04/05/2009: T from Maryland, USA writes: "Things That Make You Go Hmm

Department of Health and Human Services Approves Fictitious Medical Device Review Board Led by a Dead Dog

"(NaturalNews) Just how trustworthy are medical review boards that review and approve medical devices? In a Government Accountability Office (GAO) sting, investigators were able to invent and register a fictitious review board with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), complete with a fictitious panel of doctors and a canine president named "Truper Dawg" (named after a real pet dog that had long since passed away).
...
But that's not all: To check out the credibility of existing Independent Review Boards (IRBs), the GAO invented a fictitious medical product called Adhesiabloc -- an adhesive gel used as a kind of "stomach superglue" following surgery. A proposal to begin a clinical trial of this adhesive gel on humans was submitted to an FDA-recognized IRB company, and the company approved it! This, despite the fact that the clinical trial called for pouring one liter of this adhesive gel into the stomach of patients."

02/02/2009: Earth Clinic writes: "Traffic Noise Causes Heart Attacks:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/trafficnoisecausesheartattacks

"People living in residential areas with high levels of noise from road traffic appear to suffer more heart attacks than people living in quieter neighborhoods, according to a new study by researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

Goran Pershagen, who led the study, said 1571 people from the Stockholm area who had suffered heart attacks between 1992 and 1994 were compared with a control group from the same area. The addresses of all the individuals were indentified and the level of noise estimated.

Exposure to air pollution and other heart attack risk factors were also gathered using questionnaires and interviews, the researchers said. Once people with impaired hearing or exposure to other sources of noise had been eliminated from the study, the researchers found that there was a 40 percent higher risk of a heart attack in people exposed to traffic noise exceeding 50 decibels - a relatively quiet level of noise; heavy traffic is usually measured at between 80 and 90 decibels.

"More research will be needed to establish a definite correlation between road traffic noise and [heart attacks], but our results are supported by other studies showing the cardiovascular effects of noise," Pershagen said.

The possible link between noise and heart attacks should be taking into account when planning new roads and residential areas, he added. The study was published in the journal Epidemiology.""

01/11/2009: Dr Edo McGowan from Santa Barbara, California writes: "A major thread that runs through these comments seems to be "how did I acquire this bug?" For the average consumer, much of the current food one buys and brings into the kitchen is coming from confined animal feeding operations where antibiotics are given for enhancement of weight gain or reduction of disease. The result is antibiotic resistance and thus the food is contaminated during slaughter. The process of cooking usually kills these resistant pathogens, but in the interim, kitchen surfaces are contaminated. Rusin and Gerba as well as Boone and Gerba have published on the transfer of pathogens from contaminated surfaces to fingers to mouth.

People innocently bring these pathogens home, but once there they can be spread all over the house. Cleaning surfaces with a solution of bleach is just one of the necessary preventative measures needed in this modern society.

Another source of spread is reclaimed water. Valerie Harwood, et al looked at sewer plants across the U.S. that were producing reclaimed water for use in municipal irrigation projects like parks and golf courses. This water is also permitted for irrigation of leafy greens consumed raw. Harwood noted pathogens in all samples tested and concluded that the standards under which this water was being produced were not protective of public health. Thus there are several processes that are presumed to be under the guidance of federal or state regulators that are failing to protect the public health.

My group looked at reclaimed water that met state standards and we ran tests on it from two different cities that use it for school playing fields. We found multi-antibiotic resistant pathogens. In one case to 11 of the 12 antibiotics in our Kirby Bauer suite, including resistance to vancomycin.

01/10/2009: PR from Houston, Texas writes: "Maintain Freedom to Purchase Vitamins, Minerals & Herbs

This one is easy and fast just click on the link below and it will take you to Obama's site to voice your opinion on being able to purchase vitamins and herbs, and not water down versions. Next click on the blue box (Of The People, By the People) submit your thoughts. If this is important to you please share this with others.

Click on this link: http://change.gov/agenda/health_care_agenda/

You will be connected to a page on the www.change.gov site where a blue box headlined "Of the people, by the people" urges you to click in and submit your ideas. Colleague Jan Schwartz, LMT, a past chair of the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation, shared that he has seen evidence that the ideas don't fall into a void. Obama staffers are known to actually respond. Go and contribute! More on the Obama grassroots strategy is available at this Washington Post article.

[YEA]  01/11/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Thanks to JL for the alert on using "change the government site" to click on. I just left it and it is simple to use. I urge everyone that wants to retain the privilege of having a site like EC and its helpful information, as well as the privilege of being able to read about and buy the safer alternatives of vitamins, minerals, supplements and herbals to voice their opinions there very quickly. The route the FDA is taking now could even conceivably be used to abolish internet sites like EC or the Cancertutor.com.

Now is the time to arise and sing out & let your desires be known."

[YEA]  01/14/2009: Deirdre from Atlanta, GA replies: "An email I received today from the Obama-Biden Transition Team that some folks might be interested in...

"We wanted to tell you about a new feature on Change.gov which lets you bring your ideas directly to the President.

It's called the Citizen's Briefing Book, and it's an online forum where you can share your ideas, and rate or offer comments on the ideas of others.

The best-rated ones will rise to the top, and after the Inauguration, we'll print them out and gather them into a binder like the ones the President receives every day from experts and advisors. If you participate, your idea could be included in the Citizen's Briefing Book to be delivered to President Obama."

Subject: Huge Victory for Health Freedom in the Making!

Mouse Warriors On the March:
Our Actions Are Bearing Fruit!

Change.org influences Change.gov: Health Freedom Moves from Unofficial Site to Obama's Official Site!

We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary response you made to our urgent appeal day before yesterday, when it appeared that Health Freedom was being intentionally pushed off the "Top Ten" on Change.org.

You responded so powerfully that instead of falling below 9th Place, we rose up, all the way to 4th Place! Thank you! Now we are within just a few votes of overtaking #3.

Your actions have created enough pressure at the unofficial site, www.Change.org/ideas/view/health_freedom to bring Health Freedom to 4th place!

But Wait! There's More!

With that upsurge in public support, the OFFICIAL Obama site, Change.gov, (http://citizensbriefingbook.change.gov/ideas/viewIdea.apexp?id=087800000004oSw&srPos=2&srKp=087) has listed Health Freedom as an idea for you to vote on there, too.

The top ranking ideas there will be compiled into a "Citizens Briefing Book" and presented to Obama.

You did it! You got us into the second round of voting in the unofficial Change.org poll in just over 24 hours and then, even before Inauguration Day, you got us onto the official Change.gov Obama site.

You ARE good at this! So good, in fact, that now we get to vote on the official Obama site even before the inauguration. Voting at Change.org ends 5 PM Eastern on January 15, 2009 - that's tomorrow - and right now we are just 7 votes shy of 3rd Place! It's still important to cast your vote there AND move on to change.gov.

Click here (http://www.healthfreedomusa.org/?p=1754) for instructions or here (http://citizensbriefingbook.change.gov/ideas/viewIdea.apexp?id=087800000004oSw&srPos=2&srKp=087) to go directly to Change.gov to vote if you have already voted on Change.org.

Folks, this is about public pressure. We know exactly how bought-and-sold public policy is. But we also know that in this arena there are two forces: money (them) and voice (us). They have the money, we have the voices. We are using our resources magnificently here. Let's keep going.

If you haven't voted at www.Change.org/ideas/view/health_freedom, please do so NOW... if you have any email addresses that haven't been voted, please VOTE NOW! Please tell anyone you know to vote! Then take just a moment longer and vote at Change.gov, (http://citizensbriefingbook.change.gov/ideas/viewIdea.apexp?id=087800000004oSw&srPos=2&srKp=087)

Step 3: Viralize!

Now send this information to your entire email letting them know that they have helped to move Health Freedom up a notch in public perception and we are moving forward strongly together. Ask them to visit www.HealthFreedomUSA.org so they can sign up for free, secure Health Freedom Action eAlerts, too. And thanks!"

EC: FANTASTIC!!

Note: you need to create an account with change.gov in order to "Vote Up"

PRODUCT SAFETY WEBSITE

06/05/2009: DJ from Pdx, Or writes: "I wanted to suggest a website for product reference called Skin Deep www.cosmeticdatabase.com These people research all sorts of products and rate them from 1-10 on product safety. For example Sensodyne Anticavity toothpaste (what I used to use) is rated a 4 - Moderate hazard. The site then gives a list of ingredients in the product that are linked to thinks like Cancer. Developmental/reproductive toxicity, allergies, etc. About half way down the page it lists each ingredient and scores each of those from 1-10 as far as hazardous. A person can check out their products to see just how healthy of a purchase they made. I was really shocked at a few items I had thinking they were okay for a person and it turned out they were really bad. It seems like a really good reference site if you want to find safe products."
