White Vinegar

Our Doberman was sprayed in the face by a skunk on Thursday of last week. The smell was so incredibly strong that his eyes were watering and the smell took over our living room immediately, because the skunk sprayed him right in front of our picture window in the front yard.

Living in the Midwest and having had dogs for 35 years, this rivals anything dead or otherwise disgusting any dog I've ever owned has rolled in or come into contact with in my life.

I tried 1/3 fresh squeezed lemon juice to 2/3 warm water in a misting spray bottle and drenching him in it and it didn't touch it. 2 hours later after his skin had completely dried, I tried baking soda and letting it sit and then wet wiping that off. Nope!

My husband finally returned from work travels on Saturday and gave him a bath with Dawn dish soap and then sprayed some natural dog deodorizer on him that normally makes him smell wonderful, all to little avail.

After the bath, he was finally tolerable to let stay in the house instead of the heated garage without permeating the house, but still took our breath away when we got anywhere near his face.

WHAT FINALLY WORKED TO TAKE THE SMELL COMPLETELY AWAY?

Pouring undiluted plain old White Vinegar on a clean dry sponge and wiping his face with it last night. I did not dilute this nor did I wipe it off. This morning I got up and smelled his face and he smells normal. I can finally give him kisses on his face again! :)

What made me think of this, was over 20 years ago I got a sunburn so bad that I looked like a lobster before the sunburn had really set in. I had friend that worked at a tanning bed and she said to put full strength white vinegar on a sponge and it would take the sting out of the burn and it worked instantly! I no longer hurt and it took the burn felling out of my skin. I let it dry and didn't rinse it off and it didn't hurt my skin in the least.

Full strength white vinegar is also excellent for scalding burns. Just let it soak on the burn for 20 to 30 minutes and it will take the sting away, even on 3rd degree burns. I know because I've had scalding grease burns.

So, you'll smell like a vinegrette salad for a little while. That is a small price to pay for all it can do to remedy what ails you!
