TED'S REMEDIES

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "Consider taking borax. Some people believed the demodex mites are responsible for rosacea. They may be right. But, there are others too that are not yet identified. I prefer to lump all these insect issues to just one category: nanoinsects. These insects have several weakness that you can kill them, or at least weaken them. One obvious ones is borax. The treatment can be broken down to two things:

1. Taken internally: Try 1/8 teaspoon to 1/4 teaspoon of borax in one liter of water/day. You just drink this water throughout the day. If it runs out then drink just normal water, with some magnesium added if possible. Magnesium is found in certain seeds such as sunflower. They seem to be synergistic with the vitamin D as vitamin D promotes calcium and the body needs to balance both magnesium and calcium to an ideal amount.

2. Used externally: Dog mange is confirmed demodex mites and the only treatment that effectively cured of dog mange is 1% hydrogen peroxide and borax saturated solution applied topically. Many people believe the demodex mites is the cause of rosacea. What I am sure about is it is an insect issue. The method of killing them is external application of 1% hydrogen peroxide with borax saturated solution to the face, unrinsed. It tends to cause drying. So you can apply appropriate lotions to prevent drying, such as jojoba oil, aloe vera or lavender oil."

I just want everyone to know that tea contains flouride (black, green, white, oolong, & rooibos) I would drink tons a day and have had pd for about 2 years, about the same time I started drinking tea. I still drink it but have to limit myself and i use a cortisone. Thanks for info, hope it helps."

[YEA]  06/20/2011: Lisa from Miami, Fl writes: "I have had PD for over 10 years now. The only prescription medicine that ever worked for me was the minocylline. It completely took it off. However, it will return and it is pretty expensive and most insurance companies have a hard time approving it for patients. Everything else that I have been told - stay away from fatty foods, flouride, sls products - has not worked at all and ACV w/green tea only slightly minimized it but caused itching. I have it pretty severe and I am really frustrated with it. I look at this site every so often and I finally took the advice of the gentleman who recommended acidophilus. He, however, removed flouride and sls products - I did not. I have maintained the same diet and I quickly felt results with the acidophilus pill.

However, I also suffer from occasional alopecia so I picked up a bottle of Biotin. I take one of each daily around noon as I also suffer from hypothyroidism and you cant really mix the medication for that with anything else for about 4 hours or so to be safe it doesnt stop the synthroid from working. I never write on these websites but this time I had to tell anyone who will listen and who suffers from PD that with me taking one pill of each acidophilus and biotin daily I must tell you that my PD has drastically been reduced. The biotin has also improved my facial skin that I dont need makeup anymore. I totally love my skin now and I am not embarrased anymore. I hated living my life with redness around my nose and mouth and noticed that it would worsen when I ovulated and the week before my menstrual cycle. (I know too much information but I think it is important to know because these are the times the flare ups would occur the worse and I have never read where anyone ever mentioned that. ) I have pink now... Pink - slight pink and hope that as I continue taking the vitamins it will slowly go away. Now, I must admit one thing, I dont know if it is the acidophilus or the biotin that is working these wonders but I did read the following on webmd for biotin deficiency symptoms:

"Symptoms of deficiency include thinning of the hair (often with loss of hair color), and red scaly rash around the eyes, nose, and mouth."

http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-313-BIOTIN.aspx?activeIngredientId=313&activeIngredientName=BIOTIN&source=2&tabno=2

Does this sound familiar to anyone????? Isnt if amazing that after all the dermatologists we have visited, nobody has mentioned a possible biotin deficiency???? I have seen 3 different dermatologists and they all seem to blame it on the flouride and sls but will not confirm. Yet we trust them and do whatever it is they tell us to do. Flouride free toothpaste is not too cheap and sls free products arent either, yet we do it because nobody but us understands what it is like to live with this horrible redness in our face! Gosh it makes me so mad that all it took was some simple vitamins to rid myself of this PD that was harming my self esteem and ruining my pictures because of the redness. It only gets worse in extreme hot and cold weather too! If you suffer from PD and have tried everything like I have and have had no success, please give the acidophillus and biotin a shot. It cant hurt. I bought them right off the target pharmacy dept.... And to the people who recommended Acidophilus - THANK YOU."

07/14/2011: Liz from Elmwood Park, Il replies: "Thanks for your post! I was told I have PD due to an ointment with steroid I was using for over a year. A Dr had prescribed it to me so it kinda makes me mad that I would be going through this now, but anyway... After reading all these posts I went ahead and got some of the organic plain yogurt, acidophilus and coconut oil (moisturizer instead of my MaryKay). The yogurt feels so good I don't even want to rinse it off!! Lol The acidophilus works great, taken that before so I was ok with taking it again. I'm currently on Oracea 40mg which I started today after an awful few weeks with the 100mg. I'm using Metrogel (nights) and Protopic (mornings). I switched my toothpaste, shampoo and stopped wearing makeup. Dermatologist told me to no longer use anything to wash my face, only water. WHY AM I STILL MISERABLE?!!

Questions:

WASHING: I would think that not using anything to wash would leave all the dirt on my face. ??

COCONUT OIL: Have you ever tried the coconut oil to moisturize? I laid off of it from my face because I thought it was making me break out more but I may use it again because my skin is so dry. I do use it on my body, hands, feet and it's wonderful! Not greasy at all and my skin feels & looks great.... Except for my face!!!

BIOTIN: Can I take the biotin supplement with the Oracea? How much are you taking? I have "Hair, Skin & Nails" supplement. Can I just use that?

PROTOPIC & METROGEL: Have you or anyone else used the Protopic and Metrogel. Just curious to hear how they worked for other people.

Thanks for your help. Feeling overwhelmed with it today. Thanks for "listening"

Liz"

07/17/2011: Sara from Charleston, Sc, Usa replies: "I'm sorry to hear that you're still having problems. I am too. :( From what I understand, it is the sodium lauryl sulfate in cleansers (soaps, face washes, dishwashing liquids, shampoo, etc. ) that are contributing to the PD. I recently switched all of my cleansers to SLS free (which is not easy to do, there's sulfates in everything! ) along with my toothpaste that is also fluoride free. You should also switch to fluoride free water since most tap water has added fluoride. I am taking acidophilus and biotin supplements. I also use the yogurt mask and am eating yogurt all day pretty much. I stocked up on Good Belly from Whole Foods to add even more probiotics to my system.

I was on antibiotics a lot growing up and have been fighting this for years. Only in the past few months has it gotten this bad. It started spiraling out of control when I was prescribed Metrogel. 3 or 4 days of that and it seemed that I had really made it angry. It has been getting worse ever since then.

I hope you are feeling a little better. I understand feeling overwhelmed... I haven't left my house in 4 days. Good luck."

07/19/2011: Marie from Indianapolis, In replies: "Liz, So sorry for your suffering. I have had PD for over 2 yrs now. For about 8 months in the beginning it was unbearably hideous. I was unbearably hideous. PD felt like it was ruining my life. My partner and my best friend both have perfect skin. I felt alone. It was truly agonizing. Multiple trips to the Dr. and Dermatologist led me to use a series of different products.

I tried Metrogel, Tretinoin Gel, Clindamycin, and prescription strength cortizone cream. I couldn't tell you which was the worst, but none seemed to have any effect at all. Quite honestly they all made it worse. The "it gets worse before it gets better" rule does not work out when you work with the public. I also took antibiotics which just got my hopes up because it would go away then come back about a week or so after I was done taking them. Not to mention leave me with infections in other sensitive parts of my body(if you catch my drift. ) So next I tried the natural route. AV, Tea tree oil, coconut oil, Tamanu oil, Neem extract (I'm sure I am missing a couple in there somewhere)

Then I discovered a life saver (for me) "Nixoderm". This was the first thing that had any real lasting effect. Just put it on the effected area and slept in it over night. Burned like H*LL almost to the point that I was about to wash it off then the sensation goes away. I woke up the next morning in amazement over my face because at least 50% of it was gone. It is super cheap. I bought it online & it lasts forever. Nixoderm did not cure me completely, but it makes my PD managable and at the time I was desperate for anything just to lessen it.

I also found a product from a place near my hometown called "Skinmagic" It contains Burdock root, gotu kola leaf & echinacea root. Also very inexpensive. The web address is www.herbsfromearthmagic.info. I use this ointment twice a day in combination with the occasional use of the Nixoderm if I have a bad flare up. I do sometimes use the yogurt mask but aside from just feeling good on my skin I never really noticed a difference in the PD. I will soon be trying the acidophilus and biotin, as I am on the eternal quest for a natural cure that will CURE, as my PD fluctuates from 75-80% better for most of the time. I try to maintain a healthy diet as well. Little sugar, rarely eating anything fried, lots of water etc.

This is what helped me. Hang in there.

Marie"

08/12/2011: Diane from Ottumwa, Ia replies: "Re: Biotin. Thank you Lisa from Miami. Nutritional deficiencies are one of the causes to suspect in any kind of rash. Biotin deficiencies develop easily and the symptoms will look exactly like PD. If your rash is non-itchy, try Biotin. I realized that I had been really good about taking my B-complex for the past couple of months, and when the rash first started, I doubled up on my B-complex, of of course made the Biotin deficiency worse and escalated the rash. Even my very good B-complex doesn't have proportionately enough biotin in it, and since the B vitamins are used in specific proportions, I was actually draining myself of biotin every time I took my B-complex."
09/25/2011: Angel from Naples, Fl replies: "I had clear skin most of my life except for the occassional pimple. Three years ago, while in my mid forties, I started to have acne on my chin. I went to the dermatologist and was diagnosed with perioral dermatitis. I thought maybe it was do to hormonal changes given my age. The dermatologist wanted to put me on antibiotics for an extended period of time in hopes that it would work. I didn't want to take drugs so I decided to try and find a natural treatment on my own--without luck. Then I heard a radio show called, "The Soap Dish"--the host is Deana Kelly, owner of the Naples Soap Co. She said that her establishment sold a natural Sea Salt soap that cleared up skin problems including acne. I tried it, not expecting too much since I'd tried many different things. To my surprise, after three weeks, it cleared up my chin. At first I was using on my entire face, including problem area (chin). I did notice that it was drying out the area around my eyes making me look older, so just now use it on my oily areas (t-zone, forehead, chin).

Also, Deana has made it very affordable. Please let me know if it helps you. I would happy to know that this info helped even just one other person suffering with this problem."

12/15/2011: L.b. from Lexington, Ohio/usa replies: "I just wanted to responed to the person who is only using water to wash and still has trouble. I did all those things you did also and would still have trouble in patches on my face. From reading this site it has really helped. I take a good brand of vitamin b complex it helps and so does the acidophilus, but when I washed my face with manuca honey only and tried the vinegar rinse it burn to much. So I deluted the vinegar to 50/50 with water and still to much. I came up with an idea to try because I was wondering if the tap water was maybe some of my problem? I put 1 cup of distilled water in an empty bottle, 1 tsp of manuka honey, 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar with the mother. I shake it up and at morning and night I use a cotton ball to wash my face with it. Afterwards I put a small amount of Grapeseed oil on my face. It really has made a huge difference. I use the grapeseed oil on my arms when they flare up and it helps them very much too. I hope this will help someone else."

[YEA]  09/12/2008: M from St Louis, MO writes: "A friend in the cosmetics field said the redness in the lines some people have from the nose to the corners of the mouth can be caused by mites. She recommended alcohol. Not having any on hand at the time I used Germ-X handwash, not the intended use for it, BUT it worked to stop the irritation and get rid of the redness and bumps. I noticed that IF MY DOG LICKED MY FACE I WOULD GET THE IRRITATION AGAIN! now I NEVER let my dog lick my face, ever! I'm sure I have him to thank for the mites I think I get. So Germ-X when needed, CLEAN BED LINENS OFTEN, AND NO DOG SLEEPING ON THE BED!!"

09/15/2009: Violet from St. Pete, Fl replies: "Dog mites don't affect people. If your dog has mites you'll know it because he will be itchy and miserable, thus the dog should be treated. But, like I said, dog mites affect dogs and human mites affect humans - they are two different things. So for those of you who enjoy sleeping with your pooch it is ok to keep doing so. If you notice a problem after being licked then you are probably allergic to the dog's saliva."
09/20/2009: Robert Henry from Ten Mile, Tn Usa replies: "Wow, Violet..... wondering where you are getting your facts. Ever read what Hulda Clark says about pets and parasites? Are you aware that Demodex Mites cause mange in animals and get into your nose hair roots and are almost impossible to cure? A dog's tongue contains E-coli and is the greatest cause of human stomach ulcers. Ever watch what spot your dogs licks when his buddy comes up? Do you know why all dogs have to be wormed every so often? Ted and many others have posted all this on this site. Read more."
09/21/2009: Violet from St. Pete, Fl replies: "Hi Robert Henry,

I got that info from my vet. I sleep with my dogs all the time and after reading M's post I called my vet to inquire about the mites. That is what she told me.

I was not aware that demodex gets into human hair roots but I am well aware of all your other comments (worms, e-coli, where dogs lick).

I am on this site all the time but I have just recently started posting, in fact that was only the 2nd time I have posted here and from the tone of your reply obviously I have upset you. Sorry :-(

As for reading more, I am a very prolific reader but I have by no means read everything on this site yet... I'm working on it ;-)

I am always interested in hearing what others have to say, and I am more than interested in learning as much as I can about natural cures. Now I'm off to read the demodex posts."

07/15/2011: S Neville from Stockbridge, Ga replies: "I have had PD for almost a year. I know that doesn't compare to what most of you have gone through but I am concerned. I went to the dr because I thought it was allergies. I was itchy, red & flakey around one side of my nose. He put me on steriods... WOW when I came off I was broke out on both sides of my nose & around my entire mouth. Went back to dr, who then said it was staph, steriods & antibiotic. Came back AGAIN even worse! Went to derm who said it was PD.

I changed my toothpaste, shampoo, everything! It took about 2 months for it to go away and now it is back again. But again it statred as a small (the size of a pencil eraser) on one side of my nose. It is now on the other side of my nose but no where around my mouth. Do you all always break out around the mouth first? I don't understand why mine is the nose. I haven't been to the dr this go around, it has been 7 weeks and it is just around my nose and itches so bad I just want to claw it!"

01/05/2012: Kiki from Winnipeg, Mb writes: "I would like to thank everyone who posted, I have had POD for a few years now and I have gotten steroids and creams for doctors and nothing has worked. I am using cortisone cream and it has made it worse and spread to the rest of my face. I have bought ACV and I am going to try putting it directly on the rash as well as ingesting it. Hopefully this works.

I am so glad that I found this site as my mother told me to go back to the dermatologist. From what everyone has said I no longer feel alone in thinking that those doctors have no idea what they are talking about. Everything that I have tried from them has made it worse. It is frustrating that these people go to school for this and it seems that they have "screwed" a few people over with their prescriptions. Anways enough with my rant, I am going to try this and hopefully it works and if not there are lots of great suggestions here! Thanks to everyone!"

09/22/2011: Neels from Charlotte, Nc writes: "Hi all, I have been dealing with PD for 3 months now (Not nearly as long as some of you, I was so sorry to hear that some of you have been dealing for so long. ) My story sounds similar to many of you... Thought it was acne, went to a dermatologist and was perscribed Metronidazole and Protopic. I used both for about a week and didn't see any improvement, however the PD didn't seem to get worse either.

I found this blog and have started to use the ACV (ingesting & topically), yogurt and acidophilus (it's been two days). I have also eliminated products that contain SLS. I would like to say that I think the PD is improving, but that could all just be in my head too.

My question is... How much of the ACV should you drink? How often? How often should you apply the ACV topically? When should you apply the yogurt? Immediately after the ACV? How often? I have stopped using the Metronidazole, was that a good idea? Should I use it again in conjunction with the natural items? Finally... When should I expect to see dramatic results (i. E. Feeling like I can go out in public with out a bunch of red spots all over my face)?

Any advice/suggestions would be a great help! I appreciate what I've read so far and look forward to being PD free soon!"

Replies
11/30/2011: Michelle from Reading, Pa replies: "Wow, just wow. After reading back posts to 2007, having POD for a week doesn't seem so bad. I feel so awful for all of you having it longer and/or not being able to get rid of it! :( I know the looks from people are awful. I didn't like people staring at me even without this!

Other than being extremely drug sensitive, I've never had any allergies of any kind. I did use a topical steroid on and off for a few months about 7 years ago, but no acne drugs ever, never taken birth control, no sinus problems, haven't had an antibiotic in years, haven't worn makeup in years, haven't used toothpaste in years (but baking soda), no fluoride in the water and yet for some odd reason I woke up one morning last week looking like a clown. So I guess that leaves stress? Which I do have. A lot. My nerves have been shot for years. Anyway, it's all over my cheeks and now creeping on my upper lip and now I have a spot on my nose too (probably payback for joking that all I needed now was a red nose and little car to jump out of... ). I'm on day 2 of the ACV and also alternating honey (which really helped with the itch) and coconut oil for moisture but so far haven't seen much in results, except the additional spot appearing on my nose. I already have done 2 detoxes and a liver detox this year, and have been taking acidolphilus for 8 months now including B, C, A, E, D, Lysine, NAC, krill, chlorella, calcium, magnesium, zinc, and switched to sea salt (due to Fukushima, btw guys, PLEASE look up enenews. com for your health) so I don't understand! ? Maybe it has stopped progression? But like I said, a week and a first time sufferer I don't have much to go on for comparison except my condition isn't nearly as bad as some of the pictures I've seen.

But what has given me some relief is calendula ointment in that it's taken a lot of the redness away and calmed it down some - at least I can move my face somewhat now. I also started taking skullcap per the recommendations of the Native American Medicine Woman I see as she's convinced it's nerves in my case and actually, that did take the jolt out of my system somewhat even after the first pill - apparently it's much used for that and I now see why. So I've decided to keep up the ACV for 2 weeks so I'll see how that goes and continue doing what I've been doing. *crossing fingers* I've also stopped using shampoo until I can find a good one, used olive oil for cleansing over the past week, but now found a good soap SLS-free just in case (but who would want that anyway right? So I'm going to stick with that too. ) It's Yardley's English Lavender.

Hopefully next week I can follow up and say it's all gone. Regardless, I thank Ted and the site and you all for your wonderful help and wish everyone the best of luck too. And again, please become aware of the radiation issues too and what you can do to protect yourselves as there's at least 3 melt-throughs, at least 5 more reactors open fissioning since March, and they are now burning the contamination, so we're all being constantly dosed with these hormone disrupters and will be forever soooo :(

Bless you all!
Michelle"

12/20/2011: Weavemike44 from Cincinnati, Ohio, Usa replies: "HI, I've been dealing with PD for almost ten years now. I've been treated on and off with Tetracycline and Doxycycline - and my PD typcially goes about 90% away when I use the antibiotics, but I've recently had some bad flare ups and my new dermatologist prescribed me Protopic.

I used Protopic for a few days, but read mostly negative feedback online about it and decided that I want to get to the root of the problem naturally.

To me, the hardest part about naturally diagnosing PD is not knowing other people's exact symptoms when I read what works and what doesn't. I don't get any bumps, pimples, etc. - I just get redness on both sides of my mouth and down near my chin. If I'm not treating it at all - it will get very flaky and dry (especially after a shower! ).

So, my question to the expert or the experienced, since I just have this redness - - what's the best approach?

So far, in the last week, these are the steps I've taken:

  • Purchased Bragg's ACV - have applied directly the first few times, since yesterday I've decided to go 50/50 with water so it irritates my skin less. And since I'm just trying to get rid of red splotches, I was wondering if I should even try ACV.
  • Since lastnight, began using no-flouride toothpaste, not using any soaps with SLS
  • For a few days, I've taken Acidophilus and Biotin
  • Since yesterday, I'm giving the yogurt mask a shot (I'm hopeful this does something about the redness! )
  • Cut out coffee
  • I'm applying the California Baby Calendula cream a few times per day and after the yogurt mask comes off

Am I doing too much? Or, am I far too impatient? Today is Tuesday - and I've been on the natural kick since about Saturday. I also drank quite a bit Saturday night, and I'm wondering if the alchohol ingested can set you back for more than just a day.

I just want to see some signs of improvement!!

I also picked up some Tea Tree Oil, but I haven't cracked it open yet. I feel like my skin might just need a break - but I don't know. I just want to get rid of these darn red splotches around my mouth, and I'd be a happy camper!"

12/20/2011: Leslie from New Castle, Pa replies: "I have it also since last February. Tried several different things and so far wasn't able to get rid of it until I saw a post here on Nixoderm. It is working great! I bought it on ebay (not sold in the US) for $1.00. It comes in a little tin and is a paste. I put it on at night after I wash my face. It is for eczema, acne, psoriasis, etc. and is made by SC Johnson. I am thrilled with the results so far and it's only Day 4. I did some google research on it and it's been around for 40 years and I've read feedback on a message board from acne.org and there are alot of people with positive results. Two draw backs... It smells like sulphur and burns at first like no one's business but then dissipates. Worth it though! Hope this helps!"

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  08/11/2011: Mmcgraw from Hamilton, Ontario writes: "I think I may have spoken too soon. My face was completely clear of the POD on sunday after a week of using the ACV and now it is back- not as bad but still very red and dry. I started right back up with the ACV but diluted. I stopped using the ACV for maybe 2 days after my skin was normal, do I still need to use it even after my skin is clear? Or has my skin become immune to the vinegar? Has anyone had this happen to them? Also I'm using virgin olive oil after I put on the ACV to moisturize now, I hope this doesn't complicate things anymore.. I was so relieved and happy and now its back again. Ugh!"

08/12/2011: Jay from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Mmcgraw from Hamilton, Ontario: For starters, you would be much better off using organic virgin coconut oil rather than the olive oil to moisturize. It is very good the skin and hair and is naturally antibiotic and antifungal.

From my experience, this type of skin condition acts like a fungus in the sense that it will withdraw or appear to go somewhat dormant in the area that it is being attacked. It spreads to other parts of the body and returns to the skin once the attack (your ACV treatment) has stopped. You need to attack it vigorously on several fronts if you want to totally eradicate it. This inclued a strong probiotic because the gut is usually the main hiding place. Go to refrigerated section of a good health food store and buy a probiotic with at least 6 different strains of probiotics and follow directions on the package. You need to continue taking these and continue with the ACV for at least a month after you feel the skin condition has been resolved to have some confidence that the problem has been eliminated."

08/12/2011: Mmcgraw from Hamilton, Ontario replies: "Thanks very much! I appreciate your advice! I just got back from the health food store and got some probiotics, coconut oil and Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother. I was using heinz and I'm wondering if that affects the results at all? I also picked up a yeast detox called "candigone" Has anyone used this? Would it be a good idea if I tried?

The coconut oil feels great btw!"
08/13/2011: Jay from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Mmcgraw from Hamilton, Ontario who wrote " I was using heinz and I'm wondering if that affects the results at all?"

Different people have had good results with different vinegars. Some have even had successes for some ailments using regular white vinegar, some with regular Apple Cider Vinegar, and others have had their best results only with organic Apple Cider Vinegar(which includes the mother).

Mmcgraw from Hamilton, Ontario also wrote "I also picked up a yeast detox called candigone. Has anyone used this? Would it be a good idea if I tried?"

If you google candigone you can see various reviews on the manufacturer's website. There appears to be a mixed response to the product with some raves and some blahs. It is a 2 step formulation with several antifungal herbs. In general, doing a good detox regardless of brand is usually a good thing, but for some people the die-off or toxin flush can be overwhelming.

I strongly recommend following the food guidelines that come with the product to support your battle regardless of whether you have quick success or not with or without using the produt.

Read the product reviews and make your own decision."

I have had POD for 10 years and I am only 23. My family doctor would say it was Eczema and prescribe me steroids or vitamins. It has taken a very emotional toll on myself and confidence. My boyfriend always said it never bothered him but it always has bothered me. I would have dry red skin on my chin and above my lip.

Recently after seeing a different doctor he prescribed me metrogel and doxycycline then the POD spread to my cheeks, nose, chin.. Basically all around my mouth and cheeks. I then went off of the prescribed medicine and only used vaseline, which helped a bit. I decided to try a new cleanser without SLS (which I think may be the trigger) then I goofed up and put moisturizer on after washing my face. The next day I woke up to the worst outbreak of my entire life! I had risen bumps, red sores and tiny pimples all over!

I did some research and found this site! So ran out and bought some ACV.. Even though my friends and family thought I was crazy that it would only make it worse. It was like a miracle! My skin was almost 90% better after two days! I had big sores and bleeding and after 2 days they were healed! I put on the ACV in the morning and at night. It hurt like a bugger! But I figured that was because of the open sores, well it still stings and I have no cuts, it almost hurts more now actually! Not sure why? I also drink the ACV Now I am just waiting for a little bit of the pinkness to go away and then it will be all better! The only issue I have now is the flaking. I still get the flaking really bad and have been putting on vaseline to keep it somewhat moist. Does anyone know of a moisturizer that I can use?"

I stopped doing anything then my face got worse. Then I went back to the derm and he gave me Desonide 0.05% I used it for 2 or 3 weeks (can't remember) then I did research and realized how horrible steroids were for my face. I went off everything completely. I started using Virgin Coconut Oil for 2 weeks which made my face look better but I need something more radical.

I began taking ACV 3x a day in 8oz of water, 2 capsules of probotic (acidiphilous), 1 EFA (essential fatty acids-omega 3s, 6s, & 9s), and applying ACV topically twice a day. I started the ACV diluted then a week ago I began undiluting it. It has now been 4 weeks my face looks much better, but it still is really noticeable. A week ago I started using raw honey and it has greatly reduced the redness, but the papsules on my chin are still there and you can still see the PD. It is really bad near my nose, it is a crusty redness. It does look better, but it seems everyone gets relief within 2 weeks. I'm scared it is not working or I am doing too many things. I think I will stop taking the EFA's. I bought Biotin and will start taking it. I also bought some manuka honey. I am going to stop putting ACV on my face when I start using using the honey. I intend to keep it on all day long as well as through the night. I will continue taking the ACV 3x a day. I also bought SLS free toothpast and will see if that will help. Can any advice me. Should I stay with the manuka honey and ACV, but dilute it again? I am worried that doing all this is hurting me not helping.

The PD is under my eyes, above my eyelids, on my forehead, on my nose the sides, all around my mouth, and of course on chin I have papsules everywhere. I look like a clown. It looks better, but still it doesn't look as it is close to going away. It just seems extremely stubborn and I don't know if I should give it more time or what. I go back to school in 2 weeks and I am losing hope. I really don't want to go back with my clown face."

I haven't tried honey so I don't know how to use it/if it's good to use it but the best advice I can give is to keep using the ACV. If you have sensitive skin like me, use 5 parts water, 1 part ACV and use it as a toner 2x a day. Drinking it with a lot of water also is a good idea. Go back to your derm and ask him for a better topical (I'm using metronidazole for redness and am taking minocycline orally 2x a day for the next 6 weeks. ) I think this and the ACV may help you.

The oral will knock out the bumps on your face, it did for me in about a week and a half. Use the ACV for redness as it seems to be helping you. I think you should do a combination of medicine and ACV to really help before school starts.

I hope things work out for you."

[YEA]  06/22/2011: Kc from Los Angeles, Ca writes: "I diagnosed myself with PD after a discouraging appointment with my dermatologist who gave me hyrdocortisone which would work for one day then my PD would come back (and charged me $75-140 a visit w/ health insurance). It started as a small area close to my lower lip and had spread to my entire lower lip and sides of mouth skin area. I really started freaking out and began my search online. I read tons of the posts here about apple cider vinegar and decided to give it a chance before I went back to the derm. I started taking probiotics (acidophilus included) and the ACV (topically and ingested). And it worked!!! My PD is ALL gone, I can't believe it and am soo happy. I really didn't think it was gonna work as well as it did.

At first, I put the ACV straight on my skin (twice a day) and it stung, bad! But I liked it because I thought it meant it was worked. The tiny bumps disappeared quickly but the redness got worse. I think it got worse though because I was burning my skin with the ACV. So then I started diluting the ACV to about 1part ACV and 3-5parts water. REDNESS GONE! The whole process did make my skin dry and flaky so I used pure aloe vera (from the plant) which worked ok. After about a week with only dry flaky skin around my mouth I used a little bit of my cerave face moisturizer and it solved my dry skin problem. I use the diluted ACV soultion once a day or every other day ( for fear that it will come back) and don't use any moisturizer around my mouth. I'm sooo happy!!! Thanks everyone for your posts! You're the reason I'm posting right now, to let you know that your comments aren't falling on deaf ears!!"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  04/21/2011: John from Honolulu, Hawaii replies: "I'm a guy that had perioral dermatitis for over 2 years, and it's been so bad that I chose to use my wife's foundation makeup. Several months ago it started itching badly, and not knowing it was PD at the time, I scratched my face like there was no tomorrow. Well, the PD spread horrifically all over my face. It wasn't until that point I started investigating what was wrong with me. Up until that point I just assumed I had poor skin genetics - dumb!

Thank god for earth clinic and all of you because it has started a wonderful journey of discovery and appreciation for nutrition. I wanted to share my experience and return the favor.

The first thing I discovered was that the commonly prescribed treatment for PD is tetracycline, which has dangerous long-term side effects, and the PD always returns. I never saw a dermatoligist for PD - I self-diagnosed myself by researching the problem, checking out photos and comparing my symptoms.

After much research and dealing with this problem I now believe I know the cause and what I need to do to CURE PD. I started my natural treatment a little more than 2 months ago. After 2 weeks my severe PD symptoms disappeared. Since then I've had to stick to a regimen, but I completely stopped using my wife's makeup, and I've lived without any embarrassing signs of PD for over 2 months now.

From my research and experience I have determined that the cause of PD is an overgrowth of Candida in the body. In order to CURE the disease you have to kill the candida overgrowth, but this is very hard to do. Here's what works for me to get rid of the symptoms.

Before you do the following, remove all toxic chemicals that contain sodium lauryl sulfate and flouride from your home. Buy a new toothpaste without flouride, remove all soap, shampoo, body wash, dish soap, household cleaner, and laundry detergent that contains sodium lauryl sulfate. Natural food stores have natural cleaners without these harmful chemicals that actually do a better job! You need to stop wearing makeup and using ANY creams on your face until your PD symptoms disapear. Once your PD clears up, you can experiment and see what makes the candida thrive and makes your PD flare up. Also, throw out any old makeup - this is filled with bad bacteria that feed candida, and for some of you it may have caused the candida overgrowth in the first place. After you've done this, you're ready to start fighting the candida overgrowth that causes PD by doing the following regimen.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar on Face - This must be organic and unfiltered with the mother (it will say "with the mother" on the label). Use cotton balls to liberally apply the ACV all over your face. No need to dilute it with water! It will sting, but that's a sign it is doing its job. The pain will reduce after a few days. Do this once in the morning and once at night.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Ingested - Every morning and every night you need to drink a shot of ACV. This is very important because it attacks Candida in the body.

3. Apply an organic plain yogurt mask before bed. The yogurt needs to be organic with live cultures. Have at it, stick your whole hand in the yogurt and slop it on your face and leave overnight. I'm serious - the live cultures in the yogurt kill candida.

These 3 things alone had great effects on clearing up pretty much all of my PD symptoms in less than 2 weeks. This may not be enough to cure the PD, however, because it might not completely kill the Candida overgrowth in the body. Personally, if I stop this regimen the PD starts to come back. Also, your diet will determine how effective steps 1-3 are. To get even better results and work towards CURING your PD, add the following….

4. Make sure you maintain great oral health. Scrape all that white stuff off your tongue (which is candida) and gargle twice a day with 3% hydrogen peroxide.

5. Candida overgrowth is believed to begin in the intestinal tract. Acidophilus is a good bacteria that does a great job killing candida in the gut. Get an Acidophilus supplement and take 2x/day. This is also called a probiotic - just make sure it contains Acidophilus.

6. DIET! - What you eat will determine whether the candida is thriving or getting obliterated, which has a direct result on the quality of your skin. Stop eating sugar, all processed foods, alcohol and bread. Try to minimize meats and dairy products. I know, it's hard. The most important thing is sugar. My PD showed no symptoms, and then I ate 3 big bags of chips, a jar of nutella and a loaf of French bread. The PD started coming back even though I was on the regimen. Then, after eating a ton of vegetables and eliminating sugar, it cleared right up after 3 days and stays clear as long as I don't eat much sugar.

7. Amalgam fillings - Amalgam fillings release mercury (a serious toxic poison) into your body every time you grind your teeth.

Low level mercury toxicity suppresses the immune system, which allows candida to proliferate. It is also believed that candida thrives on mercury. Unfortunately I have A LOT of amalgam fillings in my mouth. I'm currently saving money to have them all taken out. If you do have them taken out, you need to have it done at a holistic dentists office, where they understand the dangers of mercury poisoning. After removing your amalgam fillings you need to detox your body of the metal poisoning. You can find natural products that remove heavy metals from your body at the local natural food store. Also, cilantro is great for removing mercury.

I strongly believe that once this mercury poisoning is out of my body, I will be able to starve and kill the candida overgrowth through a strict diet, and actually CURE my PD. My goal is to no longer need this regimen, and be able to eat very moderate levels of sugar, dairy, meat and bread without effecting my skin. If you are truly healthy, there shouldn't be symptoms like PD. Imagine going to bed and waking up without having to put anything on your face - that sounds awesome.

Good luck, and whenever I get the fillings removed, I'll give you an update."

I don't have symptoms every day just about every month or other month. I first noticed an outbreak when I was seventeen. I was going to a homecoming dance. I must have been nervous because my whole face broke out. I went to to a pharmacist and he advised me of cortisone. Then as I have gotten older it happens every time I have an important event to go to or when I am stressed. It happened at my brothers wedding, while I was the best man. I still remember that day. They really didn't include me in the pictures because they thought I was having an allergic reaction and isolated me. This really hurts my esteem, in addition to being 5'7 I have to deal with a red fxxking face. It's not fair. I tried everything from a pharmaseudical stand point.

I am finally deciding that I don't want to rely on a corporation to determine my health. I am trying ACV, besides the smell its wonderful. I have been using it for a day now and its dried out my rash. The rash feels tighter. When I rub the ACV it stings, but I know its working. I need to know an effective schedule to use the remedy. I am noticing a possible side effect. I am constipated."

I think it actually got worse with the Metrogel. Three days ago I started looking on-line for some answers. 1. Washing my face. (with anything)
2. A cotton ball with Ethyl alcohol to clean the area(this kind of alcohol does not dry my face)
3. A cotton ball with ACV with the mother to apply in the affected area (painful in the open wounds, but the cure is fast in less than a week it will not hurt anymore)
4. I finish with natural aloe vera when the ACV is dry. Natural Aloe Vera from the plant is like a gel, When it dries it feels tight like a transparent mask that keeps the moisture in. Now the problem area around the eyes, just do it carefully I do clean around my eyes with the cotton ball with ACV and the alcohol. Just to have clean eyelashes. I have stopped eating gluten, sugar, changed my whole diet really as well as all soaps and detergents in the house, installed a central vacuum system etc, etc. However, I would still occasionally flare up with a horrible rash on my face, arms, back, legs and thighs. It would itch, burn and after scratching it to the point of bleeding, it would look absolutely scary and disgusting really... To the point where I became a recluse. The doctors would prescribe triamcinolone (which would help if I put it on right at the onset of an outbreak), betamethasone for around the eyes and Allegra for the swollen eyes. None if these really helped. My last attack started 2 months ago after a trip to Europe. Nothing seemed to help, even the Kenelog shots did not, and my face felt and looked like someone had poured acid on it. My eyes were swollen to the point where I could not see out of one eye. To those that suffer from this, I don't have to tell you how painful this is and how much it affects your psyche. After 2 months of pain I became depressed and just saw no way out. I could not think of anything else and that is how I found this site.

I tried the 2 tbs of ACV with equal amount of water 3 times a day on an empty stomach. Splashed my face with diluted ACV or put a rag on my face which was soaked in a bowl of ACV for 10 minutes (OMG!!! That stings the first few days:() and then applied VCO(virgin coconut oil) all over my face followed with hypoallergenic moisturizer. Two days later I saw a slight improvement and the stinging was not as severe. Then I added cayenne pepper to the drinking mix and a splash of agave to mellow the vinegar taste. That night I started to sleep like a rock, the dreams were amazing, and after another 3 days the itching was GONE. On the 7th day, when I woke, my face was no longer red and swollen. I felt human again and hopeful for the first time in 8 years of not having to take meds my whole life. YAHOOOOOO!!!! I will continue with the ACV probably forever. I still have a little dry skin but nothing the VCO can't handle. I love that stuff, soooo soothing. To say "thank you" to all of you who contribute to this site seems insufficient. Please know... You change lives. I know, you changed mine."

Went to the doctor & he gave me a cortisone cream, very bad idea, and he was supposed to have dermatology experiance! Anyway it ran out and the rash came back with a vengance. I desperately searched the net for a natural treatment that didnt involve taking potentially very harmful anti acne drugs and came across the suggestions for apple cider vinegar. I have been using organic ACV from the supermarket as well as taking probiotics and doing regular organic yogurt masks and it has taken 5 days to clear up to the point that only I can tell it was ever there. I recon in the next few days it will be totally gone. After I use the ACV I put some aloe on the skin and at night I have been covering the area with "Lucas Paw Paw ointment" because it has been feeling very dry and itchy and I think this is also a really good thing because when I wake up in the morning it looks like it is totally gone. I am soooooo glad that I found this forum and just wanted to add my experiance to the list of successful treatments."

So before my bath this morning, I gently cleaned it with warm water and dabbed ACV over it, yeah it stung a bit, but not that bad, and not for long. Afterhalf an hour I looked in the mirror and I had a differnt face!!!! Its not all gone of course, nothing would work that fast, but the redness was down by about 50%, the soreness has gone 100%, and my skin looks less raw. At first my POD got red and irritated and then it seemed to be clearing up, at least looking better. I used the ACV twice a day for about a week. It started looking worse again, so i finally went to see the Dr. He prescribed me topical Metronidazole Gel. I have been using it for 6 days now and i'm not seeing any sign of it clearing up. It's very aggravating and dry. I put a call into the Dr. to try and get tetracycline. I'm glad the ACV worked for some and wish it had worked for me. Good luck to everyone dealing with POD."

12/18/2008: Jen from Portland, Maine replies: "I also have been suffering off and on from Perioral dermatitis. I was using a steroid cream I had prescribed for something else. Big Mistake. I had to go through the 2 weeks of awful withdrawals, but luckily I had been warned how bad it would be from this site and similar ones. Definitely DELUTE the ACV and make sure you get the ORGANIC as well.

I mostly used this topically, as I find the 2 tbls really hard to drink, even with juice, BUT when I do it really helps out heart burn for like a week at a time just from one dose!:) I use ACV every other day at least. It will burn like heck at first, esp. on delicate skin-my was very bumpy, peely, and pink from withdrawal reaction.

What ever you do...quit your steroids. I was also on Flonase for my mild allergies; I thought back to when I first was prescribed that and it correlates to the first signs of my PD!

Best of luck- It has been about 5 weeks since I quit the cream and started using ACV and I have hardly any red left and only 1 or 2 tiny remnants of a bump. :)

2 more tips:
Crush up an aspirin and mix it into plain organic yogurt-on those bad days- make a soothing mask and relieves the swelling of the bumps a little.

And also rest your face in your clean hands with cold water in the sink. This seems to help a little as well."

Now that i think about all the mornings i would make Green Tea and press the warm tea bag on my face. This helped temporarily, really just stopped the irritating feeling, never took away the discoloration. It has been 48 hours since i first used the ACV applied by a cotton ball (2 morning applications, 2 night applications) My face has not looked so good in years. I am 25 and have had this for about 8 years now. Wow am i happy i learned this trick from you guys. I will be starting my probiotic supplements when they get delivered and will be sure to try out the yogurt too. Thank you so much. If i could see you guys i would hug you :)"

It is now bad like it used to be. Could i be immune to the ACV? It was working so wonderfully, i was so excited and now i am back to square one. Anyone have any suggestions?"
12/12/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello to Jenna from Philadelphia,

You say your rash has been around for 8 years now and you are a 25YO! My first question is do you use makeup, because most girls like to start using makeup around the age of l6 -l7. If so, it could still be an allergy or a reaction to makeup.

I suggest you leave off all makeup and all soap for several days to give your skin a chance to heal itself, if this is the case. Washing the face with a wash cloth soaked in vinegar to get all residue of soap & makeup off for the first day or two & see what happens. If you still have the rash, remember the dermatologist's rule of thumb:a (If it's wet dry it, if it's dry, wet it) and proceed accordingly. One of the most drying agents is good old magnesium sulfate (epsom salts) and I have had very good results with a saturated solution of apple cider vinegar and epsom salts. You make a saturated solution by dissolving the solid in the liquid until no more will dissolve. If the rash is wet or purulent, just knock the tops off and swab it out with the saturated solution of vinegar/epsom salts 3 or 4 times per day and they will soon dry up, if they're wet. If they're dry just use a good A&D vitamin ointment or moisturizing lotion on it."

[NAY]  10/30/2008: Maria from San Francisco, California writes: "After the dermatitis cleared up the ACV seemed to make it worse. I gave up all the doctor's medication and I also stopped all the self treatment because I was lookin really bad and it hurt by this point. After a lot of thinking I decided to find a really good dermatologist and see what happens. I did find a really well known doctor and the day I saw him I gave him a little resumee of my condition and symptoms for the last 6 yers. After taking a sample to the lab he said that it is actually an ATOPIC DERMATITIS meaning ECZEMA. He also said he found a type of bacteria that usualy lives on the human body anyway but it was more concentrated where my iritation and lesions were. He gave me low dose cortison creams and he said that in order to have a normal life I would have to use this as minimal as I can for a long time. He also said that for some people it goes away on it's own and for others it never cures. So I decided to have a normal life without living in a glass globe. I am better now then I was on the natural self treatment. I even did a liver cleanse and a Candida cleanse but no change. Now I am using the steroids and I have started to use make up again. I feel ok and if I put the creams on when I feel an out break I have no issues. My advice is that you must really find out what kind of condition you relly have without guessing on your own. If none of the natural treatments work do not give up and find a good doctor. I have not heard of people dieing because of some medicated creams. I was more stressed when I was trying to buy all the organic natural miracle cures. I am convinced that the natural plants have many good healthy uses and I am still buying some of them. I still use organic creams and cosmetics. Now that I have my eczema under controll I am not stressed out anymore. I hope my feed back helps. I think this site is extremly helpfull for many people. I will continue reading all the testemonies."

10/18/2008: Elijah from Bay Shore, US writes: "Hi my name is Elijah and I have a question. I have dermatitis in my left hand for eleven years now. I have the apple cider vinegar for a different problem I am having with my appearance. My question is how do I apply it to my hand for best result, and being that I have had this disease this long can I expect to see results."

10/19/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "To Elijah from Bay Shore: Hello Elijah, I just use my apple cider straight from the bottle for problems like this. Just sop a washcloth with it and make sure you get it all over the hand at least 3 or 4 times a day. If you don't notice a difference after a week or so you might add using it after every handwashing, as this washes the vinegar off each time. I would just let that hand air dry instead of wiping dry after applying the apple cider vinegar. You didn't mention whether this is a "weepy" rash or a dry one. If dry, use the vinegar alone. If it is a weepy rash you might want to make a saturated solution of vinegar and epsom salts. Apply this with a cotton ball several times a day and let it dry on the hand. It works well on weepy rashes."

[YEA]  09/13/2008: Teresa from London, London writes: "I had to write and leave feedback as another testimonial that ACV is a miracle cure. I have suffered with Dermatitis/ Rosacea (the doctors couldn't decide what it was) on my forehead for 6 years. I used steroid creams for years that controlled it but never cured it but even they stopped having an effect in the last year or so. I saw ACV testemonials on this website so I tried it. Within a day or 2 the ACV I applied had stopped the spots appearing, the the redness and swelling went down. I use it every night and i'm now free of all symptoms - it only took about a week to cure it all together! It's so so frustrating that doctors don't/ can't tell you about these things. Thank you so much to this website - It's changing a lot of people's lives."
