Gas Remedies

"Flatulence is the presence of a mixture of gases in the digestive tract of mammals. Such a mixture of gases is known as flatus, and is expelled from the rectum in a process also known as flatulence, or as 'breaking wind' or 'farting'.

Flatus is expelled under pressure through the anus, whereby, as a result of the voluntary or involuntary relaxation of the anal sphincter, the rapid evacuation of gases from the lower intestine occurs. Essentially this happens when the flatus pressure inside the rectum exceeds the anal sphincter's ability to restrain it. Depending upon the relative state of the sphincter (relaxed/tense) and the positions of the buttocks, this often results in a crackling or trumpeting sound, but gas can also be passed quietly. The olfactory components of flatulence include skatole, indole, and sulfurous compounds. The non-odorous gases are mainly nitrogen (ingested), carbon dioxide (produced by aerobic microbes or ingested), and hydrogen (produced by some microbes), as well as lesser amounts of oxygen (ingested) and methane (produced by anaerobic microbes)." 3 YEA

[YEA]  10/16/2008: Karina from San Francisco, California writes: "For GAS the best thing is to buy CHARCOAL PILLS ..they have coated (pink) and uncoted (black) its not medicine..its staright powder charcoal. take 2 at once. [YEA]  03/04/2008: Sharon from Santa Fe, NM writes: "After menopause, I seemed to be bloated in my midsection most of the time. My lower stomach was puffy most of the time. I'm a thin person, and thought this was weight gain due to menopause & quitting smoking. Ond day I took 2 activated charcoal capsules for gas, and I ended up spending a lot of time in the bathroom that day. By that evening, I realized that my stomach was flat again! I figured that the charcoal had detoxified my system!! I will continue to take the charcoal once or twice weekly now. I am extremely happy with the results!!"

[YEA]  09/07/2008: Heidi from Ogden, UT writes: "Whenever anyone in the family has gas, we pop a tsp of anise seed into the mouth and chew it thoroughly, swallow it. It will completely stop the gassiness, and very quickly, too. I don't have exact measurements, but I'd say 1/2 teaspoon of whole seed. Chewing it thoroughly is important, and swallow it."

[YEA]  11/13/2007: Tracy from Delray Beach , Florida writes: "ACV took away my (gas) pain! I, too, suffer from terrible gas -- just about everything in my heathy diet gives me a problem. Have tried many other things, such as Beano, Gas-X, etc. Nothing really made much difference. Decided to try the ACV, and have noticed a remarkable improvement in just one week: hardly any gas pains, rumbling noises, bloating -- just a little amount (normal) of flatulence in the a.m. I take a couple of tablespoons after meals, straight out of the bottle."

I started using apple cidar vinegar to help with digestion since some of my gas didn't go away with cutting back the fast food. The Apple Cidar Vinegar really helps with these symptoms. I take 2 tbsp in the morning after breakfast, 2 after lunch and 2 or 3 tbsp before bed. I know it's alot but I now don't have strange noises coming from my stomache region while out in public."

Everything that I ate gave me gas. I noticed in the very same day that I took the ACV my gas pains have disappeared. However, one of my tooth that has multiple fillings is hurting me. Now I understand why. I will just use a straw. I love my ACV. I am trying to loose weight also."

It burned my throat, my esophogus, and stomach sooooo bad! After I realized I wasn't going to die (ha ha) I started to relax. Later in the evening I kept thinking...What is this feeling I'm feeling? I realized it was what I wasn't feeling...heartburn, gas and muscle pain. I might try it again...this time diluted of course."

BITTERS

3 YEA

[YEA]  10/02/2007: brett from Brooklyn, New York writes: "RE: Cure Gas Fast Angostura bitters remedy... I'm a night club dj. On several occasions I've gotten terrible stomach pain just before a gig at a bar. When I say terrible stomach pain, I mean eye watering, agonizing pain that comes in waves. Sometimes it feels like my stomach is in a knot and other times like it's being ripped apart. I've asked bartenders what I should drink. A few have suggested bitters. I'm not sure if this is the same as Angostura bitters, but it's the only thing I remember working. Generally after drinking something with bitters, my pain goes away in an hour or so. Without the bitters, I'm in pain all night and sometimes for a day or two after."

[YEA]  05/01/2007: Wayne from Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies writes: "Hi All: I'm from the island of Trinidad in the West Indies. Since I was a child, one of the standard remedies for alimentary disturbances - belly aches, gas etc. - has been a few dashes of Angostura bitters (AB) in a little cool water. AB is made only in Trinidad but is famous worldwide as a beverage taste enhancer. However, it was originally developed by a famous German doctor to treat his wartime patients for alimentary disturbances. Locally it is still used for same especially by "olden" folk. You can look it up yourself on the net. Regards"

DIETARY SUGGESTIONS

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/04/2007: Diane from Long Beach, NY writes: "I used to eat a high fiber, low fat diet (norm robillard's low carb approach). The gas started to build over several months resulting in terrible stomach pains after every evening meal. My cholesterol shot up as well. I decided to get rid of the high fiber breads and cereals. I don't eat dairy. After a few days, my gas decreased and I didn't need my aciphex for gerd anymore. When I cheat, I get gas and reflux. Also, my cholesterol dropped back to normal. My diet is vegetables, some protein, small amounts of fruit, some nuts. I walk almost everyday and use a recumbant bike on rainy days. Sugar in any form is the worst High carbs are sugar. Bread in any form makes my reflux worse. I can cheat but not everyday. I was able to take my bed off its blocks back to ground level and could also lay down after eating."

ELIMINATE BLEACHED FLOUR

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/20/2007: Joyce from oelton, Tn. writes: "The best remedy I have found for indigestion, acid regurge, GERD, flatulence is elimination of all bleached flour products in the foods you eat - I find I can eat l00% whole grain bread without problems (usually cures most people's constipation problems also). I don't know what chemicals? are used in the bleaching process, but apparently that is where the problem comes from. However, you must really work at getting bleached flour out of your diet, as many pastas are made with bleached flour, many breads say whole wheat but read the ingredients and you'll find that most start off with bleached flour unless the label reads l00% whole grain. Most gravies, dips, sauces, etc. use the cheapest source of thickening agent - bleached flour. So try it and see if it works for you. It's nice having a "cast iron stomach" which has no problems with cayenne pepper, jalapeno peppers, and all that spicy stuff I used to blame my stomach problems on before I lucked up and stumbled upon the real cause of them."

ENERGY DRINK

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/15/2007: Vaughn from Hempstead, Long Island, New York writes: "I've got a serious gas pocket under my shoulder bone. I think the cause is derived from an h-pylori infection or i maybe associated with my years of acid reflux problem. Since recently i notice that whenever i drink Monster energy drink i feel completely relieved. I can not completely what happens when I drink it, but I burp non-stop until all gas sensation is gone. The feelin of acid reflux immediately stops and I feel revived. I have tried many different carbonated beverages including ginger ail beverage with is known to give this reaction, they just don't match up to the energy drink. It completely relieves my gas or upset stomach."

FENNEL SEEDS

[YEA]  04/21/2009: angie from south pasadena, california writes: "Thanks so much to the person who recommended fennel seeds! I tried fennel seed tea because I thought it might work faster than the capsules and it has worked every morning I tried it for over a week now after drinking my two glasses of soy milk which usually give me terrible gas. The taste is great with about 3/4ths of a tsp. of agave syrup. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Angie"

[YEA]  01/11/2008: Cendra from Flint, USA writes: "I use Fennel Seed for gas. I'm lactose intolerant so after eating ice cream or the likes I pop a fennel seed capsule & it stops the gas. You can also purchase the seeds instead of the capsules. They taste like black licorice which isn't my favorite so I bought the capsules. Fennel seeds are commonly used in India to freshen breath & aid in digestion."
