Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome is the result of the development of a sore in the rectum or the muscular tube connected to the colon through which stool passes as it exits the body. While the exact symptoms vary depending on the severity of the condition, several common symptoms have been identified. Constipation, a sensation of inadequate passing of stool and fullness of the pelvic region are common. Additional symptoms include mucus in the stool, fecal incontinence, pain in the rectum, anal sphincter spasms, bloody stools and straining during bowel movements are all common.
While it is not clear what actually causes solitary rectal ulcer syndrome, research suggests that trauma or injury to the rectum are the cause. Contributing factors may include impacted bowel, constipation, anal intercourse, certain medications, migraine treatments and irregular tightening of the pelvic muscles.
The exact treatment of the condition depends on the severity of the syndrome. Most individuals experience mild symptoms and are able to achieve relief through lifestyle changes. Some individuals with more severe or significant damage may require more intensive treatment regimens. In any case, dietary changes and lifestyle remedies offer at least some level of treatment for affected individuals.
Behavior therapy helps individuals learn to relax the pelvic muscles and avoid straining during bowel movements. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day and increasing the amount of fiber in the diet are important dietary changes to make. Daily exercise can also help regulate the system and relieve pain and inflammation.
While the condition is not well understood at this point, solitary rectal ulcer syndrome is a condition that affects several individuals. Adding additional greens to the diet, increasing fluid intake and adding regular exercise to an everyday routine can go a long way toward treating the condition.
