A common spice with a sweet but spicy flavor, ginger root is often used in cooking. However, its common purposes extend to the world of medicine as well. Considered a calming spice, ginger is used to treat a variety of conditions ranging from gastrointestinal distress to arthritis.
What is Ginger Root?
Typically described as aromatic, pungent and spicy, ginger is a spice often used in Asian stir fries as well as several fruit and vegetable dishes. Readily available in most grocery stores, ginger is a common herb with a variety of purposes.
The rhizome or underground root is the part of the spice that is actually used from the plant. This root typically appears yellow to white or red in color and is covered with a brown skin. While previously used almost singly in treating gastrointestinal issues, current research has expanded the applications of ginger to include a much wider variety of conditions.
Health Benefits of Ginger
Ginger root contains a variety of compounds that make it an effective health aid. Among the most effective of those components are gingerol and shogaol. These compounds function to support tissue regeneration, diminish inflammation and reduce infection. With these and other active components, ginger is used for treating and preventing a wide range of conditions.
Scientific research has reinforced ginger as an effective health treatment in numerous applications. One study suggests that ginger is one of the most effective preventative treatments for certain types of cancer including colon cancer, as it significantly reduces inflammation throughout the body. The spice has also been proven to relieve muscle pain and fatigue. Additionally, ginger can be used to treat a number of gastrointestinal disorders as well as autoimmune diseases such as arthritis.
Ginger is also an effective preventative treatment. Taken as a daily supplement, ginger can prevent liver damage caused by certain medication, hypertension, painful period symptoms, migraines and others.
In any of its forms, ginger is an effective treatment option for a range of conditions. The spice can be taken as a supplement or added to a preferred food or beverage with the same health benefits.

Ginger is well known for it's calming effect on the stomach. If the esophageal sphincter is doing it's job the reflux doesn't happen and I suspect that it is allowed to function better when the stomach is churning in a calmer manner.
I make the tea by putting a few slices of fresh ginger into a thermos and let it steep before taking the first cup. I usually have around 3 & 4 cups a day."

Ginger tea has been helping me to digest well, which helps reduce the symptoms that lead me to re-engage in bulimic behavior. It's tough to kill the disorder when you feel burning pain all the time. Simmering fresh ginger root and then diluting it in water and drinking it throughout the day has somehow reduced (often completely preventing) the acid that comes up hours after eating. I think it does have something to do with strengthening the esophageal sphincter.
I digest cooked foods better, and I try to cook them in the ginger tea, which also makes food delicious. I cook my vegetable and meat stews in it, as well as grains and legumes.
I also drink slippery elm tea before eating, which together with the ginger tea, makes a great duo. Slippery elm helps protect the GI tract while ginger helps relax it."

I suffered from Acid reflux for nine months, tried almost everything, was on NEXIUM too, I did not have chest pain but throat pain, and ginger tea was the most spectacular discovery! Now I drink several glasses of ginger tea daily and the pain is now much much weaker. Nothing I tried before ever made so much difference.
Therefore, strongly recommend ginger.
I buy a fresh one, peel it off, cut it in small pieces and just spill hot water over it, just like I would do with any other tea.
Anyway, that worked out for me. Pain is not completely gone yet (I drink it for three days only) but life became much more bearable since I started.

12/02/2011: Maureen from Boulder, Colorado replies: "I had a few problems going on when I experienced acid reflux: I had helicobacter pylori (got it from eating a bad hot meatball sandwich). It's a bad bacteria. Can cause serious problems down the line. But it is easy to identify in a blood test. Antibiotics cures it. Once that was gone, I found out I had food sensitivities. It took a while to figure out what those were. Also found my gall bladder was a bit sluggish so I avoid high fat foods and do stomach massage. Now the ginger tea takes care of soothing my once again healthy insides."

Pour in boiling water, let steep for about five minutes, and done! As ginger helps with dizziness (inner ear?) I am doing this to hopefully restore my hearing. Will let you know what happens. Although I have never tasted the real thing it does taste quite nice, only not very fizzy. Maybe I was too afraid the bottle would explode (plastic) and didn't screw the lid on tightly enough. Anyway, are there any benefits in drinking ginger beer? I tried to do a search online but the benefits they talk about are mainly connected to the ginger itself, not the beer. My recipe doesn't use a lot of ginger so I really don't know! And can one keep it?"Replies

Im sure that was the ingredient that switched my eyes back from glasses to perfect vision.. Albeit for ten days last summer when I was drinking a lot of the natural brewed stuff... the downside was the sugar was making me go hperglycemic."

I have just thrown away my first batch as I was not sure that I should have been drinking it. Mine had a good taste (although I have never tasted the real thing but it tasted nice) just not fizzy but I think that it happened because I was so afraid the bottle (plastic) would explode that I didn't screw the lid on. I will make another batch soon now I know that it could have health benefits. I don't drink sugary drinks not only because of health concerns but also because I don't really apreciate sugar but if there are health benefits, especially for the eyes (mine are pretty bad! ), I will give it another try. Do you know how long one can keep it after brewing? Thanks!"

It was reported in the first issue of the magazine called OMNI. A couple of thirty something year old scientists were monitoring themselves after taking various supplements.. Among other things their Cardiovascular state was that of a sixteen year old. When the yeast dies off in a fermentation the dead yeast cells are cracked. This lets you get the dna out, if you eat this "Brewers inch" that collects at the bottom of the fermentation vessel.
I might try and do this again.. Its the only thing left that I havent tried ive repeated all the other stuff I was taking. It was about two small bottles of the naturally fermented stuff a day.. A popular Australian product. But I guess if you just ferment a brown sugar and keep the stuff that collects at the bottom it would do the same thing.. I know that biscuits were made from it once but.. the cooking might stuff up the DNA."

I can operate the computer with my normal glasses where before id have to put the reading ones on.... But It nothing as dramatic as the time when they went from fuzzy to perfect vision whilst watching the TV.. Last year. Ive been on the Vitamins for about four months and the msm for about three. Hope this helps."

Actually I have just posted a question whether when you take Evening Primrose OIl you should also take Vitamin E, in which case I will buy some again! Another question on Ginger Beer! Yesterday I saw a program on TV where they were making it, what a coincidence... But they used brewers yeast, not bakers fresh yeast (together with cream of tartar) as my other recipe. I think that the only brewers yeast we can get here in France is in pill form but that won't do for the beer, I suppose? Any ideas on the kind of yeast one should use and which one did you use?
Honestly, I hate beer and I never thought I would be brewing my own but after seeing this recipe in a Welsh cookery book I got interested in it. How odd..... And the taste was rather nice too, even if it didn't fizz!"
08/08/2011: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "Hi Franceca talk about coincidence.. Whilst at the supermarket yesterday.. I picked up the ingredients for ginger beer.. Prompted by your post! The yeast I got was in a little bottle which said it was ok for brewing beer and making bread.. This type of yeast stops working when the alcohol content is around 7%. Depending of course on how much sugar is in the brew... The yeast for winemaking is different and goes up to 18% before dying off. So Brewers yeast would be ok."
08/09/2011: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Francisca & Gavin, My Grandmother in her later years used to use store bought ginger beer for digestion problems, although it had some additives it was one that was still brewed naturally. She would have a small glass after her main meal most days. She did not have a history of digestion issues but I suspect it came from a small change in her diet due to living with family and having her meals made for her (more processed food than she would have chosen). Anyway the ginger beer worked for her."

We don't have brewers yeast here, as I said, other than in pills so I will try again with the normal bread yeast we find in a cube in our supermarkets. I am mostly sticking to fruit and carrot combos at the moment, as I was advised to juice things I normally eat at first. I have been juicing for two weeks and have had an odd reaction. Every time I add ginger to a fresh juice I get a headache soon after that lasts all day. It is in the frontal lobe are on the left side of my head. This happens every time. peel ginger and put it through the juicer, then add the juice of 1/2 lemon & 3 oranges, and honey. and be aware that this is a concentrated mixture that needs to be deluded with water! adding strawberry-juice along with the water (1:1:1) is delicious.
the amount of ginger depends on how strong you wish your ginger-juice to be."

I recommend the orange if the person can eat citric fruits, otherwise honey will be fine to make the younglings want to take their medicine."

Also, most health food stores and some food stores sell bagged ginger tea to make a cup. You can add sweetener if you please. Also ginger ale, crystallized ginger and sometimes even ginger cookies.
I get nauseous a lot, and I swear by crystallized ginger after eating, especially if I feel bloated or ate too much. In Ayurvedic medicine, 500 year old East Indian medicine, they believe that ginger fires up the internal digestive fire.
Ginger is very good for cancer patients and AIDs patients, cause they get nausea a lot. I've suggested it to many friend and they say it worked for them
Other cures I've used for nausea (they do not have to be used together) are:
a warm hot water bottle, wrapped on my abdomen.

I would like mto mshare a short story with you, in 1982 my mother gave birth to my half sister, we were in the farm and very, very poor, we couldn't affort doctor for my mother internal bleeding after birth. An elder in the village told me to get yellow ginger root juice for my mother to drink. Every day I would gave my mom about two table spoons juice there time a day. sure enough, her bleeding have slow down and after thre or four dau or so she felt much better. this was 26 some years ago but i still remeber. I boil ginger root in water and once boiled, I steep tea in it. I had honey and lemon to the ginger tea. Drinking four cups a day for two days will cure any cough or cold you have. It always works. A table spoon of shreaded ginger root in two cups of water (you can make it stronger/spicer by adding more ginger), two tea bags, 1/2 lime or lemon and a couple of table spoons of honey (I like my tea a little sweet). Drink two cups in the morning and two right before bed.
