Natural remedies for bladder stones include apple cider vinegar, herbs, and prevention of stone formation in the future. Bladder stones, made up of crystallized minerals in the bladder, can cause pain, bloody or cloudy urine, and difficulty urinating. It is possible to have bladder stones with no symptoms at all.

Are Bladder Stones and Kidney Stones the Same Thing?

Bladder stones and kidney stones are not the same thing. It might seem that bladder stones are kidney stones that have relocated into the bladder. A kidney stone can move on to the bladder, but then it is a kidney stone that is in the bladder. Bladder stones are formed in the bladder, and kidney stones are formed in the kidney. Each type of stone may have some of the same minerals in them.

The causes of these two different types of stones are usually not the same. Bladder stones are usually caused by insufficient emptying of the bladder due to a primary health condition. Kidney stones are usually caused by mineral imbalances. Both types of stones can be caused by insufficient water intake and nutritional deficiencies. Both types of stones can also benefit from some of the same treatments.

What Causes Bladder Stones?

It is easier for bladder stones to form in the bladder under certain conditions. Men with prostrate enlargement can have difficulty emptying their bladders completely. Concentrated urine in the bladder, resulting from this problem, is a breeding ground for bladder stones. If you have nerve problems that affects your bladder (neurogenic bladder) then you may be at risk for bladder stones. Nerve disorders like stroke, Parkinson's disease, and spinal cord injuries can make it difficult to completely empty the bladder, and increase the likelihood of stone formation in the bladder.

Home Treatments for Bladder Stones

Lemon Juice and Olive Oil

Lemon Juice and Olive oil can be taken together to cure bladder stones. 2 ounces of fresh lemon juice and 2 ounces of a quality olive oil are blended together. You can add a dash of salt to improve the flavor. You will notice that this concoction sounds like a salad dressing recipe, and indeed, it tastes like salad dressing. This remedy should be used 2-3 times a day on an empty stomach. Always follow this mixture with a full glass of water. It can take a few days for the stone to pass.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, consumed in water daily, can help dissolve stones over time.

Chanca Piedra

Chanca Piedra is an herb that is also called, "Stone Breaker" for good reason. Chanca Piedra, taken in capsule, tincture or tea form has helped many people to dissolve a variety of types of stones naturally.

Bladder Stone Prevention

It is important to deal with the cause of bladder stones to prevent them in the future. Even if the cause of your bladder stones is a chronic disease (like Parkinson's or a stroke) you can do several things to try to prevent stones from forming in the future.

Stay well hydrated with quality liquids. Most people know that they should be drinking a lot of water each day; few people do this. Reduce your coffee intake. Limit consumption of sodas and energy drinks. Herbal tea is a good option if you like your fluids to have a taste. You can also add a squeeze of fresh lemon to your glass of water to improve its taste. The lemon has health benefits as well. Fresh fruits will also help with your liquid intake. Watermelon is especially hydrating and good for the bladder. (Including the seeds - you can slowly chew them and eat them when you are enjoying your watermelon.)

A tablespoon of raw and organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of cranberry juice (without artificial sweeteners!) each day is a great drink for your bladder.

To get rid of bladder stones take 5 drops of Equisetum hyemale (horsetail) tincture in one teaspoon of water 4 times a day. It works wonderfully.

Hi Dave,

The herbal supplement Chanca Piedra, on EC is generally considered a very good supplement for kidney stones and sometimes for gall stones. It is thought to act as a preventative based on studies and as a means of breaking large stones into smaller stones that can be passed with minimal to no pain.

Here is a link to a typical product:

Chanca Piedra Herbal Benefits (, I buy swanson brand and they run out of it a lot so I buy more than one to keep around for my daily use of borax in my water it releases calcium from soft tissues and that can be painful. Stones are usually from dehydration. Hope you get quick results.

Blessings, charity

Does anyone know if horsetail is a slow melting or rapid release of the bladder stone?

6mm bladder stone: GONE!!

I have to admit I was a little sceptical and the thought of downing shots of a solution of olive oil and lemon juice made me want to gag..the reviews (and the pain! ) convinced me to give it a try. I am 14 weeks pregnant and have always suffered from cystitis, UTIs and kidney infections but since becoming pregnant, I felt like I had a permanent UTI, despite a course of antibiotics. My pregnancy ultrasound, the sonography spotted a 6mm stone in my bladder. The pain and symptoms were getting progressively worse but all the medics told me they couldn't do anything as I was pregnant. The thought of enduring this for the next 6months was awful. Then your website! Did four lots of oil and lemon yesterday and another two today. Whereas yesterday, the pain seemed to ease after each shot for a while, this afternoon it felt like it was worsening and had a very 'sharp' feeling down below. Went to the loo and thought my urine was a little pink so worried it may contain blood. Drank lots more warm water and then collected the next lot in a container to see if there was blood present and there was the stone!! Didn't even feel it! Hope that is the end of it and good riddance! But thank god for your website!
