Occipital Neuralgia
I have a hypothesis of another cause of this condition. I have notice that I can go long periods without any problems. I think it may be a sciatica type of problem except the pain runs upward.. Most sciatica is caused by herniated disc condition. This may be the case for neck also. Look under sciatica then under hyaluronic acid for my posts. The cell degeneration may cause inflammation in the C2 area of the neck which in turn touched the nerve. This may be a more permanent solution.
