Stuttering Remedies

| Modified on Jan 13, 2018

Stuttering is a common speech disorder that involves repetition of a sound or word. While the condition typically corrects itself, some individuals experience the condition even into adulthood. Natural treatment options and therapies can assist in the treatment of the condition.

What is Stuttering?

Also called stammering, stuttering is a speech disorder characterized by the repetition of syllables or phrases, making speech choppy and difficult to understand. Individuals affected by the condition know what they want to communicate but have a difficult time actually saying it.

Common symptoms include difficulty starting a word or phrase and repetition of a specific sound, syllable or word. These symptoms may be accompanied by rapid eye blinks, tremors in the lips or jaw and tension or tightness in the face and upper body. A variation in normal speech development, inherited brain abnormalities, stroke, traumatic brain injury and mental health problems are considered contributing factors to the disorder.

Home Remedies for Vocal Repetition

Treatments for stuttering hinge on correcting the underlying condition causing the issue. As such, a number of common nutritional supplements are effective for treating the condition. Magnesium, baking soda and vitamin C are all effective treatments for different forms of stuttering.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a vital nutrient involved in many of the bodily processes. A mineral that helps regulate blood pressure and heart rhythm, magnesium helps relax the body, which can reduce stuttering. This nutrient also helps ease the tension in overstimulated muscles, which also helps treat the condition.

Baking Soda

As one of the causes of stuttering is a lack of oxygen in the body, baking soda is also an effective treatment. Baking soda functions to oxidize the body, which enhances oxygen absorption and use. As the body and brain receive more usable oxygen, stammering diminishes.

Vitamin C

Underlying viruses affecting the neurotransmitters can also contribute to stuttering, making vitamin C an appropriate treatment option. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that breaks down free radicals and eliminates infection. As the underlying issues are treated, stuttering also improves.

Stuttering is a condition that impacts an individual’s self-esteem as well as his or her ability to communicate effectively with others. As such, treating the condition and eradicating vocal repetitions is crucial to an individual’s wellbeing.

Hi Ted,

I wish you really all the best. One simple question : why I don't stutter when I have a cold or flu???? It is really a wonderful experience!!!! Is it because of the vocal cord becoming wet from mucous or what?? I tried to find anything out from the medical literature here and there but to no avail!!!! please advice or help me in the research work.. It is really unbeleivable how I can fluently talk whenever I have a flu or cold?? I'm sure it has something to do with the mucus or the wet stuff in the vocal cord but I COULD NOT SCIENTIFICALLY tie it therewith!! Is there anything else you would like to add regarding stuttering other than the material posted in the stuttering page in earthclinic???

Eagerly awiting your reply...All the best Sir and take care.

A wonder if the stuttering stops because of how having a stuffy nose effects breathing. I had a friend who stuttered and went through training to breath a certain way which was said to reduce stuttering. He didn't really apply the technique, so i don't know if it would have helped, but it was interesting.

I also do not stutter when I have a cold. Unfortunately (for speech), I have only had two in the past ten years. I have read several people stutter when they get angry. That is another time I do not stutter--AT ALL. Does anyone else have this issue?

I have been through several therapies and all have been helpful. My speech has gone from barely fluent to mostly fluent. I just began taking 500 mg of Magnesium a few days ago and it seems to be working. I know this may be similar to a placebo effect, but I will take it. Has anyone else had success with Magnesium?

Sorry for all of the questions. I am new to any sort of stuttering forum.

I hear that Transdermal Magnesium (magnesium chloride) is one of the best forms of magnesium to use because it is more readily absorbed into the blood stream. It is a spray that has an oily feel that should be mixed with about a Tbsp of water per 5 sprays or so to avoid a stinging sensation. After diluting, it should be rubbed into the bottom of the feet with a cottonball.

To increase the Mg consumption even further, the Transdermal Mg can be added to juice in small amounts and consumed. I am told that the best way to determine the right dosage is to progressively up the dosage until it triggers a bowel movement, then back up to the previous dose. Thereafter, use as frequently as your body dictates a need.

Mg has a natural calming & relaxing effect on the body (which is why it works well as a laxative... Because it relaxes the bowels). So, perhaps it relaxes the vocal cords as well...

I have a cousin with whom I've lost contact who stuttered badly through childhood and was greatly challenged with social interaction on a personal and professional level as a young adult. She is the reason I want to share on this forum, as I was a firsthand witness to her struggles.

I do know that Mg definitely has helped me with other issues (charlie horses during pregnancy and occassional constipation), so I hope that it will be helpful to those with speech issues, as well.

Also, to help Mg work even more efficiently in its relaxing effects, it is good to eat healthy and avoid things like caffeine, smoking, junk food and the like. Hope this helps.

Hi Ted, I'm honored to know you sir. This is a fact because you taught me a whole lot. It is very giving from you to publish material to the benefit of mankind that not too many people dare or want to publish. I wanted you to know that I have treated people in this part of the world with innovative cures of yours since I'm engaged in alternative medicine for more than 20 years but this is my side job where I don't charge people anything but I'm happy to advise them in all aspects of health. However, I have a personal issue concerning myself. Since I'm 8 years old I started stuttering in my speech although it is not severe after being inflicted with Pneumonia and chest infection at that time and after being cured then unfortunately my normal speech was impaired but before this it used to talk very normally, and now I'm 44 years old no one really knows I have this defect of stuttering because I usually talk normally but it happens that some times I feel my chest is locked and I have difficulties in speech and I stutter specially when I'm angry or have tight business schedule and exhausted. I think it has something to do with neurotransmitters and may be brain's speech center defect. I will be grateful if you could advise me from your vast practical experience what is the undeclared cures for my case."

05/24/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "If speech stuttering occurs when angry, exhausted or overworked it is the issue of capillary circulation gets constricted fromt the body's acidosis, which happens often whenever that conditon exists.

Minerals that causes the brain to have a relaxing effect, especially the macromineral, magnesium will help. Baking soda and lime juice (or baking soda and citric acid) will reduce the bodys excess serum calcium that brings about both contriction, platelets clotting and stickiness which happens because of lowered oxygen.

Studies showed that body's oxygen requirement is quite high whenever exhaustion exists, but platelets stickiness can also be initiated whenever calcium is high in the blood serum. A simple proof of principle can be shown easily: blood banks add sodium citrate (it is a resultant reaction of baking soda and citric acid) to remove excess acidity and calcium to prevent clotting in blood given by donors. If this is not done, the blood which is received by the recipient causes clotting and death. The same can occur whenever the body is excessively exhausted.

A pneumonia or certain viruses tend to exists along the neuratransmitter if the affliction of colds happens long enough and this is why it has left its damage path. Vitamin C sodium ascorbate will at least do some repairs, lecithin, and some vitamin E antioxidants to reduce the body's oxygen requirement.

In event of an unknown micromineral imbalances, and electrolytic imbalance, a simple means is to add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in all drinking water. This is especially important whenever people do sports, physical exertion, lives in hot water, where electrolyte depletion can lead to death. Most publicly well known electrolytic deficiency is potassium, but in practice I have found magnesium to be a far common problem. However, the good news is that sea salt supplies most of them thereby, at the very least elmininating most of the problems of bicarbonates, magnesium, potassium and many other microminerals all at the same time.

In event the body is overloaded with heavy metals, such as iron, this can initiate free radicals and they do exists, but are most unhealthy when the body is overexerted. Therefore certain supplements will remove heavy metals, although each removes them differently on different metals that most should be given a chance to try it, such as, chlorella, chinese parsley, oil pullling (between brushing of teeth), and N Acetyl Cysteine.

In my experience I have seen dramatic reductions of stuttering just by looking at alkalization alone. This is the major point where the medical community missed out, and the remedy is simply 8 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon or lime and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Another formula I used is 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid to be useful also.

In some cases of people who live in mainland away from the sea, there is some cases these people rarely eat sea food and seaweed or kelp. In this case iodine supplements taking kelp for example would help a lot. Most glandular systems, will function better in presence of iodine. The theory why and how it works is beyond this email, but it should be remembered that iodine and vitamin B complex tend to help synergisticall in such case. They need not be taken everyday, but in event of exhaustion, this is when the body needs vitamin B complex, iodine, magnesium and alkalization the most. I have found whenever I have the colds, by body burns 4 times more bicarbonates and other alkalization formulas than usual, which shows that the body need it to fight off the offending virus. In natural system, most microbes, especially viral proteins don't survive in alkaline environment.

There are certain minerals that may effect stuttering which are the lack manganese, copper, zinc, and iron. Or excess of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, for example. In certain developed countries, getting hair mineral analysis will tell you what is causing the problem. But if this is unaffordable in third world countries, then looking at dietary habits can give some clues. Not eating cocoa for a very long for example is high in copper, may mean lack of copper. Not eating at all sea foods and seaweed, can lead to iodine defiency. Rarely eating seeds, of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, for example can lead to magnesium or zinc deficiency. Not eating liver, or medium cooked red meats and fruits can lead to lowered iron problems. Fruits are high in vitamin C and helps the body's bioavailability and utilization of iron.

While I know many people who know a lot more than me about a lot of treatment. They will never tell anyone about it and will go to the grave if they have to. And some who do know, sometimes use my own information I posted to sell back to other people.

I don't have any opinion to what they do that much. It is counterproductive for me just to think about it. At least for me, it is more productive for me just to continue to do research and post remedies as they come by and just leave the editorials to someone else.

And yes there's a lot of corrupted mainstream medical practice out there. Things will eventually unfold itself as remedies work better and people will know it themselves without the need to be told about it."

Getting your iodine via seaweed -

"At the Asian food market, look for, especially organic: Agar, Dulse, Hijiki, Irish Moss (which saved thousands of people from starvation during the potato famine of 19th century Ireland), Kelp, Kombu, Laver, Nori, Sloke, and Wakame. Put them together and you have a low calorie sea-vegetable salad! Seaweed can also be used in seasonings, soups, teas, and assorted food recipes.

If you have no inclination to eat vegetables let alone sea vegetables, you can still benefit by getting them in easy to take supplement form as in tablets, capsules, or liquid extract. In that way you can also get the smaller algae forms of seaweed like chlorella or spirulina. You would be getting plenty of beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and iodine."

You mentioned a lemon juice and baking soda method to observe "dramatic reductions in stuttering". Stuttering has been studied for hundreds of years, so I'm curious what your claiming here. I've done significant reading on this and I've never heard of this in my life. Can you elaborate on your findings, who did you observe stuttering less? How often do stutterers have to take your baking soda lemon juice concoction? Can you be very specific about the studies you have done, because I highly doubt that this works.

I started stuttering severely since 2009 I didn't know the cause but now after 3 years of research after no help from doctors, chiros etc I found the cause. I had shoulder injury back in 2007 where I felt numbness from under my left collarbone around to shoulder blade area and down to my last pinky fingers. I suspect it nerve pinching or damage. Anyway I found this excercise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-LlDPteGR4 that helped me improve a lot and reduced the numbess and discomfort on the left side of my upper body. I am now 70% back to my old self. I also stopped going to gym for the last 2 months because excercise was aggravating my problem.

For anyone who stammers. Try the exercise given in the video above posted by @Abs.

But before you do, read a paragraph of text out loud. Then do the exercise for 30 seconds and finally read another paragraph of text out loud.

I personally noticed a remarkable improvement.
