"Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD, TMJ or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends the boundaries between several health-care disciplines -- in particular, dentistry, neurology, physical therapy, and psychology -- there are a variety of quite different treatment approaches." [YEA]  05/04/2009: Bev from Long Beach, CA/USA: "Several years ago the right side of my jaw would swell and my jaw would lock. This condition would be aggravated by my salivary gland when I "thought" of eating a cookie. Strange indeed. I went to the dentist and he sent me to an Orthodontist that pryed my mouth open. That helped at the time but it wasn't until a co-worker suggested I see a Chiropractor that I was cured. I couldn't open my mouth but he managed to put a finger inside my mouth on the "left" side and applied pressure to a muscle. That afternoon the swelling was gone. I have used this technique myself over the years to cure myself and it's always worked."

I had a dentist trained in accupressure press on stomach on my left side just below my ribs, haven't experienced TMJ symptoms since then. This was a few years ago. I would definitely recommend acupressure."

SIDE EFFECT

[YEA]  12/23/2009: Khloe R. from Fresno, Ca: "I had suffered from TMJ twice in my life and both times they were cured by magnesium. The magnesium in your body is usually depleted by stress. Magnesium is also what makes you calm, and can even help your bowel movements if constipated. I still take a magnesium supplement daily and have no problems ever since."

[SIDE EFFECTS]  12/28/2009: Tmj from Stamford, Ct replies: "Hi, Which form of Magnesium are you taking? I have taken Magnesium Citrate (for my TMJ pain) yesterday, but had a very upset stomach as a side effect. Is this normal?. Did you have any such side effects? Thanks."
12/28/2009: SusanBo from Monterey, Ca replies: "hi TMJ, try rubbing magnesium oil instead by rubbing it on your jaw near ears and on your neck. It will sting, but won't ever give you the runs. I have used it for TMJ with phenomenal results. I apply it 20 minutes before getting in the shower and then rinse it off in the shower. You could also rinse it off in the sink. It comes off very easily."
01/02/2010: Tmj from Stamford, Ct replies: "Hi. Thanks for the advise on Magnesium oil. I searched the web for Magnesium oil and found many results. Can you suggest which is the one that best worked for you. Thanks & Happy New Year!"

EC: Make it yourself for pennies from magnesium chloride bought at an aquarium supply store! Just add hot water to dissolve the magnesium flakes 50/50.

03/18/2012: E from Islamabad, Pakistan replies: "to the people who've been taking magnesium supplements, how much did you take and in what form?"
04/08/2012: Bonecrusher from Usa replies: "The two best forms of magnesium to take orally without giving you any intestinal side effects are magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate.

Look at the amount of elemental magnesium (not the total mg of the formula) in the brand you buy, 200mg is a good starting point. You can work your way up to 2 or 3x that or more depending on how your body feels.

Take it first thing in the morning when you get up, if you take it later in the day you will have a hard time waking up the next day it will make you sleep so hard."

QUESTION

09/16/2011: Jayeshgala83 from Mumbai, Maharashtra, India: "Since last 2-3 weeks, I am feeling like I am pressing my teeth in the night.. I feel my tissues around jaws are always in tension... When I wake up.. I feel pressure on my teeth... is there any cure on this using oil pulling? Thanks"

Replies
09/16/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Jayeshgala83, a magnesium deficiency can cause you to grind your teeth at night. You could either make some magnesium oil (1 cup magnesium chloride flakes and 1 cup of boiling pure water and dissolve the flakes). Put the liquid into a spray bottle and spray on yourself or put the flakes and water into a small foot bath and soak your feet in it for about 20-30 minutes or into a full bath. Swimming in the sea is also good to get magnesium into your body."
09/19/2011: Jayeshgala83 from Maharashtra, India replies: "Hi Debbie, Thanks for your reply. Where do I need to spray this liquid? can I drink that? Any places to buy magnesium chloride flakes? If I it take magnesium Supplement, will that help?

Thanks and regards, Jayesh"

09/19/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Jayeshgala83, you can spray it anywhere (your leg, your body). Some people wash it off after a while, some people leave it on. Magnesium supplements don't work as well apparently. It takes a long time for it to have effect. Some people even spray it into their mouths.

If you google your city you will find it is produced there, so if you contact those companies I am sure they could direct you where to buy it.

[QUESTION]  12/24/2009: Tmj from Stamford, Ct: "TMJ treatment

I have been suffering from TMJ disorder for the past 9 months. I get pain in my temples, jaw joint, Cheeks, neck, back, and sometime my tongue. I get ringing sounds in my ears too. I have read about oil pulling in your website posts and am eager to know more about it. Is there any more specific information such as the type of oil to be used, any specific schedule to be followed. Apart from oil pulling, are there any other ways to attack the problem.

Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!"

Nine months is a long time to hve TMJ problems. Question: Are you on Fosamax or one of the other drugs for osteoporosis (bone thinning)? They are known to cause osteonecrosis (death) of the lower jaw. If you are on one of these, type the name of the medication you are taking in the search window and look up side effects."
12/26/2009: Tmj from Stamford, Ct replies: "Hi. I have not used any of those medications that you have mentioned. I have been using some muscle relaxants (prescribed by my doc). I feel ok when the muscle relaxants are working, but after a day or two I start to feel my jaw muscles getting sore & tight. Any insights on natural TMJ treatment would be appreciated."
12/30/2009: Lindaa from Chipley, Florida, U.S.A. replies: "On and Off for years I had TMJ. My dentist even pulled a tooth. I read some odd thing about TMJ and grinding my teeth. I was sure I did not, but asked my husband. He said I always did.

I bought a cheap football mouth piece, cut off the piece that sticks out, followed directions on box. Put it in my mouth that night. The next morning I discovered I had crewed almost completly through one side. anyway....One day I had the TMJ that was really hurting so bad I wanted to cry. Not really thinking, I was rubbing both sides of my jaws, when I noticed I had a lump (muscle cramp) on the side that hurt, but not the other side. I dug my fingers into the lump and massaged it really hard. It did not hurt to do this for some reason. After a couple of minutes I noticed the TMJ pain was gone. There after, any time I felt the TMJ pain coming on I would massage that muscle, as well as wear another mouth piece at night for a few days. I belive TMJ is stress related, and not misaligned teeth. Give it a try, it cant hurt worse than what you already have, and it only costs a couple of dollars for a cheap mouth piece."

QUESTION

11/29/2008: Diane Corcoran from Magnolia Springs, Alabama: "In the 80's I developed and lived with TMJ(severe joint pain in the jaw) until my mouth locked shut. In other words the joint was so inflamed that it would not move in the joint and I was fortunate it locked in shut position and not open position. Under a Doctor's care and dentist it eventually opened and I wore a bite sprint that was specially fitted for under the roof of my upper jaw and lost down to 95 lbs.The reason (by the doctor) was extreme tension and stress and I would clinch my jaw at night but no grinding. Now with the economy and with our company and being in the building trade stress and tension has developed again and there is a great deal of pain. I have been drinking chamomile which has relieved the stress especially at night but the pain is still there and headaches on that side of my jaw developes as the day goes on. I started back on Organic Vinegar today, is there anything else that can relieve the pain without going through the doctor process again? I know it can't be healed but just to relieve the pain. Maybe Ted has an answer?"

Replies
12/02/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "This TMJ is a condition from long term bruxism (grinding of teeth during sleep), which was cured, a couple of years ago, involving a child with learning disorders with bruxism and a restless leg syndrome.

I also know of another friend of mind that had bruxism, having a similar cause and has since died of SLE. Heavy metal poisoning is one of the requirements to get SLE (lupus). Under both conditions, it is due to heavy metal poisoning, or high heavy metals, that initiate a very low level epileptic seizure, that some people would call bruxism. My approach is that both conditions are the same, but it exists along a continuum of the same cause, but because of our vocabulary and usages we get confused that both is similarly caused. It happens so when their is electrical shortages (such as high metals in the brain) that occured during sleep, leading to a mild semi epileptic conditions. An epileptic seizures full blown you just bite the teeth until the tongue is bitten off and you bleed from the mouth from large part of the tongues bitten off. This I have observed first hand and so it is quite bloody. A milder form you can hear a loud squeaking of teeth, which we referred to as bruxism.

The cause is heavy metal poisoning, along with excessive calcium that leads to excessive muscle contraction, leading to bruxism that occurs during the night. In more severe cases bruxism led to epileptic seizures. Another form of similar cause is the restless leg syndrome that effects different part of the body. Both conditions where muscles contract involuntarily is often magnesium deficiency and excessive calcium. Magnesium helps muscle relaxes, while calcium causes muscles to contract. Interestingly a contracting muscles from excess calcium and lack of magnesium can cause all kinds of problem such as inability to move voluntary muscles. One bus driver had that condition, so you can imagine what happens if he can't turn his steering wheel or brake the bus! It could cause the muscle to contract along the spinal column so badly that it twisted the back. In this condition the jaws leads to a condition of TMJ (a mouthful of words - Temporomandibular joint disorder!)

Therefore, since the child was cured, the remedy used was cilantro, which chelates heavy metal. What is so strange is that these kinds of people have very limited ability to tolerate cilantro chelation, and hence, a very high heavy metal toxicity. Lab tests won't generally pick up this form since it is a free heavy metal, rather then a protein bound form, which is less toxic. Therefore the dose of cilantro is much lower, and is used once every three or four days, such as 3-10 leaves of cilantro, at least in the beginning as metals get slowly removed from the system.

However the priority of this condition is to first take the mangesium supplements first, without any calcium added or the calcium would defeat the cure that is needed. The preferred supplements I used is either a magnesium chloride, 250 - 500 mg, once a day, or a magnesium citrate supplements, preferably powdered, but if it is in tablets, its' chewed, grinded, to increae bioavailability, followed by drinking with plenty of water. This is taken for at least about one or two weeks before commencing the chelation of heavy metals issue.

During that stage, the body also need to be alkalized, or a least to cause the brain to be more alkaline, especially. But getting the btain alkaline isn't easy. It is a high metabolism organ so taking straight baking soda isn't going to work. Most are generally used up before reaching the brain and breaks down into CO2 and H2O in the final stages that adds more CO2 pressure in less accessible area. Therefore, the remedy I do used is what the scientist called the carbicarb. However, I have modified this carbicarb to reduce some side effects from the lack of potassium that is not used in the remedy.

Therefore the carbicarb is as follows: 1/4 teaspoon of sodium carbonate (common name is washing soda) 1/4 teaspoon, plus sodium bicarbonate 1/4 teaspoon, plus potassium citrate (or potassium bicarbonate) 1/4 teaspoon, in a glass of water taken twice a day. Once the bruxism lessens, then the remedy can be knocked down to a simpler form, such as 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate in a half glass or preferably a full glass of water. This is often taken 5 days out of a week or at least 4 days out f a week. Since food is most likely to be acid forming, currently 90% of all the food we eat are acid forming anyway, the baking soda is quite often needed.

It should be noted that magnesium reduces the heavy metal toxicity to help the brain detox better. The alkalization of the brain causes the brain to be more relax so that bruxism will be reduce somewhat.

The real remedy comes after magnesium and alkalization for at least 2-3 weeks do I concentrate on chelation, which can be cilantro, chlorella, or even perhaps a very low dose disodium EDTA. In any event it's taken at once every three days. I don't like agressive chelation since when this happens, there is way too much chelate metals circulating metals n the blood and we become overwhelmed and it becomes toxic itself, since our kidneys and intestines have a limited capacity for ridding of it too, so we give it plenty of rest period, or void period.

Lecithin I believe is essential and can begin immediately as is alkalization and magnesium. It allows the brain to develop myelin insulation, to protect against shortages in the brain that leads to bruxism or milder forms of seizures. The dose I prefer to use in at least one tablespoons per day before meals. In more severe cases I may require one tablespoons of granulated lecithin half an hour or one hour before every meals. It should be noted that metals inside our body is hydrophobic in nature, which means they are oil soluble. Since granulated lecithin works as a fat emulsifier, heavy metals will be more soluble and are removed faster through the stool instead of accumulating in the liver and the blood.

Getting a hair mineral analysis helps reveal other things. For example, if it reveals the hair has high mercury, then we supplement with more selenium supplements, usually 200 mcg, a day to displace the mercury. The common dose of selenium is between 200 mcg to 1000 mcg a day. I always start on the low dose side is best so it won't exceed the limited capacity of removeing heavy metals. The common deficiencies I do encounter are iodine, molybdenum, magnesium, and selenium and most of it can be obtained through supplements, where iodine main source is often kelp supplements.

Another way the helps using the alkaline remedy in case, is the lemon and baking soda that I used. It's 2 tablespoons of lemon plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day.

Once the body starts to recover, I often reduce the supplements and then take them on an as needed basis. It is only the alkalization remedy that is required in constant use since our food supply are acid forming. There was one case of a child with epileptic seizures every month, upon alkalization, the child no long had any epileptic seizures and no medication was needed. In another bruxism that leads to TMJ was eliminated too. Certain other supplements that support brain function that is needed at least once or twice a week is the fish oil with omega 3, that has both EPA and DHA, on their labels. The other essential oils might be evening primrose oil, and for that it's once a week. Cod liver oil might help some of this reduction too.

Ted"

[YEA]  08/21/2010: Jasonmchicago from Chicago, Il replies: "I recently was diagnosed with TMJ which is different from bruxism. I believe the main cause of TMJ is clenching. Bruxism leads to pain in the joint and some of the muscles... But doesn't cause an inbalance to the mouth structure that limits eat, drinking, sleeping, etc. We should seperate Bruxism from Clenching from TMJ. Bruxism is its own category. Clenching leads to TMJ. Here are some of the common symptoms of TMJD

Eye Pain and Eye Problems:
Bloodshot eyes
Blurring of vision
Eye pain above, below and behind eye
Pressure behind eyes
Light sensitivity
Watering of the eyes

Head Pain, Headache Problems, Facial Pain:
Migraines
Forehead pain
Cluster headaches
"Sinus Type" headache
Hair and/or scalp painful or sensitive to touch
Headaches at the back of the head, with or without shooting pain

Teeth and Gum Problems:
Clenching during the day or at night
Tooth pain
Sensitive teeth
Mouth, Face, Cheek, and Chin Problems:

Discomfort or pain to any of these areas
Pain in cheek muscles
Uncontrollable tongue movements
Jaw and Jaw Joint Problems
Limited opening
Inability to open the jaw smoothly or evenly
Jaw deviates to one side when opening
Inability to find the correct bite with teeth
Clicking or popping jaw joints
Uncontrollable jaw movements

Ear Pain, Ear Problems:
Hissing, buzzing, ringing, or roaring sounds
Diminished hearing
Clogged, "stuffy", itchy ears
Feeling of fullness
Ear pain without infection
Balance problems, vertigo, dizziness

Throat Problems:
Swallowing difficulties
Tightness of throat
Sore throat with no infection
Voice fluctuations
Laryngitis
Tongue Pain

Neck and Shoulder Problems:
Neck pain
Tired, sore neck problems
Shoulder aches
Back pain (upper and lower)
Arm and finger tingling, numbness, and/or pain
Stiffness

These symptoms are a lot different from muscle pain from bruxing during the night. The thing that has worked best for me has been a "Tanner bite splint. " This is dentist made splint that is balanced... Meaning that it tries to correct the abnormalities in one's teeth. By doing this it limits the sleep clenching. One can look up "the clenching syndrome" online to get a better explaination. It has been the one thing that has worked wonders for me. Thanks, JasonMChicago"
08/21/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "It's possible depending on the person, that TMJ and bruxism (grinding teeth while clenching them, in or out of sleep) can be caused by the same thing, a parasite. Of the two, bruxism is the more recognized symptom of a parasite.

BTW, I've found that most books have a very poor incomplete Index. Many times entire words are present multiple times in the text but missing from the index! Best way around this is to Search the document (but on Scribd. Com, this can't be done if only in Read Mode. You'd have to download the text and then Search. )

Any PDF document has a searchbox, and any browser has Edit--Find or some such which brings up a Search box. But the Search can look only for text in the main window, and not in a secondary sliding window or frame like a scribd document."

In addition, simce I can't afford acupuncture, I massaged the areas an acupuncturist, in another youtube video, targeted to treat TMJ. The pain was so bad I thought I had infected teeth; wasting money and time on two emergency dental visits even though the dentist couldn't find anything wrong with my teeth. He finally suggested the pain might be from TMJ since I had some symptoms. I felt the heating pad and the kinetic exercises were the main focus of my home remedy and gave me a faster than expected reduction in pain, continued practice over a week or so stopped the pain altogether. I did the exercises whenever I thought about it, even while driving and doing other tasks, such as washing dishes. Most of the exercises are hands free.

[YEA]  08/18/2010: Antares from Tamuning, Guam: "My jaw seized up rather suddenly and was getting worse by the day. The tension in the jaw joint was becoming severe -- uncomfortable and painful, and I could not open my mouth without a miserable jarring pop. Because my godmother has been through a years-long full mouth reconstruction, I asked her what I could do. She told me that a tibetan singing bowl helped her a lot. I didn't have access to one, but a couple days later it occured to me to just hum. So I did, for about ten minutes on my drive home, and then I went to bed. The next morning my jaw was most of the way better -- I barely noticed the pop of the dislocation, once I had warmed up the joint. While humming that first time, while the tension was severe, my eardrum buzzed/rattled like a broken speaker! The next day there was no more buzzing when I hummed. I still need to accomplish a complete cure, as I my jaw is still dislocated since the onset of this bout of tension; however, that will probably require a wisdom tooth extraction. Now it clunks when I open my mouth, but does not cause me any discomfort."

[YEA]  11/30/2008: June from NYC, USA: "When I was in college years ago, I took a class on the Linklater Voice method, which was recommended for actors and public speakers. I remember being told that one of the exercises we used to warm up at the beginning of class was excellent at reducing or eliminating TMJ. This particular warm-up exercise consisted of grabbing a good hold on your chin between your thumb and pointing finger and vibrating it (shaking it very quickly with tiny movements) while making an "AHHHHH" sound. Then you'd continue with the vibration and make a very deep sighing noise going up and down the scale (picture a sound wave curve). You might want to do this in a sound proof room because people may wonder what the heck you are up to -- very silly sounds!

I have used the technique successfully over the years to treat my TMJ when it popped up. I spend 5-10 minuts making sounds and vibrating my jaw. I also move my jaw from side to side while making that AHhhh sound.

Magnesium is a potent stress reducer, so you might consider taking that too.

P.S. I haven't checked, but maybe there are some videos on YouTube on the Linklater voice method to give you an idea.
P.P.S Babies sometimes make a very similar sound to the vibration I described above!"

[YEA]  04/14/2009: Robin from Near Toledo, Ohio: "A yoga practice cured me of TMJ disorder. I used to get shooting pains up my cheek and really bad headaches. I started with Zanax but since I knew that was a highly addictive drug, I researched natural alternatives and discovered Kava Kava. It worked just as well without the worry of addiction. I was also fitted with a mouth piece to prevent me from clenching hard at night.

I then start yoga practice and I think releasing the stored tension in my body was key. (the fish, the cobra, the scorpion, the bow, the wheel, and the camel were beneficial, stretching the entire front of the body, plus I would jut out my chin in doing some of these to increase the stretch in the neck/jaw area. Mind you, to be healthy, you need to do opposite stretches to keep the body in balance, like the standing forward bend, the shoulder stand, the child's pose, seated forward bend, etc.) After practicing for a few months, I noticed that I no longer clenched at night or during the day and the headaches were gone. Of course, stress was a trigger too, I was married to an emotional abuser and control freak plus suffered from chronic sinusitis every other week for years.

It's interesting that Ted talks of an alkaline ph in reference to chelating heavy metals linked to TMJ. I also have adrenal fatigue and thyroid resistance, both of which call for minerals (magnesium, etc.) to heal from. Additionally, I have a mouth full of metal fillings and have suspected mercury toxicity as a contributor to the CFIDS, Fibromyalgia, etc that I am challenged with as well. I would have the taste of a metal spoon in my mouth constantly when I had the TMJ really bad.

Blessings,
Robin "
