Cats and kittens can suffer from feline respiratory disease, which is an infection caused by a virus or bacteria. Natural remedies for feline respiratory disease include apple cider vinegar, colloidal silver and l-lysine.

What are the Symptoms of Feline Respiratory Disease?

Feline respiratory disease will give a cat symptoms similar to symptoms people have when they have a cold or the flu including:

  • Sneezing
  • Discharge from the nose
  • Conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye)
  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Lethargy

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar fights viruses and bacteria.

The easiest and most gentle way to use apple cider vinegar is topically. This video will show you how!

Alternately, you can add apple cider vinegar to your cat’s food, or give it to him with a syringe. For dosing information for cats, see this page.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is effective against bacteria and viruses. It is also tasteless and easy to give to most cats. You can simply mix 1 teaspoon colloidal silver in your cat’s food twice daily. If he is not eating well, you can give him 5 ml by syringe 2-3 times a day.

If your cat’s eyes are irritated, red, or have a discharge, you can add 1 drop of colloidal silver to each eye twice a day for two days.

L-Lysine

L-Lysine is an amino acid that supports the body in its fight against infection. You can give your cat 1/8 teaspoon of l-lysine each day, mixed in his food. If he is not eating, mix it with water and give it to him in a syringe.

Humidify

If you cat is suffering with congestion, a warm mist humidifier near his sleeping area can make him more comfortable. Be sure his sleeping quarters are warm, comfortable, and draft free.

Feline respiratory diseases are contagious. If one of your cats comes down with a respiratory virus, it would be wise to go ahead and treat his companions as well. The natural remedies listed above are safe enough to use daily for cats.

Dear Earthclinic,

I have an older cat that has had a bad problem with her sinuses. We tried everything to help her and nothing worked. I came here to Earth Clinic to see what I could do for her. I tried the L-Lysine 500mg as advised. Just one treatment and the cat could breath without trouble the next day! I am so amazed! I will give her this product 3 times a week as advised. I used 500mg (I crushed the pill) and rolled moist cat food in the crushed L-Lysine. Our cat didn't like the taste because she left a quarter of the cat food. (She loves this cat food) But it worked anyway! The next time I gave her the dose in her moist cat food she ate it all! I can't get over how well it worked on my cat! We nearly put her to sleep because she was suffering so much. Thank you Earth Clinic!
