I had fifth disease as an adult fifteen years ago. My doctor was baffled. I basically self diagnosed as he had never seen it before. My teacher friend told me it was going through the classrooms in her elementary school. The kids all had the slapped face look to them and were sent home sick. Turns out it is a much different situation in an adult that never had it as a child. In an adult, it causes liver issues and stiff hands. I could not make a fist in either hand and my liver levels had skyrocketed. There was a minor rash as well. When I found out about the liver situation, I just started to take some milk thistle and it all went away. It was amazing. Since it is usually a pediatric disease, there is no reason my doctor would have known that.

Thank you for sharing your story! My husband was finally diagnosed with Parvovirus B19 after months of suffering hand and body aches. It came through on blood tests when testing for Lymes and other autoimmune issues. He can barely use his hands and the Milk Thistle may be the answer, along with a liver cleanse!

Luckily, I have never had a return of fifth disease although I have read that it can stay dormant sort of like shingles. I now take milk thistle every day. I don't know for sure if that is what has kept it at bay, but I certainly do not want it back! I hope your husband sees an end to this issue. It is scary to have your hands swell up. Best wishes!!
