Osteoarthritis Remedies

"Osteoarthritis (OA, also known as degenerative arthritis, degenerative joint disease), is a clinical syndrome in which low-grade inflammation results in pain in the joints, caused by abnormal wearing of the cartilage that covers and acts as a cushion inside joints and destruction or decrease of synovial fluid that lubricates those joints. As the bone surfaces become less well protected by cartilage, the patient experiences pain upon weight bearing, including walking and standing. Due to decreased movement because of the pain, regional muscles may atrophy, and ligaments may become more lax. OA is the most common form of arthritis.

"Osteoarthritis" is derived from the Greek word "osteo", meaning "of the bone", "arthro", meaning "joint", and "itis", meaning inflammation, although many sufferers have little or no inflammation. A common misconception is that OA is due solely to wear and tear, due to the fact that OA typically is not present in younger people. However, while age is correlated with OA incidence, this merely illustrates that OA is a process that takes time to develop. There is usually an underlying cause for OA, in which case it is described as secondary OA. If no underlying cause can be identified it is described as primary OA. "Degenerative arthritis", often used as a synonym for OA, but the latter involves both degenerative and regenerative changes." (Wikipedia)

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  01/14/2010: Alittlebitsassy from Langley Bc, Canada writes: "I have been taking 1 TB ACV in either 8 oz juice or water 2x daily for the past month now. I have osteoarthritis in both my knees and they ACV has helped immensley with the pain and inflammation. The only problem I have noticed is that I am getting some bad stomach pains and also racing of the heart this past week or so. Has anyone else encountered this problem while taking ACV? Thank you!"

05/21/2010: Peggy from West Covina, Ca replies: "Hi, Alittlebitsassy, that happened to me to for the first two weeks, your body is detoxifying. I started with ACV for melasma and spider veins. Melasma improved just a little bit, spider veins got better 50% in only one month. I was not feeling anymore pain on the bones and loved the way my skin start looking, but almost quit because of the bad stomaches and feeling bloated. My mom convinced me to wait a little bit and explained what was going on. I don't regret it, I also lost some weight without even dieting and start feeling more energetic. I stopped drinking it just because of being lazy, but I already started again this week."
[YEA]  08/09/2011: Eve from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia replies: "A lot of my friends thanked me for this. They have been taking condroitin, glucosamine, pain killers but didn't work. I have been having osteoathritis for years on top of fibros dysplasia on the bone of my right thigh and my husband has been having backache and knee ache for so long. Thankfully, I met a very old Chinese doctor who told me to take 6 capsule (1000 mg) of Omega 3 for the first 3 months to get our system used to Omega 3. After the 3rd month, continue with just 2 or 3 (depending on how severe your aches are - I take 3 daily) for the rest of your life. It is probably not a cure but it definitely rid us of the horrible pain on our knees and back, wrist and ankles. And all my friends around my age (50 and above) tried it and they have now just depend on Omega 3 and got rid of their condroitin and glucosamine. Take them in one go. Omega 3 are harmless (they are more of EPO or fish oil) not drugs. Please do not replace Omega 3 with Fish Oil. Fish Oil do not give the same effect and may not work."
08/11/2011: Lily from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia replies: "If you make soup by boiling the bones to make your stock using pork bones (bacon bones), chicken bones etc. then that will help with osteoarthritis. You get the chondroitin naturally this way. Cheers Lily."
10/11/2011: Judith from Lakes Entrance Vic , Australia replies: "I was diagnosed withosteoarthriris and have been using 6000 gr. of fish oil a day, this has loosened up my body but not got rid of pain. I am trying Iodine now as my daughter has been cured of a lump in her breast which was fibrocistic, but could have turned to cancer. She feels much better in herself. So do look up Iodine on internet this is a very forgotten mineral which I think most people are lacking. I will try the apple cider too. Judith"

By the way, you HAVE heard about boron for preventing and even reversing osteo-arthritis, haven't you?

Probiotics also rid me of sinus infections, but one needs to gradually work up to take them plentifully & regularly to be effective. A good idea, in my opinion, if one has allergies, IBS, sinus infections or otherwise compromised immunity. I read a scientific detailed report online stating that probiotics bond with carcenogens and "dance" them out of the body.

My husband has been on Ted's HA remedy for approx 2 1/2 weeks now, and is amazed at how differently he feels. The pain in his body is disappearing from top to bottom. Ted's remedy really works! Order the HA powder from Purebulk (Ted's recommendation, which is why I used it) or just go to the health food store and get the Now brand that is in capsule form, and includes msm in it. Just open the capsules and follow Ted's recipe for mixing it. Look at Purebulk's instruction page on HA, though, to give you specifics Ted does not mention, such as cold water ONLY, mix every few hours to blend the powder with the water, etc. Just follow Ted's actual recipe of ha powder and sea salt (NOT regular salt! BIG difference! ) Anyway, the reason I wanted to write you, though, is to tell you that hubby is going to now start on the msm for a tiny glitch in his back that he wants gone (although he is now saying that it's feeling so much better with just the HA. ) Read Ted's rather long post on HA. Very enlightening."

CETYL MYRISTOLEATE SUPPLEMENT

[YEA]  11/07/2009: James from Tucson, Arizona writes: "Osteoarthritis - I have had Arthritis for many years beginning as a teen doing sports. I always pretended it was just sore muscles in my back, but at age 66yrs old my Doc said my entire spine-top to bottom- was diseased.

Initially I went with cold gel pack followed by heating pad and 7 exercises given by a physical therapist. When that was not getting it done I got on the web and a naturopathic Doc, that I like, was recommending an essential fatty acid called cetyl myristoleate. Albino rats don't get arthritis and it's because they have this EFA (Essential Fatty Acid) in their systems. This was discovered by a Dr. Diehl in the 1960's. He worked for the NIH so he had the resources to find a way to produce this rare supplement and it has been offered on the market since 1991.

When I started it, I was in a bad way and feeling some hopelessness. It took approximately one month for me to get pain free. This is a typical time period. I use the product produced by a company owned by Dr Diehl's current family and this formulation is more expensive, but I believe it is the one that gives results. I'm currently doing a second month for good measure. They claim relief can last 2-3 years at which time you repeat. There are zero side effects but you must follow directions to use on an empty stomach and not close to caffeine. This was my salvation from disability!"

EC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cetyl_myristoleate

"Cetyl myristoleate is the cetyl ester of myristoleic acid. It has multiple biological properties, including as an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever, as well as being an immune system modulator..."

CHRONIC DEHYDRATION THEORY

WARNING!

[WARNING!]  08/18/2008: Cindy from Wichita, Kansas writes: "Water cannot do its thing without salt. Salt is number 3 on the list of things you can't live without. 1 and 2 are air and water. I suspect that if you do not take salt (preferably unprocessed sea salt) the body will break down the calcium in the bones to get at the salts they contain. I've done a lot of research on dehydration but have not seen this correlation anywhere. It is merely my suspicion due to the relationship between chronic dehydration combined with low salt intake teachings and the epidemic of osteoporosis. It is suspected that over 75% of people in the US are chronically dehydrated which means that 75% of the human bodies in the US are operating in emergency, water rationing mode. Sipping doesn't count and neither do other liquids. The body does not process other liquids the same way it processes plain water on an empty stomach. Water is used by every system in the body. Including the process it must go through to steal water from the colon. My personal rule of thumb is that any liquid that is not plain water belongs to the colon."

Thank you very much for this information. Can you please tell me how much sea salt you add to your water and how many times you would drink this each day? Also, how would you factor in the sodium that a typical person eats on a day to day basis? Granted that the source is probably mostly iodized salt... but how often would you drink the water/sea salt? Thank you in advance.

08/24/2008: Bessie from Calgary, AB, Canada replies: "I'm sure Cindy will respond, but in the meantime you may want to check out the water cure at http://www.watercure.com/

Very interesting Web site and one of the ingredients is free (water) - the other isn't very expensive (pure sea salt - you only use a bit). Good luck!"
08/24/2008: Teresa from Kenedy, Texas replies: "The Water Cure

The Water Cure Recipe:
Drink 1/2 your body weight of water in ounces, daily. Example 180 lb = 90 oz. of water daily. Divide that into 8 or 10 oz. glasses and that's how many glasses you will need to drink, daily. Use 1/4 tsp. of salt for every quart of water you drink. Use salt liberally with food. As long as you drink the water, you can use the salt. Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. These are diuretics and will dehydrate you. Every 6 oz. of caffeine or alcohol requires an additional 10 to 12 oz. of water to re-hydrate you."

03/27/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Marra, I also had ostheoartritis around your age, mine in the right knee. First I was ok with supplements like shark's fin or wild berry extract, back when I only had problems in Spring and Autumn, no idea why. Then the pain became permanent, especially going up and down stairs and the supplements didn't work anymore. A few doctors told me that I would have to be on strong medication which seems to be quite bad for the stomach for a few years till I was old enough to have a new knee.

Luckily someone advised me to go to a health shop and the doctor tried electrodes. I felt better right away, a week later he did the same again and after that he tried another type, a lot more painful, I must say. But that was almost 6 years ago and so far I have never had pain again! He didn't even charge me anything. Last year we went to Portugal and I went to the shop again to let him know that I am still ok. Will I ever have problems again? I don't know.... But so far so good! So don't lose hope, the answer can be just around the corner!"

09/20/2011: Hari Prakash from New Delhi, India replies: "This is a question to the 03/27/2011 input by Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France. Could she please eaborate on the use of "electrodes"??"
09/21/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Hari, what I mean by electrodes are the electric wires with a plastic thing at the end that glues to your skin. Sorry if I used the wrong name..... You know, there are a lot of deviced like that, for example for muscle pain. I can't tell you what kinds they were, I know he used two different kinds, first one, then another one. I could give you his phone number in Lisbon, Portugal but I have no idea whether he speaks English. He goes a lot to Cuba for medical courses. If he doesn't speak English his assistant, a young man, might!"
09/21/2011: Sasha from Chicago, Il replies: "Hi Fran, if he doesn't speak English is it possible you can give him a quick call and ask what kind of electrodes they were? What exactly was he doing sending little jolts of electricity and at what frequency and can you aks him if the lay person can buy such a device and any books or website he recommends?"
09/22/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Sasha, I don't really remember whether he speaks English or not. I was there with my husband (who only speaks English) over a year ago to thank him for what he had done to me and to tell him how well it had turned out. I don't know whether he will tell you exactly what he did.... But please try to call, if you don't manage to get the information I can try but it would be better if you did because you know what questions to ask. He is called Dr. Orlando and the phone numbers are: landline - 214785342 / 214785350 and mobile: 934782606. Please take into account the differences in the hours but you can check that online. It is a shop so they will be open during normal shopping time I would say from 9am till 12 and 3pm till maybe 6pm. If you tell him that you heard from him from Francisca, who had the knee problem and later moved to France. I think that he will remember me.....

If this approach doesn't work I can try to phone him but again I can't promise he will answer my question. And if he doesn't speak English, which he might, his assistant will because he is quite young."

09/22/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Sasha - I'm not Francisca but you might want to look into a TENS machine.

From Wikipedia: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (acronym TENS) is the use of electric current produced by a device to stimulate the nerves for therapeutic purposes.

Physical therapists use them on patients with sports injuries, etc. Try an Internet search for TENS machines in your city. Good luck! Bess"

I made life style changes before I have found this site, but beside that this site gave me additional help how can I cure my condition. I am 51 years old female 6'6" and 126 lbs. I have an Osteoarthritis in my r. knee for three years. It turned really bad in July. The inflammation flared up in my knee and' I had crippling pain in my shoulders and tightness in the back muscles. The pain disturbed my sleep I slept only 3-4 hours at night and I couldn't walk. I remember I was tired since I have had this inflamed arthritis conditions, but I think I was fatigue lot's of times in my earlier life also. It was time to change my diet I thought. My new diet was eating lot's of raw vegetables and fruits and drinking fresh vegetable juices. That really worked, more vegetable juices less sourness! Spending time on the sun 2-3 times a week helped a lot also!!. People forgot about the Sun's healing power and it's FREE! My condition improved a lot within two months. As soon as I got better I started exercising.

I am inhaling 3% Hydrogen Peroxide 3-4 times a day for more than a month. It really helps before the exercise I can do more or if I overwork my knee the sourness and tiredness goes away in 10 minutes after the inhalation. I cannot live without it!

So what is my diet? Raw and some steamed vegetables, juices like fresh carrots, celery, broccoli .....eating baked fish ones or twice a week and maybe one slice of whole wheat bread (not preserved)ones a week and some gout milk yogurt. I am reading everything from Ted. I learned a lot about the vitamins and supplements also. I am drinking the apple cider/baking soda remedies for a couple of weeks since than I cannot kill my energies!! My husband said it's a miracle! The shoulder pain totally has gone my knee improved 50% at least. Four months ago I had trouble to stand up from the chair my leg was so week. Now I am able to walk fast or working out with weights (not heavy weights of course ). Thank you for these wonderful informations on your site. Regards,"

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  11/07/2009: Alice from Shingle Springs, Ca, U.S.A. writes: "Dear Sirs, I have Osteoarthritis, according to my doctor, thought it started in one hand, then wrist, then elbow, shoulder, pelvis and neck one week and moved to the same spots on my left side a week later, I am negative for the RH factor. Anyway, my skin over my knuckles used to be tight like stretched saran, and my fingers were swollen and couldn't make more than a slight "C" shape with them. I started taking juiced greens with red/black grapes with stems, celery, red apples, sometimes ginger root, carrots and red peppers, kale, spinach, cucumbers, cabbage and giving the pulp to my dog for her arthritis. She got well in about 2-3 weeks. I added turmeric with black pepper, boswella serrata pills, maca pills (a peruvian turnip) kelp pills (maca& cruciferous isothiocyanate (sulphoraphane)(active principle) interfere with iodine absorbtion in the thyroid), fish oil (3/da) vit.E(to stabilize),cat's claw pills, Chondroitin sulphate/Glucosamine sulfate pills.safflower blossom tea for IL-1(inflammatory cytokine that interfers with growth factor that maintains joint cartilage, and most recently horsetail tea (silicon) for stiffness which is since starting reduced by half and sage tea for TNF-alpha (promotes inflammation). Swelling and almost all pain and most stiffness and skin is normal, almost make a fist, still researching remaining factors to be addressed. Dog also gets boiled pigs feet for chondroitin sugars while I am seeking fresh turmeric to use because it has higher levels of volatile oils which block COX2 (inflammatory mediator)- also blocked by ginger root. I occassionaly take 1 tsp baking soda in 2 cups water. May start eating boiled beef feet broth for my chondroitins etc. I also had plantar fasciitis but it went away. I originally got the safflower tea for sore mouth from the IL-1 in my periodontal condition, then I found out it was involved in arthritis also."

MANIPULATIVE THERAPY

12/22/2010: Dr Bharti from Lucknow, Up, India writes: "Dear readers,
No other site can be better than earthclinic. Osteo-Arthritis is a disease where apart from pain relief a lot many factors should be considered. First of all it is a degenerative disorder where cartilage is damaged, spurs may be formed, space between the bones forming knee joints may be reduced. Patient suffers excruciating pain, stiffness and disability. As the diseases advances locking, unlocking and rotational movements are also lost. Structures which hold the knee joints also lose their competence. Tendons become less flexible, muscles harden. There are so many options which may temporarily reduce the knee pain. Until structural correction is achieved one cannot get permanent relief in knee joint Osteo-Arthritis.

Manipulative therapy aims at-
Release of chronic tension of muscles, ligaments and tendons forming knees, ankle joints and hip joints. Recalibration of muscles with their relationship, and
Realignment of bones. The following goals are achieved-
Relief in pain
Disability and
Stiffness. Patient may lead healthy life. After the structural correction patient is advised for exercises which may strengthen the muscles. During treatment patient may take pain relief support. In correction very simple tools like straps and ropes are used."

The pain would go away with some supplements like shark's cartilage or berry supplements. After a few years nothing was helping and I had difficulty going down stairs, also up but less. Other than that I could walk normally and even run. The doctors all told me that there was nothing to be done, I would have to be on medication for a number of years and then have an operation.

I am 53 years old now and have been pain free for 5 1/2 years. How? Someone told me about a health store in Portugal which had a doctor. I went there and he advised me to use hot sand on my knee which was quite troublesome because I never went to the beach. Then he tried some electrodes and told me to go back a week later. Again he tried the same electrodes and after that another kind which hurt quite a bit. The next day I was almost pain free, left for France, spent quite a bit of time in the sun and the pain disappeared. Till today I have never had any knee complaints again! Maybe it comes back but well, I have gained quite a few years! By the way, I was never overweight and am an energetic person but never did too much exercise."

01/02/2011: Mesem from Touloon, France replies: "This is really interesting but could you please give more detail about what you did with the sand (sat on beach or heated it in oven, iron sand or silicious?). Also more about electrode treatment? I think other readers would appreciate more detail, even name of health store in Portugal."
01/02/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi again Mesem, I never tried the sand but the doctor told me that I would have to warm it up in a pan and then put it in a cotton bag (he was going to bring me some from the beach but he never did because then he decided on the other treatment). I have no idea what electrodes he used but I know that he repeated the first ones on the second session and then used others, more painful ones. Here is the name and address of the shop: Alegria & Chaveiro Lda Avenida 25 de Abril 208c - Pontinha. Phone number: 00351 21 478 53 42. It is located near Lisbon, easy access by underground and the doctor did his studies in Cuba where he still goes from time to time."

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  03/25/2010: Salty Waters from Vancouver, Bc, Canada writes: "I'm very glad I've found this site (Earth Clinic) and I want to thank Ted and everybody who have posted their experiences here for others to read.

Now it's my turn to report mine. I've got good news!

Last year (2009) in July I've built a fence around my yard all by my self. It was quite a hard job for one man show with all the digging, lifting, sawing, and hammering but the job was done in a week or so. That was the beginning of my osteoarthritis pain in my hands - I'm not gonna get into detail how the pain was because the ones who have it know how horrible it is.

Of course I had to wait almost 10 months for a booked appointment with a specialist (rheumathologist) to tell me what I've suspected from the beginning, and what was that for if he didn't have any solution for it.

Here is what I've been doing so far - I've started right after some search and research - and it seems to keep the pain away:

I've stopped consuming dairy products. No milk or cheese, thanks! Got soy! :-)

I've stopped consuming meat and fish. I'll pass thanks! Eat Tofu! It tastes like chicken. :-)

The reason I've stopped consuming the above is because these days these products are no longer safe due to man's mass production GMO everything. I guess I've become a vegetarian but you know what: I guess I like it and it's helping me.

Another thing is: everything I eat now is organic. No more GMO products. And according to my books I'm not spending more money because of that.

I've been using Wild Oregano Oil (10 -12 droplets) mixed with Olive Oil (1 Tablespoon) to rub and massage my hands. Wow what a great way to get rid of the pain. It works so well and almost instantly.

I've been taking the Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda on a glass of water 3 times a day like Ted says for the last 3 months.

I didn't notice much it's effects until a couple weeks ago I added a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to the mix and started warming up the water - I've got the idea from the water cure website and I decided to add it to the mix.

Boy, oh, boy... what a difference that made. I could feel in a few minutes it's power in action. It seems like magic. It works great for me!

I've been doing Oil Pulling too. I'm not so sure about this one but I still do it every morning - Where there's a will there's a way!

I'm not saying I'm cured. But for sure it's keeping the pain away! And maybe with the time. Who knows!

A year from now I'll be back here for an update! I hope with better news or if not these ones are still good for me.

Anyhow I hope this can help others too and if so I would be glad to see their experiences posted in this wonderful site."

ORGANIC BROCCOLI

[YEA]  12/05/2007: G. Michael from Reading, PA writes: "I am writing a book on natural cures that the Lord has guided me to write. About 4 years ago I was watching Gary Null on P.B.S. talk about the value of eating organic foods. It seemed reasonable to do since organic foods aren't sprayed with pesticides and also, the soil is richer becuase of the rotation of crops and not using chemicals in the soil. So, I decided to start eating organic broccoli every day. Also ,at that time I had osteoarthritis in both of my knees. I was already eating regular broccoli so it was easy for me to make the switch. A month later after eating the organic broccoli daily, my two sore knees were no longer sore. Praise The Lord! I started telling everyone who had sore joints about this marvelous treatment. It didn't matter what joints were involved, the broccoli would get rid of the pain. I have a friend who told me that she had two very sore ankles for about a year for which her doctor had prescribed pain medication but the pain medication didnt work. I told her about the broccoli and before she tried it she asked her doctor what he thought about eating organic broccoli to get rid of her pain. He rediculed the idea. She decided to ignore his reaction and do the broccoli. Three days later, the pain the gone. Praise The Lord! Also, her husband had two sore shoulders and he was skeptical about the broccoli getting rid of her pain. But after he saw the quick results for her he decided to do the broccoli. Within a short time his shoulers were pain-free."

[YEA]  02/16/2010: Trish from Dusseldorf, Nrw, Germany replies: "I tried organic brocolli and it cured my shoulder-arm pain, severe lower back pain and knee pain in 3 days. Every winter I have been suffering from these pains for years. I read the cure posted by G. Michael and since I had some organic brocilli at home I decided to give it a try. I had it raw, one small brocolli head per day and after 3 days the pain is gone!!!! And i have had these pains for years! They come every winter and get better in the summer... I am frankly quite shocked because I was pretty skeptical.

Thanks G. Michael ...may God bless you!"

QUESTION

09/02/2011: Antied77 from Alexandria, Va, Usa writes: "Hello,

I am new to this forum and looking for some assistance in understanding the threads. I am a 34 year old woman with severe osteoarthritis in my knees due to a malalignment that wore away the cartilage. I have no cartilage left in one knee. I am suspicious of bacterial infections too (nano bacteria). I've read the threads here and there seems to be a lot of treatment options but I am unclear on what to try because I've read about magenesium, bitter cherry, borax, disodium EDTA, citric acid, baking soda, lecithin, devil's claw, etc. Can someone please explain to me very clearly on how I can try to kill the nano bacteria safely as well as help with the pain? I'm interested in the treatment with borax and disodium EDTA but as confused, particularly because disodium EDTA appears to be toxic. Thank you in advance!"

My husband started on joint supplement of glucosamine condroitan MSM hyraluronic acid and in about five months his knees were healed. I found it helpful for my bad back as well. He is now 69 and still knees are ok! He walks treadmill at Y and normal activities and no knee problems. Hope you will try it before giving in to surgery."
09/08/2011: Antied77 from Alexandria, Va replies: "Thank you for your feedback. I actually have already had surgery and am also bone on bone. They say my only option is to replace my knees but will not due to my age. I guess they have some age range that is too young!! ?! It's beyong me. I looked into the hydraluric acid. Maybe I'll give that a shot. I couldn't find much information on it. I've taken glucosomine and chondroitin and MSM over the years with no success. Do you know what brand he takes?"
