Remedies to Cure Menstrual Issues
"Menstruation is a condition of women in which the uterine lining (endometrium) is shed. Overt menstruation (where there is bleeding from the vagina) occurs primarily in humans and genetically similar animals such as chimpanzees. The females of other species of placental mammal have estrous cycles, in which the endometrium is reabsorbed by the animal (covert menstruation) at the end of its reproductive cycle.
Eumenorrhea denotes normal, regular menstruation that lasts for a few days (usually 3 to 5 days, but anywhere from 2 to 7 days is considered normal). The average blood loss during menstruation is 35 millilitres with 10-80 mL considered normal; many females also notice shedding of the endometrium lining that appears as tissue mixed with the blood. An enzyme called plasmin ? contained in the endometrium ? tends to inhibit the blood from clotting. Because of this blood loss, women have higher dietary requirements for iron to prevent iron deficiency. Many women experience uterine cramps, also referred to as dysmenorrhea, during this time." [YEA] 10/27/2008: Crista from Pekin, Illinois writes: "Apple Cider Vinegar for Menstral Cramps
I actually was taking the ACV for my sinuses and it ended up helping me with my cramps. I was still very tired and used a heating pad cause my back was aching, but not to the point of needing to take main medicine like I always have had to before. Usually my cramps make it so hard to concentrate on anything, and I just lay around for a day. I am in college and i was able to do my homework without problems because the pain was hardly there. I don't take ACV 3 times a day. I just started two weeks ago using it and I just use about 3 tablespoons of ACV and 3 tablespoons of honey in a tall coffee mug so about a 16 ounce container. I bet it I used it more it would have helped even more, but my husband doesn't like the smell of the vinegar so much :-) It is also clearing my sinuses quite nicely. I think I may be stopping my nasacort for my Rhrinitis soon. The ACV seems to work better, and I am starting to really like the taste."

[YEA] 10/06/2008: Jill from Suburban Chicago, IL writes: "I would like to share my experince with Apple Cider VInegar (remedy):
I am 50 years old and had been experiencing flooding (term I was unaware of until my OB/GYN used this label for extremely excessive menstrual and mid-cycle bleeding) for about 6 months. I was bleeding 6 months STRAIGHT, without stop.... to the point where use of a maximum-flow tampon would not inhibit blood from running down to the floor, 5 or 6 times a day. It was just horrible. I was searching on-line for a solution to this demoralizing, debilitating problem, when I came upon references to ACV as a remedy for excessive bleeding.
I started the next morning: 2 T ACV mixed with 1/2 cup water or orange juice, quickly sipped down with a straw, then followed immediately by a full glass of water. I mention these practices specifically, because you'll want to drink the vinegar as quickly as possible, and then, be certain you have rinsed it all down your throat and diluted it in your tummy. (vinegar is so acidic that you need to protect your teeth, throat, and tummy).
I am sorry to frighten you with the preceeding warnings, but they're important precautions to take. However, it is worth drinking ACV, and being careful about it, too, because I found that it entirely stopped the flooding problem I had been experiencing. About a month ago, I became complacent, and missed an entire day of using the ACV, and I immediately had break-through bleeding the next day. So, I started faithfully right back on my routine of 3x a day, and NO MORE BLEEDING PROBLEMS FOR ME! That brief day when I got lazy and stopped using the AVC, and the immediate relief I found when I started using it again, are sufficient to keep me using ACV.
I have never been any sort of holistic/organic/folk person when it came to making decisions about medical care... but I certainly have changed my mind, now!
Good luck to anyone who tries this- I hope you have the success that I have had!"

[YEA] 09/27/2008: Amy from Marietta, Georgia writes: "I read on your site that ACV was great for bloating, PMS, and menstrual cramps. So, in the morning and at night I began drinking 1 tablespoon ACV in 8 oz. water with honey or agave nectar to sweeten. Bloating was gone within 1 day. A couple of weeks later, I had no cramps with my period, and the bleeding only lasted 3 days. Usually, I have to take ibuprofen for one day b/c of cramping and general pelvic pain.
The next month, I forgot to keep up with the ACV (it's not something I crave!), and it was one of the most painful 3 days of a period I've had in a very long time. So, I remembered the ACV treatment the next month. My period sneaked up on me again. No pain at all. I only use the natural ACV with the "Mother". It helps to mix up a couple of quarts at a time and keep it in the refrigerator."

I monthly chart and know what's been going on for years in my cycle. I have been taking ACV for a little over a week, and for the first time, my ovulatory pain was walkable and only an hour. . .as opposed to a day in bed. Plus, it was less than 1 week after my period, instead of 2 weeks plus. This is crazy! I also have taken molasses for period pain, but not for long and then I ran out after less than a week. I may have found it helped with my infertility as well, but I figured I needed to heal from my last misscarriage before attempting again. We will see next month, and what my next period will be like (usually another day in bed). . .will keep you posted."

[YEA] 09/29/2007: Kelly from Jacksonville, FL writes: "I found this website when looking for a home remedy for my prolonged menstrual bleeding. I was getting my period for 3 moths or more at a time. I have PCOS and before, I had to take progestrone to make me get my periods so I could get pregnant. Once my son was born, I had the opposite problem and couldn't stop bleeding. I bled very very heavily for months on end, feeling tired and weak. Also just feeling disgusting, and it was causing some feelings of dissappointment because my husband and I weren't able to share any intimate time because of my constant bleeding. So I read this website and thought to myself, I doubt this will work, but let's try it anyway. To my complete amazement within 1 week of trying this I stopped bleeding completely! It's been 1 week now with no period at all, not even spotting! (which is a miracle because I wa constantly spotting inbetween). I've been taking it for 2 weeks now. I am also surprised, the taste isn't bad at all. I expected it to taste disgusting, but it's really not bad.
Another amazing surprise, my sister said it looks like I've lost some weight, so I got on the scale today expecting little or no loss at all, but I was SHOCKED when I saw I'd lost 18 lbs! WOW! This product is fantastic and I'd reccomend it to anyone!"

[YEA] 11/12/2008: Nancy from Northern, IA writes: "At the end of August my menstrual cycle lasted 3 weeks and the flow was three times as heavyas normal. The Dr. said I had "huge" fibroids and an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. They said some of my options were a hysterectomy or trying birth control pills. I found earthclinic instead.
Thanks to the advice on earthclinic, I decided to try the molasses trick. Our grocery store didn't carry the blackstrap--so I thought I'd wait until I got somewhere that did. After only 1 week off--I got my cycle again. On the 2nd day it was abnormally heavy again--I thought --shoot, I'll try the regular stuff, and bought the regular molasses-mild and unsulphered. I took 1 TBSP.
Was it coincidence that it worked instantly? Was it conincidence that the cramping dissapeared? Was it conincidence that my next 2 cycles were right on schedule and back to normal? More importantly, was it coincidence that my follow up ultra-sound showed that the cyst had dissolved and the fibroids were now classified as large-rather than huge? I don't know--but for $2.50 per month (the cost of the bottle and how long it lasted) I will definately continue with taking 1 TBSP per day coincidence or not!!"

10/29/2008: KD from Cincinnati, Ohio writes: "I haven't tried the molasses remedy yet but I found it odd that for some reason I bought some Blackstrap Molasses at the store the other day without ever reading this site! I decided to use it in my baked beans last night. I wasn't sure that I liked it but it was a taste I could probably get used to. This evening I Googled a cure to slow down menstral bleeding and came upon this site. I was immediately drawn to the blackstrap molasses feedbacks. What a coincidence that I just happen to have some. I think the body must tell us what it needs if we listen to it. For some reason I bought ginger root too. When my mother was dying from cancer she kept asking for blueberries. One of the last things we did before she got sick was make blueberry jam. I know the body sometimes craves sugar and fat and things that are not good for it but if we listen to it, it will tell us the good things it needs as well. It was too late for my mom but her body was looking for something to fight the cancer with so she craved the blueberries. I believe there is something to learn from this in preventive measures to assist the body. I am going to try this blackstrap molasses and the ginger root and I will report back. I am so glad that I found all of these testimonies. It is very encouraging. Thank you!!!"

[NAY] 10/21/2008: Lori from northwest, Iowa writes: "I tried blackstrap molasses (the Brer' Rabbit brand) to try and lighten and shorten my periods. I took one tablespoon daily (in the morning), dissolved it in a little warm water, and topped off with 8 oz. of milk. I actually enjoy the taste, so keeping up with it was not a problem. When my period started, I took the aforementioned concoction twice a day (once in the morning and once at night). The first thing I noticed was that I began spotting. Not a lot, but faintly at least once each week between my periods. When my period started, it was heavier than normal. What is really strange is around the second day, all flow stopped, and I believed that the blackstrap was working. Then, a whole day passed without any flow, but by the next day, my period had returned with heavy flow again. I was really hoping that blackstrap would work for me. It seems that the other posters here had almost instantaneous results."

Also, I cann't find BLACKSTRAP, but did find UNSULPHURED. Is it the same?"
09/13/2008: JB from Somewhere, Maryland replies: "I think it's very normal for a 13 year old to skip periods. I have an older teen, and although she began menstruating at the age of 12, it was about 2 or 3 years before it became a "regular cycle." I, too, was concerned since I run just about like clockwork myself. But I did some reading on the subject, and it's very common, in fact, more normal than not. Really, I had forgotten that I, too, as a young teen didn't have a predictable cycle. Other than that, blackstrap molasses certainly shouldn't hurt your daughter, but it may not "regulate" her either-- just a growing thing, I think."

But as I have gotten older the attack that ibuprofen has had on my body over the years has started to weaken its defenses. I am going to stop taking it but does anyone have any suggestions as what I can take for painful period cramps that won't irritate my acid reflux or cause another sympton to come up?"
Hey, if you want my opinion, and want to see what others have said too, look up the wonders of molasses on this site. It seems to be helping lots of people including myself with very painful menstral cramps. (1-2 T. full a day is what I've read.) Much as I'm sure the birth control pills would probably work, they too are a drug! They mess with the delacate hormone balance and tend to cause estrogen dominance, leading to mood and other physical problems. Not to mention, if you're like me and want more "blessings from above", that is a really bad suggestion. No offense to the person who said it, but it just may not be for everyone."

[YEA] 04/25/2008: Diane (diane@insight.rr.com) from New Albany, Ohio writes: "I am 51 years old and for the past year I have been experiencing very heavy menstrual bleeding.February 29th I was taken to the hospital by ambulance due to how heavy the bleeding was. I was diagnosed with anemia and the ER doc did see something resembling a cauliflower growth on the cervix. I am going to be having pelvic ultrasound and probably other tests this week. During the lapse of time between that ER visit and this apppointment next week I have been out of state taking care of a sick parent and put off tests which I know is bad. I found this website when trying to figure out what I can do to get the bleeding under control until I this is diagnosed. I have been taking 1 tablespoon of unsulphured blackstrap molasses per day from the day my period ends until 10 days beofre another one is due to start. At that point 10 days before and during the period I take 1 tablespoon in the morning and 1 in the early evening. I take it straight and just drink lots of water after. I am pleased to report that the bleeding is probably half of what it was. I have had two realatively easy periods now. The only down side I can report is that my stools are slightly loose and very black by the time I have doubled that dose for 10 days. I am assuming this is from the mineral content. My stools return to normal as soon as I go back down to 1 tablespoon. I would also like to add that long before my periods became so problematic that I had become housebound for the duration I had seen eraly symptoms that there is something wrong. Three years ago I started to have night sweats. Over a period of 3 years I lost 10 pounds without trying. My body composition changed dramatically from very muscular to flacid. I went to my physician who ran tests and found nothing to be wrong. In the years to follow I was going through a very difficult time in my marriage and the stress was unbelievable. I develped a tic in my eye, I started having anxiety attacks. I have had mysterious aches and pains all over and finally my periods became very heavy. I sought help from physicains 4 times over a period of 3 years and all 3 physicians thought I looked too good to be sick and ran just a few tests which did not show any problems. They concluded that it was due to the severe stress and suggested leaving the marraige and getting professional counseling. I know my body and my intuition was telling me there is something wrong but I ignored it probably because I wanted to believe the physicians were right. Now I hope this is not cancer and strictly due to either perimenopause or fibroids. I have periods every month right on schedule every 28 days. "
