. The 1-2 drops of the oil is the safe way to do it (diluted in something else). Hope this is helpful, and thank you for the tips! "
05/04/2011: Kim from Marina Del Rey, Ca replies: "update: the Oregano oil I uesd was the cooking variety."
06/29/2011: Sadie from Kapa'au, Hawaii replies: "The difference is Linny was using undiluted oregano essential oil which my Dr. says to put one drop on your tongue. It's something you'll never forget! Use at least a tablespoon of oil per drop to dilute, which makes the two teaspoons in the recipe a more reasonable dose."
08/14/2011: Rbrooke from Port St Lucie, Florida replies: "Biotics Research makes a great Oil of Oregano in pill form... Easy to take. It's called A.D.P."
02/22/2012: Suzy from Belford, Nj replies: "Could someone please explain to me what ACV is? Sorry, I must not have seen it in the post..THX"
EC: ACV= Apple Cider Vinegar
04/04/2012: Louise from Petawawa, On replies: "Please note that microwaving food kills any nutrient value in it - by heating the raw ACV you are killing the mother cultures and negating the trouble you went to to buy it. Raw ACV might be OK if heated gently, but high heat literally kills the living organisms that give it its healing properties."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 04/17/2008: Johnathon from Toronto, Ontario, Canada: "I tried the ajwain seeds a couple of times yesterday and didn't see any results, i followed the instructions to the T, didn't experince any of the sensations that i read from other peoples testamonials, so i then tried the spicy tomato tea and only got minor results. So i made another tea about three hours later and still only minor results, it did however help me sleep better, without having to take my any pills which i normally take to help me sleep.. I woke up without any pressure in my sinuses, and no headache, so this morning a dank another tomato tea, and a couple more througout the day. Along with drinking the tea i decided to steam with apple cyder vinager which really helped loosen up my stuffy sinuses, i added thyme and fenugreek to the cyder, not sure if that helps? im going to try a few more cures from your site, and continue with the tea and steam, and keep searching till i find what works best for me..."
[YEA] 10/27/2006: Mamta from Indiana: "i haven't taken any off the counter medicines for colds since 5 yrs !! and my condition was pretty bad when i came to the US. we got Ajwain seeds from an indian store or you will find it in the indian section of a chineses food store . Ajwain is indian oregano but very strong. everytime i get a cold and chest is congested...i take one tsp of ajwain and roast it on a flat pan. once it starts to smoke , quiclky put in a kitchen tissue and take deep inhalations, it makes you sneeze since all the nerve in the nose are raw from the cold....but in 5 minutes it all peaceful, no more colds. and RELIEF...esp. helpful in asthmatic attacks.....also have a strong concaction of ginger, black pepper, clove, basil and cinnamon...boil it in water for 5-10 min and after it cools a bit put a tsp of honey and have it hot. honey should not be heated. according to Ayurveda all these thing reduce phlegm in the body.... enjoy"
Apple Cider Vinegar for Congestion
Home Remedy Ingredients
- Organic Apple Cider Vinegar - 1 Tablespoon
- Filtered Warm Water - 8 Oz
- Honey - 1 Tablespoon (optional)
Take the apple cider vinegar tonic listed above two-three times a day for congestion. This mixture can quickly break up congestion and improve your other cold and flu symptoms as well. Simply add one tablespoon each apple cider vinegar and honey to a tall glass of warm water, and sip.
[NAY] 05/23/2013: Sandi M from El Dorado Hills, Ca: "I'm so disappointed. I've had nasal congestion for 3 days now and have tried a few OTC and natural remedies, but everything only temporarily helped. Then I came across this site and gave ACV a try. I've now sniffed it, gave myself a facial steam with it and drank it with a mixture of honey and hot water.... Nothing. Well, maybe not nothing; on a scale of 1-10 (10 being able to breath clearly without obstruction and 1 being completely blocked) I'm about a 3. I can sort of still breath through my nose, but it's only mildly better. Bummer. I was really hoping this would work. :-("
[YEA] 05/15/2013: Rosie from Artesia, New Mexico : "I was having such a hard time breathing so I googled home remedies and came across this one using ACV. I heated 6oz of water, 2 tblsp ACV and 1 tblsp honey on the stove and drank it warm. It was actually not bad tasting and worked great. In a matter of minutes I could breath. I will definitely do it again."
[YEA] 02/25/2013: Lori from Chicago Heights, Il: "I have been drinking the Apple Cider Vinegar tea for about 3 weeks 16oz a day. With that I have experienced loose stool and drainage from sinuses. Today I do not feel the greats but I am able to breath out of both nostrils and that feels great. I will continue to use ACV and the tea. Thank you"
[YEA] 10/23/2012: Big Joe from Chicago, Il: "I read about heating ACV and breathing the fumes. I bought a spray bottle of saline solution and I squeezed some of it out into a little dish. Then I put one drop of organic ACV into the squeezed out saline and then squeezed it to suck all back in the bottle. The result is a very low concentration of ACV that you can spray into you nose at any time. Works great! You need to really breathe it in deeply to get it all the way inside your nose. It stops congestion right away"Replies
01/05/2013: Randy from Howell, Michigan replies: "I have been heating ACV and breathing the fumes for the last few years when ever I feel congested or like I'm getting a sinus infection. This has always worked great for me. Heat a small amount in a pan on the stove (I would not microwave, it may destroy the properties of the ACV) SLOWLY breath in the vapors and hold in as long as you can. You can even breath this into your lungs as long as you do it VERY SLOWLY!! To hard and fast will cause you to choke. You will find that it will loosen up phlegm and mucous like nothing else! You will get immmediate relief and the key is to not stop breathing it in just because you get relief so quickly. I try to keep breathing it in 3 times a day for several days to be sure the bug gets killed by the acv, which it will. I do like the idea of making a nasal spray which I am going to make up and try."
[YEA] 06/04/2013: Christine from Ma replies: "I was miserable and just tried this. It worked within minutes!!! Thank you! Could not breathe at all through my nose. Feel wonderful!"
[YEA] 09/25/2012: Newnerdmom from Salt Lake City, Ut: "I'm sitting here breathing and amazed! Truly did not expect this to work. I have had severe sinus congestion for days along with a horrible cough. I have heart arrhythmias so can't take most decongestants and antihistamines weren't working. Neti pot - helped for a few minutes. Steam - worked while steaming. Saline nasal spray - didn't get through the goo. I am a wife, mother, full-time student, voice teacher, and have two part-time jobs (no, there are not enough hours in a day) and don't have time to be sick one second longer. I tried 6 oz. Water, 2 Tbs. Vinegar, 1 Tbs. Honey and heated. Drank it down - gagging numerous times. Within minutes I could breathe through both nostrils. WOW!"Replies
11/13/2012: Roxanne from Dallas, Tx replies: "The person from Australia suggested holding your nose closed and blowing hard, as suggested by a Chinese Doctor. This is crazy! That can ruin your ear drums."
11/13/2012: Roxanne from Dallas, Tx replies: "I used 2 Apple Cinnamon herbal tea bags, after boiling a large cup of water in the microwave. I added 2 T. AC Vinegar and 2 large Tblsp. Honey. My sinuses instantly drained, and it tasted like hot apple cider! No gagging involved here. I might try the ACV in the Saline solution too, because I still feel pain in my sinuses, probably from being stopped up so long. They were throbbing so bad earlier, I felt like you could see it throb in the mirror."
12/19/2012: Robert from Katy, Texas replies: "I must either be doing something wrong or my sinus issues are far more severe than the typical persons. I have tried both the ACV recipe and the recipe for Hypersonic Saline Solution( 1 quart of distilled water, 2-3 tablespoons of Sea Salt, 1 tablespoon 3% Hydrogen Peroxide) and while both recipes do get the sinuses flowing, now I'm left with draining sinuses down my throat and a hacking cough.
I need something to dry out my sinuses, any recommendations?"
12/20/2012: Lloyd from Charlotte, Nc replies: "You've got the infection way back in the sinus and possibly in the ears and down the eustation tubes. Use an ear syringe and gently squirt colloidal silver into sinuses and ears. The CS will sting on the prominently infected side of sinus. Repeat ten minutes later. The sting will be gone. Repeat as needed. Infection will be gone in two days... Possibly in two hours. Lipid coated viruses are harder to kill. Be persistent. The silver will kill it."
[YEA] 03/04/2012: Sherry from Barnesville, Georgia: "A Huge Relief! 5 days before a scheduled surgery my sinuses shut down. First I thought it was a cold or head cold, but had no other symtoms other than sinus trouble. I was in a panic that I would have to re-schedule my surgery that was 6 weeks in the making:( I tried the cup of hot water and thankfully had Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey on hand. It cleared up the congestion and headache immediately. Will try again before bedtime as it seems sleeping is the worst. Thank you for this site. Will be back!"Replies
[YEA] 05/12/2012: Lorraine K from Garner, Nc replies: "THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! My husband drank 1/2 a cup of 2T ACV, 1 t honey & 8 oz of boiling water. He had to stop drinking it b/c it was gross. When he stopped he was able to blow his nose which is awesome. Then this morning he woke w/NO head pressure/congestion or headache. Yes, he will try that again b/c he hates medicine. THANKS!!!"
[YEA] 05/21/2012: Linn from Maine, Usa replies: "Best remedy ever! I was skeptical. I have been sick with severe sinus congestion/infections since January, it is now almost June. Over the counter sinus sprays helped temporarily, then not at all. Tried Steam, and neti pots, flushes, etc. Doctors prescribed antibiotics, steroids, allergy medication. All temporary or no response. Out of desperation I tried 6 oz of water, two teaspoons Apple Cider Vinegar, and approx two teaspoons of honey. Heated in the microwave. Within a minute I could blow my nose, within ten minutes I released all the pressure in my head. I still have tons to get rid of, this is the first thing I have tried that actually got rid of the congestion. I am thankful. Thank you so much for sharing! "
[YEA] 06/17/2012: Felicia from Cope, Sc, USA replies: "I tried this 3 days ago and I must say I am amazed! I was suffering from sinus congestion for 2 days. I found this site and read about the results and figured I had nothing to lose. I put 2 tbsp of acv, 2 tbsp of honey and 8 oz of water, heated in mic for abt 30-45 secs and drank it. I felt relief in about 30 mins and could finally breathe! I slept better than I had in weeks! I did the same thing the next morning and now I have no problems! I have been telling everybody about this! It really works!!!"
[YEA] 06/21/2012: Nicole from Grand Rapids, Michigan replies: "Loved it! I add just a bit of coffee creamer to make it more palletable and a little more creamy. Within minutes my sinuses were almost cleared!"
[YEA] 07/17/2012: Juniorsgirlnyc from Staten Island, New York replies: "I, on odd occasions, get severe nasal and chest congestion out of no where! I hate it I can't sleep I can't breath and all that OTC stuff makes me foggy, dried out and really sick to my stomach... And I don't trust doctors who are paid to push certain drugs. So I had enough after my 3rd night laying in bed hating the clock ticking I got up and searched for salvation! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH! Nothing worked so well and so quickly. I don't feel dizzy, no nauseous and not dried out. I can just simply breath. Nasal inflammation and congestion is so annoying... LOVE ACV! I used a 1/3 cup ACV 1/3 honey and mixed it with my favorite pomegranite and blueberry tea! Never again will I suffer!"
11/13/2012: Robert from Katy, Texas, Usa replies: "While this mixture did resolve my sinus congestion, its the chest congestion thats showing only moderate improvement. I've taken several doses ( 2 tbl. ACV, 1 tbl. Honey and 8 oz. Warm water), each seperated by 4 hours. My question is: How often can/should you take this before your body reaches overload?
For me and the time of year, this can develop into pneumonia if I'm not careful. EC, any thoughts?"
01/18/2013: Holisticmama from Greensboro, Nc replies: "Robert: Try sprinkling a little Cayenne pepper on your food also you can squeeze some fresh lemon juice in a cup of spring water and add 1/8 tsp of cayenne with a tbsp of Maple syrup. Drink slowly. Great for chest congestion."
[YEA] 01/25/2012: Petnut from Spokane, Wa: "I read through this post and thought I would try it - within minutes my sinuses are draining. I put about 2 tbs in a cup of tea with some stevia. Lovin it."
[YEA] 12/27/2011: Ali from Edmonton, Ab: "In the city of Edmonton, this time of year, it has been really brutal for cold and sinus problems! It's very dry, dusty and there is no snow.
I have been suffering from colds and sinus trouble... and I refuse to take antibiotics, because I do know for a fact that there are natural cures for everything.
I swear by apple cider vinegar uses for many things, but I have not tried it for sinus trouble, THANK YOU for all the comments. I will try the ACV now."Replies
[YEA] 01/18/2012: Priceless from Dayton, Ohio replies: "Ok I was @ my wits in... I had spend over $50 in over the counter medication. I had ended up over medicated myself @ this point due to now insurance already missing a week of work the only one working in the home... I found this remedy. I honestly went and bought the ACV and fixed my glass as soon as I walked in my home. Instantly I started feeling better. I did wake up around 3 am due to the pressure I guess. I took a tylenol so I could return to sleep. Took another class 8oz this morning..! Everyone @ work was like you look like you went to the SPA!! You look better!! ...
Most of all I thank GOD for healing. But I appreciate this website.. I told everyone @ work.... @ lunch one of my co-workers is running to get some ACV... I do hope this helps someone.. Because everyones remarks definitley helped me..
Thanks for all the responses!"
01/23/2012: Brenda from Manning, South Carolina replies: "I've gone through sinus surgery and suffer at least once a week with congestion and running. Got bad tonight that I could not breathe thru BOTH nostrils. I am pregnant so I can not take anything. I drank 6 oz of warm water with 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar and one tbsp honey. Warmed it in the microwave for 20seconds. After about 5 minutes, I can breathe thru left nostril. Right one is still blocked but I'm happy to have at least one to breathe from!!!
I do know that cutting sugar and caffeine will help. A nutritionalist also said that milk/dairy is mucous forming. Can't live without all three! I also learned thru study that continuous decongestants will actually worsen congestion. Hope this helps everyone because it is miserable not being able to breathe!"
12/22/2011: Bonniem from Riverside, Cal., United States: "Hello I have been using a drop of Apple Cider Vinegar in warm water in my Neti pot. It works great for sinusitis! I irrigate my sinuses and even use a little in my ears which also helps. I get great comfort from using ACV in water in my Neti pot.
Is this safe? I only use it when I need to and I only use about one drop of Apple Cider Vinegar in the water.
Can this upset the PH Balance in my sinuses? Anyone know?"Replies
01/27/2012: Crystal from Chattanooga, Tn (usa) replies: "I would think it would help the pH balance, particularly if you're using the ACV with "the mother"--that's the apple cider vinegar you see that has what looks like dirt in the bottom. This is actually good bacteria, which evidently is what your sinuses needed!
I am not a doctor, I just have researched a lot."
