DIETARY SUGGESTIONS

[YEA]  01/04/2007: Diane from Long Beach, NY writes: "I used to eat a high fiber, low fat diet (norm robillard's low carb approach). The gas started to build over several months resulting in terrible stomach pains after every evening meal. My cholesterol shot up as well. I decided to get rid of the high fiber breads and cereals. I don't eat dairy. After a few days, my gas decreased and I didn't need my aciphex for gerd anymore. When I cheat, I get gas and reflux. Also, my cholesterol dropped back to normal. My diet is vegetables, some protein, small amounts of fruit, some nuts. I walk almost everyday and use a recumbant bike on rainy days. Sugar in any form is the worst High carbs are sugar. Bread in any form makes my reflux worse. I can cheat but not everyday. I was able to take my bed off its blocks back to ground level and could also lay down after eating."

ELIMINATE BLEACHED FLOUR

YEA

[YEA]  11/20/2007: Joyce from oelton, Tn. writes: "The best remedy I have found for indigestion, acid regurge, GERD, flatulence is elimination of all bleached flour products in the foods you eat - I find I can eat l00% whole grain bread without problems (usually cures most people's constipation problems also). I don't know what chemicals? are used in the bleaching process, but apparently that is where the problem comes from. However, you must really work at getting bleached flour out of your diet, as many pastas are made with bleached flour, many breads say whole wheat but read the ingredients and you'll find that most start off with bleached flour unless the label reads l00% whole grain. Most gravies, dips, sauces, etc. use the cheapest source of thickening agent - bleached flour. So try it and see if it works for you. It's nice having a "cast iron stomach" which has no problems with cayenne pepper, jalapeno peppers, and all that spicy stuff I used to blame my stomach problems on before I lucked up and stumbled upon the real cause of them."

WARNINGS!

[YEA]  07/15/2007: Vaughn from Hempstead, Long Island, New York writes: "I've got a serious gas pocket under my shoulder bone. I think the cause is derived from an h-pylori infection or i maybe associated with my years of acid reflux problem. Since recently i notice that whenever i drink Monster energy drink i feel completely relieved. I can not completely what happens when I drink it, but I burp non-stop until all gas sensation is gone. The feelin of acid reflux immediately stops and I feel revived. I have tried many different carbonated beverages including ginger ail beverage with is known to give this reaction, they just don't match up to the energy drink. It completely relieves my gas or upset stomach."

Replies
[WARNING!]  10/23/2010: Lindsey from Oceanside, Ca replies: "This may work for now but do be careful when drinking energy drinks. I was practically the spokesperson for energy drinks. I drank at least one everyday for years. The acid inside these drinks erode the lining in your stomach (That's what the ER docs told me when I was admitted multiple times for severe stomach pains). Just a little warning."
[WARNING!]  12/30/2010: Genpennstate from Harrisburg, Pa replies: "Warning! Drinking any type of carbonated beverage is NOT suggested for people with acid reflux."

FENNEL SEEDS

[YEA]  09/14/2011: Katherine from Seattle, Wa, Usa writes: "Last night, my brother cooked for me. I drank a little bit of ACV afterwards because I could feel my stomach going funny. Unfortunately, the ACV did not prevent gas. I have no idea what in the meal caused it, but it was quite literally painful. I tried to sleep about an hour after eating and I couldn't because I kept having horrible pains.

Fennel tea, HALLELUJAH!

I just pounded about a teaspoon of the seeds in my morter & pestle, put that into a tea and and poured over freshly boiled water. I also added a tiny tiny bit of honey for sweetness. This actually tasted pretty good, and I could not believe what an immediate affect it had!

I paced my room while drinking it, and while I burped once (the gas was still early in the digestive system), I don't think that got rid of it all. So, I would say that somehow the fennel neutralized the gas. I don't know how it worked, but I had been trying to sleep for like an hour, then after drinking this, managed to fall asleep within about 15 minutes.

I am sooooooooooo thankful. I did wake up later, but when I woke up, I had no pain whatsoever.

My point is, I definitely recommend this!!!"

I tried fennel seed tea because I thought it might work faster than the capsules and it has worked every morning I tried it for over a week now after drinking my two glasses of soy milk which usually give me terrible gas. The taste is great with about 3/4ths of a tsp. of agave syrup. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Angie"

[YEA]  01/11/2008: Cendra from Flint, USA writes: "I use Fennel Seed for gas. I'm lactose intolerant so after eating ice cream or the likes I pop a fennel seed capsule & it stops the gas. You can also purchase the seeds instead of the capsules. They taste like black licorice which isn't my favorite so I bought the capsules. Fennel seeds are commonly used in India to freshen breath & aid in digestion."

[YEA]  12/07/2007: T.S.Rajah from Wimledon, UK writes: "Fenugreek's leafy form belongs to the spinach family. However, its seeds are useful when cooking to combat the flatulence caused by certain foods, such as lentils and cauliflower. Its anti-viral properties mean it also helps against sore throat and mouth ulcers. Historically, fenugreek has been used to treat diabetes and is now thought to reduce blood pressure."

GOLDENSEAL ENEMA

[YEA]  11/16/2008: Mark from Portland, Oregon writes: "Hi, I have found a great gas/bloating remedy. If you put a capsule of golden seal in an enema bag with warm (purified) water, it makes the best enema. At least for me, it makes me go and go until I am completely clean and fresh. I like it much better than coffee, and it really clears my head. I feel like it gives the digestive tract a fresh start and cleanses my blood. This is also a great way to move out hardened waste and therefore lose some excess weight. It also seems to cure constipation which I used to get, but now is very rare, which usually comes on from eating something bad. I just do another enema! Also I do one whenever I feel like I am starting to get sick and if I do it early enough it just goes away. In fact I haven't taken a sick day in over 4 years! It only takes a few minutes to do and then I just jump in the shower. All the benefits of golden seal in a powerful and quicker way."

[YEA]  05/16/2011: Savvyherb from Pittsburgh, Usa writes: "Hi, I'd like to add Oil of Oregano as an amazing remedy for smelly gas. I had tried everything - digestive enzymes, probiotics, betaine (HCL acid), garlic and nothing really worked that well. Or they worked for a while but then stopped working. Now I take a capsule of oil of oregano twice a day with meals. More if I eat a dessert. I've been doing this for over a year and I now rarely have gas. It's truly amazing. But, it may not work on its own - you may need other supplements/diet changes."

PSYLLIUM AND FLAX MEAL

YEA

[YEA]  01/08/2008: Jake from Chicago, Il writes: "whipple operation for duodenal cancer, psyllium, and flax seed meal. After my cancer operation in 1991 I suffered terrible flatulence - gas in both directions. It was a difficult time for several years - my doctors prescribed pancreatic enzymes that were useless. Eventually I realized because of the removal of my duodenum, digestion of oils and fats especially was impeded. I was better avoiding all oils and fats, but that was not a long term solution. My triglycerides were elevated and I was slowly depleting my essential oils and drying out based on my skin condition. Adding back essential oils (flax mixture) brought my tryglicerides back to normal in the first week but my original gaseous problems were still there. Eventually, after 10 years or so, I discovered psyllium seed that cured the condition entirely when I added it mixed in water before major meals - or before oily or in some cases even when I indulged in pig-out foods. My movements still were not perfect and recently, only the last 5 months or so I discovered flax seed meal or powder is even better - not quite as course in elimination and adding substantially more vitamins and nutrients as I understand it. Either of course would be a life saver for anyone else out there who's an outcast because of runaway flatulence."

REMEDIES NEEDED

02/07/2012: Christine O from Maricopa, Az writes: "Hi, love this site, fascinating to read.. You are a God Send.

Had kidney stone attack, fifth one in 4 years. Try to dissolve stone naturally with lemon juice and apple cider vinegar, did for week and a half, still not passed. Got some kidney stone pills at health food store, did and got relief a week or so later.

Decided to go on alkaline diet, Mornings I have a three fruit smoothie, lunch is basically vegetables and maybe cucumbers and celery and hummus. Cut out all gluten products and sugar.

Eat hardly any meat or dairy, maybe some goat milk cheese on the salad. Lost weight, but the bloating in my stomach has come back the last few days. Started on some Unsulfured organic blackstrap molassed a few days back, was hoping to get more calcium into me without eating dairy. Could that be the culprit? Also started eating bananas in my smoothies in the morning. I have had a bloated stomach since I was 17, I am 58 now.

I also do proper food combining now, but I am still bloating, do you have any suggestions? I have been following diet tips from a nutritionist from Africa who advocates eating lots of fruits, just make sure you eat with nothing else. You mentioned in one of your replies you did not believe we were made to eat fruit, because body can't handle all fructose, so I am really confused. I would love to hear any suggestions, this belly bloat is driving me nuts, I really thought eating this healthy would take care of it. God Bless"

Read the thread on Sea Salt Cures right here on EC for more info on this."

02/08/2012: Tina from Houston, Usa replies: "Fruit in limited quantities is ok for health, but too much fructose overtaxes the pancreas causing surge of insulin which no one needs.

1 fruit 2 hours in between meals is ok.

For bloating specifically, consider consuming papayas, probiotics of very good quality (I especially like ReNew Life products specific strains made for bloating), sauerkraut and other lacto-fermented veggies several times daily, spirulina & chorella to keep the liver clean. Start the day with FRESH organic veggie juice made with cucumbers, celery, parsley, mint, ginger and lemon.

You can google lacto-fermedted veggies, easy to make and extremely nutritious in resetting your gut.

Additionally herbal teas made by boiling the following ingredients (INDIVIDUALLY) is great for bloating issues:

- Fenugreek

- Mint

- Anise Seed

- Licorice

- Ginger

Hope this helps.

Search on the internet how to do a liver flush."
02/08/2012: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "Hi Christine O from Maricopa, I too have suffered with the stomach bloat and found there were a few culprits which I have since removed from my diet.

1. Bananas - which I was eating daily since forever. I love and miss them but can't go back.

2. Popcorn - of any kind. Organic air popped or microwavable.

3. Dairy - I don't eat alot but I love cheese. But it is mostly yogurt that gives me issues. I can't take probiotics without issues either. I have heard that if you take them for a few weeks the bloat will go away though I am to chicken to try.

4. Lettuce - for some reason having had my gallbladder removed made it almost impossible to digest lettuce and other leafy greens.

5. Soda/Pop - any fizzy drink really makes my stomach blow up.

Fruits and veggies will give you gas no matter how much you eat but some people need a little extra help to digest them. I find that if I take digestive enzymes I can handle alot of things including some of the things listed above. I think everyone is different. Our intestines have different bacteria that reacts differently with certain foods. Maybe you could try cleansing your intestines with an enema. I find that if I fast every few months my intestines seem to settle down for a bit. But mostly I try to stay away from the foods listed above."

10/12/2011: Beryl from London, England writes: "Hi

I would appreciate some help with the health problems I am currently experiencing. Years ago I gave birth to two children. They were both delivered by caesarian section. After the births I began experiencing a lot of trapped wind which I would get rid of my stretching and twisting and burping. This would sometimes go on for half an hour or so. Sometimes it would take being sick to get rid of it. Then for a number of years it ceased to be a problem.

Approximately three years ago I woke up in the middle of the night with the most horrendous vertigo and vomiting. I was finally retching and bringing nothing up. The doctor was called and he diagnosed labrinthytis. After this my confidence just went. I was so dizzy upon rising and when walking I would keel over without clinging onto the furniture. I saw a chiropractor for six months for twice a week therapy, and this helped a little. But the vertigo has persisted. I've had tests done at the hospital, and they could not give me a definitive answer. Even an MRI scan. Some suggestions are BPPV and that the bones at the top of my spine are closing together. But I feel that it is to some degree linked to stomach problems, but when I mention it to the doctors they discount the suggestion. One doctor did concede that I could have lesions from the caesarian operations.

Many mornings I get up feeling very dizzy and wanting to keel over. This morning was a particularly bad one. So I started stretching and massaging my stomach and belched for over an hour, and began to feel better. But why is all this gas occurring? I do have a very healthy diet. I eat a lot of fish and loads of vegetables, but it seems to happen whatever I eat. And my diet does vary from time to time. I've tried cutting out bread, because I sometimes feel that I am allergic to it, but my problems still persist.

I would appreciate any help.

Best wishes"

I had a lot of help for problems after my 5th child. That was 12 years ago now. My stomach would not go down and I had the worst bloating whenever I would eat. After 3 years, I finally went to a Traditional Chinese Medicine Dr. because no matter how much exercise and diet change, nothing! This was not the reason I was going for though. Interestingly enough, after about 4 sessions my stomach was flat, I had a waist again and I no longer bloated after eating. I hope this helps!"
10/13/2011: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Beryl, you didn't mention having ever done any kind of detox or colon cleansing. So many things influence digestion that it could take yrs to find your cure, but begin with detoxing. Oral bentonite clay will help for sure. I am a big believer in healing magnets. I sleep on a magnetic pad at night and wear a belt during the day. I rotate the belt to: liver, colon, spleen, and stomoch. The magnets remove bad energy, inflammation, and promote healing. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress."
10/13/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Beryl - One of the recent books I borrowed from the library is Digestive Wellness by Elizabeth Lipski. She mentions that healing options for intestinal gas include: chewing your food well and eating slowly, increasing fiber gradually, supplementing with probiotics, using digestive enzymes, exploring food sensitivities (including lactose intolerance), not chewing gum, avoiding alcohol sugars (sorbitol, maltitol, etc. ), taking chlorophyll, using ginger, fennel and anise (eg, put 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger in a cup of boiling water - let steep until cool enough to drink), using activated charcoal tablets. Try one at a time and see if it makes a difference. If you have a rebounder (mini-trampoline), the jumping tends to promote gas release and it's good to get the lymph fluid moving.

She also said if the simple measures above don't work, get the following lab tests done: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth test, organic acid testing, comprehensive digestive stool analysis with parasitology, IgE and IgG allergy testing. One of her patients had parasites which caused excessive gas. Once he was treated, no more gas (well, no more than usual and it is usual to pass gas - supposedly 10 to 15 times a day).

Good luck - I hope some of these tips work for you. Cheers, Bess"

11/02/2011: Tony from Streator, Illinois replies: "Hi Beryl, it sounds like you and I have the same problem I had colorectal cancer surgery 3 years ago and adhesions formed around my small intestions causing tremedous pains usually when I am less active such as during chemo or radiation treatments. Mayo clinic told me I would have to put up with it until it got bad enough to do surgery lol wich causes more adhesion. Also, I have been trying to work on this myself and have been good since April. Then 2 weeks ago, had radiation and fatigue set in and wouldn't you know it it happened again- my pains and discomfort last approx 12 hrs after throwing up what is left in my stomach and laying in bed tossing and turning. It finally subsides. My stomach sounds like a thunderstorm right now. I do know when the noises stop that means a blockage is coming. I hope this has helped- feel free to contact me if any questions."
01/21/2012: David from London, Uk replies: "Hi, Beryl you ask what is causing you wind (gas) problem, I have had trapped gas (wind) twice in my life (OMG what pain), and found one time it was caused by severe constipation, but more importantly for me the second time I wasnt constipated, but I had for some time been wearing my trouser belt to tight and I'm convinced it was this.... hope this may be of some help."

ROSEMARY TEA

Anyone have any knowledge on this?"

06/21/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "clj5775, bloating and gas is usually a sign that you are not digesting food properly. It is fermenting in your stomach. Probiotics (acidophilus) and digestive enzymes would be better than rosemary as it will help stop the problem occurring in the first place.

Milk also causes bloating and gas because pasteurisation has removed the enzymes needed for digestion. The probiotics and digestive enzymes help with that as well.

Bloating and gas may also be a sign of candida."

[YEA]  07/27/2009: Don from Southwest, Michigan writes: "Stomach Pain and/or Gas

Strawberries.

For any kind of stomach ache, gas pain, heart burn or stomach upset of any kind, I eat 4-6 frozen strawberries and the discomfort is gone instantly. This remedy has worked 100% of the time for me for many years. It has also worked 100% of the time for everyone I have told. My mother is 89 and takes several medications and supplements and sometimes gets terrible stomach pains and gas. She ate 5 frozen strawberries and by the time she ate the last one her pain and gas had disappeared. She is a devout skeptic and was amazed at the results.

I have tried this with many different varieties of strawberries and they all work. My favorite here in southwest Michigan is called Early Glow and we freeze about 60 qt. every year. Just hull the "caps", rinse in water, let drain in a colander and put into whatever size plastic freezer bag you prefer. Even if they are out of season in your area and you have to pay a higher price at a super market, get at least one qt. to keep in the freezer. When you get a stomach ache eat 4-6 of them and your pain should disappear.

I hope this helps you stop wasting money on expensive, super hyped, over the counter upset stomach chemicals that in my opinion just do not work and always made me feel worse.

Best Wishes For A Peaceful Future
