Light Changes to Improve Sleep

A month or two ago I discovered that you can buy light bulbs that do not emit blue light. There are some that emit only red light. Others have an option to give off a white light that has no blue light or it gives off an amber, firelike glow. (There is a remote) I have put these lights in my bedroom and living room and even a red light in my bathroom for at night. I also try to be off my phone an hour before bed.

I already knew about myself that if I start turning off lights in the evening, I feel more relaxed. I think all the light makes me feel like I should still be working. The lower lights, especially the amber lights, make me feel like relaxing, talking to family and reading a book.

It wasn't long before I noticed I was sleeping longer stretches at night before getting up for the bathroom. It also seems to take me less time to fall asleep, even though I am always ready for bed! After a while, I noticed I was having or at least remembering more of my dreams. I had stopped wearing my smart watch at night because it is so bright if it comes on. Before I changed my lighting habits, it said that my sleep was good, but that my REM sleep and light sleep were not as good as could be. I wore the watch again last night to check. I was delighted to find that yes, I am getting more light sleep and REM sleep, and I am still getting lots of deep sleep.

I also try to get outside for some sunlight asap when I get up and I don't light the whole house up right away.

Meanwhile, I found that my 15 year old son was having trouble falling asleep. He is off his phone by 9pm and then reads a book. But he was reading by a very bright overhead light. I switched him to an amber/no blue light floor lamp. The very next day he was excited to report falling asleep much faster and that has continued with his new routine.

These are the light bulbs:

I use the red ones for the bathroom and the amber ones everywhere else.

Hope this helps others!
