[YEA] 11/21/2007: Julie from Seattle, WA writes: "I've had moderately severe seborrheic dermitis of my face, scalp since puberty, and in the 15 years since then, I have seen 4 dermatologists and tried every OTC dandruff/sd shampoo and every prescription cream, corticosteroids, etc. My facial skin was always red, inflamed or recovering from a flare up, or about to have another one. I really believed that I would always have to deal with this. On your site, I read about treating my skin with a cottonball of ACV. I tried it, it stung the skin until it dried. But immediately there seemed to be a benefit. After 3 days, my skin looked noticeably better and was soft and the inflammation went away. My skin completely quit flaking. I do treat it with a cottonball of ACV at least once a day it has successfully treated my problem since the first day I used it, 6/11/07, about 5 months straight! I've NEVER had anything work like this. It is almost unbelievable. My theory is the ACV kills the microscopic fungus that likes my chemistry on my skin. If I skip ACV for several days, I notice my skin slowly starts to get red and flaky again. ACV stings the most over the "flared up" areas, barely at all on healthy skin. I can't say enough about how thrilled I am about ACV for SD."

[YEA] 09/12/2007: DZ from CT writes: "I have had seb derm in the creases at the side of my nose for the last 15 years, on and off, mostly on. The doctors all prescribed steroid creams and antibiotic lotions, which worked temporarily. 2 weeks ago I decided to give apple cider vinegar a go. I stuck a clean q-tip in my bottle of acv and then applied to my clean skin, dabbing all the area around my nose that has the dermatitis. I did this 2x a day for the first day, then 1 more time on day 4. Then I gave it a break. The dermatitis cleared up on day 6 and hasn't yet returned. I no longer look like I always have a cold! The redness that accompanies the dermatitis is almost gone.
I figure I will apply the acv once a week for preventative measures. This is undoubtedly the best treatment I have tried thus far. If it stops it permanently, I will be thrilled. However, in the past the dermatitis flared up after consuming a lot of dairy products, so I always thought it was an internal condition... We shall see! I will report back in a month or so."

[YEA] 02/06/2007: Kim from Westport, MA writes: "My dermatitis skin rash disappeared in 24-48 hours using ACV. I read your site about using apple cider vinegar, the testimonials is what made me start to use it. So I purchased Heinz apple cider vinegar and began drinking 2 tbls in green tea 3 times a day for two days now, and applied topically the vinegar to the affected area and low and behold my skin is smooth to the touch no scales or chapped skin left. I am so amazed! I also notice a boost in energy and an overall sense of well being. I will purchase the _______s version from the health food store so that I receive the whole benefits, but in the short time I have been using this, it's just short of a miracle! If you live with something for years and have tried everything and I mean everything to no avail, and something simple and over the counter (Apple cider vinegar) comes along you try it at least once...and for me the taste isn't too strong, its so worth it! I will keep drinking it and I will also apply some of the other stuff I have read on her like the blackstrap molasses! Thanks Earth Clinic for being here!"

The doctors took pictures and said it was one of the worst cases they had seen. They gave me an Rx for prednisone. Thank God I checked this site first. I applied ACV diluted in purified water to my face 3x per day and it completely cleared up within three days!! I cancelled the Rx. I LOVE ACV, and my skin looks better than when I used all of the expensive creams and lotions."

I have been reading so much about apple cider vinegar and decided to try it. Well, I was also diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and also came the slightly high blood pressure and cholesterol a tad high. I started to take the acv and low and behold, my next bloodwork was the best it has been in 5 yrs. If my next 2 check ups are like this last one I may go off my diabetic and blood pressure pills all together. WOW! Thank you GOD for having the acv at our disposal."

[YEA] 03/16/2006: Michelle from Chandler, AZ writes: "I remember suffering from eczema since I was five years old. Two years ago I found out that I had dermatitis. I went to the doctor and they prescribe me a cream to help it go away and it worked. However, the dermatitis came back six months ago and I have just been using hydrocortisone cream. I would go through a 1 ounce tube of hydrocortisone cream a week and if I didn't have any hydrocortisone cream I would freak out. I first started taking ACV in February after a friend told me that it supports weight loss. After a few days of use I notice that the dermatitis was clearing up and after a week or so it was gone. It would takes months for the dermatitis to clear up with just the hydrocortisone cream alone, but with drinking two tablespoons of ACV with water three times a day, still applying the hydrocortisone cream and eating the right food (like no salt or sodium) it has helped significantly clear up my skin. Not only that but my mom has noticed that my face has really cleared up, my scalp doesn't suffer from dandruff like it use to, I sleep better at nights, and I have a lot more energy. I have dropped bout 15 pounds and I am still losing. It is a great relief to know that this summer for the first time in a long time that I can finally feel comfortable wearing shorts and skirts."

[YEA] Amber from Salt Lake City, Utah writes: "When I turned 19, I started getting a rash on my legs in the heat. Then it gradually got worse in the cold. After I would get out of the shower my rash would get worse. Pretty soon my rash was there all of the time. I went to my Doctor and he gave me medicine -- it didn't work. He referred me to a dermatologist who gave me steroids and antibiotics, and cream. None of it helped my condition. Finally I started taking apple cider vinegar with 8 OZ. of water twice a day. In three days my rash was gone. I couldn't believe the results. I drank 2 TBS of ACV and @ TBS of Virgin Honey. It really worked for me. I have not had any bad effects with my teeth even though I have been taking it for three years."

I had to get a steroid injection & was on oral steroids 3 weeks. It took 3 weeks for the dermatitis to go away. It took 2 months for my skin to return to it's original color. My skin in the healed spots is already my original color."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND HOMEOPATHIC CREAM
[YEA] 03/20/2008: Chloe from Seattle, Wa writes: "At age 52, I had my first "run-in" with perioral dermatitis on 1/1/08. At first I didn't know what it was, but within 3 weeks and some internet searching, I figured it out. I then came across this WONDERFUL website! I found that diluting Apple Cider Vinegar with water (1/2 & 1/2) made it sting less and worked the best. I also bought "Psoriaflora Cream" --a homeopathic cream from your local health store. I put this cream on after the ACV dried. It literally CURED the dermatitis within 2 weeks. I used the ACV morning and night and put the cream on several more times per day. I tapered off using ACV after a week and just used the cream. This is a horrible affliction and I really feel for all of you that have been battling this for years"
06/02/2008: Chloe99 from Seattle, Wa replies: "6/2/08 Update from Chloe. The dermatitis has never returned! Yay! Also forgot to mention that I have been Oil Pulling and it's wonderful!"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, BALMEX DIAPER CREME
[YEA] 01/25/2009: Amanda from Hurst, Texas writes: "I came across this site one day searching for cures for perioral dermatitis. I saw how many good results people were having with apple cider vinegar so I figured I would give it a shot. My grocery store didn't carry the organic so I just bought the regular kind. I also purchased some balmex after reading some good comments about that as well. After 3 days of cleansing the face with ACV and sleeping with balmex on at night my face is almost completely cleared up. Thanks so much to everyone who posted you definitely helped me."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, COCONUT OIL
08/02/2009: Jenifer from Worcester, Ma writes: "Well i dont think anyone knows how happy I am to find alot of people who feel the same misery I do with this awful skin infection. I'm just finding out that I have had this for a long time. I have always had spots of dry skin on and off for years and when i applied cortizone ointment to it the dry skin seemed to clear up, so I never thought it was anything serious until 4 weeks ago. It started with a big patch of red dry skin on the left side of my mouth. So I went to walmart and bought some cortizone ointment since it always seemed to help in the past. I applied it for about 4 or 5 days and was not getting any better. I couldn't get in to see the derm for about a week and a half and did not want to keep going to work lookin like a freak. So I decided to go to the ER following evening to see if they could give me something to help it until I could see the derm. The ER doctor told me I had a contact dermatitis and gave me a course of oral steroids to take and said they should wipe it out in a few days. Well that was the worse thing i could of done. About 5 days later i went in the bathroom and looked in the mirror i was developing little pimples around both sides of my nose. But i never thought the steroids would be causing that because i didn't know much about them. So i continued putting the cortizone around my nose and the side of my mouth. Woke up a couple days later and had another spot of pimples on the other side of my mouth and started to freak out and called my derm to see if they could get me an emergency appointment and they told me if someone cancelled they would call me right away. I opened the phone book and called about 5 more derms and were all booking 2 months ahead so i gave up on that. The same evening when I was in the shower i lifted my head up to wash my neck and noticed i had a lump under my chin area and was really sore. I was scared at this point had no idea what was wrong with me and went back to the ER. The doctor told me it was some type of dermatits almost looked like rosacea and gave me a prescription for clindamycin an antibiotic gel to apply to the rash and it was draining from the inside thats why i had that lump. He said the best thing to do is stop taking the steroids because they are the reason why my face is covered in this mess, apply the gel and waite the few more days to see my derm and really find out whats going on. I figured atleast he didn't try and tell me he knew exactly what i had like the other idiot doctor who gave me something to only make it worse. So I started applying the gel for the next couple days and waited anxiously to go to the derm. Can't really say i noticed a difference with the gel just seemed to get worse. So finally i made it to the derm and she knew right away I had Perioral Dermatitis. It was the most greatest sense of relief just to know exactly what i had. She gave me a prescription for Tetracycline, an antibiotic. I told her how for as long as I can remember I would break out with dry skin on the sides of my nose and sides of my mouth and the cortizone ointment would heal it. Guess it just wasn't full blown like it is now and of course I wasn't taking steroids to make it worse, and said using the cortizone is why it kept coming back and never really went away. Anyways I started taking the antibiotic 4 days ago and kept applying the gel, didn't notice it helping. I started to research this dermatitis on the web and came across this website. I have been out of work for over a week and I wish i could post a picture to show why and how bad my face really looks. So I read about the ACV and coconut oil. I had some ACV in my cabinet so right away i went and put some on my POD. It burned so much but Ill do anything at this point. I called CVS and the grocery store to see if they carried coconut oil and no luck. So my boyfriend went to the health store yesterday and bought me a jar of it. LOL I wont go out of the house! And today he went back to get me some raw organic ACV because ive read on here that works best. I will start using that today. I have noticed the first few days it was really red and sore but today when I woke up the areas of my pod feel like I have super glue on my face the skin is cracking a little, very scaly, tight, and dry. Im assuming that is a sign of it healing. If anyone else has experienced this please comment back. Im so afraid to put any moisturizer on it (cetaphil) recommended by my derm., so i use the coconut oil constantly to try and hydrate it but it seems to remain really tight and dry. So that is my story for now i will comment again in a few days after using the organic ACV and see if that works any differently and hopefully takes this dryness away. I will not return to work this week either! I just cannot face anyone looking like this, it really can be damaging to ones ego. But I am so happy I found this sight and people who can relate to this awful infection. Thank you for all of your ideas and help, take care everyone."
08/03/2009: Erica from Central, Ma replies: "Wow a post from a local person, on the same day!! Well I am finally seriously looking for natural cures for my POD. Ive had it since January and have been on two cycles of antibiotics, one for three weeks (from my PCP) the other for 3 months (from my derm). Of course niether worked. Yeah for a while, but it comes right back. And once i got off the antibiotics i broke out terribly!! For the longer period I was also perscribed some kind of sulfate lotion to use twice a day. As awful as it is, I am glad I am not alone: looking in the mirror and feeling so depressed that I look this way, afraid to show myself in public! :( I hate taking antibiotics for such a long period of time and have used ACV, probiotics, plain organic yogurt, coconut oil, among other things in the past for various issues, includig yeast infections and skin issues. But I am going to the healthfood store tomorrow that is a half hour away just to stock up on lots of these items. I have hope!! And I will keep posting!!!"
08/03/2009: Marie from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "Remove all sodium lauryl sulfate from your daily regime to help with peri oral dermitits.
I was improperly diagnosed with POD several years ago. In truth, I was having an allergic reaction to eating too much home-made red sauce: tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, etc. This misdiagnosis lead to a painful and permanently scarring on my chin. Thanks dermatologists! So I would high recommend you do an elimination diet to see if there's something you are showing a sensitivity to. ALSO and JUST importantly, stop using your regular tooth paste and switch to a Sodium lauryl sulfate free tooth paste. Natural food stores will have several to chose from. Get as MUCH SLS out of your health and beauty regime as possible. It makes a WORLD of difference. Also, I use only a wet wash cloth to wash my face and moisturizer with jojoba oil. Coconut oil works well for me too, but I find that jojoba absorbs better. Now if I get a small bump on my face around my nose or chin area, I know I'm eating too much of certain kinds of foods...NOT that I'm having an actural dermatological episode. It sounds so silly to write this, but our bodies really DO want to be healthy and send us all kinds of signals to let us know little things are out of order. If we don't pay attention to these signs--don't know that dry skin or other outbreaks are actually signs that something bigger is going on--the body will take even more drastic measures to get our attention.
Good luck!"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, COCONUT OIL, CALENDULA, YOGURT
[YEA] 05/03/2009: Sally from Portland, Oregon writes: "i have recently been struck with perioral dermatitis. i have no idea why, and have not been to a dermatologist to get diagnosed, but i am sure this is what it is. anyhow, 1st i would like to thank EC and ALL the people who post here, you are all so great! thanks for sharing! my treatment for this is: ACV on a cotton ball over the affected area, coconut oil, calendula and yogurt. the ACV burns a bit and causes some redness, but this subsides after a bit. the coconut oil is very moisturizing and soothing. calendula is also calming, moisturizing and sooting-california baby makes a superb calendula cream. putting regular plain organic yogurt on the area is also very cooling and soothing. i also drink ACV 3+ times daily diluted with water and eat a cup or so of yogurt and eat 3+ tbsp of coconut oil daily. this regimen works for me every time. and all of these things are really good for you and your skin. hope this helps! good luck!"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, GREEN TEA
10/01/2009: Curlyq from Rantoul, Il writes: "Perioral Dermatitis
A testimonial and a question, if I may....I finally figured out what the problem was. I've had acne for years and mostly kept it in check using a certain 3-step solution set available on television. But this year I had a breakout unlike my usual pattern and I've been chasing it around my face for almost ten months now. A friend told me she had been having POD, I looked into it, and sure enough, it sounded just like me. I immediately started ACV, but I read to use it one part ACV to one part warm green tea. It's been about 3 days now, the redness is decreasing, and some of the bumps are beginning to dry up. I'm a little discouraged to see some new ones coming in now, one next to my nose, and I never had that before. :( However, I had read at one time that putting Hydrocortisone on a popped zit will lessen the scarring, or fade old acne scars. Well, that had been part of my regimen for years, so, up until 3 days ago, I was slathering Hydrocortisone on all these bumps and red marks....D'oh! Lesson learned. And tonight I just had my first dose of ACV in water. BLECCCH!!!! I've had gutter wine that tasted better! However, I refuse to take steroids and antibiotics, so I'll see where this goes. My beautiful boyfriend comes back to the stated in 2 weeks and I'm horrified to think that he's going to see me looking this way. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Another thought about diet....I recently became an avid cook and baker. for the most part, I avoided bread products and kept sweets to a minimum. Now, as of late, I've been having cupcakes, pies and cookies a few times a week, as well as making breads and pastas. I notice the times when I'm doing the most baking and eating is when the POD is at its worst. I reluctantly hung up my apron and am kicking the flour and sugar for the time being to see if it helps. I already have a very good diet, lots of fresh organics, a minimum of red meat, but having two cupcakes or sweet fruit bread every day had to be throwing my system out of whack for sure.
ANYWAY! On to my question....do you suppose it would be wise to keep using my 3-piece skincare system? My forehead is completely clear and I'm hoping it stays that way. I've stopped using the Benzoyl peroxide lotion on the areas affected with POD, instead using a mild, natural, oil-free lotion to help relieve the dryness. There is also a glycolic acid toner that comes with the kit, I am using it on the affected areas, I would assume with a high-acid product like ACV on my skin, the much milder witch hazel/glycolic solution can't be hurting any....right? Anyone else also using acne remedies at the same time?
One more question....My mother was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She's an overweight starch queen, but I'm assuming I may be overly sensitive to sugars and starches, without actually being diabetic? This friend of mine also has Candida, and suffers reactions and breakouts of POD even when her blood sugar is in perfect check for weeks on end. Anyone else out there with diabetes, or family history of diabetes? Not only am I curious to see if there's a real tie, but I'd also like to know if I have to exercise much more caution, do people with POD tend to be more prone to developing diabetes as well, even if they are diet-conscious?"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE
[YEA] 09/23/2009: Tracey from Calgary, Alberta, Canada writes: "Perioral Dermatitis / ACV / Hydrogen Peroxide
I must begin by expressing a sentiment I have read many times throughout this site yet feel compelled to reiterate just the same. I am simply agog at the time, money and heartache - especially the heartache - I wouldn't have had to spend if just one of my doctors had known of the effective, natural cures I have found here at Earth Clinic. Thank you, Earth Clinic.. from the bottom of my heart.
After almost two months of being mostly trapped indoors with perioral dermatitis, I found this site. For five days I followed this regime:
~ 2 tbsp of pure organic apple cider vinegar in 16oz of water, 2-3x/day
~ Saturation of a cotton pad application of straight apple cider vinegar to the affected area 2-3x/day
Less than a week later, 85% of the hideously shaming rash had cleared. Rather than a solid mass of red bumps (scattered with whiteheads) from nose to chin, the condition appeared as individual spots, more like regular acne. I noticed these spots were stubborn and seemed somewhat resistant to the ACV. Additionally, in areas that had healed, hyper-pigmentation was extensive.
I searched about this last issue and found the page re. hydrogen peroxide and acne. Yesterday (day 6), I did this three times:
~ Dip cotton swab on stick (you know the kind for ears .. won't say brand name) in HP
~ Apply to individual spot and hold in place for at least 5 minutes
I did this on the couch while watching a movie because it was a little time consuming. When my husband came home and saw the difference after two applications he yelled out loud (with joy for me :). The speed at which HP healed the remaining spots was astonishing. I literally could see it happening in the mirror. Toward the end of each of the three sessions, spots I had started with were visibly reduced. So was the hyper pigmentation. I expect another day or two of this will completely clear things up. :D !!!
Today is September 23 and I went out WITHOUT FEELING HUMILIATED for the first time since August 5th. Until a week ago, I hid away indoors as much as I could and watched the summer end while agonizingly waiting for prescribed pills and creams to work. If I hadn't found this site, I expect things today would be much the same. Thanks once again, Earth Clinic! And to anyone who reads these posts and can relate, we're all rooting for you! Give it a try, don't give up hope and have faith in the healing power of Ma Nature!"
EC: Thank you for the kind words and detailed feedback, much appreciated. Congratulations on finding a cure!

Like all the others, the prescription meds were but a band-aid to a much larger problem. I was elated to find this page. In the past the only treatment the doctors and I could manage was phototherapy, but just another band-aid. I have tried the ACV which initially worked then, to no avail. Probiotics produced no change. My sort is very stubborn! SO... I tried peroxide alone b/c that was all I had here at the house. It works very well for me but I am going to add Borax to the mix as I still get some minor flair ups. THANKS to you all! At least I have some hope of help other than producing further wrinkling to my already aging skin!"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, TEA TREE OIL
[YEA] 08/08/2008: Maria from San Francisco, California writes: "I have had Perioral Dermatitis for 5-6 years. I have tried all modern drugs and creams.Nothing worked. I became very sad and unhappy because I had to give up make up because of this condition.6 days ago I started using ACV (raw organic), on my face evry night. After it dries I am using an organic face cream that has tea tree oil 5% and vitamin e in it's content. It heals perfectly. I can not believe it. It is truly a miracle. I am also using regular whole milk yogurt on my face, as a mask. I think in one more week I wll be CURED. I also discovered how important it is to use natural tooth paste (no flouride), organic face soap, natural shampoos, natural/organic face products. I have learned a loot in this 6 years about my condition.
Read everything you can about it this way you guys will be able to be be educated in what is it that you have, and how to cure it. I will write back soon with feedback."
10/07/2009: Chelsea from Santa Barbara, Ca replies: "I have to say I agree with you on learning about the toothpaste, face wash, shampoo, etc. I have always been fairly conscientious about the products I use (Dr Bronners mint wash for body, Organic Shamp/Cond, Cetaphil face wash) and I have used tea tree oil for years on blemishes. But I was appalled to find out how many products have SLS in them. I switched my shampoo, only use the Dr Bronners or soap on my body and have found that ZERO soap on the face did the trick. Just water. I had read this but was still using a zinc soap (I had read that it helped) every day. We went camping last weekend and I used nothing but bottled water to rinse off my face. When we got back, my spots had dried up and were barely red at all. I was thinking that my face would get worse so I hurried to go wash it when we got back and they actually got worse from the washing, than from leaving them alone! In short, I learned to give them a break, just rinse with water. I use a solution of ACV with epsom salts dissolved in them at night and then ACV and some tea tree oil in the morning.
Good luck everyone!!"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, WASHING WITH BAKING SODA , GREEN TEABAGS
[YEA] 03/15/2008: Sherry from Vancouver, Wa writes: "I found this site while looking for natural remedies for my perioral dermatitis that I have been battling w. for around 7 years. Before that time I never had any kind of rash before. I have taken oral and topical antibiotics many of times of the years with no or little relief from it. I was never told it could be allergies of any kind.....although now reading through some of the other testimonies am beginning to think this. I have been using ACV 1x daily on the affected area before bed. It definently burned and turned red..when I awoke the next morning the bumps had scabbed over and were indeed healing themselves. Also...just to note that I have been putting Yogi green tea bags on my rash 1-2x's a week and also washing w/ baking soda before bed about 4x's a week. Have noticed dramatic changes in skin. My skin tone is great and my pore size has changed as well. Small wrinkles on forehead have even become less noticeable. Not sure which product is responsible for such changes...perhaps it is the combo. I am loving it though...my check book is loving it too!!"

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 08/18/2008: Lily from San Antonio, USA writes: "I have rosacea and was trying remedies on this website. The Borax soution mixed with peroxide and water applied to the face is working well so far. I also had dermatitus. I had dry skin around my nose and on my chin. It burned and left my skin very flaky. I didn't even know what it was until I saw others on this website who had the exact same symptoms I had. I had seen many others who had dermatitis try ACV. I tried it and it worked okay, it just stung so bad. What has really helped me is a facial cream called Pomada De ARNICA. I bought it at HEB> it is only 2.99, so i tried it and it soothed my skin. It is in the same aisle as all the spanish herbal creams, just further down from the more popular brands. it is a mixture of petrolueum jelly, eucalyptus oil, and other oils and minerals. It is like a balm, but the point is in two days the redness went down alot, and the flakiness is gone. I was so excited!!!!"

[YEA] 05/06/2009: Paula from McDonough, GA writes: "I have been battling POD for months. I came close to just going back to steroid creams because I could not take the embarrassment of my face. I tried EVERYTHING. I finally went and bought Balmex Diaper Cream.....by the second day it was gone! I need to know if I should keep putting this on every night to keep it from coming back? Does anyone know? Please email me at paula.balliew@yahoo.com. Thank you for whoever posted to use Balmex. ACV kind of helped but nothing like the Balmex!"
